करणी माता की बहन और दीपो जी चारण के घर चार लड़के पैदा हुए. करणी माता इन चारों लड़कों को अपने बच्चों की तरह प्यार करती थीं. बाद में इन चारों लड़कों के वंशज देपावत चारण के नाम से जाने गए. देपावत माने ‘देपा के बेटे.’ चरों करणी माता के साथ ही रहते. करणी माता के जाने बाद यह लोग उनके मंदिर के पुजारी बने. देशनोक जहां करणी माता का मंदिर है वहां आज भी देपावत चारणों के चार मोहल्ले बसे हुए हैं. यहां मान्यता यह है कि क्योंकि देपावत करणी माता के परिवार के सदस्य है इसलिए उन्हें स्वर्ग और नरक के चक्कर से मुक्ति मिल चुकी है. अगर कोई देपावत चारण मरता है वो करणी माता के मंदिर में चूहा बनकर पैदा होता है. इन्हें स्थानीय भाषा में काबा कहा जाता है. करणी माता के मंदिर में सैंकड़ो की तादाद में चूहें इस वहज से इसे चूहों वाली देवी के रूप जाना जाता है.
