"Trust your heart, because in addiction, we lose faith in our own judgement and what we see as right or wrong," says “Taylor”, the name he gave himself after he embraced sobriety After years of struggling to leave addiction behind, he works to help others find their way to a sober life. "Have faith in yourself,” he says. “Believe in yourself because that's the only way that you're going to get sober and stay sober." Born in Sedalia, Missouri in a segregated community, his early years were marked with the traumas inherent in racism. At 10 he witnessed an event that would change the trajectory of his life, casting him into an abyss so deep it would take years to dig himself out.But dig deep he did. Now, more than seven and a half years sober, he is grateful for the life he has and for the family, both biological and chosen, who have loved and supported him. Today he has built a life he is proud of, one in which service to others is central. As you listen to this episode, consider:We all have times of struggle, when we need someone to listen. Who do you depend on? Taylor speaks about the importance of having someone to listen. Learning to listen means meeting people where they are, without judgement or expectation. Kelly Cates was joined by Jamie Redknapp and Theo Walcott on Saturday Night Football and watched Arsenal travel to West Ham. The Gunners cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the table with their 5-2 win at the London stadium. Redknapp heaped praise on Bukayo Saka, saying that ‘his level is frightening' after the winger registered another two assists and a goal.Saka was named as player of the match and spoke to Natalie Gedra after the game, and said he takes ‘pleasure from creating and scoring but the greatest pleasure is to win'. There are also the postmatch views from both Mikel Arteta and Julen Lopetegui, who was critical of some of Anthony Taylor's refereeing decisions.
Summary In this conversation, Anthony Taylor of SME Strategy discusses the importance of business strategy as a series of choices that organizations must make. Taylor shares insights on overcoming fear of failure, the process of strategic planning, and the steps to develop an effective strategy. He highlights the importance of focusing on outcomes and making decisions quickly to adapt to changing circumstances. Takeaways Strategy is fundamentally about making choices. Clear destinations are essential for effective strategy. Alignment among team members is crucial for success. Setting realistic goals helps avoid the fear of failure. The benefit of the future must outweigh the pain of change. Organizations should celebrate their current state before moving forward. The strategic planning process is applicable to all organizations. Focus on outcomes rather than just activities. Make decisions quickly and iterate as needed. The Reds had a difficult away trip to the Emirates on Sunday, improving on last year's performance with a draw against Arsenal. We will look ahead to Brighton at home (after we've played Brighton away) and Leverkusen in the Champions league. If we have time we will look at what else is happening in the footy world - including the sad departure of our favorite Man Utd manager (maybe even more than Olly). Part One - Arsenal 2, Liverpool 2: xG - 0.92 to 0.81 - 0.77 to 0.37 in the first half Lots of overloads on the right side, but surprisingly few clear cut chances (2 big chances - Merino?) Robbo - much discussion about his trajectory, First half performance: No corners, but 5 ‘daft' free kicks.Set piece at 43 - Partey soft foul, Gabriel blocking Konate, not enough for it to be a foul. Could Ali have saved their 2 goals? 39 long balls from Kelleher, did it hurt us to bypass midfield so much? 18 - beautiful corner - using their aggressiveness (Macca and Ibou) against them Saka and Havertz go to ground very easily - although VVD's couple of hacks at the latter were tasty. Gabriel getting a foul while holding onto Darwin is laughable - ‘a fuckin Joke' in fact. Second half - we held onto the ball longer said Virgil We started more on the front foot - 63 with the changes, felt like we had already started to look better Arsenal stopped pressing as much - trying to slow the game down. Watching back I was prepared to hate their time wasting. I don't know if I can honestly claim there was that much of it Gabriel and Timber both looked injured Trossard kicked in the face by Grav at 68 - oh wait Antony Taylor gets another one wrong 