What if the key to understanding your child's toughest behaviors isn't just about discipline or routines – but about how their body and brain are processing the world around them? In this episode of the New Books Network, Parenting Trainer Patrick Ney sits down with Nancy Ceulemans, neurodevelopmental educational consultant and co-author of From Awareness to Action – Empowering Early Childhood Educators to Support Children with Autism (2024). While the book is aimed at early childhood educators, the insights Nancy shares are just as powerful for parents of both autistic and neurotypical children. Our conversation goes straight to the heart of the matter – why children act out in ways that often leave adults confused, overwhelmed, or stuck. Nancy brings decades of experience and a deeply holistic view of child development, tying together neuroscience, sensory integration, motor function, and family dynamics in a way that's easy to understand and immediately useful. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation: – We talk about the impact of environmental toxins on children's behavior – and some of the surprising sources many parents overlook – Nancy explains how the sensory systems can be hypo- or hyper-reactive, and how this plays a major role in behaviors like meltdowns, shutdowns, or extreme reactions to everyday situations – We offer practical tips for parents – whether your child is autistic or not – on what to do in the heat of a meltdown or when sensory issues are getting in the way of daily life – Nancy dives into the role of muscle tone and motor systems in regulating emotions and behavior – something that's rarely discussed but often the missing piece – She also shares moving and insightful stories from her own life and clinical practice – including helping a child with selective mutism and working with a girl who refused to wear clothes, uncovering the hidden sensory cause behind it The big message in this conversation is simple – when we look beyond the surface of behavior, we can start to understand what a child is really asking for. Whether your child is hitting, kicking, biting, spitting – or just struggling to cope with the world – this episode will give you new tools, new perspectives, and a deeper sense of connection. We are excited to have Samantha Levy, PhD join the show again this week to discuss Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Dr. Samantha Levy is a clinical psychologist specializing in youth with chronic pain disorders. She uses a biopsychosocial approach to address both physical and emotional struggles, working with children, families, and parents to help them align the mind and body for improved functioning. Dr. Levy also runs parent groups, writes a parenting blog for Creative Healing for Youth in Pain, and works as a psychologist for Whole Child LA. Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a condition in which often debilitating neurological symptoms appear without a clear medical cause, and this episode helps make some sense of FND, from the ways it manifests (paralysis, seizures, sensory disruptions) to the underlying emotional and psychological factors that ultimately shape it. We explore why FND tends to surface in individuals with a history of anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or other medical conditions and how social media and peers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, have played a role in its seeming to be more common. In this episode, you will gain insight into how staying calm, validating emotions, and avoiding reinforcement of symptoms can help support recovery. Dr. Levy helps us understand that treatment for FND is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach instead, including individual therapy to address emotional triggers, physical therapy to rebuild control over the body, and family therapy to create a stable support system. We also stress how schools and healthcare providers play a key role in recovery, and we explore strategies to ensure that the right team is in place. This episode of the podcast ultimately offers a message of hope – that FND can feel overwhelming, but with the right interventions, many children see significant improvement, and the experience can even lead to personal growth for the entire family! Show Notes: [2:46] - Dr. Levy explains how FND causes real neurological symptoms without medical explanation and has historically been misdiagnosed. [4:49] - FND can involve paralysis, sensory loss, and/or seizures, resulting from the brain misinterpreting signals. [7:14] - FND often affects individuals with anxiety and can spread via social influence. [10:13] - Dr. Levy discusses how pandemic-related stress and social media exposure contributed to FND symptoms. [12:22] - Dr. Levy argues that identifying emotional, physical, and environmental triggers for FND episodes helps prevent and reduce symptoms. [15:14] - To avoid reinforcing FND symptoms, parents should minimize attention during non-epileptic episodes. [18:45] - Professional guidance is very important for parents who have children with FND. [19:19] - Encouraging open emotional expression helps children with FND take on triggers. [22:43] - Therapy for teens with FND tends to address anxiety, trauma, and coping strategies. [25:22] - Dr. Levy discusses how physical therapy, guided imagery, and emotional validation help teens with FND regain body confidence. [28:38] - Dr. Levy reflects on how a child's FND episodes decreased significantly after shifting family dynamics. [30:32] - Overprotectiveness can actually worsen FND symptoms, so teens should maintain safe, independent activities. [33:39] - Parents should seek support themselves because their stress can worsen their child's FND symptoms. [35:45] - Dr. Levy points out that FND can be a wake-up call, prompting families to develop healthier ways to handle emotions. [38:00] - Dr. Levy reflects on how a girl's involuntary kicking symbolized suppressed anger, stressing a need for emotional expression. [41:27] - Various resources such as reactive