Medical science is advancing at an astonishing rate. Today we talk with leading expert Eric Topol about two aspects of this story. First, the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, especially in diagnostics. This is an area that is a perfect match between an important question and the capabilities of machine learning, to the point where AI can out-perform human doctors. And second, our understanding of aging and what to do about it. Eric even gives some actionable advice on how to live more healthily into our golden years.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/05/05/episode-313-eric-topol-on-the-changing-face-of-medicine-and-aging/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Eric Topol received and M.D. from the University of Rochester. Remember when Nashville's Music Row was lined with old houses turned publishing companies and studios? When writers walked songs across the street to publishers and artists mingled at the 16th Avenue Café? Those days are fading into memory, replaced by high-rises and corporate offices that barely resemble the creative community that built country music. In this nostalgic yet forward-looking conversation, the guys reflect on Music Row's transformation and what it means for the future of songwriting. Neil shares the surprising story of his spontaneous wedding at the Music Row Wedding Chapel ("We tracked five songs, did vocals and harmonies, and then decided to get married"), while the others reminisce about Nashville landmarks that have disappeared with time. The discussion moves beyond physical changes to the deeper shifts in how music is created and consumed today. When streaming pays fractions of pennies split between multiple songwriters, creating "forever songs" becomes economically challenging. As Kurt explains, "It's hard for songwriters to get excited anymore. I don't get excited if I see somebody putting out a song on social media because you don't make any money." Despite touting millions of streams, many artists struggle to sell concert tickets, revealing the disconnect between digital numbers and real-world impact.Yet through their frustrations, these veteran songwriters demonstrate why they've survived in the business: genuine passion for the craft. Even without financial incentive, the validation of sharing a great song idea with respected collaborators provides enough fuel to keep creating. They propose that giving songwriters a percentage of master recordings might help preserve the quality songwriting that built Nashville's reputation.Whether you're a songwriter, music industry professional, or simply a country music fan, this episode offers valuable insights into the evolution of Music City. In a world that seems filled with chaos at the moment, a world where it seems power and money walk hand in hand, is there a space for morality? For ethical choices to be made and conversations be had? Or are we witnessing a moral decline? How can competing moralities co-exist peacefully in increasingly diverse, and politically entrenched, societies? Audrey Carville is joined by Queen's University's Dr Suzanne Whitten, a philosopher, and John Barry, professor of green political economy, and Presbyterian minister Rev Dr Norman Hamilton.

Classic American cars evoke powerful nostalgia, and during this episode, we dive deep into the iconic models of yesteryear – from the star-studded headliners of the Pontiac Star Chief to the chrome-laden beauty of the Buick Wildcat. These automotive masterpieces featured intricate details that modern vehicles simply can't match, with headlight bezels alone containing upwards of 14 perfectly fitted chrome parts. The conversation shifts to modern vehicle technology with a spirited debate about auto start-stop systems. While environmentally beneficial, these fuel-saving features can create dangerous situations in Houston traffic when quick acceleration is needed. We share real-world experiences with various implementations of this technology, highlighting why some drivers immediately disable it when entering their vehicles. The highlight of the show is our comprehensive review of the 2025 Lexus UX300H hybrid SUV. This compact luxury vehicle impressed with its outstanding fuel economy (45mpg city/41mpg highway), comfortable ride despite its short wheelbase, and premium interior materials. Perhaps most surprising is its competitive pricing, starting at just $36,540 – thousands less than European rivals like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.We also examine fascinating vehicle theft statistics showing the largest annual decline in four decades, largely thanks to improved anti-theft measures from manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia. These companies have effectively addressed security vulnerabilities that once made them prime targets for thieves and social media trends like the "Kia Boys."Join us every Saturday morning for the live In Wheel Time Car Show on Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and inwheeltimecom, or catch our podcasts on all major streaming platforms. Road Trip After Hours w/ WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long and Host Mac Davis
WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long and host Mac Davis dive into the jaw-dropping economics of modern wrestling fandom, where WrestleMania week experiences now include $8,500 Hall of Fame packages and $25,000 lunches with John Cena. Though staggering, Teddy acknowledges "there's going to be somebody who's going to pay this," reflecting wrestling's transformation into premium entertainment. The conversation takes a serious turn examining the limits of on-screen violence after Jon Moxley was impaled by nails during a recent AEW match. Teddy expresses concern about extreme content on accessible television channels, noting "we have to be careful" with violence that might influence young viewers: "Let's don't add fuel to the fire."Pulling back the curtain on WWE's corporate culture, Teddy recounts his unforgettable "come-to-Jesus meeting" with Vince McMahon after ad-libbing during a Randy Orton introduction. When Vince asked, "You in business with yourself out there?" Teddy learned a permanent lesson about McMahon's no-nonsense approach to his billion-dollar operation. These stories paint a vivid picture of an intimidating workplace where many were "terrified" to approach the boss. From his days as Ric Flair's chauffeur to an outrageous story involving Randy Savage and an unfortunate drug dealer, Teddy's unfiltered tales provide rare glimpses into wrestling's colorful past. The episode closes with discussion of wrestling's greatest managers and why the tag team Doom deserves WWE Hall of Fame recognition.Join Teddy Long and Mac Davis at SICW Fan Fest 3 in St. Louis on May 16-17th. We all know what it is, but do you know money comes from or who invented it? And was it always green? Money is a currency we use to exchange value for goods or services in our modern-day society. For most of us, it's a number written in our bank apps. But it wasn't always like that, of course. Before we created money and gave it a standard value, we used to barter. "We're all vulnerable. And I hadn't thought about that previously. I thought, oh, it's only a small group of people who might fall for this. What I've learned is actually [that] these scammers are so sophisticated. They have so much money. Based on my reporting, this industry, you know, is maybe more lucrative than the illicit drug trade, and these criminal syndicates might be making over 500 billion US dollars a year. So that means they have access to the latest technology, whether it's voice cloning or face changing software. They can buy the latest in AI tools. they can stay several steps ahead of most law enforcement organizations in most places in the world, and, you know, re-invest in their businesses, because that's how they view what they're doing. They just see this as a business line, and they want to make a profit. That's why we called the podcast Scam Inc, because I think the way to understand what we're seeing is that this is an industry and everyone's driven by profits. So the fact that the criminals have so much money makes it really difficult for governments, police or international organizations or banks or crypto exchanges or social media companies to tackle this huge and growing problem." - Sue-Lin Wong Fresh out of the studio, Sue-Lin Wong, Southeast Asia Correspondent for The Economist, joins us to uncover the dark world of online scams and how they've evolved into a $500 billion global crime industry. She shares her investigative journey behind Scam Inc., her latest podcast series, revealing how cybercriminal syndicates operate like multinational corporations—leveraging AI, crypto, and human trafficking to fuel their scams. Sue-Lin explains why Southeast Asia has become a hub for these illicit operations, the psychological manipulation that makes anyone vulnerable, and the deep-rooted connections between scamming, money laundering, and political corruption. We discuss the Kansas bank collapse, the rise of pig butchering scams, and how law enforcement struggles to keep up with decentralized criminal networks. Closing the conversation, Sue-Lin highlights what individuals, governments, and financial institutions must do to fight back against the next wave of AI-powered fraud. "Our traffic jams are herds of ducks and families of water buffaloes." - Faryl HoangTalking with Faryl about her journey, her experiences as a Vietnamese-American rediscovering her roots, and what it's really like to live in a place as magical as Hoi An was fascinating. Her perspective offered a really balanced view—yes, it's paradise, but it also has its challenges. That's something I always try to emphasize when we romanticize a place. Hoi An isn't just lanterns and slow riverboat rides; it's also a living, breathing community that's evolving in real time. One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation was how we, as expats, often view progress differently from locals. The discussion about KFC and Starbucks coming to Hoi An was a perfect example. While foreigners might resist these changes, the local community celebrates them. It's a reminder that we're guests in these places, and our nostalgia for an "untouched" Vietnam doesn't necessarily align with what people living there actually want. Also, I just loved the moment when Faryl's dog started barking because a family of buffalo was walking by her house! That's the kind of real-life, unfiltered Vietnam I love capturing on this podcast. It was a great episode that blended travel, history, and a bit of cultural reality check all in one.