Tune in as Seth Vargas (Movie Friends) returns to the program to discuss Videodrome, the 1983 sci-fi body horror film about a TV station president whose discovery of an enigmatic and pornographic video broadcast drags his mind and his flesh down a spiral of terror. The David Cronenberg movie that Seth saw as a wee little child with his mom, recommendations for 1997's Hercules and the Black Mirror episode “Common People,” and the effect that horror and violent media can have on their audience end up being a few of the talking points for this episode.Written and directed by David Cronenberg, Videodrome stars James Woods, Debbie Harry, Sonja Smits, Peter Dvorsky, Leslie Carlson, Jack Creley, Lynne Gorman, Julie Khaner, Reiner Schwarz, and David Bolt.Spoilers start at 29:35Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Seth: the Vengeance trilogy from Park Chan-wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance)• Arthur: A Simple PlanReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

A Taste of Evil (1971), Snowbeast (1977), This House Possessed (1981) We're back on the small screen for our fourth dive into the world of made-for-TV horror—which should tell you something: we love these things. Maybe it's nostalgia from growing up in an era when you couldn't stream whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Or maybe it's because some of these films were just plain good—tight, creepy little stories that managed to leave a mark. This time around, we're not talking about the crown jewels of the genre, but rather three solid, middle-of-the-pack entries: well-made, weirdly memorable, and wildly watchable. You've got disturbed minds, ski lodge mayhem, and a haunted house that's a little too into you. If the stories don't grab you, the casts just might. Films mentioned in this episode: 1941 (1979), Abominable (2006), Alien (1979), Amityville Horror (1979), Asylum (1972), Beetlejuice (1988), Beyond the Door (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), City of the Dead (1960), City Slickers (1991), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Double Indemnity (1944), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Duel (1971), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), Halloween (1978), House by the Cemetery (1981), House that Wouldn't Die (1970), Horror of Dracula (1958), I, Desire (1982), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Jaws (1975), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Night of the Creeps (1986), The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Walker (1964), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), Psycho (1960), Re-Animator (1985), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), Scream of Fear (1961), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Snowbeast (1977), Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974), Suspiria (1977), A Taste of Evil (1971), Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962), This House of Possessed (1981), The Tingler (1959), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Videodrome (1983)

Shrouded in Desire: Cronenberg, Dixon & the Art of Grief

On this episode of Face2Face, David Peck sits down with legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg and acclaimed costume designer Anne Dixon to explore their haunting new film The Shrouds. We dive into grief, storytelling, and the power of collaboration—from Dixon's sculptural approach to costume design to Cronenberg's reflections on love, loss, and existentialism. It's a layered, philosophical conversation about death, creativity, and connection—and one that turns costume and character into deeply human art forms.Synopsis:In The Shrouds, visionary filmmaker David Cronenberg delivers one of his most personal and provocative works to date. The film follows Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a grieving tech entrepreneur who, after the death of his wife Becca (Diane Kruger), develops GraveTech—a revolutionary system that allows mourners to monitor the real-time decomposition of their loved ones via high-tech burial shrouds and smartphone apps.Set in a near-future Toronto, the narrative unfolds as Karsh's creation becomes the center of controversy and intrigue. When several graves, including Becca's, are vandalized, Karsh embarks on a journey to uncover the perpetrators, delving into a web of conspiracies that blur the lines between technology, grief, and obsession. Drawing inspiration from Cronenberg's own experience with loss, The Shrouds is a meditation on mourning, the human desire for connection beyond death, and the unsettling intersections of technology and emotion. With its haunting visuals, a synth-heavy score by longtime collaborator Howard Shore, and a narrative that challenges perceptions of reality and memory, the film stands as a testament to Cronenberg's enduring exploration of the human condition.David Cronenberg is one of Canada's most influential and daring filmmakers, renowned for pushing the boundaries of cinema. Often dubbed the “Baron of Blood,” his work explores the dark intersections of technology, the body, and psychological trauma. From cult classics like Videodrome and The Fly to award-winning dramas like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, Cronenberg has consistently