Andrew Stoeten and Nick Ashbourne discuss all things Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays have either completed the least exhaustive managerial search in history, or they were always going remove the interim tag from John Schneider. Whichever it was, it's Schneider's job now, and on this episode we talk about his fitness for it, the hiring process, what managers do, and why the Jays announced it the way they did. Plus! Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s wrist injury and how it affects his trade market, the Jays' Gold Glove nominees, the Shohei Ohtani pipe dream, and more! In our previous episode we tried to highlight some of the positive aspects of a Jays season that ended as badly as one could possibly imagine. In this one we turned to the dark side, examining the problems with the roster and the state of the team — from pitching depth and development, to issues in the outfield, young players growing expensive, potential payroll ceilings, and more! An especially frustrating Toronto Blue Jays season ended in the most agonizing way possible last weekend, and understandably that's been the big focus among Jays fans since it happened. But there were good things to come out of the 2022 season as well — fun things, intriguing things, things to build on — and we wanted to take some time and highlight those. From the great situation the Jays now have behind the plate, to the having two clear top-tier starters fronting their rotation in Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah, to Ricky Tiedemann's breakout, and more, we tried to look on the bright side, even as MLB's playoff carry on without the Jays. This could be it! The Blue Jays began their 2022 playoff campaign with a whimper — or, more accurately, a deflating three-run first inning — and now must win a Kevin Gausman-Robbie Ray matchup with the Mariners in order to keep their season alive. No biggie! We talked about all that, including the highs and lows of Friday, and everything in between. Let's do this! The Blue Jays have made the playoffs! On Wednesday the regular season schedule ended with two pointless games in Baltimore, and now the Blue Jays are on their way home to kick off on Friday a best-of-three series against the Seattle Mariners for the right to face the Houston Astros in the ALDS. It's really happening! And so, with the most exciting time of the year finally upon us, we took a look back at how the Jays got here, what we made of the season, who surprised us in a good way, who surprised us in a bad way, and what the potential pitfalls of a very tricky short series with the Mariners might be. The Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot with the Orioles' loss on Thursday, and didn't have a game to play until Friday night. In a decision that exuded playoff bravado, the team boldly decided to hold off their celebrations until after they player the Red Sox — win or lose. They hammered Boston in that one, got hammered themselves, then came back and stomped the Red Sox again on Saturday afternoon. On this episode we talked about all that, plus Ross Stripling, Alek Manoah, Vlad's dancing, 2015, Buck Martinez, the road ahead, and so much more! Have a listen! The Blue Jays lost to the Yankees on Wednesday night in a game that was not particularly interesting, save for one of the most incredible things to have ever happened on a baseball field: Adam Cimber's attempted throw to home plate in the top of the ninth. Also Aaron Judge hit his 61st home run of the season, which is absolutely not a record and shouldn't be celebrated as such. His season overall, though? That can absolutely be celebrated. Gudge not lest ye he Gudged! Anyway! Callin's app is working again, so Nick and I were back to talk about all of it. Plus Buck's rant, Vlad's hustle, loonie dogs, and so much more! Have a listen! We took some time in between games of the Blue Jays' Tuesday doubleheader against the Rays to talk about more incredible at-bats from Bo Bichette, Mitch White's solid outing, the Rays' identity, Alek Manoah's “flu game” (results pending), Vladdy's struggles, hot dog loonies, ticket prices, Jordan Groshans' upcoming MLB debut for Miami, and more! As I write this the Blue Jays have won their first two games in Texas and continue the process of burying the Baltimore Orioles and solidifying their place in the wild card picture with now less than a month to go before the playoffs begin. But amid the drama in the standings, there is drama brewing between the commissioner's office and the clubhouse. This week MLB announced a series of new rules to be implemented for next season — a pitch clock, limits to the number of pickoff throws a pitcher can make, banning infielders from shifting to the other side of second