I wanted to share a small but important challenge I've encountered as a student engaging with Effective Altruism from a lower-income country (Nigeria), and invite thoughts or suggestions from the community. Recently, I tried to make a one-time donation to one of the EA-aligned charities listed on the Giving What We Can platform. However, I discovered that I could not donate an amount less than $5. While this might seem like a minor limit for many, for someone like me — a student without a steady income or job, $5 is a significant amount. To provide some context: According to Numbeo, the average monthly income of a Nigerian worker is around $130–$150, and students often rely on even less — sometimes just $20–$50 per month for all expenses. Today, The Two Mikes spoke with Lee Habeeb, who is the Vice President of Content and host, along with six other "storytellers", of the Salem Radio Network's program called "Our American Stories. The program is now five-and-a-half years old, episodes are each two-hours long, they appear five nights per week, and covers stories about American heroes -- well known and ones who are largely unknown, but surely merit public recognition. The title of each program seems to be eye-and-interest catching; for example: "No hands: No problem. Overcoming the Loss of Both My Arms", "The Blue Collars Leader of America's Most Innovative University", "Abolitionist John Brown", a "Washington's Farewell Address: The Story of America", and "Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World".
In this conversation, Elaine Parker, Alfredo Ortiz, and Lee Habeeb discuss the founding of Job Creators Network and the success of Lee Habeeb's show, Our American Stories. They emphasize the power of storytelling and how it can educate and inspire people. They also touch on the importance of capitalism and wealth creation, using biblical parables to illustrate their points. The conversation explores the themes of abundance, wealth, and the relationship between God and money. It emphasizes that wealth is not inherently bad, but the love of wealth can become idolatry. Tucker Carlson hosted an event with many of the Republican presidential candidates (except President Trump). We kicked off the show talking about the best interactions with some of the minor candidates, but big issues we need to have a conviction on. Then we talked about the actor's strike. Why should we care? How does this affect us? And what do they want exactly? We talked to the host of the TV show "Cheaters" who is a member of the union. There's also a huge lesson for us here on the effect of AI on all of our jobs; actors might be affected first.
