In this episode, we break down the Phillies' horrid set of series against the Diamondbacks and Giants. We show how the unwanted numbers in the RISP totals and pitchers' box scores led to the team's downfall. We also show how the September woes carry to the minor league system. Over the offseason, I worked on gaining more of a social media presence for the podcast. The Blue Jays completed a 6-1 road trip to New York and Boston with an absurd extra-innings victory at Fenway Park that saw them escape runner-on-third-with-no-outs situations in both the eighth and ninth, and overcome at least three examples of sloppy fielding, a 2-for-12 night with RISP, Kevin Gausman's continuing BABIP problems, a Trevor Richards appearance, and the Red Sox' attempt to lull them to sleep by having their relievers take 14 minutes between every pitch. They did so with guts, guile, impeccably executed strategy, Matt Chapman's incredible glove, and another terrific outing from the bullpen. Anthony Bass, Adam Cimber, Tim Mayza, and Jordan Romano combined for four innings of work — two of which were Romano's — that saw the team bend but not break, allowing five hits and two walks but no runs. The bulk of the night was not exactly a good advertisement for the game of baseball, but in the end it was thrilling, and a statement of intent. The Blue Jays are in win-at-all-costs mode, and on Thursday that gave them the edge. Well, that and a brilliant slice of base running from Cavan Biggio and, of course, George Springer. After the game we talked about all this, Chapman's flip play, the best Jays defensive plays of all time, John Gibbons' arrival on Twitter, Saturday's tantalizing Manoah-Ohtani matchup, the 30th annoversary of the 1992 World Series team, and more! MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo, weighs in on the Red Sox's chaotic year, how they have balanced acting as buyers and sellers at the past trade deadline, the front office's approach to both Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts' futures with the club, and what the Jays can expect when they face starting pitcher Josh Winckowski (34:00). Then, The Athletic's Eno Sarris, shares his reaction to Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno exploring selling the team, Ross Stripling moving up in Eno's "Stuff+", how the 32-year old has continued to reinvent himself on the mound, and the different change-up release points (01:01:00). The St. Louis Cardinals lost 4-3 to the Milwaukee Brewers tonight, and it was in large part due to the team not executing the little things. While the offense did prove Josh Hader is human, they were unable to score any runs off of him in the 9th. All in all, it's a tough loss to swallow but the focus must move to winning two of the next three at home. (Also, Paul Goldschmidt is on another level right now). WANT MORE DAILY ST. Gerrit Cole has the shortest outing of his career on Tuesday in Detroit, and the bullpen had to step in and get the final 22 outs. Mike Lefko in for Mike Salk and we start the show by stating the good news of what we saw with the M's yesterday as rookie Matt Brash makes his MLB debut lasting 5 1/3 innings with 6 Ks and only 1 walk. The bad is that the offense still looks quiet and especially bad with RISP. With the draft looming Lefko wonders about the Seahawks' plans for LT Duane Brown - will they draft his replacement or sign him to a long term deal? It's too early to get lost in 'what-ifs' for the Mariners, but Lefko believes some adjustments clearly need to happen to get the offense going with this much talent in the lineup. The M's were also the recipient of a few bad breaks on hard-hit balls yesterday, but the RISP average is troubling. Michael Bumpus joins Lefko for his thoughts on how this year's draft will unfold for the Seahawks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
