We are discussing Hayao Miyazaki's 1992 anti-war love letter to aviation and flying pigs: Porco Rosso! Including; gender roles, the effects of war, curses, rising fascism, romance, cute kids, ambiguous endings, and much more. Remember, it's better to be a pig than a fascist. This episode was originally released on May 1, 2023 I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Porco Rosso (Japanese: 紅の豚, Hepburn: Kurenai no Buta, lit. 'Crimson Pig') is a 1992 Japanese animated adventure-fantasy film[1] written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is based on Hikōtei Jidai ("The Age of the Flying Boat"), a three-part 1989 watercolor manga by Miyazaki.[2] It stars the voices of Shūichirō Moriyama, Tokiko Kato, Akemi Okamura and Akio Ōtsuka. Animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Japan Airlines and the Nippon Television Network, it was produced by Toshio Suzuki and distributed by Toho. Its score is by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi. The plot revolves around an Italian World War I ex-fighter ace, now living as a freelance bounty hunter chasing "air pirates" in the Adriatic Sea. However, an unusual curse has transformed him into an anthropomorphic pig. Once called Marco Pagot (Marco Rossolini in the American version), he is now known to the world as "Porco Rosso", Italian for "Red Pig".

Guest: Paul Dalley, aka Seaplane Paul Hosts: Dave Homewood Recorded: 10th of January 2026 Released: 1st of February 2026 Duration: 3 hour 52 minutes 49 seconds In this extra-length Wings Over New Zealand Show “Flying Boat Month” episode Dave Homewood speaks with Paul Dalley, who grew up with aviation around him thanks to his grandfather Ian Henry, a well-known propeller maker. Paul talks about learning to fly, his adventures flying his Piper Cub in Japan while running a language school there, and flying air displays there with fellow Kiwi pilot Robert Fry and others. He talks about flying in Australia where he’d planned to buy a tourism flying business and how things changed. And flying in Papua New Guinea. And then he ended up purchasing a Lake Buccaneer in New Zealand and he took it up to Vanuatu and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a flying boat pilot in the Pacific, just like Jake Cutter in one of his favourite childhood television shows, Tales of the Gold Monkey, and the 1992 film Porco Rosso. Paul has some wonderful adventure stories and ells of some seriously scary moments in the air, in Japan and in the Pacific. He has real insight into the joys of flight too. So sit back and listen to the stories of Seaplane Paul. Above: The golden sands of a tropical Pacific beach, and Paul Dalley’s Lake Buccaneer flying boat. Paul Dalley Paul with his Piper Super Cub in Japan. Top: Stephen Collins as Jake Cutter with Jack (played by Leo the Dog) in the 1982-82 American television series Tales of the Gold Monkey. Bottom: Jake’s classic Grumman flying boat, Cutter’s Goose. The series was a huge inspiration for Paul that led to his fulfilment of a childhood dream of flying his own flying boat on island adventures in the South Pacific. For this, we watched the English dub from 2005; I know, I know, subs over dubs, but so it goes. Starring (in the dub) Michael Keaton, Cary Elwes, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Susan Egan, David Ogden Stiers, and Brad Garrett. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

What happens when you mix the whimsical world of Studio Ghibli with the gritty backdrop of post-World War I Europe? Thanks to one of our Patrons, we explore the often-overlooked, "Porco Rosso," in our latest edition of International Feature. Many consider this film a hidden gem that offers a fresh perspective within the beloved Ghibli collection, standing out against more recognized titles like "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle."From the breathtaking animation that Studio Ghibli is renowned for to the poignant themes of historical significance, "Porco Rosso" captivates us with its unique narrative style. We unravel the layers of this film, acknowledging both its visual brilliance and its narrative quirks, like unresolved plot points and the peculiar romantic undertones. While some of these elements might prompt mixed feelings, we appreciate the distinctive charm that this film offers, particularly for the biggest fans of the Ghibli universe. Looking ahead, we ponder the future Ghibli adventures on the podcast with titles like "Princess Mononoke" and "Grave of the Fireflies" on our radar. Letterbox'd Synopsis:  In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious Porco Rosso, a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew's American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo and his longtime friend Madame Gina.

