We dive into the intriguing question of where Jesus is in the biblical story so far. While Jesus may not be explicitly named, we explore how he is described and the context surrounding his coming. Through promises, such as defeating evil, blessing nations, and ruling in an everlasting kingdom, the Bible builds anticipation for the arrival of the promised Seed. We uncover the significance of various pictures in the story, such as the Passover Lamb, the Tabernacle, and the Temple which provide further understanding of the Seed's purpose. Finally, we discover the role of faith in righteousness and the anticipation for Jesus as the solution to humanity's problems.Bible ReadingsPsalm 1:1-6Psalm 2:1-12Psalm 145:1-21Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App! Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe famous expression, "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak,” resonates well with all three readings this Sunday. Shema Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The word Shema is Hebrew for listen. Having attuned ourselves to God and others via active listening, we are open to receiving God's revelation, further revealing the kingdom of God. Scripture Reading for November 3, 2024Deuteronomy 6:2-6Psalm 18:2-4, 47, 51Hebrews 7:23-28Mark 12:28-34
In this episode we talk about how the Bible is a means to the end of knowing Jesus more intimately, and we look at one specific practice we can do to approach the Scriptures this way.NET footnote on Psalm 23:6 and the word "follow" (or "pursue"): "The use of רָדַף (radaf, “pursue, chase”) with טוֹב וָחֶסֶד (tov vakhesed, “goodness and faithfulness”) as subject is ironic. This is the only place in the entire OT where either of these nouns appears as the subject of this verb רָדַף (radaf, “pursue”). This verb is often used to describe the hostile actions of enemies. One might expect the psalmist's enemies (see v. 5) to chase him, but ironically God's “goodness and faithfulness” (which are personified and stand by metonymy for God himself) pursue him instead. The word “pursue” is used outside of its normal context in an ironic manner and creates a unique, but pleasant word picture of God's favor (or a kind God) “chasing down” the one whom he loves."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 15:8John 17:3John 6:63Psalm 127:1Psalm 27:8Matthew 11:28Psalm 138:3Psalm 9:1-2Psalm 8:3-4Psalm 1:2-3Psalm 18:28-29Psalm 51:10Psalm 30:11-12Psalm 13:1-6Psalm 10:1Psalm 27:10Psalm 7:1-2Psalm 46:1-3Psalm 147:10-11Psalm 143:7-12Psalm 63:1-4, 8Psalm 139:1-16Psalm 23**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I said the guy who disciples me had me write on the front cover, "I read this book to know Jesus more." Tasting Is Believing Scripture References:Psalm 34:1-6Psalm 34:7-8Key Points:1. Repenting of our sins and accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, will give us a taste of God's goodness and favor.Psalm 34: 9-15Psalm 34:16-222. Getting a taste of His righteousness enables us to stay on the straight and narrow path, and God also reminds us that anything less will lead to His wrath.Hebrews 11:1-6Romans 10:173. Christians don't walk with blind faith, God gives us a vision for the mission. Matthew 28:16-20Romans 10:5-104. It's a easy process to invite Jesus on the inside, it's more difficult keeping the devil out, but it's well worth it, so believe and repent with your mouth.Romans 10:11-13

1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14Psalm 111Ephesians 5:15-20John 6:51-58 Proverbs 9:1-6Psalm 34:9-14Ephesians 5:15-20John 6:51-58The CollectAlmighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen.Old Testament1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I should give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?”It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.”The PsalmPsalm 111Confitebor tibi1 Hallelujah!I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, *in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.2 Great are the deeds of the Lord! *they are studied by all who delight in them.3 His work is full of majesty and splendor, *and his righteousness endures for ever.4 He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; *the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.5 He gives food to those who fear him; *he is ever mindful of his covenant.6 He has shown his people the power of his works *in giving them the lands of the nations.7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; *all his commandments are sure.8 They stand fast for ever and ever, *because they are done in truth and equity.9 He sent redemption to his people;he commanded his covenant for ever; *holy and awesome is his Name.10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; *those who act...