base, and larger bases — that have many players and fans up in arms. So, in addition to discussions of Bo Bichette's incredible streak, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio, Kevin Gausman, Ross Stripling, José Berríos, and more, on this edition of Blue Jays Happy Hour we went in depth on what's changing, what and who it will affect, players' reactions, our though, *your* thoughts, and more. On Monday in Baltimore the Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but ultimately suffered death by 1,000 cuts — another Mitch White implosion, a Yusei Kikuchi appearance, Alejandro Kirk's game-calling, an inopportune double play, more failure to take their chances, an utterly insane video-aided application of the blocking the plate rule, a ridiculous Rougned Odor slide, Trevor Richards — as the Orioles stormed back to score nine runs on just nine hits to win the third game of this four-game series by a score of 9-6. It was a frustrating affair, but not one without some fireworks — and I don't just mean Bo Bichette's fourth homer and seventh-through-tenth hits over the last two days. Still mad about a phantom ball call on Kevin Gausman on Monday night, the Blue Jays' bench appeared to be giving an earful to home plate umpire (and crew chief) Jeff Nelson all night about balls and strikes. Frankly, Nelson's calls didn't seem especially egregious from a Jays perspective but — perhaps taking a cue from their fans on Twitter, who seemed angrily through with White and incensed by the use of Kikuchi (even though it was a game following a doubleheader day in which the team's starter couldn't even get out of the third!) — the team was in a particularly ornery mood. Ultimately this tension boiled over in Nelson's ejection of manager John Schneider in the seventh, who got every penny of his money's worth as he made sure to animatedly berate the umpire directly to his face prior to his exit down the tunnel. But not before another, altogether weirder situation. Orioles reliever Bryan Baker, who was in the Jays organization from 2018 — when he was acquired from Colorado in the Seunghwan Oh trade — until being claimed by Baltimore on waivers last winter, sparked a bench-clearing incident after looking into the Jays dugout and jawing at his ex-teammates, and Teoscar Hernández in particular, after recording the final out of the top of the seventh — an inning in which he'd given up a run! (Albeit on a Hernández double play.) The typically mild-mannered Teoscar was especially angry, having to be restrained from approaching the Orioles' players during the brief (and relatively mild) melee. “I guess he was mad because yesterday I hit a homer,” Hernández told reporters afterwards. “Every time he pitches against us he tries to make a show, but I'm not even paying attention to whatever he says. When I hit the ground ball he's staring at me and saying, ‘Yeah, yeah,' like I don't know what happened. And then he strikes out Chapman and he turned into our dugout and started talking and pointing at me, saying that I was talking too much. But I wasn't talking. And then he started walking (toward our dugout) and I just reacted.” “I mean, when he was here we were actually cool,” Teoscar added. “But I guess he has something in his mind.” Other Blue Jays were slightly more blunt. “I don't think it was a Teo thing,” said Schneider — who showed impressive speed in being one of the first on the scene when Baker turned towards the third base side of the field. “I think it was Baker looking into our dugout like he has every time he's pitched against us since he wasn't part of our team, and I think our team reacted.” “I think guys were fed up with it,” he added.. “You can enjoy the moment, we understand that,” Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said. “If you strike out somebody you can celebrate. But when you stare at the person it's kind of disrespectful. I don't know, maybe you think you're a superhero or something. Whatever it is. But yeah, it does cross a line.” “We believe if you're looking at the dugout, you want problems,” he added. “You want us to react.” Some reasonable points there, though I suspect your mileage may vary depending on which team you support. Anyway, dumb game! Dumb game. Here's the podcast we did about it before all those quotes were reported. Big one coming up on Wednesday!! The Blue Jays sputtered in their finale against the Cubs, and now head to Pittsburgh to try to maintain their grip on a playoff spot against one of the National League's also-rans. The Blue Jays dug themselves a 4-0 hole on Monday night, which would have been worse if not for some outstanding defensive work all over the diamond. José Berríos gave up a lot of loud contact, the bats struggled badly once again, and