Grant McAuley discusses the latest goings on for the Braves, which includes their path to the playoffs. With the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks all battling it out and with head-to-head meetings still to come, this four-team race could come down to the final series of the season. 92.9 The Game Atlanta Braves Insider and From The Diamond Host Grant McAuley talks about the pitching staff leading the way to the Braves recent hot streak, what Whit Merrifield's role may be when Ozzie Albies returns, Alex Anthopoulos finding a few more gems that most have overlooked, the Braves lineup routinely changing and still working out, how the playoff rotation will be a tough decision, if Jorge Soler is at all limited by his hamstring, and Jarred Kelenic's baserunning choices last night.
Headed in to Tuesday night, Atlanta Braves starting pitcher had not won a game in his last seven starts. The Braves offense, headed by first baseman Matt Olson by putting up nine runs in the first two innings, with Olson driving in five of those. Then the rains came. After an 86 minute rain delay, Max Fried told Braves manager Brian Snitker that he wanted to go back in the game, and Snitker obliged. Fried ended up going five innings in totality while giving up only one earned run, and the Braves bullpen was able to hold on for a 10-6 victory. This was a huge win for Max Fried, who since returning from the IL has slowly but surely increased his workload and gets a much deserved win. While Olson did most of the heavy lifting for the Braves offense, an unsung hero of Monday night's game was second baseman Whit Merrifield, who went five for five at the plate and scored twice. This presents a unique opportunity for the Braves once Ozzie Albies comes back, as Merrifield has hit right around .400 since joining the club. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk about Fried coming on for the stretch run, and what the Braves may do with their all of a suddenly found depth.
You knew Whit Merrifield would have a hit or two in Tuesday night's series opener against the Phillies at Truist Park. The Phillies released Merrifield on July 12. They were on a 106-win pace at the time. They are 12-20 since. Coincidence? Almost certainly yes. It wasn't just Merrifield who beat the Phillies on Tuesday. The top three Phillies hitters went 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts. The Braves retired the final 17 batters they faced. José Alvarado walked four in less than an inning. Not a good way to start another difficult stretch.Ruben, Jim and Todd also answer your questions: everything from Bryce Harper's health to Scott Kingery to The Phillies Show scented candles to unwritten rules for beat writers. The Atlanta Braves were able to bring home a winning record on their 10-game road trip, but were hit with a barrage of injuries in the process. Grant McAuley discusses how the latest injury issues could affect Atlanta's stretch drive, with none bigger than the uncertainty surrounding third baseman Austin Riley. He was hit by a pitch on the right hand and is set to undergo further testing as the club returns home. Between that, Jorge Soler's hamstring issue, and potential season-ending surgery for A.J. Minter, it was a tough stretch for the club on the health front. Not all was doom and gloom, however. Chris Sale continued his run of dominance this season and could be poised to do something no Braves pitcher has done since 1889! Teammate Marcell Ozuna is also in the running for a pretty special distinction if he can finish strong over the final six weeks. Atlanta is set to welcome Reynaldo Lopez back from the IL this week and benefiting from the play of two injury replacements -- Whit Merrifield and Ramon Laureano. The legend of Grant Holmes continued against the Giants and Charlie Morton reached a major strikeout milestone as well on this trip. We'll get into that and much more in "This Week in Braves Baseball." Special guest Brad Rowland of Hammer Territory joins the show to discuss the road trip, the injuries and what's ahead for the Braves as the get set for a showdown with the Philadelphia Phillies this week at Truist Park.
