Following her appearance last August, Boston-based musician Jennifer Tefft is back, this time to talk about her new band, Jennifer Tefft & The Strange. Joined by her bandmate “Sharky” we talk about their new album, “Strange Beginnings,” which dropped on May 17.   Jennifer and Sharky share the musical journey that the album takes us on, starting with the recent single releases “Caffeine” and “Going Out.” We go into their upcoming shows, including a performance on WMFO for Live Music Day. Along with his music, Sharky is also a visual artist, and designed the band's merch along with working on the cover art for the recent releases. We also get some hints as to what the future has for Jennifer Tefft & The Strange. Opening this episode is an excerpt from “Caffeine” and closing the show is “Going Out” in its entirety.

I was iniated into dub last century when I picked up the 21st Century Dub compilation cassette. I already loved reggae, but dub was much more expansive, mysterious, and supple. It was psychedelic. And so, over the years, I explored dub. King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry were my guides in this dimension. The more I listened, the more I heard dub's influences everywhere. I heard it in punk, goth, industrial, etc. Dub is singular because it can absorb any genre's musical distinctiveness and make it its own. I'd often don the guide of King Dub during my late-night shows at WMFO. I'd talk in a patois and pitch shift my voice down a notch to sound like a deejay from the deepest realms of dub. And I'd play some of the deepest, low-end frequency dub I could get my hands on. Today's mix captures the spirits of those nights. I hope you enjoy it. Welcome to Soundwave, where we dive deep into the experimental, electronic, and ambient soundscape. Today's episode takes us on a nostalgic journey with a retrospective mix of the groundbreaking Excursions in Ambience compilation series. These albums played a pivotal role in shaping the ambient music genre. From the first volume in 1993 to the final fourth installment in 1996, the Excursions in Ambience series explored the intersection of dance music and ambient sounds, capturing the essence of a musical movement that continues to influence artists today. As a former deejay at WMFO 91.5 FM, these albums were a constant presence in my playlists, providing the perfect soundtrack to my late-night walks home after spinning records at the radio station. We dedicate this week's show to the memory of Michael Kandel, who made several appearances on the Excursions in Ambience series and passed away in 2015.
