Listeners of Grace and Intention that love the show mention: following jessie,Our guest on the podcast today is Jennifer Barnard of Baby Begin. She has been a pediatric occupational therapist for over 20 years. She is an expert on treating torticollis (tight neck) and correcting flat heads in babies without the need for helmets and trains other therapists all over the world to do the same. This is a really big deal, especially as a mom of a child who had to wear a helmet - I would have given anything to have known about the preventative and early treatment options Jennifer talks about in this episode. It would have saved us going through such a difficult ordeal with our second child. Since we work with so many newborn babies and families with young babies, we wanted to bring her onto the podcast to share some of her expertise and empower you as mom and dad to advocate for your little one. One of the most common fears parents have about sleep training is that sleep training will harm their child emotionally, mentally, or physically (or damage their attachment or bond). This episode is intended to encourage parents by providing some of the relevant evidence based research that has been done on sleep training and point you towards resources as you work through whether sleep training is right for you and your family. Did you know that the steps you take in your child's nap and bedtime routine sends a signal to their brain that it's time for sleep? Each step becomes a cue that tells your child it's almost time to go to sleep. Having a consistent sleep routine that you do before every single sleep is a very small, but very important part of your child's sleep puzzle. When we begin working with families, one of the very first things we do is help them come up with a sleep routine that they commit to doing before every single nap and bedtime. Now, we know that bedtime can be one of the most stressful things for families. We've worked with families whose bedtime routines take up to an hour or more as they try to get their little one's down for the night or for naps. Today's episode is going to help bust some myths about bedtime routines and you will walk away knowing exactly what you need to do. Every week we get tons of questions that go something like this: “How do I solve my 8 month old's night wakings?” “How do I help my 14 month old stop waking for comfort feeds during the night?” “How do I help my toddler or preschooler sleep without needing me to sleep in their room with them?” All of these questions essentially ask the same thing: how do I solve my child's night wakings? Which is EXACTLY what we help parents with here at the Goodnight House. However, the answer to that question is a little bigger than what we can answer in a simple Instagram story slide. Today on the podcast, I want to take this entire episode to answer this question and help you solve your child's night wakings! (This episode is for children over 5-6 months old, as newborns are a whole different ball game. Check out our newborn services and free resources). On today's episode we are really excited to have a guest on the show! Mallory Millet is a Speech Pathologist who specializes in pediatric feeding disorders. Her focuses include infant reflux, infant oral development and bottle feeding. Through her professional work, and with the lack of support during her own babies' feeding journeys, she created, The Feeding Mom. It is here that she provides in- person and virtual support to empower parents through their feeding journeys locally and around the world. Her philosophy is: every parent deserves to love feeding their baby. We created this episode to empower parents to know what signs and symptoms to look for if they suspect a feeding or reflux issue with their babies. In this episode, Mallory gives us red flags to look for as well as specific questions you can ask your pediatrician to help your little one get the help they need. This episode is for you - we hope you enjoy it and that it empowers you to advocate for your child. After I had kids, I realized what all the hype was about. As daylight savings approached after I had my first baby, I started seeing the panic in all of the Facebook mom groups I was a part of. A google search will yield the most complicated formulas used to try and ease babies and kids into the transition. It can be really overwhelming for families. I am here today to tell you that the time change does not have to involve two weeks worth of math to get your family adjusted. I think we tend to give the time change wayyy too much power over us and it causes a lot more worry and anxiety than it needs to. Today on the podcast I want to share 4 simple steps to help your child adjust to the Spring daylight savings time change (we've also got a free Spring Daylight Savings worksheet you can download HERE). I don't know about you, but this happens to us all the time: We get in the car and no matter how long or short the drive is, one of my kids falls asleep for the last ten minutes of the drive. Now, if you're a parent, you know how this ends up ruining their regular nap, because somehow that TEN minute cat nap was enough to make them feel rested enough to not fall asleep when you get home and try to lay them down. Maybe you've tried to sing and dance and roll the window down to keep them awake (only to probably fail) or maybe you've tried to sneak them into the house and transfer them to their crib hoping to save their nap. Unfortunately, that doesn't usually work. A lot of parents, specifically moms, end up feeling stuck at home because they don't want to risk ruining their kiddos nap. We never want you to feel trapped at home, so on today's