challenged audiences with his provocative storytelling and signature style. With The Shrouds, he turns inward, crafting a deeply personal meditation on grief and connection, once again proving that he remains one of cinema's most fearless auteurs.Anne Dixon is a celebrated costume designer whose work spans film, television, opera, and dance, bringing characters to life through meticulous research and a deep understanding of visual storytelling. Her recent collaboration with Viggo Mortensen on The Dead Don't Hurt showcases her commitment to authenticity, as she recreated 19th-century attire with precision, even commissioning traditional ceinture fléchée belts from Quebec artisans to reflect the film's French-Canadian roots.Dixon's diverse portfolio includes projects like The Song of Names, Falling, and Anne with an E, earning her accolades such as the CAFTCAD Award and multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations. Her designs are known for their emotional depth and historical accuracy, making her a sought-after talent in the industry.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face.For more information about David Peck please visit his site here. With thanks to Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound. The film involves grieving tech entrepreneur Karsh (played brilliantly by Vincent Cassel) who has developed the means to surveil the dead in their tombs, including his recently deceased wife. After a series of grave defacements in the cemetery plot he owns, and in which his wife is buried, Karsh ventures down a rabbit hole of conspiracies technological, geopolitical, and psychosexual seeking answers in an increasingly indeterminate reality. We attempt to unpack this rich text with an examination of Cronenberg's perspectives on our hypermediated present, and how the constant hum of "connectedness" becomes an impedement to our ability to process our own traumas. Then, we explore the films labyrinthine narrative, weaving an intricate - a deliberately unresolvable - web of various plots, evoking the derealization of our interconnected age of information overload. Finally, we explore the films nuanced, mature eroticism, and illuminate why Cronenberg is the master of making non-cinematic sex feel simultaneously trenchant and deeply arousing. The Roxie theater in San Francisco is still seeking funds to help buy their building! The boundary between imagination and technology blurs in Lila Tirando a Violeta's mesmerizing sonic experiments. From her early DIY noise experiments in Uruguay to her current position as one of electronic music's most distinctive emerging voices, Lila's creativity has flourished despite—or perhaps because of—the challenges of living with a chronic condition. When health issues confined her to hospitals and home at age 23, Lila found herself transitioning from improvisational performance to structured composition. The internet became both her music school and lifeline, leading to collaborations with artists like Loraine James and Amnesia Scanner—relationships that began digitally before materializing in the physical world. This digital-first approach mirrors the themes in her work, particularly her fascination with David Cronenberg's Videodrome, which she references in her new album "Dream of Snakes."What makes Lila's creative process so compelling is her transformation of limitation into innovation. She samples her own pulsating tinnitus, captures field recordings from hospital rooms, and builds intricate sonic collages without formal training. Though her aesthetic suggests urban futurism, she's found her creative sanctuary in the quiet Irish countryside, where nature and technology intertwine in unexpected ways. Most striking is Lila's openness about navigating the music industry—from including special lighting requests in her rider to dealing with international promoters who expect her to play reggaeton simply because of her South American heritage. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. On the Saturday April 19, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet Dr. Janet McMordie. She is a sports medicine physician who blends her medical expertise with a passion for the arts. During the pandemic, she embarked on a simultaneous journey into storytelling, discovering a revitalized connection to her creativity. She shifted from a tunnel-visioned medical career to explore improv, acting, and producing. We talk about medicine, acting, her award-winning Second Act Actors podcast and much more. Then, David Cronenberg. The Village Voice called him "the most audacious and challenging narrative director in the English-speaking world.” He has directed horror films, dramas, psychological thrillers and gangster films, like “Shivers,” “Scanners,” “Videodrome,” “The Fly,” “A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises” and “The Dead Zone” among many others. Seven of his films were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or, the most recent being “The Shrouds,” which was screened at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce, “The Shrouds” explores the future of death. Casserl plays a “an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time.” It's an unsettling idea for a film, but it is a powerful and ultimately therapeutic look at grief in its many forms.

