The San Francisco Giants' very odd and interesting offseason continued Friday, as they sent pitcher Ross Stripling to the Oakland A's in exchange for Jonah Cox and cash. In the deal, the SF Giants save $9.25 million, which is no small sum considering all they gave up was Stripling, who was awful last year, and the Giants also received a prospect in return. But the deal immediately made it look like a precursor to a bigger deal for the Giants, likely one involving a starting pitcher. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported today that the Giants were one of the teams in on Corbin Burnes before he was traded to the Orioles, and it doesn't seem like a coincidence that this Stripling trade happened the next day. Perhaps the SF Giants are preparing to back up the Brinks truck on last year's NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who'd pair exceptionally well with last year's Cy Young runner-up Logan Webb. But Farhan Zaidi said the trade was mostly about creating more avenues for young pitchers to get opportunities, particularly early in the season, before Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray return from injuries that are expected to sideline them for months. That may well be true, and the Giants do have an impressive pipeline of young arms, but in that case they must trade for or sign significantly more talent for this offseason to be a success. Whether it's starting pitchers or position players, the Giants must do more to improve after fans suffered through two consecutive painfully mediocre seasons. Whether it's starting pitchers or position players, the Giants must do more to improve after fans suffered through two consecutive painfully mediocre seasons.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

In late 2023, three peer-reviewed academic articles were published in the Israel Exploration Journal that attempt to cast doubt on the authenticity of the Mt. Ebal curse tablet discovered in 2019. The lead archaeologist of the project that discovered this defixio, Scott Stripling, joins Henry to respond to these criticisms and thories, including the proposition that the lead curse tablet is actually a lead fishing weight.   Round Table discussion on Mt Ebal discovery - Digging for Truth The Times of Israel - article about IEJ articles The Mt. It was a big day in baseball as option and qualifying decisions were due, and it was the official start of full free agency. For the San Francisco Giants, on account of them giving out so many short-term deals with options in recent seasons, were among the most interesting teams to watch today. When all and said and done, the final tally was that Michael Conforto opted to return for one year and $18M, Sean Manaea opted out of 1/$12.5M, Ross Stripling opted to return for 1/$12.5M, and the Giants decided to bring back Alex Cobb for $10M in lieu of a $2M buyout. The most borderline and potentially consequential decision was Conforto's. At $18M, it's a hefty price to pay given the very pedestrian season he just had. The SF Giants have also expressed interest in improving their outfield, which becomes all the more difficult with Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, Austin Slater, Luis Matos, Tyler Fitzgerald, and others all in the mix going into 2023.Manaea's decision to opt out may have surprised some, but it wasn't really all that surprising given his excellent performance after a rough first month-plus of the 2023 season. Stripling, on the other hand, never turned things around after a slow start and his choice to opt in was inevitable. The Giants' decision to retain Cobb on what was effectively an $8M decision was made a bit less clear when it was announced that Cobb underwent hip surgery that will sideline him for at least around six months. The Giants' overall commitments and payroll situation are now relatively clear, and those figures are discussed at length on today's show.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Logan Webb is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Camilo Doval is one of the best closers in baseball. Outside of those two, for the most part, the San Francisco Giants' pitching staff was a major mixed bag in 2023. But Webb and Doval, both 26 years old and under team control for five and four years, respectively, are a great foundation for the SF Giants. Webb led the majors in innings and was as effective as ever at run prevention. He had the NL's best walk rate and led the majors in ground ball rate among qualified pitchers. Doval continued to be nasty and rock solid for the Giants, and ended up tied for the NL lead with 39 saves.Next on the pecking order probably comes Alex Cobb, who was an All-Star for the first time in 2023 but tailed off in the second half as he dealt with a hip injury. Cobb notwithstanding, the Giants' veteran pitchers struggled for the most part. Ross Stripling was dreadful, and Sean Manaea had a really weird season with strong underlying numbers after an awful start. Both have the right to opt out and it's unclear whether Manaea will (Stripling almost certainly won't). Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani were not great at all. Wood's a free agent and there's one more year on DeSclafani's regrettable contract.Several of the bullpen arms were solid, like Tyler Rogers and rookie Ryan Walker. And then there were a handful of exciting young arms, with more on the way. Kyle Harrison, arguably the best left-handed pitching prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut and showed flashes of brilliance despite mixed results. Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn also showed flashes of their potential and those two, along with Harrison and Webb, could form the core of a good young Giants rotation for years to come.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants followed up an energizing win with yet another lifeless loss. The Giants' offensive funk has been persistent and profound. Even when the SF Giants show signs of coming out of it, they have another game like yesterday in which they scored only one run—again. Some of the pitching hasn't been much better. Home run-allowing machine Ross Stripling continued to serve up taters like it was his job. Several of Farhan Zaidi's moves haven't panned out in recent years, starting with the decision to let Kevin Gausman leave. Instead, they brought back Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Stripling, Sean Manaea, and Carlos Rodón. Rodón was great but left after a year and Manaea is showing signs of life, but otherwise it's looking like a rough collection of signings, particularly when Gausman wanted to return but SF didn't make him an offer. There was some controversy about Gabe Kapler seemingly making opposite moves with Wade Meckler in the span of three days. In the first game of the series, Kap let Meckler hit agianst a lefty with the bases loaded when Heliot Ramos was an option to pinch hit. In the series finale, he pinch hit Slater for Meckler with the bases loaded down by five runs. While this stirred some emotions, Slater is clearly a superior option against a lefty compared to Ramos (or, probably, Meckler) and so the decision was justifyable. The one argument that holds weight is that Joc Pederson was on deck and there was only one out. So Meckler could hit for himself (and hope to stay out of a double play) and Slater could hit for Joc. Slater's recent struggles don't matter much compared to his recent and prolonged stretch of excellence as a pinch hitter and vs. LHP in general.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!IbottaDownload the free Ibotta app and use code MLB for $5 off when you register. eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check.