episode we're giving you the secret to solving the 10 minute car nap. We work with a lot of tired tired parents, and we know how incredibly hard it is to wear all of the hats you wear and show up when you are so sleep deprived. One of the first questions we get asked and one of the main things we talk about during our discovery calls with potential clients is: how long will my child cry during sleep training? It's the thing that causes the most anxiety when it comes to sleep training. This episode goes over everything you can expect with crying when you sleep train your child. Do you have a newborn who has their days and nights mixed up (meaning they sleep alllll day long for you but think it's time to party during the night? Does that sound familiar? Or are you hoping to prevent that from happening because you've heard it's a thing? This is super common with newborns, but luckily there are some ways to help prevent and/or correct day/night confusion. Our sweet little newborns are born with no concept of day or night and their internal clocks are not very developed until closer to 8-12 weeks. That's why so many newborns end up getting their days and nights mixed up. One of the most common questions we get from parents is about early morning wakings. Parents will message us to tell us their baby or child is waking up between 4 and 5 am every day and they want to know how they can help them sleep longer. The big question: What is sleep training? (And does the Goodnight House sleep train?!) There is a LOT of drama around the term sleep training and we know it's a taboo term. Do a quick search in any online mom group and you'll see what we're talking about if you don't already. We're here to try and clear things up once and for all and hopefully ease your mind. I know I’m not alone when I say I’ve been feeling a little stressed, overwhelmed, and anxious the last few weeks. With everything going on in the world, even the smallest anxieties are being magnified. I wanted to take this episode to to let you know you’re not alone if you share these feelings of overwhelm or fear, but also to encourage you. We don’t have to stay stuck in our fear or our worry. We have so much control over our emotions, our reactions, and how we show up for our lives, even when things are hard. I know there are so many voices telling us what to do, how to cope, and which life changes we should be making right now, but my hope is that this episode gives you a super simple exercise you can do when you feel the overwhelm building up.
Does motherhood feel more like a hurricane of chaos that you're surviving rather than the awesome, joy-filled season you want it to be? If so, this podcast episode is exactly what you need to hear today. On todays episode I got to have one of my bucket-list guests on the show. If you’ve been around for even a minute, you’ve probably heard me talk about Allie Casazza. She is a mentor to not only myself, but hundreds of thousands of women all over the world. Her mission is to help overwhelmed women simplify every area of their lives.
I’ve been asked multiple times if I could share how I manage our home with kids so young and so close in age. I thought this topic deserved a podcast episode! I love hearing how other moms run their homes and what rhythms and routines they implement during their days, so I hope this is helpful to hear what we do. In this episode I talk about: My daily schedule with a 14 month old and a 2.5 year old, my daily rhythms and routines, how I pivot throughout all the different seasons of raising toddlers.
I wanted to approach goal setting a little differently this year. I typically set goals that add MORE to my plate or require more from me, but this year, my biggest need is to simplify. I don’t want to add more, I want to create room and space and do life well. I sat down and recorded my process for creating goals this year and I hope it helps someone else do the same. Raising kids in a world of so much technology and social media is so overwhelming. We’re one of the first generations to be tackling tech/social media use even just for ourselves, and the thought of raising kids with it can be kind of terrifying. Minimalism can change your life and your motherhood. When you have fewer physical items and less clutter, you spend less time cleaning your home. You spend less time feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. You can be a happier, healthier mama because of minimalism. Finding a balancing between taking pictures of our kids but still being present with them can be a pretty big challenge. We can either make the mistake of taking too many pictures and missing the experience and the joy of the moment, or we can make the mistake of never taking any photos for fear of not being present. Photography is one of my favorite hobbies so this is something I’ve struggled through and something I’ve definitely had to learn the hard way. I’m excited to talk about it on today’s episode and I’m hoping it might encourage you if this is something you struggle with too!
Somewhere along the way, the term, “Homemaking” has gotten a little bit of a negative connotation. But really, homemaking is just what it says it is: making a home. We all do it and there’s nothing negative about it. As home management expert, Kendra Hennessy, says, “Homemaking is about cultivating a home that feels inspired, that feels safe, that feels like the warmest place in the world to you and your family, perfection not needed.” In this episode we discuss mindset shifts we can make when it comes to homemaking, how to practically fir routines into our daily lives, and the importance and freedom of creating boundaries in our lives.
