In this week's Politics Block we engage with Bill Maher's latest “New Rule” on the topic of liberals insisting on purity tests to judge how enlightened and woke their fellow Democrats are. We also apply this to the dating world, where a similar dynamic exists.
Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ended all the speculation and announced her campaign for Georgia's governor's office early today. Greg Bluestein from the Atlanta Journal Constitution had a prolonged Q & A with Bottoms and it was somewhat revealing, actually. I'm still only lukewarm to the prospects of her being the Democratic party's nominee, but it's hard to ignore her introduction being an effective launch. ------Former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, the ex-Republican, has advice for the Democratic Party - to take a "new" direction he says. The problem is, this "new" direction is the same direction the party's tried taking since the ascendancy of Ronald Reagan - appeal to the center - and it's only failed the party more than it's aided them, but sure. Actually, no; Geoff should work harder to help sanity retake the GOP instead of trying to remake the Democratic Party to his liking. ------Bill Maher' sort of fallen from grace with a lot of us on the left, but occasionally he still delivers a "New Rule" worthy of sharing, and last weekend, he called out those on the right and the left for being so lacking in having 'core convictions.'

Kerry Lutz introduced the topic of the recent decision to remove medical debt from credit reports, emphasizing its significance for consumers. Paul Oster elaborated on the positive implications of this change, noting that it will benefit approximately 15 million Americans by potentially increasing their credit scores by an average of 20 points. He clarified that this initiative does not eliminate or forgive medical debt but prevents it from adversely affecting credit ratings. Oster highlighted the broader economic context, including rising costs and higher interest rates, suggesting that this change could lead to more mortgage approvals and stimulate the housing market. Oster also discussed the ongoing challenges consumers face, particularly regarding affordability and persistent inflation, which may take longer to resolve than expected. He encouraged consumers to check their credit reports weekly through the official site, annualcreditreport.com, and to focus on maintaining a credit utilization ratio below 30%. Oster recommended strategies for debt elimination, such as analyzing personal finances, creating a household budget, and utilizing tools like Mint.com to identify savings opportunities. He emphasized the importance of paying down credit card debt for better financial returns and shared insights on how credit scores are influenced by payment history and utilization ratios. Throughout the discussion, Lutz engaged with Oster, expressing shared concerns about the unpredictability of credit scoring algorithms. New Rule Will Force Hotels and Others to Disclose ‘Junk Fees' Upfront by Lehto's Law
If you want to retire early, the Mad Fientist is your guide. For over a decade, Brandon, more commonly known as the “Mad Fientist,” has been running simulations, experiments, and exercises to discover which road to early retirement is the fastest. Now, in his forties, Brandon has time to reflect on what worked, what didn't, and his regrets on the sprint to early retirement and financial freedom. And he's also got a new update that'll make your early retirement journey smoother. After tinkering with the beloved and rarely challenged 4% rule, Brandon decided it was time to sit down and calculate how much you really need to retire early. For decades, financial freedom chasers have been breaking their backs, trying to have as much stashed away as possible to enjoy their well-earned time off from work. But, it turns out that this number might be overinflated, and you can retire with much less than you think. That means your early retirement timeline just got a LOT shorter. In this episode, Brandon will describe why the 4% rule may be a bit too rigid, how to ensure you'll have enough during early retirement, what to do during a market crash or correction, and why spending thousands of dollars on a coffee machine isn't such a bad idea. If you want to maximize enjoyment in early retirement, instead of building a big bank account you probably won't use, stick around! In This Episode We Cover Early retirement rules of thumb you MUST know when on the path to FIRE The 4% rule and why you DON'T need to follow it to a tee Retirement withdrawal rules and how much to spend during a crash/correction The skill of spending and what Brandon regrets most from pre-FIRE life Tracking your expenses and why knowing your costs is CRUCIAL to early retirement And So Much More!
