"Mastering the Art of Coaching: On Readiness, Supervision, and Growth." In this episode of the Arete Coach Podcast, host Severin Sorensen welcomes Clare Norman, a Master Certified Coach (MCC), author, and master mentor coach based in Brockenhurst, England. With over 25 years of experience in leadership and coaching, Clare specializes in executive coaching, leadership transitions, team coaching, and fostering coaching cultures within organizations. She is also the founder of Clare Norman Coaching Associates and the author of several books, including The Transformational Coach, Mentor Coaching: A Practical Guide, and her latest release, Cultivating Coachability. In this conversation, Clare shares her insights on coaching readiness, supervision, and the journey toward masterful coaching. Clare's path into coaching began during her tenure at Accenture, where she recognized the gap between leadership training and the practical application of learned concepts in the workplace. Witnessing the struggle leaders faced in implementing training-driven changes, she discovered coaching as a powerful tool for sustained behavioral transformation. Her research-based approach led her to champion coaching as an organizational development tool, earning her the self-appointed title of “advocate for coaching” within Accenture. Clare's journey toward mastery was gradual, transitioning from an ACC to PCC and ultimately to an MCC credential with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). She emphasizes the importance of supervision in this journey, highlighting how mentor coaching and supervision allowed her to unlearn ineffective habits, refine her skills, and deepen her presence as a coach. Key Insights & Takeaways 1. The Role of Supervision in Coaching Mastery Coaching supervision is essential for ethical, professional, and personal growth. It provides a reflective space to analyze coaching effectiveness, ethical dilemmas, and personal biases.Supervision helps coaches avoid common pitfalls and ensures they remain client-centered. 2. Coaching Readiness vs. Coachability Clare differentiates between “coaching readiness” and “coachability.”Not everyone is immediately ready for coaching; readiness depends on motivation, timing, and willingness to engage in deep thinking.Organizations should assess coaching readiness before assigning a coach to an executive. 3. The Journey from PCC to MCC Mastery requires significant unlearning, particularly around directive coaching tendencies.Key shifts include summarizing less, using the client's own words to formulate powerful questions, and focusing on depth over breadth.Effective coaching is about presence, patience, and helping clients slow down to gain clarity. 4. The Importance of Full-Body Wisdom in Coaching Coaching is not just about cognitive processing but also involves emotional and somatic awareness.Encouraging clients to stand, move, or explore metaphors can unlock deeper insights.Full-body wisdom integrates intuition, gut feelings, and physical awareness into coaching conversations. 5. The Intersection of AI and Coaching Clare acknowledges the rise of AI-driven coaching but emphasizes that human connection remains irreplaceable.AI can serve as a useful in-between tool for coaching clients but should not replace human coaches.Ethical concerns and ensuring AI remains non-directive are critical. Memorable Quotes “Hours of coaching do not a master make.” “Our job as coaches is to build the client's thinking muscles, not do the thinking for them.” “Supervision isn't about fixing; it's about refining and deepening our coaching presence.” The Arete Coach Podcast explores the art and science of executive coaching. He advises coaches to resist the urge to fill silence and instead allow clients space to process. This approach leads to more profound client insights and transformation. Emotional Literacy vs. Emotional Intelligence While Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is widely recognized, Dr. Williams advocates for Emotional Literacy, which emphasizes not just understanding emotions but also expressing them in a meaningful way. His Emotional Literacy Academy provides tools for self-awareness, authenticity, and deeper communication. The Role of Metaphors in Coaching Metaphors help clients describe challenges and uncover solutions in ways that resonate deeply. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode, titled, "The Business Leader's Guide to AI: Framework-Driven Strategy for the Digital Age," recorded on January 26, 2025, Sorensen shares insights from his groundbreaking presentation at Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education programme where he discussed his innovative approach to integrating AI with traditional business frameworks. As the author of "The AI Whisperer Frameworks" and several other best selling books on AI implementation for business, Sorensen has developed a unique methodology that bridges the gap between established business strategy and emerging AI capabilities, making complex AI applications accessible to non-technical business leaders. In this compelling episode, Sorensen reveals how his layered prompt journey approach transforms traditional business analysis through AI integration. Using a real-world example of Frank Pepe's Pizzeria, he demonstrates