Two comedy nerds, Jacques and Joe, talk movies, TV, video games, sports (the Patriots) and politics... with laughter and love. Not so much the love.
The Carnival Personnel podcast is a unique and entertaining show that offers a refreshing blend of humor, political commentary, and random discussions. Hosted by Jacques and Joe, this podcast has gained a loyal following thanks to its engaging topics, witty banter, and the dynamic chemistry between the hosts.
One of the best aspects of The Carnival Personnel podcast is its ability to cover a wide range of subjects. From parenting tips to video game segments, Jacques and Joe keep their content diverse and unpredictable. This variety ensures that listeners are always in for a treat and never know what topic they'll delve into next. Additionally, the podcast's political segments provide insightful commentary on current events, making it a great resource for staying informed.
Another highlight of The Carnival Personnel podcast is the strong local flair that Jacques and Joe bring to each episode. While their personalities may be different, their chemistry is reminiscent of iconic duos like Wayne's World. Their goofiness and humor create an atmosphere that feels like hanging out with friends over drinks. These relatable qualities make for an enjoyable listening experience.
However, one potential downside of The Carnival Personnel podcast is that it may not be for everyone. Some listeners might find the random nature of the show overwhelming or prefer more structured content. Additionally, while political commentary can be informative and engaging, it may not resonate with those who are looking for purely comedic entertainment.
In conclusion, The Carnival Personnel podcast is a hidden gem in the world of podcasts. It offers a unique blend of humor, political discourse, and random discussions that cater to varied interests. Jacques and Joe's chemistry and relatability make this show worth tuning in to for anyone seeking an entertaining yet informative listen. So sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in The Carnival Personnel experience – you won't be disappointed!
Just kidding, it's not spectacular in the least. Enjoy another regular old episode of Jacques, Joe and Biff talking about standup comedy, NHL hockey and TV watching. Oh, and Jacques does a very good deed for someone on the end of the country... the better end, some might say. Not to be confused with the "bitter end", to which is what we encourage you to listen to this whole episode. And, you're welcome, no opening or closing music. Joe took over the "editing" for this one, and he don't got a lotta time for caring about production. No, sir, he has to devote what little free time he has to spending time with his friends (old game show episodes) and family (comments section on retro video game YouTube videos).
Joe and Jacques (and shockingly, more Joe then Jacques) talk the new movie based on the infamous 1984 episode of Press Your Luck where an Ice Cream truck driver from Ohio won over 100k in one day. Was he cheating? Was it an inside job? Was it dumb luck? Is this guy who he says he is? We had fun talking what the movie got right and what (admittedly) they took “artistic licensing with”. 40 years in the making and the movie and stars Paul Walter Hauser and Walton Goggins do not disappoint. More info then ANYONE wants as Jacques breaks his HIPPA rights to over share his medical voyage. Jacques stand up update includes looking forward to going to the prom ... yes, he is set to tell his little stories this week at an actual high-school prom … but this week's highlight was going to Nicks and seeing The Price Is Right Host talk watching folks be more then excited just to be in the building … to being PISSED there is no car in the showcase showdown. Jeremy Shipp is a writer (no, like really a writer … like people pay him to write stuff after lawyers and agents and studios agree that HE is a guy you want to pay to write for you …) he's also one of our favorite social media content creators who has a passion for films and Hollywood that is infectious. Jeremy loves talking movies and writing so much … he talked to us! Well … Jacques did most of the talking but Jeremy, when he did get to talk, truly is one of the best guest we've ever had (or ever will!) Currently writing on an animated pre-school shows, he's also written and directed a few award-winning horror shorts. Jeremy is by all accounts a good dad who if he goes to cool places like a theme park to shoot content, he'll bring his kids! Jacques, Biff and Joe talk about the passing of Pope Francis, the latest political shenangeans of a certain dictatorial administration, and the NHL playoffs. Jacques also saw several Boston comedy legends perform during "Comedians in Their Shorts," a screening of several comics' short films at a Boston-area theater. And, um.... honestly, you can skip this episode. This was more of a wellness check than a podcast worth publishing. Yes, this is Joe writing the show notes this week. Jacques had too much to do and Biff knows better than to waste his time on this nonsense. But please check out next week's CPP Sideshow with filmmaker and TV writer Jeremy Shipp! 