James Mangold's Cop Land Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, and Sylvester Stallone in one of the most highly-anticipated films of the 1990s . . . Springing from the headlines of the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and today, James Mangold's 1997 police corruption drama was released to critical acclaim and tepid box-office. In an era of 90s Independent filmmaking, focusing on newspaper/magazine headlines and evening newscasts, Mangold would write and pitch a story (ostensibly a Western) set in modern day life. The reluctant hero, Sheriff Freddy Heflin (an overweight, tired, and sad Stallone), who is neither the Rocky or Rambo hero Stallone is known for, fighting the corruption of an all-star cast of big-city police living outside of the city in a mob financed town. Stallone versus Keitel, Robert Patrick, Peter Berg and John Spencer, with a cocaine-addled Ray Liotta as back-up, and a disheveled, angry, and calculating Internal Affairs officer played by DeNiro manipulating the scene, Mangold's second film - with obvious comparisons to Scorsese - stands out as an brutal and honest look at police corruption and those wiling to stand up against it. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Our Continued Thanks and Appreciation. 00:00 And welcome to the program on your Tuesday afternoon. What a beautiful Tuesday we've got going on out there. However, I will say that I do believe everybody right now is walking around in shoes that have some form of yellow on them. I would imagine as pollen season is now. Here's the thing. Pollen season is now just starting. As we say here in the South, 00:30 It's fixing to get ready. It's fixing to get ready to be really, really heavy. It's already pretty heavy out there. I know you folks like me that suffer from seasonal allergies. And my seasonal allergies are basically January through December. I'm allergic to something all year, um but it uh is absolutely, and I'm, yes, JJ said you're allergic to Democrats. Yes, they make me break out in hives. uh 00:58 is what they do but if you are suffering from seasonal allergies, man, I feel for you this time of year. And this is just going to be the first dump. Because remember, we always get the spring dump and then we get the later dump uh in the summer and that's going to be happening as well. But good news is we've got a lot of things blooming out there including those horrible Bradford pears that Clemson is now going to trade you. 01:26 Well, they said that they will trade you uh several uh indigenous trees for one Bradford pear. Get rid of those things. They're absolutely horrible. there you go. So spring is springing all around us right now. Well, Nancy Mace has done something that everybody was wondering when she was going to do it because filing ends? Good grief. Are we already there? 01:55 Filing for public office in South Carolina, I believe, ends... When is it? Is it the end of the month? March 31st at noon? I believe that's it. So Nancy Mace has officially filed to run for governor of South Carolina. So now we got Nancy Mace, Alan Wilson, Josh Kimral, Pamela Evitt, we've got Ralph Norman, and we've got Rod Reddy. 02:22 who has also announced that he is running for governor. I don't know how big of a splash he's really going to make, but it looks like the field is now pretty much set in the governor's race here in South Carolina. And this is going to be extremely interesting to watch because what I'm looking for in a candidate, the number one thing as far as governor is concerned, governor's office is concerned, I'm looking for somebody that number one is going to be visible. 02:53 That would be awesome. mean, for the past almost eight years, we've had over eight years now, we've had a governor. 03:03 that has refused to just about answer any question. The only time we see Henry McMaster anywhere is when a new company is coming into town. 03:16 or oh some ribbon cutting, or we get some sort of a natural disaster. That's basically the only time we see Henry McMaster. So I would like a governor that's a lot more visible to the people that actually elect them. Number two, I'm looking for someone that is going to get in there and fight the legislature on some of these bad bills. That's what I would like to see him. Speaking of bad bills, um 03:44 We've got the bad bill sheet coming up at 4.06 this afternoon. We'll tell you some of the bad legislation that they're trying to pass in the House of Representatives. are a couple of good bills because we got primaries coming up. So they're going to try to lean a little to the right over in the state legislature. But I want a governor that's out there. I want to see them. I'm not just talking about getting out there and just praising us to 04:12 business and industry trying to get them to come here. I want somebody who's going to get out there and be a real champion for this state, the people of this state, the taxpayers of this state. That's what I'm looking for. So I want somebody who's going to fight against the bad legislation that's coming out of Columbia. That's number one and number two. Actually, you can flip those. Number one, I want to see a fighter. Number two, I want to see that ...