it looked for a long time like another ugly defeat was in the offing. Then the rally caps came out, Danny Jansen stepped to the plate, and the course of the night — and maybe even the Blue Jays season — was changed. On this week's episode we talk about all that, Jansen's playing time, Ross Atkins' weird comments, he re-acquisition of Bradley Zimmer, Marcus Stroman's return, unionizing the minor leagues, and more! The Blue Jays squandered all the momentum and good vibes generated by last week's 6-1 road trip to New York and Boston by falling three straight times to the lowly Angels over the weekend. Saturday featured a wonderful 30th anniversary tribute to the 1992 World Series winning team, and delivered on a hotly anticipated pitching duel between Alek Manoah and Shohei Ohtani, but other than that — and the performances of Ross Stripling and George Springer — there really wasn't a whole lot of entertainment to be had. Shut out twice, blown out twice, flagging effort, brutal fundamentals, 22 runs allowed in three games to a team that had scored just 12 in its previous seven and had come to town on a six-game losing streak. Before the end of it the Jays even waved the most symbolic of white flags available to them, bringing Yusei Kikuchi in to pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth in lieu of burning another reliever — a similar strategy to the one employed on Friday, when both Kikuchi and Whit Merrifield were called on to pitch. It was ugly. And as I write this the Blue Jays sit in the third AL Wild Card spot, with the Baltimore Orioles — a team just one year removed from a 110 loss season! — only 1.5 games back. While losing and volatility are part and parcel of the sport, and nothing about a season is ever as good or as bad as it seems, there's something special about this team's ability to confound. Even those who have spent their entire lives in baseball are befuddled by this Jekyll and Hyde season. “I think the word that's gonna follow the 2022 Blue Jays around for years to come is ‘streaky,' right? We've had more highs and lows this year than any team that I've been a part of,” said Stripling to reporters following his Sunday start. He's not wrong! And though that hardly means the season is doomed, it doesn't exactly give one confidence about the possibility of a long, sustained postseason run, does it? Especially considering that the Jays have — or had — a real opportunity, beginning with this series, to beat up on some also-rans and tighten their grip on home field advantage in the wild card round. Not great! And on this week's episode we talked about all that, the ‘92 team, Alek Manoah's velocity, potential off-season contract extensions, potential off-season subtractions, Gurriel's speed, Teoscar's foot, Springer's elbow, and more! The Blue Jays completed a 6-1 road trip to New York and Boston with an absurd extra-innings victory at Fenway Park that saw them escape runner-on-third-with-no-outs situations in both the eighth and ninth, and overcome at least three examples of sloppy fielding, a 2-for-12 night with RISP, Kevin Gausman's continuing BABIP problems, a Trevor Richards appearance, and the Red Sox' attempt to lull them to sleep by having their relievers take 14 minutes between every pitch. They did so with guts, guile, impeccably executed strategy, Matt Chapman's incredible glove, and another terrific outing from the bullpen. Anthony Bass, Adam Cimber, Tim Mayza, and Jordan Romano combined for four innings of work — two of which were Romano's — that saw the team bend but not break, allowing five hits and two walks but no runs. The bulk of the night was not exactly a good advertisement for the game of baseball, but in the end it was thrilling, and a statement of intent. The Blue Jays are in win-at-all-costs mode, and on Thursday that gave them the edge. Well, that and a brilliant slice of base running from Cavan Biggio and, of course, George Springer. After the game we talked about all this, Chapman's flip play, the best Jays defensive plays of all time, John Gibbons' arrival on Twitter, Saturday's tantalizing Manoah-Ohtani matchup, the 30th annoversary of the 1992 World Series team, and more! Did the Blue Jays' season come to a fork in the road on Wednesday night with George Springer's pinch hit single to break a 0-0 tie, and propel the Jays to a win, to avoid being swept by the Orioles, and to ensure they didn't waste a spectacular effort from Ross Stripling? Well, obviously we can't tell the future, but the mood around the team — or at least the fan base — certainly feels like it has been lifted in a major way. The good vibes continued through game one of a four-banger against the Yankees in the Bronx — a 9-2 victory featuring not just five hits from Springer, but a badly needed gem from José Berríos, and Yusei Kikuchi's improbable transformation from maligned starter into folk hero reliever! On this week's episode we talked about all that, Stripling's future, Vlad's Yankee Stadium Special, Mitch White, Alek Manoah, and more! Download the Callin app for iOS and Android to listen to this podcast live, call in, and more! Also available at callin.com