11 plus years as a District Attorney … turned headlining comedian … author … musician … actor …. painter … to say Paul D'Angelo is a well-rounded Renaissance Man, is a vast understatement. First things first … Yes, Paul has Dick Doherty stories (sadly, no Dick Bucks) but he has stories about the drive-in theater his family owned in Medford, moving to LA in mid 90s, his recent art show, the books he's written (which along with comedy specials & CDs, are all available on his site): PDangelo.com (Paul has some great content on his YouTube channel) Also … chatted the cross over between being in front of a jury and a chatty audience member at a comedy show. Like hearing a mediocre comic talk about his last week of mediocre sets at shows around New England … then this podcast is for you. Jacques tells Joe that YET AGAIN, the highlight to his last couple weeks in stand-up was seeing a Masters Class in Comedy play out in front of him as hero to all comics, Steve Bjork gave a tiny crowd the best show they will ever see. Truly, every show with Steve is a How To class in some aspect of stand-up. Chat friend of Pod, Mr. Steve Cole Jr., a life long Lexington Minuteman reenactor being promoted to this year being THE famed Capt. John Parker from the Battle Of Lexington and Concord … and Steve's take-over of the local news station in hilarious fashion. Did Joe and Jacques (and Wayne) hang out with Emo after having been introduced to him as a fellow comic and him treat us all like fellow comics … YES. Was it the greatest nights of our lives, including over that of the birth of our sons … No Comment. Did Emo more than live up to the hype? Yes. Is he one of the kindest sweetest people we've ever met? Yes. If that wasn't enough for one episode (and maybe it should have been) – we chat HANDS OFF Rallies across the country this past weekend (and Jacques and Management were part of march in rainy cold Boston) – amazing day. Sid's comedy is smart, political, thought provoking and brutally honest. Sid also … was on a legal team that beat Grifter & Chief Frump at The Supreme Court. Yes, he is that good at both. Joe and Jacques we're so blown away the first time they saw Tim Champa. It was at Nick's Comedy Stop June 2023 (with their friend All Star Tommy from LA with his wife and daughter) – we talk getting Jacques 12 year old into Nick's that night and seeing Tim dig out of a massive hole dug by the two … less than stellar comics before him. Tim's approach to comedy – the writing … the re-writing … the re-re-re-writing- the finding ways to be great in every room – have him well on his way to being the new regular headlining comic in the New England region but those who know his work, won't be surprised to see him as a national headliner soon. Smart, relatable comedy with just the right amount of sharp turns and “what, did he just say what I think he said” moments that really makes his comedy stand out. About six months back Jacques saw this 15-year-old doing Dave Rattigan's Winner Circle Mic. One of the best weekly mics in New England, stacked with headliners working out new stuff as well … as a 15-year-old comic? That kid is Ethan Printz and his unpaid Uber driver to the show, his Dad, Robbie. Robbie for 30 plus years, one of the best headliners (and most liked by the comedy community) to come out of the famed late 80s/early90s Boston scene. This was a super fun chat with a couple super fun comics. Lots of kids go into the family business – Ethan is just starting early into the family business. Why not. He's good at it and a bad night of telling jokes with your day and your friends (fellow comics) beats the best day of grinding away in a cubicle doing TPS reports. If you're having a mental health crisis as you're trying to get to a Back Street Boys concert, comedian Emily Ruskowski is the hero you're looking for. Special RE-Posting with our good friend BILL FAY. In this episode from Dec 17 2023 - We talk Bills new Happy Texas play ... where Jacques spend a few days in NYC couple week back hanging with Bill as he prepped for the Investors showcase with full cast and music - figure this be a fun time to repost this one. Enjoy ... again. Legendary Film Maker and … Co-Founder of Legendary Pictures, Bill Fay zooms in to chat with Joe, Biff and Jacques … who for reasons we still don't understand has been a close friend and mentor to Jacques for 20 years! The first two film companies Bill worked for out of college went bankrupt … and then he learned to fly a plane to be Hollywood's man on the