Aber was solls!
In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD (2016), which we watched on Netflix. From a manga by Fumiyo Kono with screenplay credits to Sunao Katabuchi and Chie Uratani, and directed by Sunao Katabuchi; the film follows the life of Suzu, a young girl from Hiroshima in the 1900s who is growing up right before WW2. The film follows her from a young girl and as a young woman, who in adherence to local and cultural customs, is promised in marriage to a young man whom she met briefly but barely remembered. From here, the film follows her ordinary life that gets swept up in the rising crescendo of the great war. She faces good and bad times with grace and at the end of the story is older, wiser and the film has woven a bittersweet tapestry of this woman, her family and their lives in this moment in history. The film has a run time of 2 h 9 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode goes out to one of my oldest and dearest friends, Suze, on a very important birthday. I am so grateful for you and thank you for being a part of my journey - love you madly Sibling!
On this episode of Bakacast, we gush about the delightfully goofy (and surprisingly sincere) Planet With. In order to balance out the fun, though, we also dissect “In This Corner of the World”, a movie by Sunao Katabuchi that focuses on World War II’s effects on the daily lives of a family in Hiroshima.