On this edition of Parallax Views, the biggest wrestling event of the year is only days away: WrestleMania. Billed as the "Showcase of the Immortals," WrestleMania is the marquee event of World Wrestling Entertainment and has been going strong for over 40 years. On April 19th and 20th, WWE will present WrestleMania 41. Yes—FORTY-ONE. Ahead of the big event, I spoke with Gary from the YouTube channel Grapplevision—one of the most unique and compelling voices in pro wrestling media today. While most wrestling YouTubers focus on current events or canonical moments like the Montreal Screwjob, Hulk Hogan's heel turn, or Mick Foley's infamous fall off the Hell in a Cell, Grapplevision dives into the ghosts and glitches of wrestling history. It's a channel immersed in what you might call phantom histories: forgotten figures, obscure promotions, uncanny storylines, and the lingering specters of wrestling's carny roots. What sets Grapplevision apart is its unmistakably hauntological aesthetic—think VHS degradation, lost tapes, and late-night public access weirdness. The channel's documentaries are layered with analog textures and deep archival digs, evoking the era of tape trading and underground fandom. In many ways, it feels less like a recap or explainer and more like a séance conducted with a turnbuckle and a cathode-ray screen. From the blurred lines of shoot vs. worked fights (explored in the "Wrestling Gets Real" series), to Japanese deathmatch icon Atsushi Onita's exploding barbed wire spectacles, to strange pop culture crossovers featuring Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and Jim Varney's Ernest P. Worrell—Grapplevision chronicles the strange, forgotten, and surreal corners of the squared circle. All this with an intro that cheekily nods to David Cronenberg's Videodrome. In this sprawling, four-and-a-half-hour conversation, you'll hear from someone who's not only been inside the industry but has also taken on the role of archivist and cultural historian. Even if you're not a wrestling fan, there's something here for anyone interested in performance, memory, mythology, and media.

Get More LVWITHLOVE Content Guests: Ian Mondrick – Comic Book Author, Co-Creator of STASH BOX www.stashboxcomic.com In this episode of the Lehigh Valley with Love Podcast, host George Wacker sits down with Ian Mondrick, a comic author and Lehigh Valley native whose latest project, STASH BOX, is currently live on Kickstarter. We talk about how Ian got started in comics, what goes into writing a horror book that's equal parts terrifying and thoughtful, and how STASH BOX draws from both retro horror aesthetics and modern anxieties. Set in a quiet suburban home and spiraling into surreal terror, the book explores themes of identity, love, and transformation—wrapped in the gory fun of classic horror. You'll also hear about the behind-the-scenes process of comic creation, what makes Kickstarter such a powerful platform for indie creators, and why supporting projects like this matters. To learn more or support the campaign, visit: www.StashBoxComic.com Watch Episode https://youtu.be/lAQ-7BO0YcI www.lvwithlove.com Thank you to our Partners! WDIY Lehigh Valley Health Network Wind Creek Event Center Michael Bernadyn of RE/MAX Real Estate Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub Banko Beverage Company Episode Recap Comic Author Ian Mondrick and the Dark Side of Suburbia in STASH BOX “This book is for horror fans first and foremost.” Ian Mondrick opens the conversation with a clear warning—STASH BOX is not for the faint of heart. It’s violent, strange, and deeply unsettling. But beneath all the gore is a surprisingly thoughtful exploration of young love, change, and the anxiety of growing up in a world that feels like it's shifting under your feet. That layered tension—between blood and meaning—is exactly what STASH BOX was built on. From Script to Scare: Writing Comics from the Lehigh Valley Ian shares how his journey into comics began in the Lehigh Valley and evolved into scripting indie horror books like Tomb of the Black Horse and now STASH BOX. He breaks down the mechanics of writing a comic—what goes into a script, how he collaborates with artists like Frederik Hornung, and why writing for comics is not like writing a novel. “There's a language to comics that you have to learn,” Ian says. “It's not just writing dialogue—it's pacing, paneling, page turns. You're writing something someone else is going to draw, and you have to trust that relationship.” The Horror of Transformation At the center of STASH BOX are two characters—Harrison and Lou—caught in the kind of one-night suburban misadventure that goes from strange to full-on horrifying. Ian explains how the comic plays with body horror and psychedelic imagery to reflect the fear of growing up, losing control, and becoming something… else. “It's about transformation—physical and emotional,” he says. “And it's not always pretty.” The comic's tone is inspired by classic EC Comics, Creepshow, and