ground in Africa ... along the way working with folks like James Cameron for (politely putting it) eccentric film maker Rodger Corman to producing such block busters The Patriot and Independence Day with Director Roland Emmerich. Along the way ACCIDENTLY doubling his 24-year-old selves lives saving by making a 3-day investment based on getting to see a sneak preview of Back To The Future Bill (and partner Thomas Toll) created Legendary Pictures in 2000 with a plan for a slate of big budget (largely Superhero / Action) films … Along the way just for giggles … also produced the Hangover (well for giggles and 470m at Box office making it largest grossing rated R comedy in history.) Bill also talks his favorite project, a small indy sci fi horror called Replicate … well favorite project Jacques was an associate producer on. Bill did fly to see Jacques she he was living in Qatar in 2026 … and in Qatar gave college lectures and gave road map to finance minister of how too get their country on the film making map. Bill currently is CEO of Steric Systems – a company that has developed a electronic process of smoothing liquor and spirits at distilleries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a45uEuVH6jI Steric Systems has grown exponentially over last few years … which leaves very little time for the other new company Bill started with his brother … a Salmon spread they've made for friends and family for years … at a few pound batches at a time … now scaling up (pun intended) to 7500 lbs test with a national food chain retailer. Bill and Jacques now have the stage show rights to the 1999 movie Happy Texas and hope to have a 6 weeks test run (maybe in Seattle) next fall. Then on Saturday, they paid a (for Joe, third) visit to the Shea Family "Back to the Future" Museum in Hubbardston, Mass, and capped the day off with a special 35th anniversary screening of "Back to the Future Part II"! Plus, Jacques not-so-humble brags about meeting two-time Stanley Cup winner and Boston Bruins legend Derek Sanderson at a recording of Mark Riley's Chirping Zebras hockey podcast! Listen here: https://chirpingzebras.com/?post_type=podcast&p=2020 Also more NHL talk, assorted yuks, and a whole lotta yums! Jacques whose home screams Halloween year round … got a late start getting up the 12 ft skeletons and inflatables … but spend weekend making up for lost time (much to the neighbors chagrin. The three of us do a much deeper dive into the Oreo Coke Zero and Coke Zero Oreo's then anyone should. The horrific flooding in parts of the country (followed by the horrific politicalizing the response) is treated different in Japan where, sadly, also parts of that country are experiencing the same flooding's … but they do recognize the climate change having played hand in these disasters. YES – Chris aka CPF Production aka Wicket Funny is in year 3 over at The China Blossom and we chat that a good deal … but FIRST … we chat some award-winning Grampa's Homestyle Chili! THIS room at China Blossom has been one of the more well-known rooms in New England comedy for most of the last 40 years. This is Chris' 2nd stint at running the comedy room and every weekend between Labor Day and Memorial Day, you'll see the BEST comics killing it in front of a packed room! Most clubs and bookers talk that “they're like a family” with the New England's best known folks in comedy … well Chris had nearly 50 of them fly over too Italy for his wedding a couple years ago. When it comes to the “names” of New England comedy, Chris is arguably the most well liked (loved by many) comedy show producers but how supportive he is to the comics just starting out … he's really the most liked guy over all by this insane and funny club. Jacques has been going too China Blossom to see shows since high school and over the last couple years, maybe seen 25 shows here –but Oct 18th for the Wicket Funny “Funniest Person In Merrimac Valley” contest finals and the Oct 20thshow case – Jacques is counting down the days like a 7 year old does Christmas! Matt Misci – aka – Mr. Pinky Ring Comedy – aka The Bald Barber is our guest this week. We JUST met Matt for first face to face last week where he was one of the hosts (and a judge … I think) at CPF Productions (Wicket Funny / Chris Flahive) comedy contest … In which Jacques, Wayne Russel and somehow Anthony Eugenio from Open Mic Pain Podcast, have all advanced to the finals Oct 18, 2024) And YES, Matt was wearing (his dad's) Pinky Ring when we met him and boy did he live up to the hype we had heard about him. A comic. A host / MC. And a booker. He might have gotten a late start into comedy but you'd sure think he's one of those 40-year vets we chat about most episodes. A barber IS a lot like a (hopefully) sober bartender. You really get to know your clients and about a year into sobriety Matt went to his first mic and knew this was