Throughout our marriage and family podcast series, we've looked at our society's gender confusion and how it's affecting our children, especially in schools. We've also heard about an important Supreme Court case that involves protecting our children from “gender transition” medical interventions. In order to hold fast to God's good design for marriage, family, and sexuality, it's important to understand some of the underlying problems with how our society views these fundamental realities. Joining us today to talk about this is Dr. Gregg Allison. Dr. Allison is a senior fellow in Marriage and Family for the ERLC Research Institute. He also serves as professor of Christian Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to that, he taught theology and church history at Western Seminary in Oregon. He is an author and has 18 years of ministry experience at Campus Crusade as well as serving as a missionary in Italy and Switzerland. He is a member at his church in Kentucky.
Jason Thompson leads Portland Fellowship, a Christian organization pursuing freedom from “homosexuality and transgender confusion” through Christ. In our terms, Jason's org is “Side X” and we are “Side B”. Jason himself has thought a bit about the various positions in the faith + sexuality debate, and he has his own description of four “sides”. Between these groupings are some seemingly wide gaps in how we, as Christians, think about sexual orientation, restoration, brokenness, and identities… tough stuff, but we are grateful for Jason's willingness to talk about our differences as Christians.About Our Guest: Jason Thompson experienced unwanted same sex desires in his youth, and discovered Portland Fellowship in 1989, where he received discipleship and loving support to find the freedom he was seeking. Jason now serves as executive director of Portland Fellowship; he holds a master's degree in counseling from Western Seminary and is an ordained minister. Jason and his wife Amy live outside of Portland with their two sons.Note: This episode uses the terms “Side A” and “Side B” (and X, Y) as shorthand quite a bit. Bruce and Cindy McMartin tell the story of their life work on two sides of the globe as they worked alongside their students in missions. ABOUT BRUCE & CINDY MCMARTIN: Bruce & Cindy met at Multnomah Bible College and married after graduating in 1975. They have 3 grown children. Bruce earned a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary and a D.Miss from Western Seminary. Bruce & Cindy were accepted as appointees to Haiti with Unevangelized Fields Mission (now Crossworld) and began full-time service in Haiti in 1982. They were both involved in training and developing Haitian leaders, and both taught in the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Port-au-Prince. Both Bruce & Cindy played a role in helping to sensitize the Haitian church and believers to the needs of the lost world and their responsibility to be a part of obeying the Great Commission. A Haitian Mission Organization was birthed, and 3 teams were sent to Senegal (2004, 2005, 2011) and today there are 7 full-time Haitian missionaries serving in Senegal, W. Africa. In 2014, Bruce & Cindy left Haiti and moved to Senegal to serve alongside Haitian missionaries. Senegal is a more unreached country, so the challenges are great. The major religion is Islam, and the Evangelical church is small. Bruce & Cindy have just returned to the USA and are transitioning to making disciples in a new environment. Or maybe [they confuse] God with a type of super-Santa Claus who knows when we're sleeping and when we're awake…But when we turn to Scripture, we find God's presence is relational and real, even gloriously manifest at times. The Bible promises that God will be with his people and that he will not forsake them.~Ryan Lister, Professor at Western SeminarySERMON PASSAGEProverbs 2:6-11, 9:1-18 (NIV)Proverbs 26 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.7 He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 91 Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars.2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city,4 “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says,5 “Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.6 Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight.”7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.11 For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.13 Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing.14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city,15 calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way,16 “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says,17 “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!”18 But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

