    Midwives of Tourmaline Collective

As one of the most developed countries, the United States has one of the highest maternal death rates. For most American women, giving birth in a traditional hospital setting is their first choice. While this is a viable option, there are other safe and effective ways to give birth that are simply less known. In today's episode, host Amy Hsaio is joined in conversation with Josie Patricio Petrich, Maral Shabak, and Allison Tartari, the Midwives of Tourmaline to discuss all things midwifery.    Even though all three women come from very different backgrounds, their goal is all the same: to provide women and their families with a safe and personalized birthing environment. According to the midwives, one of the most effective ways to increase safety in birth is to establish a genuine connection between the family and their provider. While hospitals are usually the first option, they don't provide personalized care and often perform unnecessary medical interventions– which only increase the likelihood of something going wrong. At the end of the day, birth should be an empowering and transformative experience; and every woman deserves the chance to choose the option that will make her feel safe.    Tune into this week's episode of Ask Mama Amy to learn more about the role of a midwife, the importance of personalized birthing care, and how midwifery provides women with a safe space to give a natural and beautiful birth.  Quotes: • “I was able to see how difficult Western medicine can be on anybody who's not a cis-white male. And so I really wanted to explore how to support women and non binary people in different ways, especially around birth, because by definition, it's not a medical procedure.” (05:38-06:02 Maral) • “After giving birth in the hospital with my first daughter, I realized that the hospital wasn't really set up to give individualized care or to share the goals of what every family is working towards.” (07:25-07:42 Josie) • “I wanted to support women and families giving birth. But I wanted to do it on their terms and not within the confinement of protocols and regulations that aren't really governed on individualized care or safety.” (08:20-08:45 Josie) • “You can only birth successfully in a place where you feel safe.” (16:09-16:12 Maral) • “In America, we have the highest maternal death rate in all developed countries, and it's just because of a lack of community, lack of individualized care, and unneeded interventions.” (20:25-20:39 Allison) • ”A strong mom is a mom that knows what she wants and is not fixated on the outcome, but really indulges in the journey that is motherhood.” (23:45-23:57 Josie) Links: Tourmaline Collective Facebook |  https://www.facebook.com/tourmalinecollective   Connect with Amy!  Website |  https://hsiaolaw.com/  Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/hsiaolaw/  Instagram |  https://www.instagram.com/hsiaolaw/   Hashtags | #hsiaolaw #askmamaamy Twitter | https://twitter.com/AmyHsiaoESQ  Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrvfMzTTbHslt3YxlZfDN1A  LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/ahsiao/    Get Started on Your Kids Protection Plan™ Today!  |https://hsiaolaw.com/kids-protection-planning-guide/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In a continuously advancing world, “having a plan for your intellectual property early on is important,” says Kristen Gonzales Roberts, Founder and Managing Attorney of Trestle Law, APC. Kristen is highly experienced in the realm of trademark and copyright law and has dedicated most of her career to helping businesses and individuals develop, protect, and recognize the value of their intellectual property. In today's episode, host Amy Hsiao sits down with Kristen to discuss motherhood and all things intellectual property.   According to Kristen, many entrepreneurs make the mistake of not prioritizing the IP early on. Working with an attorney can be expensive, however, Kristen explains that understanding and developing your brand correctly the first time will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. To get the best use of your IP, it is important to look at it holistically. You want to not only get the proper trademarks, copyrights, or patents, but you also want to understand how to leverage your intellectual property and take your business to the next level.    Tune into this week's episode of Ask Mama Amy to learn more about the importance of time-blocking and strategizing a plan to preserve your intellectual property so you can better protect your business now and in the future.     Quotes: • “We build our clients a bridge from their brands to their bank accounts.” (01:19-01:23) • “Once my husband and I decided to have kids, I had to start designing my life, practice, and the way that I approached law a little bit differently.” (04:51-04:58) • “I think moms are some of the best, strongest, and most powerful people out there because we have to be. We have so many things pulling our focus and time that we have to learn where we can be super-efficient and just get things done.” (05:02-05:14) • “It's not about balance, it's about just making sure that you get the things done that are necessary. Sometimes things are going to fall short and sometimes you're going to need extra support from your partner.” (06:48-07:00) • “When you have things like lessons, appointments, and activities in your kid's life that you want to be present for, you have to factor that into your work life.” (09:04-09:20) • “While you have common law rights, sometimes those common law rights are very broad and they're not very good at protecting you fully the same way registrations do. So having a plan for your intellectual property early on is important.” (12:35-12:49) • “Most entrepreneurs tend to pigeonhole their IP into individual boxes instead of taking a holistic approach to it.” (12:53-13:03) • “I really don't think that we should be judging each other because we already get so much judgment from the world that we, as moms, need to be as supportive of one another as we can be.” (27:31-27:43) Links: Connect with Kristen Gonzales Roberts Website | https://www.trestlelaw.com/  Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/kristen_roberts_esq/  Facebook |  https://www.facebook.com/trestlelaw    Connect with Amy!  