Alejandra's Favorite Song! by Alejandra by 826 Valencia
Gurdip & Justin decided for this week's episode to select 10 songs apiece that Elvis was the first artist to record and release commercially and discuss why they're our favorites and what about them showcases Elvis' capabilities as an interpreter and recording artist. Naturally, Gurdip's list skews heavily toward the 1950s and early 1960s with a mix of hits like "Jailhouse Rock" and "I Got Stung" but a few surprises. Justin's list spans the breadth of Elvis' career, from "Heartbreak Hotel" to "It's Easy for You," the last song on Elvis' final album, Moody Blue. We hope you enjoy this breezy, positive and hopefully insightful episode as we're rolling up on the start of summer in the northern hemisphere. The whole episode is a big gush-fest about our love of Elvis' music! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.
Calling all Swifties who are also Noah Kahan fans, or who are Noah-curious! Today Sara is joined by her friend Stef (again) to dive into Noah's newest album, “The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs” while Laura is still on maternity leave. They reacted to the whole album for YouTube (linked below), and loved it so much they knew they had to come on here and break it down. Laura even shares her two cents in a few places via some voice memos, which is really fun. They begin by talking about how Noah's songwriting is similar to Taylor's before diving more deeply into the album with specific tracks, and then ending with favorite songs, lyrics and ratings, etc.A couple notes: we goofed and didn't realize that evermore was INDEED nominated for Album of the Year in 2022. Our bad! Also, we forgot to play Laura's voice memo about her top 3 songs from the album, so her 3 favorites are: End of August, Orbiter and Willing and Able.We hope you enjoy this one, and please let us know if you'd like us to do more of this kind of episode in the future.Chapters(00:00) Intro(1:35) Taylor Updates(11:37) Our backgrounds with Noah(18:18) Noah's similarities to Taylor(34:22) Introducing “The Great Divide” - overall thoughts and themes(50:46) End of August(56:51) Doors(1:03:56) American Cars(1:09:21) Downfall(1:14:23) Paid Time Off(1:17:43) Staying Still(1:20:23) Haircut(1:22:56) Willing and Able(1:27:14) Dashboard(1:28:30) 23(1:32:01) All Them Horses + A Few Of Your Own(1:33:58) Orbiter(1:39:21) Dan(1:45:20) Top 3 Favorite Songs(1:46:54) Skips(1:51:07) Best Bridge(1:59:58) Song for Taylor to be featured on(2:07:18) Favorite Lyrics(2:10:33) Rating the album(2:16:05) Signing off / outroSUPPORT US ON PATREON! In 1975, the musical landscape changed forever when four Swedes released an eponymous album that would ignite a global phenomenon. In this episode of Derringer Discoveries, Paul, Alton, and Rob welcome a very special guest from Australia: accomplished musician, journalist, and author Joe Matera. While Laura is away for this episode, Joe stops by to discuss his 2026 book, The Making of ABBA: The Story Behind The Band's Breakthrough 1975 Album, and shares his unique perspective as someone who has not only studied the band's history but has also performed and recorded with members of ABBA's own backing band. INSIDE THE EPISODE The Australian Connection: Discover how world-class ABBA historian, Joe Matera, went from a dedicated listener in Australia to an "Honorary Derringer." A Record-Breaking Era: We discuss the 1975 album that hit #1 in Australia, Norway, and Sweden, marking the first time any artist released seven singles from a single record. Beyond the Vocals: While Agnetha and Frida are the voices, Joe highlights the "melodic architecture" provided by the session musicians he has worked with personally. The Korgis and "Marty Supreme": Joe talks about his time with the British band The Korgis and the recent resurgence of their hit "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" in the 2025 film Marty Supreme. Spotify Giants: We look at ABBA's enduring legacy as they currently sit at #125 in the world on Spotify more than 50 years after their debut. THE MYSTERY TOP 5: WHICH TRACKS MADE THE CUT? You know the hits, but do you know the stories behind them? Joe Matera joins the team to countdown his Top 5 Favorite Songs from the 1975 ABBA album. We aren't spoiling the list here, but listeners can look forward to: An instrumental track that Joe considers a personal favorite despite it never being released as a single. A high-energy song that found its greatest chart success in Austria. The "Big Three" hits that all reached #1 in Australia, including one track that conquered six separate charts in the United States. Expert commentary on which songs feature the unmistakable guitar work of Janne Schaffer. Tune in to the episode to find out which legendary anthem Joe crowned as his #1 pick! ABOUT JOE MATERA Joe Matera is an accomplished Australian guitarist, rock journalist, and author. "I am a F.B.I. Agent!" This week, we're paddling out into the 50-year storm to revisit the 1991 adrenaline-fueled masterpiece, Point Break. It's a film that shouldn't work on paper—a