how combining multiple frameworks - from company wikis to Blue Ocean Strategy - creates a comprehensive business analysis system. His layered prompt journey with strategic business frameworks, along with his successful books and AI-generated music ventures, showcases the versatility of his framework-based approach. What sets Sorensen's methodology apart is not just the use of AI or traditional business frameworks, but the innovative way he structures these elements into an educational journey that business leaders can follow to enhance their strategic thinking. Strategic Framework Integration: The episode illuminates how coaches can help clients move beyond basic AI implementation to strategic integration. Sorensen's layered approach demonstrates that effective AI usage isn't just about good prompts - it's about building a comprehensive strategic thinking process that combines traditional business frameworks with AI capabilities. This provides coaches with a structured method for helping clients develop more sophisticated AI strategies. Educational Leadership Development: Sorensen's framework-based methodology offers coaches a new paradigm for developing leaders in the AI era. By breaking down complex AI implementations into structured, framework-based approaches, coaches can help their clients build confidence in using AI while maintaining focus on strategic business objectives. This educational component is crucial for helping leaders bridge the gap between traditional business strategy and AI implementation. Process Innovation and Change Management: The discussion of agentic AI and the insurance industry example highlights how coaches can guide clients through transformational change. By showing how AI can reduce a two-week process to three hours while improving accuracy, coaches can help clients understand both the potential and limitations of AI implementation. This balanced approach helps leaders maintain perspective on AI as a tool for enhancement rather than replacement of human judgment. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen with an episode with Dr. Nicky Terblanche's titled, "From Code to Coaching: Vision for AI-Assisted Development." In this episode, recorded via Zoom on November 27th, 2024, we are joined by Dr. Nicky Terblanche, an associate professor of leadership coaching and information systems at Stellenbosch Business School, executive coach, and founder of Coach Vici. Dr. Terblanche brings a unique blend of technological expertise and human development insight, making him a leading researcher in the field of human-machine collaborative coaching and the application of artificial intelligence in personal growth and professional development. Dr. Terblanche's journey begins with an early fascination with computer programming at age 10, riding horseback to access his town's only PC to code in BASIC. His path led from software engineering through artificial intelligence research in 1999 to a profound interest in human psychology and coaching. This unusual combination of technical expertise and human development has positioned him as a pioneer in AI-enhanced coaching research. His groundbreaking studies, including collaboration with renowned researchers like Eric deHaan, have challenged conventional wisdom about AI's role in coaching. Through his company Coach Vici and his academic work, Dr. Terblanche continues to push the boundaries of how artificial intelligence can democratize and enhance coaching practices while maintaining rigorous scientific standards. The conversation reveals several crucial insights for executive coaches navigating the AI revolution. First, the research indicates that AI-powered coaching can be remarkably effective, particularly in structured situations like goal-setting and initial interactions. This suggests that coaches should consider incorporating AI tools as complementary resources rather than viewing them as threats to their practice. Perhaps most surprisingly, the research showed that cognitive behavioral coaching approaches through AI outperformed both GROW model and solution-focused methods, challenging conventional wisdom in the coaching field. This finding emphasizes the importance of evidence-based practices and suggests that coaches should remain open to adjusting their methodologies based on empirical research rather than tradition or preference. The future of executive coaching appears to be moving toward a hybrid model where human coaches serve as expert prompt engineers and meaning-makers, while AI handles data processing and pattern recognition. Dr. Terblanche's concept of "coach shapeshifting" - where AI adapts its approach based on client needs - suggests that successful coaches will need to develop similar adaptability in their practice, combining technical knowledge with deep human understanding to provide truly transformative coaching experiences. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. With an episode titled "Will Over Skill: Building High-Performance Teams Through Purpose-Driven Leadership." In this episode, recorded via Zoom on November 13, 2024, we are joined by Pete Sciabarra, an executive coach, Vistage Chair, and former Vistage corporate executive. Pete brings a unique blend of military, corporate, and coaching experience to the conversation. As a former U.S. Navy captain and helicopter pilot, he transitioned into executive leadership, ultimately holding senior roles at Vistage, where he oversaw a $25 million segment of the business that achieved the company's number one ranking. Pete Sciabarra's journey is marked by dedication to service and leadership excellence. From his early days at the Naval Academy to his role as a helicopter pilot during Desert Storm, Pete's military career shaped his leadership philosophy. His path took an unexpected turn when his son was diagnosed with autism, leading him to pursue a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego, focusing his research on adults with autism. This personal challenge transformed his understanding of human potential and care. As a Vistage Chair in San Diego, Pete facilitates executive peer groups that help CEOs and business owners break through barriers, fostering collaboration and personal accountability. His expertise in crisis leadership proved invaluable during emergency relief efforts for businesses affected by major hurricanes. Beyond his professional life, Pete's commitment to service extends to coaching high school varsity inline hockey, bringing the same focus on teamwork and resilience from the boardroom to the rink. Pete's experience with Vistage demonstrates the transformative power of peer advisory groups. He emphasizes that successful peer groups aren't just about business advice—they're about creating a safe space where leaders can share challenges they might not discuss elsewhere. The key to successful peer groups lies in selecting members who are lifelong learners and who understand they don't have all the answers, creating an environment where vulnerability and growth can flourish. The Evolution of Leadership in the AI Era as artificial intelligence reshapes business landscapes, We explore frameworks and AI like Wiki, SWOT, Porters Five Forces, and Blue Ocean Strategy. Pete highlights that while AI tools can enhance decision-making and analysis, they won't replace the need for authentic leadership and human connection. He emphasizes that successful leaders must adapt to new technologies while maintaining focus on people-centric leadership, caring deeply about their team members' needs and development. The Importance of Continuous Learning and Adaptation Throughout the episode, Pete's journey from military service to executive coaching underscores the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. His experience shows that effective leaders must remain curious, humble, and open to new perspectives. Whether it's embracing new technologies like AI or understanding different leadership challenges, success comes from maintaining a learning mindset and being willing to question established assumptions while staying true to core values of integrity and service. Happy New Year! Here it is the start of Season 9 for my podcast, so first of all, thank you for being a part of my journey that has intersected with your journey. In my regular daily reading from the book “Arete” by Brian Johnson on page 339, he shares some very powerful (and for me emotional) information on our journey through life being a process and it's not really a destination. It's a great reminder to be thankful and appreciating the good in our lives and not taking those things for granted. (which sadly, I do plenty of times). I wanted to share this with you to start our 2025 out in a great direction (or whenever you listen to this episode), so I hope you can take something from this episode and plant it in good soil to grow all throughout this year and beyond! Thanks for listening. Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen, with an episode that explores "Movement as Medicine: Exploring Movement and Meaning With Athletic Psychology." In this episode, recorded via Zoom on October 1st, 2024, we are joined by Sam Spear, founder and CEO of Coaching Instinct. Sam brings a unique blend of expertise as an executive leadership coach, licensed marriage and family therapist, former advertising and marketing executive, and lifelong competitive athlete. With an impressive client roster including Disney, Netflix, Target, EA, and SpaceX, Sam combines psychological insights with physical activity to unlock deeper organizational insights and model effective leadership. Sam Spear's journey reflects a fascinating evolution from competitive tennis player to journalism graduate, then to psychotherapist and successful advertising executive. His path led him through roles as a copywriter, creative director, and eventually global creative director before founding and later selling his own agency. Throughout his 20-year business career, Sam maintained a small clinical practice, which unexpectedly merged with his business experience when a Fortune 100 CEO client suggested he consider executive team coaching. This pivotal moment led to the creation of Coaching Instinct, where Sam developed his distinctive approach combining athletic activities with psychological insights to help leaders break through mental obstacles and resistance. His methodology, grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and solution-focused psychotherapy, helps clients achieve greater efficiency, connection, and impact while fostering environments of authenticity and