It may not feel like it, but Donald J. Trump began his second presidential term less than three weeks ago. The reality TV star turned GOP president wasted no time implementing his agenda, issuing dozens of Executive Orders, clearcutting opposition officials and entrusting billionaire donor Elon Musk with a broad mandate to revise the functions of the US government, often in seeming conflict with federal law and the constitution. These unilateral actions are testing the bounds of executive power beyond anything seen in American politics before.Congress – led by Trump's Republican Party - has been largely silent, with minority Democrats raising objections but to little effect. The courts have begun to weigh in, with mixed results. What to make of these unprecedented times in American history? To talk about all this, we're joined by Thad Kousser, professor of Political Science at UC San Diego. Kousser has written extensively on US and California politics and is an astute observer of American political life. With just seven weeks until the midterm elections, the key issues of this campaign are crystallizing. Democratic candidates are hitting the Republicans hard on abortion rights, while the GOP is focusing on the economy. Polling nationally shows that Democratic voters are highly motivated by the abortion issue, while Republicans don't really care very much about it. But the number one issue for voters in California, and nationally, remains the economy, inflation and jobs. So will this play out over the next two months? Why the two parties are addressing the contest so differently? To answer those questions, KCBS Radio Political Reporter Doug Sovern along with KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart talk with Thad Kousser, political science professor and Co-director of the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research at UC San Diego.

A government shutdown doesn’t inspire confidence. Politicians, their parties, and the leaders of those parties all get a hefty amount of blame from the American people. But you know that Winston Churchill quote about democracy being the best system except for all the others? It turns out there’s some truth to that. With today’s guest, we ask where all this gridlock comes from, what we can really do about it, and whether politics really deserves all the blame it gets. In this episode, Thad Kousser reveals some surprising facts about the political game and some useful tips for the American electorate to play it well.