programs and CHIP webinars help provide support for FND treatment. Dell Technologies has announced the extension of its current eight-year collaboration with children's charity Barnardos for a further year. This extension will bring the relationship to almost a decade long commitment to supporting children and their families in communities across Ireland. Since 2017, Dell Technologies team across its three campuses here in Dublin, Cork and Limerick have raised hundreds of thousands of euros and donated tens of thousands of volunteering hours to support Barnardo's family support programs. This includes annual participation in Barnardos Giving Day, a key fundraising event calling on the public to donate and support charity's mission of providing essential services to vulnerable children and families. The combined funding and the hands-on involvement have helped Barnardos continue their work with 26,000 local children and families they support across 56 services nationwide who are struggling with poor mental health, bereavement, financial strain and the impact of addiction. Over the coming year, Barnardos and Dell will provide additional training, social media assistance and volunteering contribution to the children's charity. Together they will join forces to develop digital learning opportunities so children can access Barnardos services across the country and develop essential digital skills. Commenting on the charity extension, Colman O'Flynn, Cork Site Lead and Vice President of Business Transformation at Dell Technologies Ireland, said, "We're delighted to be extending our collaboration with Barnardos Ireland. For close to eight years, our team members have come together to give of their time and skills as well as raising much-needed funds for the inspiring work undertaken by Barnardos and its team in communities across Ireland. This has helped 26,000 children and families in need. By extending our relationship, we can enable the children's charity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and the families they serve over the coming two years." Welcoming the announcement Suzanne Connolly, Barnardos CEO said: "Since 2017, the Dell Technologies team has been vital in Barnardos mission to create positive change for vulnerable children and families across Ireland. Because childhood lasts a lifetime. The continuous support of volunteers from each Dell site in Dublin, Cork and Limerick each year, particularly for our annual Giving Day, have made such a significant impact to the work we do. We are thrilled that our relationship with Dell is being extended and look forward to what is ahead."

Dr. Samantha Levy joins us this week to discuss the challenges of supporting kids with chronic pain. Samantha is a clinical psychologist specializing in youth with chronic pain disorders, using a biopsychosocial approach to address both physical and emotional challenges. She also supports parents through individual sessions, group facilitation, and a parenting blog for Creative Healing for Youth in Pain, while working with Whole Child LA. In this episode, we discuss the complexities of chronic pain and explore its neurological nature and the effects that it has on one's body, mind, and family dynamics. Dr. Levy explains the difference between acute and chronic pain, highlighting how the latter often persists even after healed injuries, creating a cycle of anxiety and misunderstood suffering. Our conversation goes into common causes of chronic pain in children and teens, including the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. We talk about how these can contribute to the development of pain around puberty, and Dr. Levy highlights the emotional and social burden that this puts on kids, with children often withdrawing from school, friends, and activities which, of course, only worsens their pain and mental health. With practical advice, Dr. Levy shares how treatment can address the root causes via a more holistic approach, including psychotherapy and mindfulness. She also discusses the importance of family support, the idea of "backward parenting," and strategies to reintegrate children into daily activities such as modified school accommodations. Finally, Dr. Samantha Levy offers insights for caregivers, encouraging them to prioritize their own well-being via self-care and support networks! Show Notes: [2:19] - Dr. Levy explains how acute pain alerts us to harm, while chronic pain creates anxiety and misunderstood distress. [4:51] - Chronic pain is a neurological condition that causes changes in the brain, often making it invisible. [6:06] Chronic pain is typically viewed holistically and includes biological, psychological, and social factors. [8:43] - Things like puberty, stress, and social complexities can make it even more difficult for kids to manage chronic pain. [11:16] - Kids with chronic pain are often perfectionists, emotionally sensitive, and/or tend to internalize stress. [14:47] - Chronic pain leads to isolation which then affects daily life, school, and relationships. [15:20] - Chronic pain ultimately impacts every aspect of a child's life, worsening mental health and often resulting in isolation. [18:54] - Isolation, anxiety, and chronic pain often create a vicious cycle that's further affected by family dynamics and support. [19:30] - Samantha explains how medical trauma from misdiagnosis or mistreatment leaves many kids feeling hopeless and resistant to new treatments. [21:02] - Strategies such as a team approach, psychotherapy, and/or mindfulness can help break the chronic pain cycle. [24:23] - Recovery from chronic pain involves re-engaging in activities and a shift in the approaches that parents are used to taking, [27:02] - Dr. Levy discusses how backward parenting encourages connection and avoids pressuring progress. [29:17] - Dr. Levy feels that parents must acknowledge discomfort and anxieties to support their child's recovery. [32:09] - Samantha argues that advocating for accommodations such as extra time and modified schedules helps kids with chronic pain. [35:19] - Physical accommodations, such as flexible bathroom breaks or desk signals, ultimately support kids with chronic pain! [36:57] - Dr. Levy points out how caregivers of children with chronic pain need self-care, therapy, and activities that offer healing. The Government's released a new child and youth strategy, with a focus on supporting children and their families in the first 2000 days. It aims to lift 17,000 children out of material hardship by 2027. 