growth. Sam Spear's approach to executive coaching demonstrates the power of combining physical movement with psychological insight. His methodology shows that engaging clients in athletic activities can create breakthrough moments that translate directly to leadership capabilities. By observing how clients respond to physical challenges, coaches can identify patterns that manifest in their professional lives and help address them more effectively. The episode highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced approach between future-focused coaching (85-90% of the work) and past-oriented counseling (10-15% of the work). This distinction allows coaches to help clients move forward while occasionally addressing historical patterns that may be hindering their progress. Spear's framework of "wins, losses, and notables" provides a structured way to track progress and leverage successes while learning from setbacks. Perhaps most significantly, Spear emphasizes the value of slowing down and maintaining perspective in leadership development. His mantra of "STFD" (Slow The F*** Down) encapsulates the importance of being present and making thoughtful decisions rather than rushing through challenges. This approach, combined with his focus on building trust through consistent actions over time, offers a powerful framework for sustainable leadership development and organizational growth. The Arete Coach Podcast seeks to explore the art and science of executive coaching. You can find out more about this podcast at aretecoach.io. This episode was recorded on October 1, 2024. Paul expands on how to make your own proprietary blend for fitness by introducing the concept of Arete, the ancient Greek ideal of pursuing excellence in all aspects of life. He explores how aligning your actions with your values transforms fitness goals from arbitrary pursuits into meaningful commitments that get you lifelong results. Paul also challenges you to replace limiting beliefs about fitness with an understanding that striving for physical excellence is a duty, not a luxury. If you don't feel like you're living in alignment with your values, stick around to the end of the show for the first steps you need to take to get back on track.
Jenna Rooney, Director of Client Services for Arete sits down with Kaylee & Mary to talk about her journey to eDiscovery, winning not one, but two, Innovation Awards at this year's Relativity Fest, and the similarities and differences between eDiscovery and Incident Response. You know Jenna Rooney also offered a great fun fact about herself, one that, in her signature fashion, resulted in yet another technical certification!
Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen with an episode titled, "The Art of Breakthrough Leadership." In this episode, recorded via phone, we are joined by Brian Biro, widely known as America's Breakthrough Speaker. With nearly 2,000 presentations delivered globally, Brian has inspired audiences from Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft, Starbucks, and Lockheed Martin to leadership teams in the U.S. Army. A graduate of Stanford and UCLA, Brian's remarkable career spans roles as an award-winning swimming coach, former VP of a major transportation company, and transformational speaker. He is the author of 16 books, including the bestseller "Beyond Success," and was honored as one of UCLA's 100 Most Inspirational Graduates. In this engaging conversation, Brian shares his journey from coaching swimming at the highest levels to becoming America's Breakthrough Speaker. His career transformation began when he pursued an MBA to "get a life" – a decision that led him to meet his wife and eventually transition into corporate leadership. As a vice president of a transportation company, Brian discovered his talent for breaking down silos and building teams through inspirational speaking. This experience launched his speaking career, where he has touched over a million lives in 35 years through his unique approach to breakthrough experiences, including his signature board-breaking exercises that serve as powerful metaphors for personal transformation. Brian's philosophy centers on three key areas: vision (focusing on what we want to create), energy (understanding that our energy is a choice), and relationship building (fostering trust through full presence and authentic connection). His commitment to helping others break through barriers and achieve their highest potential perfectly aligns with the Arete Coach Podcast's mission of exploring excellence in leadership and coaching. Brian's comments on The Power of Presence in Coaching were an important component of this conversation. Brian emphasizes that the foundation of effective coaching lies in being fully present. He argues that presence is not just about physical attendance but about bringing 100% of your mind, body, and spirit to each interaction. This level of presence communicates value and significance to clients, building the trust necessary for transformational coaching relationships. Woke up early this morning as I not only was looking forward to a good cup of coffee to start my day off with, but I was also feeling a little bit worried about things, feeling anxious too. I'm trying to take those things on with more meditation / prayer, along