The Nats lost on Friday night 6-5 at Dodger Stadium to open their nine game West Coast Road Trip. Mark (From LA) & Al discuss MacKenzie's Gore subpar's outing where he gave up five earned runs in over five innings of work. Gore issued four walks and only recorded four strikeouts, keeping him behind Boston Garrett Crochet for the MLB lead in strikeouts.(09:45) The offense slugged a trio of homers but was only 1 for 8 w/ RISP. Riley Adams ended an 0 for 32 slump in emphatic fashion with a solo HR in the top of the 5th to cut the deficit to 4-2.(18:00) Luis Garcia Jr. had a clutch pinch-hit 2-run double to trim the Dodger lead to 6-4 in the top of the 7th. Amed Rosario got the nod at 2B (and homered) and Garcia replaced Andres Chapparo at DH for the pinch- hit opportunity.(21:10) Paul DeJong had four hits on Friday night in his rehab assignment with AA-Harrisburg. It is looking like DeJong will serve as an utility infielder for Washington as Brady House is now occupying 3B.(23:40) A quick look at what we know about the contractual situations for both the Manager and GM.

The Nats rallied in the top of the 9th, but couldn't make it to extras in Monday night's 4-3 loss in Atlanta. Mark & Al dig into the decision to not use Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th, where it was tied 3-3. Jackson Rutledge initially stayed in the game, but then was relieved by Andrew Chafin as opposed to Finnegan. The All-Star closer has not pitched since Game 1 of last Tuesday's doubleheader.(15:30) Jake Irvin gave up three runs off of seven hits in six innings of work. Al points out the troubling trend regarding Irvin's strikeouts, as he only had one on Monday night.(20:35) James Wood chopped his 1th homer of the season, but it was another quiet day at the plate for his teammates. Washington went 0 for 7 with RISP and struggled against Braves starter Grant Holmes.(27:10) The six game losing streak is now the longest in MLB and it seems that they are playing form behind every game. Michael Soroka takes the mound against his original team on Tuesday night.