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn today's Gospel Jesus welcomes back the twelve Apostles. He sent them out to preach repentance, drive out demons, and cure the sick. Now they have returned, full of stories of their successes and anxious to tell Jesus all they have done. Jesus has missed his friends. The excitement and anticipation has been tempered though when Jesus and the twelve arrive at their intended place of rest, and the crowd has arrived there first. Our human tendency is to roll the eyes, get frustrated, and remove "distractions" as soon as possible. Instead, Jesus rolls up his sleeves and gets to work as they were "like sheep without a shepherd." Pastoral ministry can be challenging and exhausting at times. How does Jesus move to compassion and empathy so quickly? His security and rest reside primarily in His relationship with the Father. What is your habit of prayer and in prayer? If it is distant, I invite you now to come away and rest awhile with the Blessed Trinity. Scripture Readings July 21, 2024Jeremiah 23:1-6Psalm 23:1-6 Ephesians 2:13-18Mark 6:30-34

I meant to say "temptation to think or feel something" (implying something contrary to the Word of God). Obviously, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with thinking and feeling. God Himself thinks and feels. There are a number of things, Biblically, that are explicitly described as belonging to God. Amongst these is the choice between vengeance and mercy - a choice that God alone has the authority to make. God is not so selfish that He will not extend mercy to someone who asks for it, but it can only be given to those who are themselves merciful.03/24/2024 - Sunday NightScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Mark 12:17II Samuel 15:12, 31Isaiah 42:8II Corinthians 4:6Psalm 29:2Exodus 34:14Leviticus 27:30, 32Malachi 3:11Revelation 1:20Revelation 2:1Psalm 62:11Deuteronomy 32:35Romans 12:19Psalm 41:9Psalm 55:12-14Psalm 62:12Psalm 51:1-3, 7, 9-11

Prayer is not a talent that is simply innate in certain people, but it is a discipline that can and must be learned. Most commonly, those who don't know how to pray have not spent enough time in prayer, learning to pray. It is through the very process of making our flesh pray that we learn to do it and to delight in it. 01/21/2024 - Sunday MorningScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Luke 11:1Matthew 5:6Psalm 42:1-2Psalm 63:1-2I Peter 2:2Psalm 73:25Psalm 16:11Nehemiah 1:4II Chronicles 7:14Romans 13:11-14Revelation 3:20

In this episode we talk about the joy that comes as a result of being in the presence of God and how important it is that we be walking in that joy.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 72: A sacrifice of praiseListen to the sermon by J. D. Greear that I mentionedBelow is the quote from J. D. Greear that I read near the end. Two people asked for it after this lesson was originally given; so, I wanted to include it here as well in case anyone else wanted to note it down."When the Holy Spirit, your real Shepherd speaks, it's in the context of hope. Yes, He will convict you of sin, but when He does, it is redemptive. He identifies what He wants you to change, He gives you a plan to do it, and He assures you of His ability to accomplish it through your life. His voice leads to clarity, and love, and life. When one of the demonic realm speaks to you with a fiery dart, it is in the context of condemnation and despair. It is never clear what they want you to change, there is certainly no hope or no redemption in it. The voice just screams hopelessness and despair.…When our enemy speaks, it has the soundtrack of death, and defeat, and confusion, and despair. When Jesus speaks, it is filled with invitation, and clarity, and love, and hope. Any voice leading you to confusion and despair is your enemy's voice, even if it's using valid questions or pointing out true facts.…My shepherd never leads to confusion and darkness. He leads only to life. Even if Satan is pointing out true things in your life, if it's leading you to despair, recognize that as his voice and resist it.…In your life, the voice of despair is the voice of Satan and never the voice of the Holy Spirit."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 4:4Ephesians 1:17Psalm 63Psalm 4:6-7Numbers 6:24-26Psalm 16:11Psalm 34:5Psalm 34:8John 15:4-5Galatians 5:22-23Psalm 36:7-9Psalm 37:4Malachi 1:6-14Psalm 50:14-15Psalm 50:23Hebrews 13:151 Thessalonians 5:16-18Psalm 69:30-31Philippians 2:13Matthew 3:13-4:11James 1:2-4Romans 8:28James 1:25Psalm 66:16Psalm 34:1-3Proverbs 27:21Luke 17:11-19Hebrews 11:6Psalm 1:1-3John 15:9-11Psalm 33:1Psalm 40:16Psalm 59:17Psalm 71:8Hebrews 12:2Matthew 7:7James 4:2Philippians 4:6-7John 10:10Matthew 11:28Romans 8:1John 14:16-17Revelation 12:10-11Romans 8:33-34**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I switched the word order of Romans 8:28 (although it didn't affect the meaning). Here is the correct wording: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."When I said I could think of two times where the Lord really did something in my life and then I was hit with anxiety, I meant that there are two times I could think of that intense anxiety immediately followed what the Lord did. The God who created all things has a greatness that is so far beyond what our finite minds could comprehend.
