S06 Episode 277 | Questioning how we *value* garments & respecting the limits of partnership across fashion with Jesus Herrera

In episode 277, Kestrel welcomes Jesus Herrera — a model, clothing designer, vintage curator, and poet — to the show. Also known by their moniker Donatella because of their Instagram handle @donatellaversanchez, Jesus is the cofounder of the vintage jesus online store and Les Jesus fashion brand. “I've also brought space to my partnerships. I've also brought an understanding that I should not interfere and I should not demand from a culture that has existed for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years in one specific way, just because I have a purpose or just because I have a need or just because I have a goal in mind. My purpose, my need and my goal are my own. But my purpose and my need and my goal should not interfere with somebody else's happiness, with their way of life, with how they think that the best quality of life is lived or led.” -Jesus Have you ever noticed the way that certain garments are valued more than others? Or the way that some craftsmanship styles are aligned with couture or exceptional quality, and others are not held to that same regard? This week's guest reminds us of some of these ways that specific garments are valued differently than others, and how so often these perceptions are based largely around who wears those garments. For example, how does the fashion industry value a piece of clothing, if it's worn by the ladies who lunch? What about if it's worn by an Indigenous person? One theme that recurs throughout our conversation is finding ways to resist this dichotomy between who is valued and who is not. As this week's guest notes – “Not only one set of people who have a certain set of resources matter more than another set of people in the world. This is how we should be looking at community and politics and life.”  We also explore the expectations that come with capitalism, and how surrendering to those can hinder the development of meaningful partnerships and relationships.  For this week's guest, there are so many limits around partnership, and those limits should be respected. Quotes & links from the conversation: “But when I came to have better resources, I realized that that was not the case — that new things were not made of quality, that new things were not made of wonderful materials, that new things were not warm or didn't keep you always cozy. So, I think that's why I gravitated more toward that idea of sustainability — of using vintage things, of making things in really good quality fabrics, because that's just the experience I grew up with, out of necessity.” -Jesus (9:40) “The hardest person to be is the person that you say you are.” -a quote from Teri Agins that Jesus mentions The End Of Fashion by Teri Agins, book that Jesus mentions “We all live with contradictions — I live with a ton of contradictions and I'm not hiding them, which is something that I'm really proud of.” -Jesus (20:11) “This whole thing about never wanting to be wrong is the problem.” -Jesus (33:28) "Real partnership and good partnership is not someone coming in somewhere and saying, ‘I'm gonna do you a favor'. I don't come into any of my relationships thinking I'm going to do the other person a favor. I come into every relationship thinking — I'm gonna learn something. I come excited and I come ready to be impressed and mesmerized, because most of the times when I've come into anything with that mindset and with that open heart, I have been mesmerized, I have been impressed, I have learned something, I've been humbled by the experience — that's how I come into every experience, and that's partnership to me.” -Jesus (35:02) “I've also brought space to my partnerships. I've also brought an understanding that I should not interfere and I should not demand from a culture that has existed for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years in one specific way, just because I have a purpose or just because I have a need or just because I have a goal in mind.” -Jesus (37:47) “Meet the Designer Duo Marrying Traditional Mexican Craft With Forward-Thinking Fashion” in Vogue, article Kestrel mentions “From Indigenous Textiles to Gender Fluidity, Fashion Designer Jesus Herrera Wants Marginalized People to Be Seen & Respected” in Mexico In My Pocket, article Kestrel mentions The Vintage Jesus on Etsy > Les Jesus Website > Follow Les Jesus on Instagram > Follow The Vintage Jesus on Instagram > Follow Jesus on Instagram >

Will you obey Jesus and receive his transformational power? In this week's message, our campus pastor, Pete Bullette, speaks about how Jesus can transform us from the inside out, creating "new wine" where there was previously darkness. This is the second message of our series in the book of John, Come & See, where we are exploring what it means to seek Jesus and merge every aspect of our lives with his desire for us.