Dutch Reformer, Institution Founder & Michigan Entrepreneur Albertus Christiaan Van Raalte was born in 1811 in the Netherlands, was a pillar in the Afscheiding, sat under Groen van Prinsterer, was always running from the law, wrote letters to Abraham Kuyper to not over-work (which council Kuyper failed to apply), led the emigrations to Michigan, helped start Hope College and Western Seminary, and loved him so church polity. To talk about Van Raalte we are joined by the living-legend Robert Swierenga, author of “A. C. Van Raalte: Pastor by Vocation, Entrepreneur by Necessity.” A stagnant economy, premodern agriculture, and high population growth had led to a sense of hopelessness. Then Enlightenment rationalism and political discontent cast the Dutch Reformed Church adrift in a sea of doubt and uncertainty. This set the stage for the welcome by Dutch liberals of invading French “liberators” in 1795 and the formation of the Batavian Republic, which disestablished the public church. French dominance increased under Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who established the Kingdom of Holland under his brother Louis in 1804 and made the nation a French vassal state in 1810. The new regime introduced the French Civil Code and modernized an antiquated bureaucracy, bringing with it new taxes and intrusive regulations, such as the first national census, universal military conscription, a civil registry, and other constraints. Young Albertus received the best education the Netherlands could offer in the nineteenth century—parochial day school, Athenaeum, and university. He became an itinerant pastor who planted congregations in the largely rural province of Overijssel. When desperate poverty drove thousands of these Separatists to emigrate to America in the 1840s, Van Raalte himself decided to emigrate and lead his followers to safer pastures. Had he remained in the homeland, as did all but a few of his colleagues, his life would have been comfortable and in familiar surroundings, within his subculture and its routines. Emigrating overseas never entered his mind until midlife, but doing so lifted him to a dynamic role in a period of change in both countries, with different speeds, directions, opportunities, and threats. The two major Dutch Reformed colonies in the 1840s were those of A. C. Van Raalte in Holland, Michigan, and Rev. Hendrik (Henry) P. Scholte in Pella, Iowa. Van Raalte and Scholte, erstwhile friends in the Netherlands, faced a role reversal in America, and they became rivals, competing for settlers and influence. Pella had the early advantage because Scholte had brought almost nine hundred followers, compared to Van Raalte's fewer than one hundred. But Scholte's religious independence and refusal to join the American branch of the Reformed Church, as Van Raalte did, hurt his recruitment efforts. The poverty-stricken Holland colony was isolated and twenty miles from the nearest market towns. But thanks to its harbor, wood products shipped to insatiable Chicago markets paid for provisions and supplies that were brought back on return sailings. Holland's harbor offered easy sailing to Chicago and other Great Lake ports as far away as Buffalo and even New York City via the Erie Canal. Kalamazoo, fifty-five miles southeast, provided a direct rail connection to New York. Pella in south-central Iowa lay fifty miles from Des Moines, the capitol and nearest large city, and it had no railroad service for twenty years. As a result, it remained for generations a small, market town that serviced farms within twenty miles. Holland lay astride the two most productive agricultural counties in Michigan—Ottawa and Allegan. The Holland area today has five or six times the population of the Pella area. And Holland's diverse industrial economy far surpasses that of Iowa's agricultural economy. In the rivalry with Scholte, Van Raalte's accomplishments became the embodiment of what Scholte had hoped to achieve.

As a Calvary Chapel network, CGN is a family of churches working together to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. In this episode and the previous one, we are highlighting some of the training resources that we provide in order to help equip people to carry out that mission. Dr. Andrew Pack is a professor and dean at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. In this discussion, Andrew shares about his journey of church planting, and how that led him to go to seminary. He also answers questions people have asked in regard to studying at Western, and about the benefits (and potential pitfalls) of seminary education. More information about CGN's partnership with Western Seminary can be found at https://cgn.org/western/

Solitude is a place of encounter, where we confront the reality of who we are before God. There are so many voices, including our own false selves, that we use to curate who we are. But in solitude, we encounter our true selves — created and loved by God. And we are free to bring all of our selves before God for healing, prayer, and reflection. In episode 2 of the Solitude season, John Mark Comer and Bryan Rouanzoin interview Bethany Allen. Bethany Allen is the pastor of spiritual formation and leadership development at Bridgetown Church in downtown Portland. She has a deep passion to see women defined by who they were created to be: image-bearers of God. Compelled by her affection for the Scriptures and her desire to be an effective learner in order to be an effective teacher, Bethany works hard counseling women, developing curriculum, and planning alongside Bridgetown's pastoral team. A southern belle by birth, Bethany moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2007. She earned a Master of Arts in Specialized Ministry with a focus in Pastoral Care to Women from Western Seminary in 2011.This podcast accompanies the Solitude Practice, developed by Practicing the Way. Thanks to the generosity of The Circle, all our resources are free. To learn more about The Circle or to run a Practice with your church, community, or small group, visit practicingtheway.org.