We have a new game for you this week, beloved listeners! Ben from Syndicated with Lesley and Ben returns to the show to play a Chaos in Stereo classic with us - Is It More Like? The rules of the game are simple: in each round, one of the hosts thinks of a movie, and the other hosts each take turns trying to guess said film by asking if it's more like one movie or a different one - for example, The Wickerman (1973) or John Wick (2014). The host being asked will say which movie is more like the one they're thinking of, and the guessing continues until the guessers figure out the movie! There are additional smaller rules mentioned in episode as well, but that's the basic premise. Note: This episode is missing some initial audio, so it opens with an explanation as well as the rules of the game instead of the normal Sneople opener. Who knows?? Someday,…..the full episode may be recovered…………………. Also in this episode Matty says that I Know What You Did Last Summer came out in 1977 instead of 1997 but they want everyone to know that was a verbal fumble and they promise they knew the correct year the whole time, they swear.

Film: Porco Rosso van Studio Ghibli, van My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away en onlangs nog The Boy and The Heron.

Initially conceived as a short film exclusively for in-flight guests of Japan Airlines, the film eventually grew in ambition and scope and now stands as one of Miyazaki's most underrated, visually transcendent masterpieces. We discuss the film's many classic Hollywood touchpoints, including the films of Howard Hawks, Victor Fleming, and John Ford and how these influences create a sense of fantasy more grounded that other Miyazaki works. Then, we discuss the film's setting amidst the rising tide of fascism in the Adriatic and its connection to the moving character portrait at its core. Finally, we discuss how 'Porco Rosso' (perhaps more than any other film) suggests some of the director's late period affinities in works like 'The Wind Rises'.Plus: We talk Miyazaki's latest work 'The Boy & The Heron', which we have all had the chance to see ahead of its wide release in the US Friday, 12/8/23. Follow Adam Sullivan on Twitter.Read and subscribe to Adam's newsletter "eventually, forever".....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we go back to celebrate Pittsburgh's first son - Michael Keaton. Our B-Sides today are: Clean and Sober, The Dream Team, One Good Cop, and My Life. Our guest is official five-timer Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game.  We dive deep into analyzing how the actor took boring lead roles and made them sing. We marvel at the surprisingly small filmography of model-turned-movie star Rene Russo. We lament the early-90s politics of One Good Cop and we celebrate the fact that The Dream Team has basically aged okay! Which is a near-miracle. Finally, Cory and I describe the difficulty of even finishing watching My Life as fathers with young kids. Perhaps more importantly, does My Life has a premise that is far more famous than the movie itself? Yes! What are other movies like that? Additionally, we mention how 1990 mega-hit is great actually despite its cultural ridicule, and Tony Goldwyn (Ghost co-star) is underrated, and Keaton has a new directorial effort that just premiered at TIFF. There's also his early history as a funny stand-up comedian, his amazing voice work in Porco Rosso, and every moment in the comedy The Other Guys. [School of Movies 2023] This was a whimsical period for Ghibli, they tried a few new things, and established one or two absolute mainstays.  1991: Only Yesterday (1m 50s) 1992: Porco Rosso (11m 50s) 1993: Ocean Waves (25m 10s) 1994: Pom Poko (41m 10s) 1995: Whisper of the Heart (59m 40s) There's a disarmingly frank and sympathetic story of a schoolgirl hitting adolescence wrapped in a Hallmark movie about returning to your rural home town after the big city has crushed your spirit. Conversely there's a high school romance about a doormat crushing on a girl who thinks only of herself. Then there's two of the most abiding and beloved of their canon, in the tale of a high school girl who likes a musical boy which winds up being a powerful statement on creativity, and then there's the World War II pilot who was turned into a pig. But he's much rather be porcine than  fascist.  And finally, an ecological parable starring enormous raccoon testicles!