It's time for the Blue Jays to get serious about the state of their season, and that needs to start with removing Yusei Kikuchi from the rotation. A lottery ticket like Ken Giles could maybe help. So could returns from Julian Merryweather and Nate Pearson. How about a projection-busting sprint to the finish from *anybody*? Second base no longer being a black hole? The club's other starters getting back on track? George Springer looking like he's not in agony? There's a lot going on with the club, none of it particularly good at the moment. For the first time you can genuinely and fairly wonder about Ross Atkins' job security. And yet they still hold a playoff spot, they still have an outstanding lineup, they are better than they've looked. They're in an incredibly solid spot. They just have to start playing like it. We're one month into the John Schneider experience and, uh, things still aren't great! The Blue Jays have struggled almost as much as the Yankees this week, and to some this has apparently once again exposed all the fatal flaws we've seen from this team from day one — the bullpen, Yusei Kikuchi, weird struggles against bad pitchers, etc. It might not be as bad as it feels right now, but it hasn't been fun. Hey, but at least they signed Jackie Bradley Jr.! And on this episode we talk about all that, plus Mitch White, team-building, José Berríos, Bradley Zimmer, and more! Blue Jays fans got their first looks at deadline additions Anthony Bass and the surprisingly vaccinated Whit Merrifield, but it was some of the team's more familiar faces that powered them to a 9-3 victory over the Twins in Minneapolis on Tuesday night. Teoscar Hernández hit a moonshot that may not yet have come down. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., between displays of incredible defensive gymnastics, ripped a three-run, 115 mph laser into the Minnesota night. Bo Bichette had three hits, including a pair of doubles, even! The Blue Jays made some solid, sensible moves that made their team decidedly better on Tuesday at the trade deadline. It sucked!! Or it was fine. Time will tell, I guess. But that didn't stop us from reacting to it in real time just 30 minutes after the fact, as the deals were still trickling in. The Blue Jays avoided splitting a series with the lowly Tigers, taking three of four behind a strong José Berríos performance (except when his brother-in-law was up!) on Sunday and more heroics from Matt Chapman. And with that, and the Jays off on Monday, the focus now turns to Tuesday's trade deadline — which we talked about extensively in this one, going through MLBTR's list of the best trade candidates and assessing the fit and likelihood that the Jays might land them. The Blue Jays stayed hot with a win in the opening game of a four-game set with the Tigers, but it wasn't without its ups (Yusei Kikuchi, Matt Chapman) and downs (The Bo Play, Springer's elbow). Since we last talked the Blue Jays have won two of three against the Phillies and Royals, and also fired their manager! The Blue Jays beat Philadelphia on Tuesday night, putting themselves back in the win column for just the second time in eleven games. José Berríos was better than his line looked, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had four hits, George Springer made a great catch (and didn't injure himself!), Danny Jansen returned to the lineup (sending top prospect Gabriel Moreno back to Buffalo and straight into trade speculation), while star Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto stayed home to continue doing his own reseach into Covid-19 vaccines. The Blue Jays were swept at “home” over four games by the red hot Mariners in Seattle over the weekend, losing the finale in hilariously gut-wrenching fashion and continuing an utterly miserable start to July that has seen them fall into a tie with the Mariners for the third American League wild card spot, with the Orioles — the ORIOLES! — now just two games back. The Blue Jays have had a rough week, following up a brutal series with the Rays by struggling against the worst team in baseball. Wednesday's 2-1 victory in Oakland has hopefully set things right, and the boisterous pro-Jays crowd expected in Seattle this weekend should help. But they still need pitching reinforcements badly — a situation they're acknowledging by working the waiver wire for other team's cast-offs.