for him. Yes, he does test out material on friends in his chair … they can't get up and he's holding scissors … can't ask for a more attentive audience! Matt chats the overwhelming special support he has gotten from day one from all areas of the hierarchy of New England comedy. Be it working material out with him, giving him shows he didn't expect to be getting for a while … even picking him up in the rain when he had car trouble on his way to a show. Now, yes, Jacques did (very unsuccessfully) tried to start a beef with Matt and Mike Koutrobis … but Matt wouldn't bite … so Jacques just gonna have to try harder next time to make stuff up! According to some folks at this past Friday night at China Blossom Restaurant in N. Andover MA, where the comedy room Wicket Funny is, Jacques doesn't totally stink at stand up … nor does their pal Wayne Russell, who both moved to finals of 2ndannual Funniest Person In Merrimac Valley contest. Jacques learns what a “mom said no” item in a store is, we chat Vegas odds of Oasis tour actually happening, The Jane's Addiction dust up on stage in Boston this weekend … and someone running for public office who hates the non-child having cat lady, Taylor Swift (who we … think is a national treasure and a great person.) Joe gives a big thumbs up to “Legends Of Beavis”, Biff gives interesting breakdown of “Ghost Stories” from Japan and Jacques' kid has him watching JuJutsu Kaisen. Jacques and son went to pretty amazing Weezer 30th anniversary of Blue Album show (Dinosaur Jr was great, Flaming Lips sucked). Come see the great Tony V. THIS Friday Sept 13th at The China Blossom in N. Andover MA, where he'll be hosting and headlining night one of CFP's Wicket Funny's 2nd annual “Funniest Person In Merrimac Valley” contest – Jacques (and former CPP guests Wayne Russell from Open Mic Pain Podcast and Lauren Simms) will all be participants in. A lot of great stuff has happened with Tony since being on our podcast in March. Now, we're not saying ALL of it is a result of being on our podcast but we're not, NOT saying that either. Hey, the “CPP Bump” as it's known industry wide, has really helped a lot of careers … according to our own research (which is proprietary and we won't be sharing with the class.) Sure, it could be part strategic self-serving scheduling on our part back in March. It COULD be part coincidence. And sure, an argument could be made that these things have come about due to a life time of hard work by Tony and him being one of the best comics to ever come out of the greatest city for stand-up comedy ever. BUT his “Life Time Achievement” award from Jim McCue & The Boston Comedy Festival this year DID happen after being on our podcast. His ridiculously funny Comedy Dynamics special, “Wait Till You Hear This” did come out on Apple TV, Amazon Prime (and dozens of other places) AFTER he was on CPP. Tony was also prominently featured on the very cool John Tobin Productions launch video for their “Lil Chucks” comedy club and also, when Jacques was in LA a few weeks ago, Tony did get to co-host with the very talented Gus Vireiros at The Yard Theater in Hollywood an amazing show with Bobcat Goldthwait, again all this happened AFTER having been on CPP ... and now, this Friday's Wicket Funny CFP hosting headlining gig … come on. Hope you can get a ticket for what will be a sold-out show on Friday. Jacques is (sadly) back in Lowell after a couple super fun (and productive) weeks in Los Angeles – where Biff hosted his yearly (amazing) yearly JFT Hockey team party – as always Biff goes above and way beyond with the food and hospitality and NOT leaving the party to go have his finger sewn backed up after nearly slicing it off in food prep. Joe himself had a pretty great trip since last chat ... his was to New York City (New York City … inside joke .. if you know you know.) Where Joe and his much better half saw not one, not two but THREE Broadway plays … including Back To The Future. This is a very special episode of Carnival Personnel, but don't worry: you won't learn an important life lesson, or fight drug pushers by just saying "no," or even fend off your handsy neighborhood bicycle shop owner. This episode celebrates the 30th anniversary of FORMAL EDITION! What the heck is that, you ask? Why, it was only the premier source of public access television sketch comedy from Lexington, Mass. in the years 1994 and 1995 -- THAT'S ALL! Join Jacques and Joe with their guests and former Formal co-hosts Steve and Jim as they honor... well, themselves! They take a fond and hilarious look back at all of the comedy gold they mined in that little TV studio some 30 years ago. Listen to them laugh at VHS recordings of their own material like four middle-aged cis white male Norma Desmonds. You'll laugh, too--whether it's at them or with them, it all feels the same: FUNNY! Remember the '90s and enjoy!