The Nats led 3-0 entering the top of the 6th, but in less than a half hour they yielded eight Guardian runs on their way to an 8-6 loss. Mark & Al evaluate Michael Soroka, who initially seemed to have an excellent outing coming off the IL, but his scoreless effort turned into being tagged with four Cleveland runs. Soroka took the mound in the 6th after needing only 67 pitches prior to that frame. (9:25) Jorge Lopez & Andrew Chafin each struggled mightily in the nightmare inning, including a run scoring wild pitch. The low key positive came from Cole Henry, who tossed three scoreless innings to keep the game in striking distance. (13:30) The offense scored six runs off of 13 hits, but Davey Martinez was critical of their 4 for 19 effort with RISP in his postgame press conference. (23:00) What is swirling in GM Mike Rizzo's head regarding the state of the bullpen? (31:30) Washington hosts St. Louis & Erick Fedde on Friday night. Fedde has made seven starts this season and is sporting a 4.78 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds had a challenging weekend (May 2-4, 2025) against the Washington Nationals at Great American Ball Park, finishing with a 1-2 record. Positives: Hunter Greene's Dominant Outing: On Friday, May 2, Hunter Greene delivered a stellar performance, striking out 12 batters and leading the Reds to a victory. His ability to overpower hitters was a highlight, showcasing his potential as a cornerstone of the rotation. Jake Fraley's Contribution: In Saturday's game, Jake Fraley made a strong impact in his return to the lineup, going 1-for-2 with a solo home run, scoring an additional run, and drawing two walks. His performance provided a spark for the offense despite the loss. Competitive Record Despite Struggles: Despite the weekend's losses, the Reds maintained a respectable 18-17 record, as noted in posts on X. This suggests the team has been competitive overall, even with a tough weekend, and fans remain cautiously optimistic about the team's potential. Defensive Highlights: Earlier in the season, the Reds showed flashy and clutch fielding, and while specific defensive plays from this weekend weren't detailed, the team's defensive capabilities have been a strength in recent games, which likely carried over to some extent. Negatives: Offensive Struggles with Runners in Scoring Position: On Sunday, May 4, the Reds went 0-7 with runners in scoring position (RISP), a critical factor in their 4-1 loss to the Nationals. This inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities highlighted a lack of clutch hitting, a recurring issue for a lineup that doesn't rely heavily on home run power. Defensive and Baserunning Miscues: Saturday's 11-6 loss was marked by sloppy play, including four infield hits allowed, two errors, two caught stealing, three hit-by-pitches, four stolen bases allowed, and a wild pitch on a ball that should have been caught. Additionally, a lack of awareness on a squeeze play cost them. These mistakes resembled “high school baseball” and were difficult to overcome. Bullpen and Pitching Struggles: The Reds' bullpen faltered in Saturday's high-scoring loss, allowing 15 hits. Earlier in the season, the bullpen was a concern, and this weekend's performance, particularly in giving up runs in key moments (e.g., Washington's three-run seventh inning on Sunday), underscored ongoing issues. Injuries and Absences: Key players like Austin Hays (hamstring) and Jeimer Candelario (lower back strain) were either sidelined or limited, impacting the lineup. Hays' absence, in particular, was noted as a challenge, given his strong .365/.431/.712 slash line since April 15. Candelario's struggles (.113/.198/.213) and subsequent benching further weakened the offense. Missed Opportunities Against a Favorable Schedule: Posts on X expressed frustration that the Reds, despite a relatively favorable early-season schedule, dropped to 18-17 after the weekend. Fans expected more consistency, especially against a Nationals team that capitalized on Cincinnati's mistakes.
Blake Murphy and Julia Kreuz recap the Blue Jays' weekend, where they left a ton of runners on base and made some curious choices on the base paths. Word of the Day: Natural (0:00-13:20) Tyrone is upset that fans have such a short leash with the Phillies; if they start winning you WILL watch the Phillies. (13:31-19:10) Tyrone believes SOME credit should be given to Tijuan Walker for his efforts so far this season compared to last. Ricky comes to defend Rojas. (19:20-30:30) Twitter poll: Bryce Harper made a nice gesture and revealed the gender of his 4th baby with a blue bat. Do you still enjoy it when Bryce does things like that? (30:50-42:30) Question of the Day: The Phillies were 1-11 with RISP yesterday, continuing a trend. Will the Phillies turn it around, or will this continue? The Philadelphia Phillies continue to struggle with runners in scoring position, going 1-11 last night in the series opening loss to the San Francisco Giants. Taijuan Walker had one bad inning that doomed his start, giving up six runs in the 2nd inning after Bryson Stott, Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos got the Phillies on the board the inning earlier. What does Rob Thomson do about the centerfield position with neither Brandon Marsh or Johan Rojas hitting?
The Mariners are having some difficulties with having the right guys for the right situations and it's showing in their struggles with RISP. What can they do? Plus, we deliver our nominees for Trash Take of the week and Salk crowns a winner.

Our MLB Insider Ryan Divish checks in from Havre, Montana where he's currently taking a break from covering the team to coach his stepsons travel ball team. The Mariners continue to struggle with RISP and strikeouts and now injuries are mounting for a team that can't afford them. The Mariners offense fails again as the team goes 1 for 19 with RISP and we are not happy about it. It's time to call them out after that abysmal offense performance. On the other side though, the pitching was phenomenal, once again and there were some spectacular defensive plays, but it was all for nothing with the offense wasting it all away. :30- Mariners Morning After, we address the offensive deficiencies with some clarifications after the Mariners fall to the Astros 2-1 in 12 inings. :45- Stocking Stuffers - Jalen Milroe got worse under Kalen DeBoer yet there are quite a few teams interested in the Alabama QB - Rumors continue that Shadeur Sanders is going to fall in the draft- could he land with the Seahawks?