Zen-philosophical surfing heist movie—yet it somehow redefined the action genre. From the high-stakes "Ex-Presidents" bank robberies to Gary Busey's unhinged energy, we're breaking down why this Kathryn Bigelow classic remains the ultimate high-octane trip through early 90s cinema. The Movie Hound joins Dave and Rob to dive into the wild casting rumors, the "less than nothing" philosophy of the script, and the legendary stunts that made this a cult favorite. We explore the bromance between Johnny Utah and Bodhi and discuss how a movie this absurd managed to become a genuine masterpiece. Andy McNamara is joined by Kev, Luke, Caleb, and Devin of the Wisconsin-based band Offend Your Friends. After two decades, the band is celebrating a major milestone with the release of a full-length album, aptly titled Almost Didn't Make It. In this deep dive, the members share the fascinating story of their 20-year journey, from their early days as a skateboard crew in Fond du Lac to their latest recording sessions in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this interview, we discuss:- The Band's Origins: How a neighborhood skateboard crew and a "party band" with a pink Mohawk evolved into Offend Your Friends.- The "Stock Wars": The legendary story of being blacklisted from their high school's "Goodstock" festival and starting their own massive counter-event, "Badstock," which drew over 500 people.- The Lost Album: The heartbreaking (and slightly hilarious) story of how their recorded tracks were stolen from a driveway in Milwaukee, leading to a "year-long depression" before they eventually re-recorded everything.- New Music & Sound: Transitioning from their early ska influences to a heavier, high-energy sound filled with gang vocals and "Fake Work Friday" anthems.- Friendship & Brotherhood: Why the band never truly broke up, despite multiple "air quote" breakups and members moving across the country.Support the Band:Website: offendyourfriends.comBandcamp: offendyourfriends.bandcamp.com0:00 Introduction – Fox Cities Core Radio0:27 Welcoming Offend Your Friends to the Studio1:08 How Does It Feel to Finally Release an Album?1:45 Band Origin Story – Fond du Lac, Wisconsin2:21 How the Members All Met3:19 The Party Van & Luke's Iconic First Impression4:11 How Wes Accidentally Became the Drummer5:07 Caleb Joins & the Saxophone Decision5:29 The Fond du Lac Scene in the Early 2000s6:41 Renting Banquet Halls & Building a Local Scene7:33 What Got Kevin Into Music8:40 Kevin's Singing Origins9:16 The Loot – Their Short-Lived Hip Hop Project9:50 Adding the Saxophone & Finding Their Sound10:57 Early Recordings & First EPs11:02 The "Indecisive" EP Era26:23 Recording "Almost Didn't Make It" – The Vision27:03 Gang Vocals & Recording the Album Twice27:35 Kevin Records Vocals in Oakland During Covid28:28 The Stolen Laptop Disaster29:14 Year-Long Depression & Regrouping29:57 Re-Recording Vocals in Tulsa at Gene Pump Studios30:37 Two New Songs Written After the Laptop Was Stolen31:22 Adding "Olive Branch" as the 12th Song31:50 Total Recording Timeline – How Many Years?32:21 Why They Tracked Drums Last33:04 Mixing with Colton Jin33:50 Mastering with Justin Perkins35:17 Any Regrets? Episode 134 – The Metal Maniacs Podcast w/ Jay Ingersoll & Modd This week, we sit down with one of the most unique, prolific, and genuinely unstoppable forces in underground metal: Justin Lawnchair, the mastermind behind The Biscuit Merchant — Ann Arbor's proggy, death-tinged, genre-melting metal project. With 26 full albums (each 45–55 minutes) in the works, recorded entirely by Justin, and no generative AI used at any stage, this project is a testament to pure determination, creativity, and DIY musicianship. The Biscuit Merchant is all about “melting pot metal,” a blend of death metal, thrash, prog, folk, power metal, blues, groove, and whatever else Justin feels like throwing into the cauldron. Nothing is off the table. Nothing is predictable. And that's what makes it magic. We deep dive into the vision, the process, and the absolute madness of building a 26-album alphabetical saga known as Alpha — a project planned since 2009 and still evolving with every riff, rhythm, and solo.

Hey Regular Guys & Gals, Kev's flying solo for a Lonely Guy Friday edition of RGF. This week, he unpacks how the songs that move you are actually your subconscious trying to speak. He breaks down how Steve Harley's “Make Me Smile” teaches grace over bitterness, Bowie's “Conversation Piece” turns loneliness into connection, and Morrissey's “Cemetery Gates” helps bury old identities so you can finally walk free. PLUS, how the end of a cycle (and a Supermoon) can spark your next act, why cleaning out a closet can clear your soul, and how laughing right after you cry might be your brain's ultimate reset.Kev shares Maria's quiet wisdom that can rewire your outlook and how Priyanka Chopra's dad's advice may be the secret to peace… How the news may tell you the world's ending, but Walmart crowds and wrestling crowds prove otherwise. And how captain Lou Albano reminds us that he is well and never sick! Bye Betches.
