Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants' and San Diego Padres' most unpopular players in recent memory were discussed. Turns out, there were too many to fit into just one episode. Locked On Giants and Locked On Padres continue to point out the players who were not embraced by fans since they started hosting their respective shows in Part II of the "Love to Hate" series.Numerous recent Giants certainly fall into that category. Even in 2021, when the SF Giants won 107 games, Tommy La Stella was disliked for his poor performance on the field, frequent injuries, and generally unathletic nature. In the last couple of years, after the Giants DFA'd La Stella with a year left on his contract, players like Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Anthony DeSclafani have been the target of fan frustration. Joc Pederson might even qualify now that he left the Giants and liked a negative instagram comment about San Francisco on his way out the door.On the Padres side, there's one clear and obvious winner who stands far above the rest. Eric Hosmer is host Javier Reyes' greatest nemesis. So much so that Hosmer has actually blocked the Locked On Padres twitter account. Hosmer's strong reputation is contrasted against the experience of actually watching him play on a daily basis and looking at the numbers that show he might be one of the most overrated players ever.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The Giants officially opened up spring training this week, and we had a lot to catch up on. First and foremost, the Giants plugged in some desperately needed power by signing Jorge Soler to a 3 year, $42 million contract. He's slotted to bat fourth and be the Giants' primary DH. Zaidi also said that they are essentially "done" with acquisitions and trades for now, although Blake Snell is still sitting out there as a prized free agent, not to mention Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger. The Giants traded Ross Stripling to Oakland, but their opening day rotation looks a little light. Perhaps the Giants will stand pat with signing Jordan Hicks, who will become a starter after a long stint as a flame-throwing reliever, along with a trio of young starters, until Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray come off the injury shelf. Hey, the Panda is back! But, don't expect him to make the roster out of spring training. We also talk about numbers, jerseys, and a LOT of 49ers talk.www.torturecast.com@torturecastfacebook.com/torturecast
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants have had a busy and productive offseason, even if the focus is on who they did not sign, and that those top two targets—Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto—ended up on the Dodgers. The SF Giants have signed Jung Hoo Lee, Jordan Hicks, Jorge Soler (pending a physical which takes place today, per Susan Slusser of the SF Chronicle), and Tom Murphy. They've traded for Robbie Ray, who's rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and traded away underperforming players such as Mitch Haniger, Anthony DeSclafani, and Ross Stripling. Yet despite all this business and productivity, it's hard to shake the feeling that the Giants are one big piece or two away from being legitimate contenders. Luckily, however, it's February 16th and there are still four top free agents on the market. And there's no reason to believe the Giants are done just yet, unless they come out and say something to that effect once their deal with Soler is finalized. Pairing Blake Snell at the top of the rotation with Logan Webb is so tantalizing. The duo finished first and second, respectively, in NL Cy Young voting this past season. Adding a Matt Chapman to solidify third base is also intriguing. Both Snell and Chapman have played for new Giants manager Bob Melvin and seem like obvious fits. In other news, the SF Giants' (non-related) trade acquisition of Otto Lopez is discussed. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb is a top-10 pitcher in major league baseball. The San Francisco Giants are lucky to have him anchoring their rotation for years to come. But beyond Webb, the Giants' current projected rotation is extremely inexperienced. The most experienced of the bunch, Jordan Hicks, has very little experience as a starting pitcher! The rest of the SF Giants' projected starters are young players looking to make their name in the game. Do the Giants need to add pitching after Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Anthony DeSclafani have all found new homes? Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of the Locked On Giants podcast: Given how the Giants were reportedly aggressively involved in the Corbin Burnes trade market, doesn't that alone suggest they are still searching for a top of the rotation arm to complement Logan Webb to start the 2024 season? Is it possible to get Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman? Or is it one of them and another starter? Is it realistic to think the Giants will land both Soler and Chapman? Or is it a situation of just one? Is Luis Matos going to be a starter on Opening Day? Do you enjoy the SF Giants' brand of baseball? Are you happy with the direction of this team? Do you think this ownership is committed to winning - as in, is it a priority? What grade do you give the Giants for this offseason? What stat do you value most when evaluating pitchers? Fantasy Baseball Live – February 4, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The Angelos family agreed to sell their team to a group headed by famed private equity manager David Rubenstein. Also included in the team is HOFer Cal Ripken and former NYC mayor and billionaire Mike Bloomberg. The Angelos family still has a controlling interest but has agreed to sell the team upon the passing of Peter Angelos, who is 94 and in failing health.a.While this doesn't guarantee that the new ownership group will spend money, the Angelos family was not going to. Therefore, I think it's a good thing for the Orioles franchise. Your thoughts?2.Perhaps related to the sale, the following day, the Orioles acquired Corbin Burnes from the Brewers for IF Joey Ortiz, LHP DL Hall and the Orioles 1st round competitive balance pick (Pick #34).a.What did you think of the deal? Was it a win-win or did one side get the better of the other?b.You have to like the Orioles top three starters now in Burnes, G. Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, no?c.Do you think the Brewers had to do this deal as the likelihood of signing Burnes, a Boras client, was next to zero?d.Are you investing in either Hall or Ortiz?3.The A's acquire Ross Stripling. It's not great stuff but he throws strikes. Any interest?Segment 3 – Starting Pitching Preview (We will likely do two podcast)1.How are you approaching this position for your upcoming drafts?2.We will break down the top 30 to 45 in detail. Then, go through the next 30 in less detail. We will end by jumping around the remaining ranked players.3.Which player not in the Top 15 has a chance to emerge there next season?4.Which Top 15 player will not be there next season?5.Give me a couple of sleepers6.Give me one, maybe two guys you will just avoid drafting?
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants' very odd and interesting offseason continued Friday, as they sent pitcher Ross Stripling to the Oakland A's in exchange for Jonah Cox and cash. In the deal, the SF Giants save $9.25 million, which is no small sum considering all they gave up was Stripling, who was awful last year, and the Giants also received a prospect in return. But the deal immediately made it look like a precursor to a bigger deal for the Giants, likely one involving a starting pitcher. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported today that the Giants were one of the teams in on Corbin Burnes before he was traded to the Orioles, and it doesn't seem like a coincidence that this Stripling trade happened the next day. Perhaps the SF Giants are preparing to back up the Brinks truck on last year's NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who'd pair exceptionally well with last year's Cy Young runner-up Logan Webb. But Farhan Zaidi said the trade was mostly about creating more avenues for young pitchers to get opportunities, particularly early in the season, before Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray return from injuries that are expected to sideline them for months. That may well be true, and the Giants do have an impressive pipeline of young arms, but in that case they must trade for or sign significantly more talent for this offseason to be a success. Whether it's starting pitchers or position players, the Giants must do more to improve after fans suffered through two consecutive painfully mediocre seasons.