with “doing something” instead of worrying & feeling anxiety. So, I was compelled to get up and do some reading and reflecting. Early mornings are always a joy to me to start my day off in a great direction. Picked up my copy of “Arete” - where this book, written by Brian Johnson, helps me to find and activate my heroic potential. Also, a big shout out to Chris Tessmar who recently sent me a note, thanking me for recommending this book on my show. Sounds like he picked up a copy and he is making some great connections with the lessons found in it. This section today from pages 293 & 294, is all about the comparison between Mediocrity vs. Excellence. A big thing that I found out were all the synonyms for Mediocrity. There are many such as unremarkable, lackluster, unexciting, just to name a few. But Brian noted that from the Thesaurus he was using there was only ONE antonym for it. That word was Excellent! It's a great reminder that by just simply trying to do our best, putting in a little bit of effort, we can be a bit above mediocrity. Doing this every day of our lives is something special and it's just between you and the person you see in the mirror. This reminder was what I woke up this morning looking to be reminded of. Hope this helps you any time of the day when you come across this episode. Go out and be your heroic best today and every day!! Oh... before I forget, HERE is the link from the Brian Buffini podcast where he interviews Derek Daly... Awesome & powerful lessons found in this show too. Thanks for listening. Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode, recorded via Zoom on October 22nd, 2024, we are joined by Becky Tolnay, a Vistage Chair and Professional Facilitator based in Tallahassee, Florida. This episode is titled, "From Five-Star Service to Executive Excellence: A Vistage Chair's Quality-Driven Leadership Journey." With over 30 years of experience in performance improvement, primarily from her distinguished career at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, Becky Tolnay brings deep insights into fostering customer-centric culture and driving continuous improvement within teams. As a certified professional facilitator through the International Association of Facilitators, she has mastered core facilitation competencies that enhance her ability to guide and develop business leaders. Throughout the conversation, Tolnay shares her remarkable journey from starting as an accounts receivable clerk at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead to becoming an Area Director of Performance Improvement and Quality. Her career trajectory was shaped by a pivotal moment when she accepted a role as Director of Quality in 1994, despite initial hesitations about public speaking. This "happy accident," as she calls it, led to a transformative career in quality management and facilitation. After 25 years with Ritz Carlton, Tolnay established Tolnay Team Solutions and became a Vistage Chair, where she creates confident environments for business leaders to gain diverse perspectives and accelerate their growth. Her unique approach to group facilitation, influenced by her extensive background in quality management at Ritz Carlton, demonstrates how excellence in hospitality principles can enhance executive coaching and peer advisory group management. The episode reveals powerful insights about the intersection of quality management and executive coaching. Tolnay's approach to group facilitation, shaped by her Ritz Carlton experience, emphasizes the importance of creating intentional cultures through clearly defined values and consistent reinforcement. Her implementation of core values - integrity, communication, commitment, growth mindset, courage, creativity, effectiveness, and relationships - provides a framework for building high-performing peer advisory groups. A significant takeaway is Tolnay's emphasis on observation and diagnosis before action. Drawing from her father's veterinary practice and her quality management background, she demonstrates how careful observation and thoughtful questioning lead to better problem-solving outcomes. This approach challenges the common tendency among executives to jump to conclusions based on past experiences, instead encouraging deeper exploration and understanding. The episode also highlights the importance of creating systematic approaches to excellence while maintaining flexibility and authenticity. Tolnay's implementation of the "Best B" recognition system and her method of anchoring group values at the beginning and end of meetings shows how simple yet consistent practices can reinforce desired behaviors and create lasting cultural change. This systematic approach to group dynamics, combined with genuine care for individual growth, exemplifies the balance between structure and humanity in effective executive coaching. The Arete Coach Podcast seeks to explore the art and science of executive coaching. You can find out more about this podcast at aretecoach.io. Throughout the episode, she speaks passionately about leadership, her desire to create a positive, large-scale impact, and how her diverse experiences inform her approach to developing leaders. A standout quote from the episode comes when Rupal offers advice to young girls: "Choose your peers very carefully.