2000 days is just over five years. Parents often carry a heavy weight of shame and self-blame when their children face tough times. It's natural for them to feel responsible, but it's important to remember that not everything is within a parent's control. By staying present and connecting with themselves, parents can let go of the burden of shame and find a more positive, hopeful way forward. In this episode of Parenting Impossible, Annette Hines sits down with Celia Landman, a mindfulness educator and author of When the Whole World Tips: Parenting through Crisis with Mindfulness and Balance. They share an honest and heartfelt conversation about the real struggles of parenting during a crisis and how mindfulness and meditation can truly make a difference. Celia opens up about how parents can reconnect with their true selves and face difficult times without carrying the extra weight of blame or shame. By recognizing societal pressures, allowing themselves to feel a range of emotions, and offering compassionate support to one another, parents can find the grace and resilience they need to keep moving forward. This episode is a reminder that even in the toughest moments, there is hope and community. Parenting through a crisis is never easy, but it's a journey no one has to take alone. In this episode, you will hear: Explore the key differences between mindfulness and meditation. How mindfulness and meditation can benefit healing and self-awareness. How societal pressures fuel feelings of shame and blame. Why being present in someone's pain is powerful. Anna R. Haskins is the Andrew V. Tackes Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Director of Notre Dame's Initiative on Race and Resilience (IRR). Her research examines how three of America's most powerful social institutions—the education system, the family, and the criminal justice system—connect and interact in ways that both preserve and mitigate social inequality, with emphasis on early educational outcomes, intergenerational impacts, and disparities by race/ethnicity. Her work has been published in the American Sociological Review, Sociology of Education and Social Science Research, among other scholarly outlets, and she is co-editor of a recent book – When Parents are Incarcerated: Interdisciplinary Research and Interventions to Support Children (2018, APA Press). Her research focuses on how a parent's incarceration impacts how they interact with schools and its impact on a child's educational outcomes. Anna is a former elementary school teacher and prior to coming to Notre Dame she was an assistant professor of sociology at Cornell University. In February 2024, Notre Dame Student Government awarded Haskins the Black Excellence Faculty Award to honor her work as an outstanding Black community member. Children from hard places often have a hard time distinguishing real threats from perceived ones and can greatly benefit from some preventive measures of support.Empowering educators and parents with practical tools to cut down on fight-or-flight behaviors is well worth the time spent on prevention, and eliminates the need for intervention. Join me as I relay tried and true, simple strategies to help children (and adults) have stress-free transitions.

The legislation aims to hold dealers accountable without needing to prove they knew the substance was tainted. However, concerns have been raised about unintended consequences, such as felony charges for unknowing individuals. Additionally, the Georgia House is set to consider Senate Bill 371, the "Daniel D. Today's episode is a little bit different than what I've been doing in the past few podcasts. This episode is a bit more casual and instead of trying to teach a bunch of new information, my goal is to connect the dots and piece together some of the things I've been talking about. Specifically today, I want to talk about kids who struggle in school and what you can do as a parent if you're feeling overwhelmed about how to help your kids. I think it's extremely unfortunate that our traditional healthcare system makes it seem like once you have a problem or get a label you're just stuck with it. I believe that healthcare practitioners need to work together and really open our minds to the possibilities of what we can do to bring restoration to our patients. When it comes to school, parents are stressed about how their kids are doing and being told that their kids are holding the rest of the class back and that they need to be medicated for the greater good. I don't want you to feel stressed or defeated if you hear this. I want you to feel empowered! As a parent, you do not need to feel like medication is the only option for your child. In this episode I'll share some of the common obstacles that could be impeding your child's capacity to learn and what kind of help is available if you have a child who is struggling. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Dana Winters of the Fred Rogers Institute about supporting children in the development of empathy. More specifically, she speaks about the "simple interaction" approach. This approach focuses on four key dimensions of interaction: connection, reciprocity, inclusion, and purpose. It can be used in any setting, from the home to the classroom. By focusing on these four key dimensions, adults can help children develop empathy and build positive relationships. Dr Winters speaks further about specific examples of how to use the simple interaction approach with children. We also discuss additional ways to teach children empathy, including reading children specific books about empathy.
