In this episode Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Rodney Clapp about the state of Christian life in a time of profound change. Exploring what it means for Christians to live as witnesses to the Gospel in a radically changing world, Rodney looks at the recent history of the Evangelical Church in America, and the longing for a Christian nationalism that reasserts control over the cultural narrative. Rodney offers a radically different set of proposals, of humble practices rooted in a Biblical imagination, that eschew power and the need for control. Rodney is driven by a passion to call churches to rediscover their life and mission by learning to live without power and control. He believes that it is by living out of control that we discern the ways of God and live in anticipation of a new creation - of a healed earth and of a healed people.Rodney Clapp is an author, editor and social commentator. He was a former columnist for The Christian Century as well as a longtime associate editor for Christianity Today. Until 1999 he was the senior editor for academic and general books at InterVarsity Press. He was also an editor with Brazos Press and is currently an editor with Wipf and Stock. His latest book is Living Out of Control, an extended proposal for how, in a post Christian context, Christian life ought to be shaped amidst declining empire and in an age of profound change.LinksFor Rodney Clapp:https://wipfandstock.com/author/rodney-clapp/https://wipfandstock.com/contact-information/BooksFamilies at the Crossroads (1993) A Peculiar People (1996) The Consuming Passion (1998) Border Crossings (2000) The People of the Truth with Robert E. Essentials Part 6– A Peculiar People MESSAGE SUMMARY: In exploring the essence of the church, we're reminded that it's far more than just a building. The church is a living, breathing community of believers, called out by God for a divine purpose. As we delve into the Greek word 'ekklesia,' we understand that we are God's chosen people, set apart and peculiar in His eyes. This message challenges us to embrace our identity as the messianic community, the body of Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. How can we tune into the Holy Spirit's frequency in our daily lives, allowing God's voice to guide us? As members of both the visible and invisible church, we're part of a grand tapestry of faith that spans across time and cultures. Let's reflect on how we can embody the marks of a true church in the 21st century - repenting, reproducing, reconciling, and showing relentless compassion. In doing so, we fulfill our calling as Christ's body on earth, bringing His love and truth to a world in desperate need. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. John 1:12f SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): 2 Peter 2:9; Luke 2:11; Ephesians 1:22-23; 1 Corinthians 12 (general reference to different functions in the body of Christ); Acts 1:4-5; Revelation 21:27. In this sermon on 1 Peter 2:9, Dave Rich emphasizes the Christian's identity and calling to proclaim His excellencies. He explains that believers are a chosen family, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for God's own possession. This new identity empowers and obligates believers to proclaim His excellence in word and deed. Rich reminds us that who we are in Christ determines what we do for Christ. ★ Support this podcast ★

Are individuals that are called to be unique. Let me say that differently, we are called to be different, as we see in the New Covenant, according to Peter, we are called to be a peculiar people, and that really means that we are called to be treasured by God. In this week's episode, Cat, Richard, and Charles are back again in search of more killer facts and ephemera, and the chance to convince the slightly garbled Disembodied Voice to award them the win! This week, Cat is in her element as she tackles radiocarbon dating, Charles is journeying into the topic of convict transportation, and, in typical fashion, Richard is taking on another niche subject…The Peculiar People.