- Niall MackayKey Takeaways:- The Reality of Living in Hoi An – Hoi An is stunning but lacks Western conveniences. No shopping malls, no major grocery stores—life here requires a slower pace.- The Changing Face of Vietnam – The arrival of big chains like KFC and Starbucks sparked debates among expats, but locals were thrilled. It's a sign of progress and accessibility, not just commercialization.- The Complexity of the Vietnamese Language – Even for someone with Vietnamese heritage like Faryl, learning the language is incredibly challenging due to regional dialects and pronunciation differences.- Hidden Gems Near Hoi An – Bac Ma National Park between Da Nang and Hue is an under-the-radar spot for hiking, wildlife conservation, and stunning landscapes.- Hoi An's Nightlife is Underrated – From backpacker chaos at Tiger Tiger to r"Send me a message!"Support the show

Today's show is the first in a mini-series on the changing landscape of retail. We've been hearing about the death of retail for more than five years now. There is no question that retail is changing. Perhaps the biggest effect is the blurry line between online and offline. It used to be the case that customers would drive to their favourite shop and see what they had in stock. Customers would browse the aisles and make their buying decision based on what was in the store. That was rarely a perfect shopping experience and most customers would walk out empty handed. Shopping malls reduced the frustration factor because there would be another potential supplier a few doors down in the same mall. But the mega shopping mall with 400 stores can take 20 minutes to get in and out of by the time you park the car, walk to the mall entrance, find the store you're looking for and walk the entire length of the mall only to find out that they don't carry what you're looking for. Prior to the pandemic, online accounted for about 8% of retail sales, a continuation of steady increases in the percentage of retail sales taking place online. Along came the pandemic and online sales virtually doubled to more than 16% of all retail. Then as the world emerged from the pandemic, online sales fell to about 14% of all retail before rebounding to about 16% in 2024. But not all in-store sales are truly in-store sales. An unknown percentage are "Clicks to Bricks" sales where the browsing happens online and the transaction happens at the cash register. This is still about the immediacy of the purchase which the ecommerce world has improved, but not solved. ------------ **Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
Send us a textIs the golden era of gaming truly behind us? We'll unravel this debate as we nostalgically revisit the gaming renaissance of the early 2000s, where titles like "Ratchet and Clank" and "Halo" defined a generation. Back then, games were seemingly more complete, devoid of today's constant internet downloads and pesky microtransactions. We'll explore how the industry's focus has shifted towards monetization, pondering whether the magic of gaming has been lost in the quest for profit. The gaming world has undeniably transformed, but is it for better or worse? We'll scrutinize the ethics and impact of modern monetization strategies like character customization and pay-to-win mechanics, with a critical eye on games like "Call of Duty" and the infamous Horse Armor DLC from Oblivion. The conversation doesn't shy away from the controversy surrounding microtransactions in games targeting younger audiences, such as "Roblox" and "Fortnite," questioning the morality of these practices. As the episode winds down, we'll address the complex relationship between digital and physical game ownership, raising concerns about consumer rights in an increasingly digital economy. We'll reflect on the continuing evolution of the gaming industry and its communities, with a hopeful nod towards future technological advancements. From recent movie reviews to a playful pop culture trivia challenge and a soundtrack guessing game, there's something for every entertainment enthusiast in this episode. Let's start with some headline stats which emerged this week.* The number of migrants to Britain has doubled since Covid.* 747,000 “permanent-type” migrants moved to the UK last year, the OECD said, up from 488,400 in 2022.* This marks a 53% year-on-year rise.* The four countries seeing the biggest surge in migration are the UK, South Korea, Australia, and the United States.