70 to 80 - Sean Rogers thinks we were terrible. The stop start of the game really seemed to get to us. Timber went off at 72. Didn't create that much Some Salah moments - 57 just delays the ball to Diaz, but Diaz could have held his run? Saliba vs. Konate and other delusional Arsenal fan media. Anthony Taylor gave them everything said one not particularly unhinged Arsenal fan. Usual inconsistency with his yellow cards - Rice committed multiple fouls, Macca just 1 I think. Arteta - ‘we did well given the situation we are in'. Twitter response, ‘Is the situation in the room with you right now, Mikel?' Injuries (try being without your center backs for half a season, 30 minutes is nothing), decisions. Have to mention the victim mentality that Artie is instituting. Esp amongst fans who are outraged that their third goal was chalked off, after three fouls, and hand ball and a potential offsides. Graeme Le Saux more of a dick than Stephen Warnock? This is brilliant from Arsenal - his first half observation. End of the game - numbers were even, but Arsenal edged it for me…. Part Two - Brighton and Leverkusen - 2 home games Also - Ibou, Jota and Sunday Narratives Team selections Predictions Part 3 - elsewhere: Could need 3 replacement defenders next season:O Trent wants to win the Balon D'Or - err, not happening at Real Madrid mate. Amorim then - 2023-24 Out of possession, Amorim's side boasted one of the meanest defensive records on the whole continent last season (‘Chance prevention', 98 out of 99). Only Arsenal and Feyenoord had a lower non-penalty expected goals (xG) conceded than Sporting's 0.78 per 90 minutes across Europe's top seven leagues. We will be back next week with a review of the Brighton and Leverkusen games. Thanks to Daz and Enrique for joining me, Paul. And most of all, thank you dear listener for joining us. Nottingham Forest have been fined £750,000 for their tweet after defeat to Everton at the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Forest lost the game 2-0 but were furious after three penalty appeals were rejected by referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Stuart Attwell, now famously tweeting 'Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept. We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn't change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.' That tweet has been viewed more than 46m times with the FA now hitting Forest with their second biggest fine ever as the club immediately said they will appeal. A chemical engineer turned community development organizer, Anthony Taylor shares the career journey that led him to founding Melanin in Motion, a Community Wellness Center program that connects children of color—and their families – with active pursuits like skiing, cycling, kayaking. Melanin in Motion was a Twin Cities Business 2024 Community Impact Award winner. “I noticed my white friends, when they think about preparing their kids for law school, they're putting them in the woods. That's the secret for making more lawyers,” Taylor says. “I want all communities to realize the benefits of municipal, state, federal investment in natural places that can show up in children being resilient, confident, and collaborative.” Taylor talks about how working for successful Minnesota wellness companies, Life Time and Aveda, helped him become a well rounded leader, and what he learned from his own startups, Spa One and Simply Organic Beauty, that led him to shift course and work for the Loppet Foundation and as president of equity outdoors for the YMCA of the North. “Melanin in Motion really is the culmination of that idea, where we see culture as an asset,” Taylor says. He also gives us a preview of his next venture: RiverNorth Development Partners, a social impact development group that is working to create a business district in North Minneapolis that prioritizes “equity driven employers” that agree to create skilled jobs for area residents who have been marginalized. Ion Aerospace is first to sign on, with plans to open on West Broadway in 2025. Following our conversation with Taylor, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship where associate professor Alex Johnson teaches entrepreneurship. He talks about the pros and cons of starting a venture on your own versus within a larger organization, and explains the difference between an inventor and an innovator. “Inventors create things. Innovators identify the problem, the value, and build a solution.”