BAPTIZO! In the Old Testament types, shadows and symbols were used to foretell the redemptive work of Christ. This is the concept of Typology For eg White lambs were used to typify the True Lamb who will be spotless. Circumcision was used to typify the cutting off of the sinful part of man in Salvation. Baptism - to illustrate the burial and resurrection of Christ as a redemptive work. (Romans 6:3 -4) Communication in the Old Testament is a key difference between the New Testament In the Old Testament, there were types, shadows, and symbols, replete with the prophetic. (Heb 1:1 -3) The prophets said nothing wrong but the Son of God has more authority and clarity. In Christ, you can’t get the revelation of God wrong. In Christ, you see the exact image of God Heb 10:1 3 ways to identify a figure 1. It is made with human hands. Any aspect that involves man’s effort doesn’t reflect the redemptive reality in Christ. 2. If it predates the New Testament, it is not an ordinance in Christ and therefore shouldn’t continue. Some things can predate and should still continue but there must be a balance. It should tick the other boxes. 3. If the New Testament clearly identifies it as a symbol. In 1 Cor 5:7 Christ is our Passover. In Colossians 2:11 Christ is our circumcision Baptizo - Greek word of baptism (to Immerse.) 1 Cor 12: 13 Baptism is done by the Spirit and not with human hands By baptism, we get spiritually added to the lineage of Christ Colossians 2:12 describes how to be a beneficiary of what Christ did There are salvation metaphors Eg poverty Hunger and thirst Just like water, salvation satisfies and cleanses. In John 7:37-39 Jesus referred to water here as the spirit Christ mentions water repeatedly as a symbol of the Spirit in John 3:1-5 Water baptism = a symbol representing baptism by the Spirit. When the same thought is passed across all the synoptic gospels, we must know its significance. The baptism of Christ is of the Holy Spirit! (John 1:32-33, Luke 3:16, Matt 3:11, Mark 1:8) The baptism of water was only the picture of salvation. A type and shadow of what we now have by the Spirit! (Acts 11: 14-17)

In the Passover, we see how the sacrifice impacts the Messiah but in circumcision, we see how the sacrifice impacts us. Circumcision: Removal of the foreskin of the male penis. It signifies three things: 1. Identification: It was a strategy for people to recognize that the people belong to God (Genesis 17:9). No identification, such a person is cut off from his people. The purpose of the identification is the promise. 2. Promise: The promise is in the procreation and as such, a woman becomes a part of that covenant by carrying the seed of the circumcised. So, everyone partakes of the promise. 3. Protection: Exodus 12:48 The circumcision is like one placing a judgment on his flesh so that the security of the people is in the mark. We are not better than the world. It is by God's redemptive plan that we can escape this judgment. Hebrews 11:6 There must be a rub-off of my knowledge of God in my life. There must be confidence I must have had seen how God dealt with man all through scripture. Cain was marked and had confidence that he'd be untouched. David believed so much in God that when Goliath came around, he wasn't scared to face him. He didn't boast about his pedigree but he saw the circumcision as his protection. He saw a man without a covenant. Joshua lost a battle and knew something must be wrong. He had to inquire. Romans 4:8-12 In Abraham, we see that we do not have to be circumcised according to the law to be declared righteous but by faith. For Abraham, circumcision was a symbol of the covenant. The most important thing was not the symbol but the covenant. So those who were marked needed to believe in the covenant otherwise the circumcision meant nothing. That why we had uncircumcised believers and Jewish unbelievers. Circumcision - Post redemption Ephesians 2:11-13 Paul had to describe what circumcision he was referring to here because circumcision now had a new meaning. Christ is the actual circumcision. He was cut away so that we can be identified with God. Colossians 2:11-13 Christ on the cross is our circumcision, cutaway for us. The true doctrine of circumcision is that in Christ, we received a new life.

John 16:7 God took on flesh and dwelled amongst man. Knowing Jesus and the rules of knowing Jesus is different from the usual sociological means. The way to truly know God is by his word and his spirit. Apostle Paul, though he never saw Christ incarnate, knew Jesus as much as the other Apostles. The disciples all scattered when Jesus was arrested, Peter also denied him. The religious leaders must have felt victorious over Jesus, but when he died something changed in them. God is spirit, growing in our love and knowledge of him is different, we get deeper in our convictions and beliefs by his word and not by experience. The Divine Order of revelation is first theological before it is experiential. If you don’t know the word of God you don’t know God. John 1:1 Moses was a man full of experience but he still prayed to know God. You can’t separate God from his word, His word is his personality. Jesus said it’s for our benefit that he “goes”. He believed that the disciples would be better of when he left, and they have the spirit because you can only know so far without his spirit. John 5:39 You stand a better chance knowing God in his word than by experiences. If you want to discern Jesus, look in his word. There’s how to know God. Signs and Miracles are great but search the scriptures. The word of God testifies of him. Luke 24:15-26 Jesus expounded to the men on the Journey to Emmaus his identity through the scriptures. When they discerned him in the word, he broke bread with them (This is the experiential part). There’s a Supernatural Order to knowing God – First through his words. John the Baptist was the fore-runner of Christ, he had the sole purpose of showing the world the Messiah. But after all the encounters he had, when he was thrown in prison, He told his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Luke 7:19 What truly makes for a strong conviction in God is His word and His spirit. This is what will make you stand the test of time.
