#584 Who can be good? David in one of the most loved Psalms, Psalm 23, wrote; “Surely Goodness and Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” So the goodness that he speaks of, where does it come from? And when you realize where that goodness comes from, you too will know that it is chasing after you. So, for goodness sakes, today let's talk about goodness….

Both through green pastures… a sweet moment of connection with your child or the joy of a growing family… and through dark valleys… the frustrations and struggles of motherhood or the silent mental battles being fought… in it all, God's goodness and mercy accompany us.

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life (NKJV)" Psalm 23: 6
Psalm 23:6 "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:" This verse begins with a word of certainty- surely. God promises that without any doubt or question, goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. His goodness provides for every need, and His mercy covers every failure. Goodness and mercy keep us hedged in, walking the path of life, pressing towards the mark for the prize, Jesus Christ. As we walk the path of life, we leave a trail of God's goodnes and mercy behind. Oh that our prayer might be that all who come behind would find us faithful! Opening Song: Psalm 23 (Surely Goodness and Mercy) (https://open.spotify.com/track/2Zxili8AmCuqiomg9HzTgH?si=f7960e34aa3f42d6) by Shane Barnard Lyrics: The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want In green pastures He makes me lie down He restores my soul and leads me on For His name for His great name Surely goodness surely mercy Right beside me all my days And I will dwell in Your house forever And bless Your holy name You prepare a table right before me In the presence of my enemies Though the arrow flies and the terror of night Is at my door I'll trust You Lord And even though I walk through the valley Of the shadow of death I will fear no evil (And) even though I walk through the valley Of the shadow of death You are on my side (oh) Passage: 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:1–6 ESV) Musical Reflection: Jesus Loves Me by William B. Bradbury Reflection Notes: This sweet and familiar song was written in 1861 for the composer's church school and has become a favorite because of the warm reminders associated with its text: “Jesus loves me, this I know.” Prayer: O Lord, show Your mercy to me and gladden my heart… I am like the sheep that went astray. O Good Shepherd, seek me out and bring me home in accord with Your will. Let me dwell in Your house all the days of my life and praise You for ever and ever with those who are there. Amen. -Jerome
As we continue through Psalm 23, we're finishing up a look into the life of Joseph. Joseph's life was characterized by betrayal, injustice, confusion, and—above all—years and years of waiting.
In the next teaching from our series called “Goodness In the Middle,” Pastor J.D. draws a parallel between this psalm of David and the life of Joseph – one of the most engaging characters in the entire Bible. Joseph lived a life of high's and low's, but through it all, he trusted that God was ultimately in control.

“And this may denote the presence of Christ with his people in afflictions, who will not suffer those waters to overflow them, and in death itself, when the swellings of Jordan shall not come near them to distress them; and when the covenant of grace will appear firm and sure, and be their great support.” -John Gill

“Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that is working in us.” -Ephesians 3:20 Exceedingly above Abby's anxiety. Exceedingly above the fear and unknown of having a child with a disability. Exceedingly above long hospital stays. Exceedingly above the heartbreak and questions of losing a child. Exceedingly above depression. Exceedingly abundantly above ALL- through God's power in us! The Lord has shown Himself faithful to Abby Sacran again and again so that she can now say and believe it in her heart that “Surely GOODNESS and MERCY are pursuing me all the days of my life…” -Psalm 23:6 We can't wait for you to hear Abby's story!
What is really so special about Psalms 23? There are several popular hymns based on its words. Are these just words? God's words need to ‘live' in our heart – not just go in one ear and out the other, as the saying is. In today's non-stop world, that happens all too easily. Its' words should, indeed must encourage a peace of mind that is a rare blessing today! “The LORD is my shepherd!” Have you ever thought that Jesus would have seen his Father as his shepherd and what these words would have meant to him? The LORD shepherded David throughout his life, he “put away” his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah even before he asked, because he knew the overall condition of David's heart. A good sheep is ever listening for his shepherd's call. If the sheep are genuinely listening for the shepherd's voice they will never be in dire need, there will be still waters – and when life gets difficult the shepherd will be there to see to their restoration. Of course the need for restoration indicates some difficult or even desperate situation when the sheep might, for a moment; cry out, “My God why have you forsaken me?” We read this at the start of yesterday's Psalm 22. This surely indicates David had some moment of desperation – before his greater son used those words and then gave the climaxing cry, “It is finished” [John 19 v.30] “He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake” [v.3] Notice it is “for his name's sake”- it is because we bear his name, we belong to him, if we have taken on his name in baptism we already “dwell” within the embrace of his loving care. Do we sometimes become blind to this?. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for you are with me” [v.4] There are few if any who have not experienced “valleys” – but it is the valleys that help us to appreciate the high hills and the vision they give to us. Life that is lived on a flat plain provides no vision. What are the “rod and staff” that comfort us? They are symbols, we suggest, of strength and support; and the control (when needed) possessed and given by the shepherd. How marvellous is the vision of the last verse, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow meall the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/christadelphians-talk/message