Shannon and Anthony Taylor, and Deb and Jared Manns, started Legacy Bundles as two families with seven kids who knew there had to be an easier, more cost-effective way to keep kids in nice clothes that fit. Their goal was to help parents keep up with clothes that fit their kids and their budgets while saving time and storage space. There is so much to go around, too. There are 92 million tons of global textile waste every year, with clothing making up over 7% of the total waste. Only 1% of clothes are recycled into new garments. Through companies like Legacy Bundles, parents finally have options. About Anthony Taylor:Anthony Taylor is the CEO of SME Strategy. Anthony has facilitated strategy sessions for organizations big and small across North America and beyond. He is the author of two books and the host of the Strategy and Leadership Podcast. He holds a degree in business administration, with a specialization in marketing. Anthony speaks fluent French, loves soccer, and one of his life goals is to visit every MLB Stadium.Anthony brings an electric energy that captivates and inspires people around him. His love for people and his commitment to their success comes through in his facilitations and everyday life. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Anthony Taylor discuss:The importance of strategic planning and how it links with the development of culture within organizationsCommon misunderstandings and misperceptions companies have about strategic planning and how these can hinder their successThe role of culture change as a prerequisite for successful strategy implementationThe significance of addressing team dynamics simultaneously for effective strategic plan executionThe purpose and effectiveness of vision and mission statements in guiding organizations toward achievable goals Key Takeaways:Effective strategic planning requires significant effort and collaboration among the organization to implement successfully over a two to three-year period.Creating clear agreements and processes within a team sets the foundation for trust and allows the team to work through tough issues, becoming better together.Strategic plans serve both internal and external purposes, supporting marketing, sales, and organizational goals, with the level of stakeholder involvement varying throughout the process.A vision statement is a fixed endpoint in time, while a mission statement is more of a general direction.Measuring values compliance is challenging, but aligning values with the vision through workshops, coaching, and reinforcing behaviors can lead to achieving the desired outcomes and behavior changes that support the organization's vision. "A strategic plan should span 3-10 years, but it must remain flexible and adaptable to account for unpredictable changes in the external environment.” — Anthony Taylor Connect with Anthony Taylor: Website URL: https://www.smestrategy.net/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonyctaylor604/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOHLNRrpk3rGUdg7qUQjiog See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Hanz Jimuel Alvarez Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. This week's pod comes unexpectedly live from the home of Coventry City (it'll all make sense inside the opening five minutes). In the Premier League, much has been discussed about Tottenham's need for a defensive set-piece coach. Richard Lee, however, isn't so sure. Neither was he convinced Cody Gakpo should have been allowed to tap into an empty after confusion reigned between Alphonse Areola and referee Anthony Taylor in West Ham's draw with Liverpool. Elsewhere, Seny Dieng is finishing a disruptive campaign strongly at Middlesbrough, Russell Martin's decision to play Alex McCarthy over Joe Lumley at Southampton is discussed and, as tends to be standard practice on the final day of the league season, a number of understudies were given some much-needed minutes - and thus a mention on this very podcast. More importantly, the Clean Sheet Club King of 2023-24 is revealed.
Ste & Chris discuss Cody Gakpo's performance and whether the Dutch forward was unlucky in the second half when the referee Anthony Taylor seemingly stopped him from scoring after West Ham's goalkeeper Alphonse Areola dropped the ball following a restart.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/redmentv. Salah and Klopp have a spat on the sideline. An ugly end to what has been a great partnership. (7:38) Anthony Taylor showing again why Premier League referees are amongst the worst in the world. (38:02) What has been behind Liverpool's bad form? What was the catalyst? (49:25) Debating if Leverkusen go unbeaten and win all trophies, where it would rank amongst All-Time achievements over a Season. (1:37:45)