films like Videodrome and The Thing. But don't expect a nostalgia piece—STASH BOX is modern in its themes, experimental in its presentation, and printed on retro newsprint to give it a haunting, vintage feel. Kickstarter and the Power of Direct Support Ian talks about why launching STASH BOX on Kickstarter was the right move—not just for funding, but for community. “When someone backs a Kickstarter, they're saying, ‘I believe in this idea,'” he says. “And for indie comics, that kind of support is everything.” The campaign offers a variety of rewards: alternate covers, original art, mystery sketches, and even a chance to have your own comic cover drawn by artist Frederik Hornung. It's not just a comic—it's a piece of horror ephemera for collectors and fans. Backing Creators, Supporting Local Voices Though STASH BOX is set in a fictional suburban street, Ian admits that its quiet unease and layout were very much inspired by his own upbringing in the Lehigh Valley. That connection to place shows in the comic's atmosphere—a mix of the familiar and the uncanny. When asked why people should support this project, Ian puts it simply: “Because you're helping stories like this exist.” Final Takeaway This episode isn't just about a horror comic—it's about storytelling, risk-taking, and the power of direct creative connection. With STASH BOX, Ian Mondrick is building something weird, thoughtful, and terrifying—and he's doing it from the Lehigh Valley. If you love horror, independent art, or just want to see something new, this is the kind of project worth backing. Back the comic or learn more at: www.StashBoxComic.com

CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence.Violet Lucca, the author of the new monograph David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials, returns to the podcast from Brooklyn to discuss the book and his controversial 1991 adaptation of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis, filmed in Toronto standing in for 50s New York and Morocco, recreated by Cronenberg's longtime production designer Carol Spier in a former General Electric plant in Toronto's west end.We discuss Cronenberg's lifelong connection to Canadian cinema and the city of Toronto with digressions on Videodrome, The Dead Zone and The Fly before grappling with Naked Lunch, which is less of a literal film version of the novel and more a meditation about the life of Burroughs and what it is to be an artist in general. We also discuss Cronenberg's cinematic explorations of paranoia and conspiracy theories, and his relationship to the queer artistic community in Canada reflected across his career, even if he's always identified himself as a heterosexual man.And we (briefly) contrast Naked Lunch with the new Burroughs cinematic adaptation, Luca Guadagnino's Queer starring Daniel Craig, which we feel misses the boat on how to adapt Burroughs for the screen.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. In the horror community, the easiest way to show you are a fan is by what you wear. The horror T-shirt has been a staple in the fandom for what seems like forever. But it wasn't always like that. To say that fans have it easy today is a slight understatement. Not only in terms of their availability, but of the selection that is out there! It is an easy way to show the public that you are a card-carrying horror fan, whether you're wearing a Texas Chain Saw t-shirt, Cannibal Holocaust, or even a Night of the Living Dead shirt, it gives others that immediate notation that this person likes horror films. Fright Rags, one of the bigger horror T-shirt companies, has been around for over 2 decades, so we decided to ask owner/operator Ben Scrivens on the show to not only talk about the ins and outs of running a T-shirt company, but also to talk about our love of horror films and conventions. Films mentioned in this episode: Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Braindead (1992), Bride of Re-Animator (1990), Burial Ground (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Christine (1983), Day of the Dead (1985), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Faces of Death (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988), The Gates of Hell (1980), The Greasy Strangler (2016), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Hellraiser (1987), House by the Cemetery (1981), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), I Spit on your Grave (1978), It's Alive (1974), Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3D (1983), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Let Sleeping Corpse Lie (1974), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), Night of the Living Dead (1982), Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), Return of the Living Dead (1985), The Shining (1980), Tales from the Darkside (1990), Tenebrae (1982), Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), They Live (1988), The Thing (1982), Videodrome (1983), The Warriors (1979), The Wicker Man (1973)
