S2E11: On community and caring for the Asian womxn - The Cosmos

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2021 74:28

About this episodeWelcome to the final episode for Season 2 of Chief Best Friends! I am delighted to have our guests today, the founders of The Cosmos, Karen Mok and Cassandra Lam. I had wanted both of them to come onto the show back in Season 1 but the timing was never quite right for all of us. So it is with great pleasure and fanfare that the stars have aligned for both of them to come onto the show.On a personal level, I'm a big fan of the work they're doing in helping me understand the role of community for Asians and as women too. When I started this podcast, it was with the intention to raise Asian women's voices in both podcasting and entrepreneurship.Being part of The Cosmos myself, I know first hand how Karen and Cassandra is shaping and growing the community that's rooted in intention, transparency and integrity.  It is the standard I now use to measure the kind of gathering I hope to create for female founders here in Asia, and it's something I hope you can take away as we do the work we do in making this world a better place. There is so much we can learn from Karen and Cassandra, I know you'll come out of this episode just as inspired as I am. What you’ll learn in this episodeHow to nurture relationships by being open and vulnerableHow to keep in touch with your friendsHow to endure and persevere through the tough times in starting a business with your best friend and co-founderEmbracing the intertwining lives with you and your chief best friend and how that has been a core in their relationshipWhy we need to be vulnerable and authentic to our chief best friend since they are the person that we’ve committed our lives to intertwine with by starting a business. The challenges, disappointments and disagreements of their relationship and how that has helped them to grow personally and professionallyHow being grateful for the setbacks improved their relationship and business. How to live up to the values that they’ve built on their company LINKS AND RESOURCESBooks: Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love and Liberation by Jasmine Syedullah, Lama Rod Owens and Angel Kyodo WilliamsArticle: Buying Myself Back When does a model own her own image? About this episodeIn today's episode, we have Yvonne Yeo and Clowie Tan the co-founders of Relogo. They first started offering relocation services and they've recently launched a search platform to allow users to view available units from various coliving brands. One of the things that I've noticed with our guests here on Chief Best Friends, is that the business that co-founders choose to build is so unique to them.Clowie was one of the founders who started Chope, a well-known table booking platform here in Asia, while Yvonne led operations and expansion for one of the premier coworking spaces here in Singapore called The Great Room.In their case, Relogo was something that could only come out from their unique experience and background. They're coming onto the show today to share how that journey began. And how they've organically expanded their business offering to keep up with a constantly changing landscape, especially in the midst of a global pandemic. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODEHow past work experience can be the beginnings of business ideasHow to pick a business partner through complementary strengthsHaving mutual respect and enjoying each other’s company makes for a successful business partnershipHow being intentional can help founders build a company you’re proud to be buildingHow to combat resentment and agreements through open and honest communicationsHow to move fast and make decisions when there are two decision-makers LINKS AND RESOURCESArticle: Five questions with Yvonne Yeo, Relogo Relocation and Relogo Coliving (Tech Collective)Book: Becoming by Michelle ObamaBook: The New Contented Little Baby by Gina FordMeditation App: HeadspaceInstagram accounts to follow, for parents: @solidstarts, @baby_led_eating, @kids.eat.in.color, @curious.parenting, @the.dentistmomYoutube channels for parents: Hapa FamilyPodcast: On Being SAY HI AND CONNECT WITH RELOGO!Relogo ColivingRelogo RelocationRelogo on InstagramRelogo on YouTubeRelogo on FacebookRelogo on LinkedInYvonne Yeo on LinkedInClowie Tan on LinkedIn ENJOYED THIS EPISODE?Leave a review and help others find Chief Best FriendsShare with me on Instagram (@chiefbestfriends)Chat with me on Twitter (@cbfpod)

S2E9: On defining success and falling with grace - Rachel Kelly Davis and Danella Yaptinchay