After missing a match we'd all like to forget, the ATP Is back to capture all details of a 2-0 victory over Notts Forest in a massive weekend for Everton and its future. Alex and Ryan get into all the drama of a match where the VAR and xG Gods seemed to finally show favor to Everton. While the match wasn't pretty, it definitely had its share of moments from bangers from distance to incidents of violence. We also bring in a ton of listener comments to talk about the lineup changes, the wildly inconsistent officiating of Anthony Taylor, the bizarre post-match Twitter response of Forest, and conclude with a bit of analysis of the relegation battle. We also hope everyone in enjoying Toffeefest in Chicago this weekend – wish we were there – and hope for the best for Beto. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Marco Worrall, Chelsea author and Gate 17 publisher to look back at Chelsea's 1-0 win over Fulham. In part one we discuss Chelsea's laborious first half AGAIN with too many touches and often poor ones; too slow in the build up and of course no idea how to hit the back of the net. Until referee Anthony Taylor shocked the entire world by awarding Chelsea a penalty at the end of the half, which Cole Palmer put away for his 9th goal of the season. The second half was much better with more energy, pressing and more direct with both Sterling and Gallagher hitting the post. But Chelsea couldn't kill the game off and the last 10 minutes was a shambles, aided and abetted by Taylor and Keystone Kops defending, with stupid free kicks given away, running into defenders and wrong passes. At least we cheered the hoofs up field as Chelsea eventually saw the game out, but it was stressful! In part two we praise Petrovic who was quietly impressive again. Should he be Chelsea's No.1 keeper? Enzo was more dynamic and Caicedo did good terrier like work. Colwill had a decent game albeit not suited to the left back role. Just as well Chilwell came on with 23 minutes to go, but replacing Sterling as winger not Colwill at left back! A win is a win albeit a marginally ugly one but are there genuinely signs of encouragement and improvement? The stats don't lie. And what was Frank Lampard sitting next to Todd Boehly all about? ; Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Align your team, strategy and actions How to get your team on the same page Episode 189 (Anthony is based in Vancouver, BC) In this conversation with Anthony Taylor we explore: The challenge and process of aligning the elements of the strategic plan The importance of focusing on one destination How to think of the organization first and your department second Why culture is central to strategy How long should your strategic plan be? The necessary questions around priorities and resources The relevance of vision, mission and values The importance of clarifying your intended message to your team How many pages should your strategic plan be? About our guest Anthony Taylor: Anthony is the CEO of SEM Strategy, which facilitates strategic planning for SME companies and non-profits. Learn more about Anthony and the services of his company here https://www.smestrategy.net/ ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Anthony Taylor: Anthony, as we prepare to wrap up, if you could sit down with a business leader, who's planning to have a how redoing type meeting, you know, let's review. We put together the strategy last year, and it's time for him to get him or her to get together with their team. And if you could give them one, two or three pieces of advice going into this meeting to make this meeting more effective checking in, how are we doing? What, one, two or three pieces of advice would you offer? Just before I do, I just want to say thank you for having me on that your intended message podcast. It's been super fun. I love this conversation. And so for leaders that are about to get into how we're doing meeting, and a couple kind of best practices, I think one is focus on creating a safe space with your team. Okay, and when we say safe, you know, we can't say necessarily psychological safe, we tried to talk about accountable, but really have the intention clear, you know, we're trying to focus on the process versus the people. So if you can kind of separate the individuals from the outcomes and just say, hey, the purpose is to look at the outcome. And I'll give you the agenda is what did we do well, and what didn't we do well, and focus not on who did it or who didn't do it. Look, as a company, you'll have everybody more willing to discuss criticism and challenges and that kind of thing. So focus on process versus people. Number two, is create the framework for like, why are we doing this? You know, we're doing this review, so that we can move forward to that next level. And so if everybody is clear about what the next level is, then they'll recognize kind of what's at stake for doing the review. And the way that I say it a different way or way to reframe it is the work that we put in is a function of our goals. If we have small goals, it'll be Don't we have to do less work for it. It's less challenging. So if we have big ambitious goals, then we need to do big ambitious work to get there. So it kind of helps you overcome those challenges. So one process and people to have something big at stake. And if there's a third one, just make it fun. team's got to be out, you know, sometimes it's stressful. They have to be out of work. It's psychologically heavy work. You know, just make it enjoyable. Say, Hey, we love our jobs. We'd like to work we do, hopefully, like your job. And saying, like, Let's just enjoy today. It doesn't need to be doom and gloom. Let's take the opportunity to celebrate all of the good things that happened in the year. And then you'll say, Wow, we actually accomplished more than we thought. Most people just focus on the negative versus looking at like, hey, the only reason we have as much negative bad stuff as much stuff we didn't do is because we did so much they built the next level that's more challenging. That's just levels. So if you can get your team doing that, and focus on continually improving, focusing on the process and having something bigger at stake, you'll have a great meeting, and your team will be even more aligned than before. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills.
