In manufacturing, we're all familiar with stress. But did you know that a lack of challenges and too much comfort can also have a negative impact on your health, mindset, and productivity? This is the core concept Paul Taylor presents in his great book Death by Comfort: How Modern Life is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It. As a former British Royal Navy crew member and a current Ph.D. candidate in applied psychology, Paul has in-depth knowledge about stress, resilience, and performance. In this episode on stress, comfort, and psychological safety, Paul draws from his own experiences and research to delve deeper into why discomfort and challenging situations build confidence and resilience, plus shares some of his favorite methods for rethinking how you perceive stress and engage with your team. 2:20 – In manufacturing, stress can be inevitable, so you need to find the right level of stress in your environment 3:36 - You can use principles from physical fitness and apply them to stress management 7:11 – To stay healthy and keep a productive mindset, you need to balance stress and recovery 11:54 – When you practice self-efficacy and do hard tasks, it builds your confidence 16:21 – Uncomfortable yet necessary conversations play a key role in workplace environments 17:38 – To change and improve how you give feedback and have challenging conversations, use the SBI (situation-behavior-impact) model 18:36 – Use the OARS model for motivational interviewing to encourage open questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing 24:58 – Take time to understand your purpose and the impact of your work 24:58 – Don't overlook the role of accountability in psychological safety Connect with Paul Taylor Visit his website Listen to The Paul Taylor Podcast Buy Death by Comfort on Amazon or at your favorite bookseller Read my book report on Death by Comfort

Luca was a young, successful entrepreneur with everything going for him—until one antibiotic changed everything. After taking ciprofloxacin, his body collapsed within weeks, leaving him unable to walk, riddled with pain, and abandoned by the medical system that was supposed to help him.Doctors told him it was “all in his head” , but what he uncovered was far more terrifying—a hidden epidemic of fluoroquinolone toxicity that has left thousands suffering. With no answers from Western medicine, Luca turned to biohacking, natural healing, and alternative medicine to fight his way back.
Welcome to episode 205 with Dr Ross Ellenhorn, who is a sociologist, psychotherapist and social worker. Dr. Ellenhorn is encouraging mental health professionals to be more present with patients and think outside the box when it comes to treatment methods. With offices in Boston, New York and LA, he offers the types of care that serve and empower anyone who has been diagnosed with psychiatric and substance-use issues and helps them recover outside of hospital, in their own communities. In this episode I chat to Ross about his incredible work, how he began working in the mental health space and how that informed his ground breaking approach to working with so called complex states of mind and mood. We chat about using a human first approach, the medicalisation of the human experience, approaching therapy as improv, the importance of play and curiosity and why human conformity is the illness that gets in the way of being authentic. Ross has spent many years researching change. More specifically why as humans we find it so hard to change, even when staying the same is killing us. We talk about this work; we talk about why we struggle to do things differently and how underpinning all of this is a fear of hope. I never say this lightly, but this is one of the most powerful episodes that I have recorded. If you've spoken to me in person over the last few weeks, I've probably told you about it and I've been taking a deep dive in to Ross' work regularly since we spoke. There is some incredible thinking points here and I'm sure it will give you plenty of food for thought. On top of that, Ross is a really lovely man and he was a lot of fun to chat to! He is the author of two books ‘Purple Crayons – The Art of Drawing a Life' and ‘How We Change (and 10 reasons why we don't) and they are available everywhere. A lot of what we do on our phones — maybe even most of it — is positive and productive, argues Bradley, but we need to clearly differentiate between good habits and mindless scrolling. He lays out the concept of "a screen time diet" that evaluates our digital consumption just like we do our nutritional intake. Is burnout simply the cost of doing business? What responsibility do employers have for the health and well-being of their workers? Jeffrey Pfeffer, the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business and author of Dying for a Paycheck and 7 Rules of Power, says that the connection between workplace stress and negative health outcomes is as strong as the link between smoking and cancer — and may contribute to as many as 120,000 deaths annually in the U.S. alone. So what do we do about it? Pfeffer's answer isn't just surprising — it's a radical critique of the way we work today. Is it time to rethink the way we work? Email us at ifthenpod@stanford.edu. Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"When I went to medical school, there was nothing called type 2 diabetes... Now kids as young as 2 or 3 years old are getting type 2 diabetes." - Dr. Mark HymanDr. Mark Hyman delivers a sobering examination of America's deteriorating food system and its catastrophic impact on public health. From the post-WWII industrialization of agriculture to today's epidemic of chronic diseases, he reveals how our food production methods have led to environmental destruction, depleted soil quality, and devastating health consequences. His stark comparison of health statistics from the 1970s to today's 42% obesity rate illuminates the urgent crisis we face, while his expertise as a physician adds weight to the alarming rise in type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and childhood illnesses. The conversation takes a deep dive into the staggering statistics of chronic illness in America, where 6 out of 10 adults currently suffer from at least one chronic disease. Dr. Hyman connects the dots between our industrialized food system, environmental toxins, and the exponential rise in conditions like autoimmune diseases, mental illness, and cancer in young people. Through compelling examples and clear explanations, he demonstrates how our massive spending on healthcare and pharmaceuticals isn't addressing the root causes of these diseases, challenging listeners to reconsider their relationship with food and its impact on their health.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!