Winter is here in the UK, so while Saul and Lucy hunker down, don layers and fire up the kettle more frequently than usual, what do their minds turn to in the garden? Can we learn from more-than-human beings how to bring our bodies into a more direct conversation with the seasons? In this week's story, bioethics and history researcher Melanie Challenger explores how our culture insulates us from experiencing seasonal signals in the natural world, ultimately impeding our ability to respond to ecological change. Examining how animals and plants translate important shifts in the land into meaningful activity, Melanie reflects on what it would take for humans to reawaken the same attunement to the changes, great and small, unfolding around us.Read the essay. Artist Friendly with Joel Madden

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jutes. Springing out of Ottawa, Canada, Jutes is a former film school student turned musician who was raised on the Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, and Deftones. That influence runs through his latest full-length, Dilworth, out Wednesday (Dec. 3 via Position Music), and he'll ring it in with an album release show, live from Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre and streaming exclusively on Veeps. Springing Barghouti Would Foster Jihad, Not Peace

President Trump told Time Magazine that he will soon decide whether to press Israel to release Marwan Barghouti from prison. Doing so is being portrayed as a step towards an alternative to Hamas and consistent with our interests and efforts to promote peace in Gaza and regionally. In fact, unleashing Barghouti – a jihadist serving multiple life sentences for his involvement in the murder of five Israelis – would add immeasurably to the narrative that those who are, like him, committed to the destruction of Israel have won.  A truth-telling briefing by American and Israeli experts yesterday warned of the already-great dangers for both our countries of reinforcing that perception.  Sharia-supremacists, notably the leaders of so-called “allies” Qatar and Turkey, will simply intensify their double-game of using the President's “20 Points” deal to pursue what is, in fact, a truly “endless war” against Western civilization.  This is Frank Gaffney.

In this episode, Sean and Gigi are unpacking the brand new Star-Crossed World content from the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. They discuss the many things that stood out to them, like the graphics, complex levels, and amazing new soundtrack, while also considering how nice (and surprising) it is to return to Forgotten Land three years later. At the same time, both have some ideas for how the structure and level design of Forgotten Land could be adjusted for future 3D Kirby outings. This episode is mostly spoiler free, but at 1:05:52 they do shift to discussing spoilers. This shift is stated in the episode, but if you want to avoid any discussion of secrets or later game events, just be advised that the spoiler wall comes about an hour in.Questions or comments about the show? NM Max Farberov is a 27-year-old chess instructor, Chessable author, and online speed-chess specialist with a Chess.com blitz rating north of 2600. He joined me after a busy chess summer that included his first European open and one of his best OTB results to date: winning clear first in the Under-2300 section of the Washington International. As Max explains, this breakthrough came only after months of frustration and feeling that he had reached a plateau, making the success all the sweeter. In our conversation, Max and I discussed: Why he stays motivated to pursue tournament chess at an age when many slow down How he built an opening repertoire around the offbeat 1…d6 What he gains from following lesser-known professional tournaments Why speed chess is underrated as a tool for improvement Max's passion for chess is infectious, and our conversation is full of helpful chess improvement advice. Springing forward got you down, or up? Check out this re-release of our episode with U.S. News & World Report sleep expert Julia Forbes. Can't sleep? You're not alone but getting some good ZZZ's could be one hack away. The U.S. News & World Report annual survey on sleep is out. Survey says: 75% of us are too stressed out to get a good night's sleep. Julia Forbes is the magazine's sleep editor. She says there's a lot keeping us up. "Life stressors. You have work. You have kids. There are big world events that are top of mind that we also cover in our sleep survey," says Julia. Julia's journey to becoming an expert on all things sleep is fascinating. And, she reports getting nine hours of sleep a night so she practices what she preaches. Bad sleep is linked to everything from health issues to mood problems. That phrase "everything is better after a good night's sleep?" It's legit. Want to increase productivity? You need to sleep. Want to be in a better mood? You need to sleep. Having issues with your partner? Try sleeping with or without that partner. Sleep divorces are on the rise for the third year in a row and Julia says some sleep honesty can be great for relationships and she makes a great pitch for a sleep split. "I'm not sleeping well, I don't think you are either. So here is something. We can try to fix that," says Julia.