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 23, 2020 51:14

About this episodeIn today's episode, I'm delighted to share that I have two amazing ladies from the Philippines, Rachel Kelly Davis and Danella Yaptinchay. In the eight years they've known each other as co-founders, co-workers, and most importantly, friends, they know a thing or two on what it takes to work with each other. We've all heard the advice that we shouldn't start a business with a friend. As we've seen in our episodes, that advice is a myth. One of the things we want everyone to walk away with when listening to Chief Best Friends, is that not all advice applies to us and our relationships. Similarly, we aren't here to preach that you should start a business with a friend but that it is possible. And for some of us, like Rachel and Danella, this works for them. With that said, it's not all rainbows and butterflies. Rachel and Danella joins us in our show today because they know how to make it work even when the business is not working. Yes, they've gone through the ups and downs of starting a business and then going through the painful decision to fold it. They share with us how their friendship was strengthened by these challenges, as well as how, because of their friendship, that they've found each other working together again.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODEHow friends help us go through hard timesHow to have practical discussions on the future your businessHow friends truly see us and our potential, serving as a mirror to our true selvesHow to use your gut in making decisions in lifeHow success can be defined as how sustainable an endeavour is in the long runHow to be comfortable with your choicesWhy done is better than perfectLINKS AND RESOURCESBooks: Witcher SeriesBook: Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi KawakamiBook: The Power of Intuition How to Use Your Gut Feelings to Make Better Decisions at Work by Gary KleinInspiring women: Kamala Harris, Jacinda Ardern, and momSAY HI AND CONNECT WITH KINTSUGI!Danella on InstagramRachel on InstagramThe Secret Sauce LabENJOYED THIS EPISODE?Leave a review and help others find Chief Best FriendsShare with me on Instagram (@chiefbestfriends)Chat with me on Twitter (@cbfpod)

S2E8: On empowering our well-being through voice - Kintsugi

About this episodeGrace Chang and Rima Seiilova-Olson are the women behind Kintsugi. I think of it as daily journaling by way of recording an audio note. Kintsugi's technology uses voice biomarkers to measure and predict well-being. In short, it’s talk therapy software for mental health, powered by our voice.Kintsugi is the result of when a software engineer (Grace) and a machine learning scientist (Rima) come together to solve a problem. The idea came about when they both realised that they had the same challenges in accessing quality mental health services through their healthcare provider. This is easily one of my favourite episodes as I know first-hand the importance of mental health and finding support. I'm glad that we’re having more open discussions about it as we all know what a crazy year 2020 has been so far. What you’ll learn in this episodeHow mental health is connected to body health and why you can’t just focus on one or the otherWhy voice-based technology and voice mediums (like podcasts and audiobooks) are so much more accessible to womenWhy the current popular media limits how women’s stories are showing upThe origin of the word kintsugi (spoiler alert: it’s Japanese)Why opening up about our own mental health is the first step to removing the stigma around it Say hi and connect with KINTSUGI!Download the Kintsugi app (iOS only, Android to follow)Kintsugi’s WebsiteKintsugi on InstagramKintsugi on TwitterKintsugi on Facebook ENJOYED THIS EPISODE?Leave a review and help others find Chief Best FriendsShare with me on Instagram (@chiefbestfriends)Chat with me on Twitter (@cbfpod) ---Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia. About this episodeSince 2011, I have been a huge advocate for clean cosmetics and ultimately made the switch to less toxic, organic, and safe skincare brands. Unfortunately for me and those of us living in Asia, there weren’t a lot of locally or regionally produced products. Or if there were, it was obscure and hard to get access to. Which is why I’m very excited to have Nerissa Low, Michelle Tan, and Stephanie Lee, in our show today to talk about what it’s like to build a clean beauty brand in Asia and the appetite for organic makeup in these markets. What you’ll learn in this episodeThe delightful practice of celebrating friendship anniversariesWhy having shared values is the most important when choosing business partnersWhy honest conversations improve all relationshipsTaking time to celebrate small winsThe best strategy for business is to always begin with an end in mindWhy you need to forget the myth we’ve been told that friendships and business don’t mixHow being yourself in front of work friends is the epitome of good chief best friendsWhy moms are the best! ❤ Links and resourcesThe Road Less Stupid by Keith J. I guess it’s during these times where we’re becoming resourceful in finding ways to earn money.I loved Pory the first time I came across it. As a non-technical person, I have had ideas that I want to validate but didn’t have the resources to build a costly prototype even if it’s just an MVP. About Chief Best Friends Reading books about how we can lean in, understand our confidence code, and how nice girls don’t get the corner office, there are mixed signals about what it means for us and our friendships. We can outgrow our childhood friends, make new ones that match our evolving identities, and even that gal pal you made at the office could end up hurting you (or vise versa) when it’s time to vie for that promotion. With all the nuances of being friends and making friends in adulthood, it’s hard not to think that friendships at work or in business is something to be avoided or at the very least, something to be wary of. Call me optimistic, but I believe that we can do more if we work together. Not only will we survive terrible bosses, late-nights working on our side-hustles, navigating the growth of a business; we will thrive if we have that one person—our chief best friend—whom we can do it with and who shares our vision of what a meaningful work-life is.