"Poverty is a carcinogen"--Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, a longtime emergency room physician and med school professor, talked with us about his essential book *Inequality is Killing Us All." Bezruchka goes into depth on the way that economic inequality determines our access to healthcare. The U.S. spends more money on healthcare than any other country, but our outcomes, and especially our life spans, are not good. Children in America get less medical attention, poor people don't have access to essential services, and we're daily pummeled by the stresses of being poor and having to pay bills, go to work, pay rent, and be prepared if a medical emergency arises. This is a vital contribution to any national debate on health care, and Bezruchka is a passionate advocate for a more humane and democratic healthcare system. Note: This is a rebroadcast.Nietzsche's maxim, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," isn't just a sound philosophical principle. It's also a certifiable physiological phenomenon; toxins and stressors that could be deadly in large doses, actually improve health and resilience in smaller, intermittent ones. The ironic thing, my guest points out, is that it's the fact that we're not getting enough of this sublethal stress these days that's really doing us in.Paul Taylor is a former British Royal Navy Aircrew Officer, an exercise physiologist, nutritionist, and neuroscientist, and the author of Death by Comfort: How Modern Life is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It. Today on the show, Paul discusses the science of hormesis, how small doses of intermittent stress can make us more resistant to chronic stress, and why you need to embrace what Paul calls "discomfort harvesting." We talk about some now-familiar topics like fasting and cold and heat exposure with fresh inspiration as to how important they are to practice and how to do them effectively. We discuss how hot a sauna needs to be to get the benefits of heat exposure, Paul's suggestion for how to make an ice bath on the cheap, what may be the single best type of food to eat to improve your gut's microbiome, a form of fasting that's got anti-cancer benefits but is so accessible it won't even feel like fasting, what supplement to take to mitigate the effects of a bad night's sleep, and much more. We end our conversation with how to use what Paul calls a "ritual board" to stick with your healthy habits and resist the "soft underbelly" of modern life.Resources Related to the PodcastAoMPodcast #708: Overcome the Comfort CrisisAoM article/video on the benefits of cold showersAoM Podcast #801: The Cold Water Swim CureAoM Podcast #603: The Physical Keys to Human ResilienceAoM Article: How Saunas Can Help Save Your Body, Mind, and SpiritAoM Article: How to Sauna — All the FAQsAoM Podcast #585: Inflammation, Saunas, and the New Science of DepressionAoM Podcast #862: Heal the Body With Extended FastingAoM Podcast #328: The Pros and Cons of Intermittent FastingAoM Podcast #581: The Tiny Habits That Change EverythingAoM Podcast #425: Action Over FeelingsThe NOVA Food Classification SystemStanford study on the effect of fiber and fermented food on the microbiomeResearch on creatine as a neurotransmitter and creatine's effect on brain health (including impact when sleep deprived)Connect With PaulTaylorPaul's websitePaul on IGPaul on LinkedInPaul's podcastPaul's mental fitness course for coaches and health professionals

Few things are more valuable in life than the food we eat and the soil that grows it. So today, we have the great honor of talking with Joel Salatin. Named "the most famous farmer in America", Joel has spent his career advocating for sustainable farming practices, and pioneering models that show how food can be grown & raised in ways that: - are regenerative to our topsoils - are more humane to livestock - produce much healthier, tastier food - contribute profitably to the local economy Who wouldn't want that? Well, the government and Big Ag for starters. Joel refers to himself a "lunatic farmer" because so many of the changes he thinks our food systems need are either illegal under current law or mightily resisted by the deep-pocketed corporations controlling production and distribution. But that doesn't stop him from his passion of inspiring others to take a better path. He co-owns and operates, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore's Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers' market with produce and pastured beef, pork, poultry, as well as forestry products. On the farm, Joel and his staff pilot new practices, mentor young farmers, educate the public, and produce an excellent set of workshops for those looking to truly 'get their hands dirty' learning how to farm sustainably. He's a true hero to many, including me. And I predict he'll be one of yours, too, by the end of this discussion.