* Note: Three of those four countries are English-speaking. This is something I have long argued: the UK will inevitably see higher than average migration levels because people prefer to go where they can speak the language, and more people have some English than other languages.Meanwhile, our birth rate has dropped to 1.4 children per woman, the lowest on record. The net result is that the demographics of this country are changing dramatically and rapidly. Different people means a different culture. The demographics of primary schoolsMigration measures, particularly illegal migration, are not entirely accurate. If someone has entered the country covertly, for example, there's often no record. Nor are censuses entirely accurate. Some don't fill the census in, many don't fill it in accurately, especially if here illegally, if they don't understand what it is, or if someone is claiming the single person council tax discount. There is a lot of scope for double counting for people with multiple addresses - students and so on.However, pretty much everyone who has kids sends them to school. There is no hiding, no double counting and so on, so the numbers you get from the schools' census are pretty accurate.White British now make up 61% of UK primary school kids. 37% are of minority ethnic background. The remaining 2% are unclassified. (In secondary schools, minority ethnic accounts for 36.6%).Minority ethnic includes Asian (13.4% of primary school kids), White non-British (8%), Black (6.5%), and Mixed (7.8%).Bear in mind that these figures are for the whole UK. This includes primary school kids in remote rural areas, where British ethnicity will likely comprise over 90%.White British was at 64.9% in 2020-21 and minority ethnic at 33.7%. The numbers are changing fast. From 65 to 61% in three years. Ten years ago it was 70%.This 61/37 ratio compares with 85/15 in 2002. Previously, I extrapolated that White British would be a minority in primary schools by 2035. But with the current trends, especially considering that migrants tend to have larger families than locals, white British could become a minority in primary schools as soon as 2030, or just after. The demography of primary schools will, within a generation, reflect the demography of the country.I doubt this is what the majority of British people want. But it's not a topic that's being discussed, let alone addressed, in the echelons of power. Instead, it's being brushed under the carpet.Well, it will soon be too late. This is an urgent and pressing issue. Without wishing to sensationalise, the future of the British people and their homeland really is at stake. Demography is destiny after all.You really should subscribe to the Flying Frisby. If you are thinking of buying gold to protect yourself in these uncertain times, I recommend The Pure Gold Company. As the 2024 American presidential election approaches, it is common to hear scholars and journalists discuss the role of particular groups such as Latino men or suburban white women might play in a razor tight race. Less attention is paid to the nation's youngest voters: Gen Z. Born between 1997 and 2012, these voters have experienced a decade of upheaval including, the murder of George Floyd, changing political norms with the election of Donald Trump, an insurrection after the election of Joe Biden, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Gen Z voters have lived under the constant threats of mass shootings and climate change. In response, these voters are mobilizing -- and left-leaning Zoomers, particularly women and LGBTQ people, have the potential to move U.S. politics to the left. Dr. Melissa Deckman uses original data – including nearly one hundred interviews with Gen Z activists and several national surveys – to highlight the increasing role of Zoomers. She argues that women and LGBTQ Zoomers are participating in politics at higher levels than their straight male peers, creating a historic "reverse gender gap." Dr. Deckman explores Gen Z's activism using mixed methods data and compelling personal narratives of how Gen Z activists have mobilized to defend reproductive rights, prevent gun violence, stem climate change, and win political office. A deep dive into the politics of Gen Z, The Politics of Gen Z: How the Youngest Voters Will Shape Our Democracy (Columbia UP, 2024) sheds new light on how young voters view politics and why their commitment to progressive values may transform the country in the years ahead. Dr. Melissa Deckman is the CEO of PRRI, the Public Religion Research Institute. She is a political scientist who studies the impact of gender, religion, and age on public opinion and political behavior. She was previously the Louis L. Goldstein Professor of Public Affairs at Washington College. Her previous books include the Tea Party Women: Mama Grizzlies, Grassroots Leaders, and the Changing Face of the American Right (2016) which examines the role of women in conservative politics. Melissa mentions Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why it Matters, and What to Do about It (Brookings, 2024) and the New Books Network's Dan Hill interviewed with Richard Reeves about the book.