Website |  https://hsiaolaw.com/  Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/hsiaolaw/  Instagram |  https://www.instagram.com/hsiaolaw/   Hashtags | #hsiaolaw #askmamaamy Twitter | https://twitter.com/AmyHsiaoESQ  Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrvfMzTTbHslt3YxlZfDN1A  LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/ahsiao/    Get Started on Your Kids Protection Plan™ Today! | https://hsiaolaw.com/kids-protection-planning-guide/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Cindy Grossman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Executive Director of Kids' Turn San Diego, a caring, non-profit organization that has been creating better futures for children experiencing family separation and divorce since 1996. Being a parent and a child of divorce, Cindy offers a unique blend of personal experience and professional expertise. Today, Cindy uses her combined experience to help transform the lives of families experiencing hardships.  Half of all marriages end in divorce, causing children to struggle with feelings of anxiety and depression at high rates. While divorce is never a child's fault, Cindy explains that children often place blame on themselves because they don't understand their own emotions. To help break this negative cycle, Cindy and her staff at Kids' Turn San Diego aim to give every child a place where they can express themselves and work through any negative, internalized behaviors. When children feel safe with their parents, families can overcome any roadblock.  Tune into this week's episode of AskMamaAmy to learn more about the importance of overcoming childhood trauma, effective communication, and how to empower your children to express themselves so they can create a brighter future.     Quotes • “Around 50% of all married couples get divorced and yet children still feel isolated and alone.” (12:54-13:04) • “There's no decision that should be made without consultation between both parents.” (18:30-18:35) • “You would be surprised by how many children internally think that they did something wrong which led to their parent's divorce.” (22:52-23:02) • “When you gain insight, you can change things. You can realize you have no control over somebody else, only yourself, and other people can't make you feel any certain way.” (23:29-23:40) • “When you empower a child to understand what a feeling is, give them a feeling vocabulary, and then you offer ways for them to share and express themselves. They let it out of their heart and they don't have to internalize anymore.” (24:22-24:42) • “A strong mom is a mom who accepts that she doesn't have to be perfect.” (29:37-29:42)    Connect with Cindy!  Website | https://kidsturnsd.org/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/happykidsandparents Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/kidsturnsd/?hl=en   Connect with Amy!  Website |  https://hsiaolaw.com/  Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/hsiaolaw/  Instagram |  https://www.instagram.com/hsiaolaw/   Hashtags | #hsiaolaw #askmamaamy Twitter | https://twitter.com/AmyHsiaoESQ  Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrvfMzTTbHslt3YxlZfDN1A  LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/ahsiao/    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions in your life, yet many people rush into relationships that aren't aligned with their souls. Witnessing many divorces in her childhood, Renée Piane, The Love Designer, was conditioned to believe that true love does not exist. As Renée entered the dating world, she found herself making the same mistakes she had seen in other unsuccessful relationships. It wasn't until she looked within her own heart that Renée realized she was prohibiting herself from finding love. Today, Renée is on a mission to reignite the love in people's hearts and reinvent their approach to dating and relationships. Renée explains why it is crucial to learn how to love yourself before you begin dating after a divorce. Renée encourages women to be honest with themselves and only give their time to someone who aligns with their goals and desires. When you take the time to slow things down, you allow yourself to understand what priorities need to be set in your life and naturally increase the chances of finding success in your love life. Tune into this week's episode of AskMamaAmy for an honest conversation with the Love Designer, Renée Piane. Learn more about common dating mistakes, the importance of slowing down, and how to change your destiny by getting real about love.   Quotes:  • “The choice of your life partner is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in your life. “Divorce isn't easy, but it doesn't need to be bitter,” says Bonnie A. Rabinovitch-Mantel, Family Lawyer. After going through a divorce and transitioning into a blended family, Bonnie decided to make the transition from medical malpractice to family law. Bonnie's first-hand experience in divorce and step-parenting opened her eyes to the need for strong, yet ethical family attorneys. Today, Bonnie runs her own firm where she guides families through the process of divorce in a healthy way for everyone involved.  One of the first lessons Bonnie learned as a step-parent was the need for boundaries. Even though she initially wanted to jump straight in by implementing her parenting style on the kids, Bonnie soon realized that she needed to take a few steps back. The reality is divorce is hardest on the children. Bonnie explains that having to adjust to new parents while still remaining loyal to biological parents puts a huge amount of pressure on kids. In order to prioritize the best interest of the kids, Bonnie recommends setting healthy boundaries that respect both the children and the other parent. Tune into this week's episode of AskMamaAmy to learn tips on setting boundaries, the importance of co-parenting, and how to make the most of your blended household.    Quotes: • “You have to make sacrifices and decide when am I going to work? And when am I going to be a parent?” (06:38-06:42) • “The turning point was seeing how my actions affected our kids.” (10:44-10:49) • “Obviously you parent your step children when you're with them but you have to know your boundaries.” (11:15-11:19) • “Not every divorce or blended family is toxic.” (13:21-13:26) • “Divorce is not easy but it doesn't have to be bitter.” (15:06-15:09) • “A strong mom is not afraid to tackle any road block in their way. On the premier episode of the #AskMamaAmy Podcast, Amy and Dr. Tess discuss the importance of family, relationships and maintaining your physical health.