Jacques is in LA for two weeks mostly doing (what he calls” comedy. His goal is 30 open mics in 15 days and come home with 7 new(ish) minutes of yuks. His travels on Wednesday took him to a barber shop in Inglewood CA … could have been Tom Hanks on SNL Black Jeopardy but ended up … getting invited back! Joe chats his goldmine of TV show box sets (LOTS of 70s, 80s some 90s) he's acquired and the joyful painstaking process of putting it all onto his Plex. A true investment in our happiness. Biff between bleeding for the cause … the cause in this case … the annual – FNH / John Taylor Fertilizer Hockey Franchise LLC's yearly party at his house. As always, the food and hospitality was beyond expectation … and YES, he bleed for the cause nearly cutting part of his finger off in food prep … should he have gone to ER … who knows but he hockey player-ed it thru and the rest of us, can't say thanks enough. Comedian, Actress and soon to be Author, the delightful Doris Ballard is out guest this week. A life-long love of theater has had Doris on stage for years. Always active in local politics and local television – Doris' standing in the Concord NH community really was a road block to pursuing the type of comedy she's meant to tell … and it's NOT for the pearl clutching faint of heart! This rapping grandma exemplifies the “don't judge a book by it's cover” when you see the host hand her the mic on stage. Nothing is off limits and no one is safe … ESPECIALLY that absolutely delightful Norm Ballard … Doris husband, uber driver, sounding board and her personal piñata (as Norm really sometimes takes a beating!) Look up the term “good sport” and there you'll find a picture of Norm. Jacques has been lucky enough to be on line ups all over New England (Maine at Jim McCue shows at Smitty's Cinema's – In New Hampshire at Dave Rattigan's shows At Murphy's Tap Room and in Lowell MA at Greg Boggis Mondo Comedy Luna Theater Shows) don't worry Vermont, you're on our list! Working comedian Liam Hales was our super fun guest this week. Liam can be seen somewhere in New England every weekend hosting or featuring. Most Saturday's Liam is at McCue's Comedy Club in Portsmouth – Also a regular at Smitty's Cinema's (in Maine & NH) as well as City Winery in Boston to name a few places. He is also an integral part of the Boston Comedy Festival production team. After time in a college improv troop, Liam spend a few years in Los Angeles working the comedy scene (where he cross paths with our great friend of ours Sally Mullin's - Sleazy Does It On Amazon Prime) Liam's material is very open, personal and relatable. He's liked by and he cracks up all the big name comics (like Tony V) he works with and also goes out of his way to help the new comics (like Jacques) get stage time (as a comic and a host0 and is always so encouraging and supportive. Between his kindness and being 6-6 and build like a lot 70s Buick station wagon, Liam exemplifies the term gentle giant … but I still wouldn't want to heckle him. Also, a big thank you to Liam for letting us use clips from his awesome comedy album: Please Forgive Me (available on Apple Music and other places … and there are some fun clips on YouTube as well). 83-Year-Old-Jewish-Vaudevillian trapped inside a 24-year-old's body, Joseph Katz is our guest this week. A finalist in the 2024 Boston Comedy Festival – Joseph Katz chats with OUR Joe and Jacques about their mutual love for the Dick Van Dyke Show, Jack Benny and pre-Carson Tonight Show (Note: we all also LOVE Carson's Tonight Show.) Katz had a cable access (Daily Show) type program in high school, followed by his college radio comedy talk show at WMUL at UMass Lowell (about 3 miles from Jacques' shack) – Comedy IS his life! And his life is pretty good! Katz falls somewhere between the great Emo Phillips and the Boston Legend Steven Wright. An “absurdist” style of very smart humor with hard to see coming, sharp right turns. The youngest comic on the finals stage at BCF this year and he's only going to get more seasoned.
