Episode 3 of the Greatest Hits features one of Mike's most oft-recommended interviews with Josh Shipp.Josh Shipp (@joshshipp)is an author, speaker, and youth empowerment expert. He has written several books on personal development and motivation, including "The Teen's Guide to World Domination" and "The Grown-Up's Guide to Teenage Humans." Shipp is known for his engaging and humorous speaking style, and has delivered keynote speeches at numerous conferences and events. As a former at-risk foster kid, he uses his personal experiences to connect with and inspire young people facing similar challenges. Shipp is also the host of the "Youth Speaker University" podcast, where he interviews other speakers and experts in the field of youth development. Mike Pacchione (@mpacc) is a public speaking coach who provides training and coaching for individuals looking to improve their speaking skills at BestSpeech.co. Pacchione is also a sought-after speaker himself, having delivered keynote speeches and workshops at conferences and events around the world.
As a former at-risk foster kid, Shipp found it difficult to trust adults: “The way I defined trustworthiness was: are you gonna not give up on me when I show you what I'm capable of? When I show you all my ugliness and all of my past and everything you didn't cause, but now you're gonna be dealing with…can you handle all of that?” Josh Shipp wants to pass that experience on to as many others as he can, so those adults can care for the kids in the way he needed: “Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.” This week, we talk to Josh Shipp about how growing up in foster homes and being a counterphobic six has impacted his current work as a global youth empowerment expert. Josh Shipp is an author & youth advocate, and television producer of a documentary TV series on A&E that follows his groundbreaking work with youth and families. He has written two national bestsellers, “The Grown-Up's Guide to Teenage Humans,” winner of the Nautilus Gold Award for Parenting & Family – and “The Teen's Guide to World Domination. What if you were the one? What if you were “the Rodney” in your teenager's life? Let me explain. Back in 2018, I read a book called *The Grown-Up's Guide to Teenage Humans by Josh Shipp. Well Josh shares his story about growing up as a foster kid who had been in and out homes for years. His goal when he arrived at a new home was to see how quickly he could get kicked out. He even kept a journal in which he would write the date he arrived, the date he was kicked out and what strategy he used to get the boot. Each time, he tried to beat his record. All of this changed when he arrived at Rodney's house at age 14. After 3 years of being disrespectful and mischievous, Rodney still did not kick him out. Josh decided to try one final reckless choice in which he ended up in jail. He thought to himself, this was it; Rodney will finally kick me to the curb. After spending the night in jail, Rodney picked him up and said the following to him, “Josh, you keep causing trouble, keep pushing us away, keep acting out but you gotta get it through your thick head son. We don't see you as a problem. We see you as an opportunity.” Rodney changed Josh's life forever and these words were the turning point. What if you are the Rodney in your son's or daughter's life. Maybe you are wondering why I am sharing about this book, but I am so excited to tell you about the book recommendations I am going to be doing in between the podcast interview episodes. I love to talk about books, but with my new schedule, I am not able to interview every week, so in the weeks in between, I am going to be sharing about books that have made an impact on my life. I also have another exciting announcement that I share at the end of the episode about another new series to the podcast. I will wait and let you listen for that special addition! If you are parenting a child nine or older, then you do not want to miss the wisdom from Josh's book! Also, I am so excited for someone to win a copy of Josh's book: *The Grown-Up's Guide to Teenage Humans. I am releasing some older episodes as re-runs this summer. These are some conversations that I enjoyed. Running re-runs allows me to take a few weeks to finish my manuscript. For more updates about my upcoming book sign up for my newsletter at Sarahbragg.com and you can follow me on Instagram @sarahwbragg Thank you for your continued support. We start by talking about the personalities of our kids. And I’ve been thinking so much how important it is that we understand our kids’ wiring so that we can figure out how to communicate with them—especially if they are teenagers. We talk about doing the hard work of parenting, why kids need a caring adult in their lives, and how to better understand teenagers. If you have teenagers or work with teenagers or have kids who will eventually be teenagers, then you will certainly enjoy this conversation. We talk about moving from an air traffic controller in the early years to a coach in the adolescent years. Click here for the original show notes to this episode.
