Her daughter has completely left the nest and is getting married next spring and her son is in college. Lori has always been an organized person and loves to plan as much as I do. She found the podcast while looking for new ideas and systems to try on her organizational journey. Lori immediately upgraded the DIY Sunday Basket® in her kitchen to the real Sunday Basket®. She and I discuss how all the solutions ebb and flow, shrink and expand depending on your phase of life. A real light bulb moment for Lori was when she learned my philosophy on getting your storage room organized. In The Productive Home Solution™, I teach you how to organize your storage room as a store. This has allowed Lorie to transform her home over the past year. Lori has unlocked her time to do what she is uniquely gifted to do and that includes writing a book! We discuss Lori's book, “One Shade Greener at Home: A Room by Room Guide to Reduce Toxins, Lighten Your Environmental Footprint, and Live Simpler”. Listen in to hear the things I'm doing to live greener! Lori and I both agree that small consistent steps over time make the biggest difference! Decluttering underneath the bathroom sink is a quick win if done right. I'm not here to show you fancy organizing bins and under-the-sink storage ideas - just a few quick rules to help us get rid of items that are taking up space for items no longer used. If you are looking for small bathroom organization ideas - the first step is to declutter the items you don't need or want. This creates space for better organization. NOTE: I do want to give a shoutout to the homeowner whose sink we cleaned under because she was storing her items in a clear plastic bin, which made seeing inside the bins easy so she didn't buy duplicates of the same items. Today we are speaking with Jamie Gold, CKD, CAPS, MCCWC. She is a wellness design specialist who has a passion for helping people create healthy homes. Where do you start when you're decluttering? It can be so overwhelming if you've been storing and saving stuff for years. Instead of trying to #declutter and get organized all at once, focus on the easy stuff first. The reason we've created the #cluttercorner for you is to break decluttering into small chunks where we remove the emotional attachments. This allows us to make decisions about the things we currently own, and new rules about stuff we buy, store and save moving forward. Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist, the Uncluttered course, and new book, Things That Matter, shares a wise man's observation that our imprisonment by our things is not so different from the chains of communism. In addition to our things, Joshua names other distractions we may not even have considered – things like fear, past mistakes, money, work and leisure – and then some we probably have, like all things digital. We talk about steps we can take to be aware of our values, goals and purpose, and how to stay on the path to a life of no (major) regrets. LET'S TALK THE WALK! For the past year or so, I've been slowly decluttering, organizing, and becoming more of a minimalist. I just cringe at the thought of moving and transporting all the belongings that had to overflow from my closets, drawers, and shelves. Another reason to trim down is there will be a time when I do leave this earth, let's be real. We all do die at some point. I remember when my father passed away, I worked for weeks going through his home. It was an emotional time, but also very stressful with figuring out what to keep, what to toss, donate or sell. Then, years after his passing I still had bins and boxes of things I kept and put in my own garage. Now I'm challenged with going through all this stuff again. I'd like to not leave these experiences for my children. I'm going to do what I can to simplify my life and my belongings to ease any burden left on my kids and family when I pass away. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heavymetalmoney/support
The first rule of the clutter corner is fundamental for permanent change. Many people declutter in a random way and it rarely sticks. While they may have tossed items they no longer want, they haven't determined what they do want or why they collected the useless items in the first place. Clearing clutter then keeping it from re-entry is based on a few simple concepts shown here to help change the relationship to stuff. Want a room by room guide to creating your healthy home? If you want to design your home so it supports your health and well-being, start by understanding key tips and strategies for each room. Hello, and welcome to Episode 9 of Season 10. I bring Kate Hamblet back this week, and we go into more detail about creating a healthy home, looking at your home and project room-by-room. If you haven’t heard last week’s episode, I introduced Kate there, so make sure you check that episode out as well. Kate is an architect with her own business, Balanced Architecture, and she’s a specialist in how our homes can be designed to support our health and wellbeing, so, let’s dive in. SHOW NOTES: In this podcast episode, we welcome Kate Hamblet back. Kate was on last week’s episode, discussing how to create a home that supports your health and well-being. This week, she takes us through some key spaces and rooms in your home, and how to design them so they improve your lifestyle, and make your home a healthy one. Kate is owner and architect at Balanced Architecture, and she’s a licensed architect and sustainability expert. (We met Kate in our episode last week, so if you haven’t listened to it, check it out now). Kate also is the architectural force behind the fantastic online business and resource, “Balanced Home, Balanced Life”, where she teaches homeowners everything she knows about creating healthy homes of their own. Kate also has her own online course “Designed for Wellness” to help you create your own healthy home, as well as packaged services for you to get advice and architectural support along your journey. Kate says on her own website ... “I started on the path of wellness design in 2015 and haven't looked back. When I first went back to work after having my son in 2014, the struggle to manage it all definitely hit me hard. There was stress at work, stress at home, minimal sleep, and so much to do! I barely made my way through that first year, and I knew something needed to change. I needed to find calm in my life as a working mom. Since I wasn't able to do too much about the stress at work, I decided to look at what was causing my stress at home. And then I realized that the house I was coming home to was not set up for providing wellness. It was actually hindering my and my family's health and happiness. I went to work making small adjustments to my home that had a big impact on our health and wellness. Within a few months I was seeing changes in my mood. I was eating better. I was getting a better night's sleep. I was more productive at work. And most importantly, the time I spent with my family improved dramatically. Creating a home that promoted wellness was a life saver for my happiness, my relationships and my sanity!” With well over a decade of architectural design experience, Kate has the expertise to guide families toward the creation of a home they will fall in love with, all while keeping them safe and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Listen to the episode now. And be sure to get in touch with Kate to let her know you heard her on Undercover Architect, and to thank her for all they share!! This podcast is an edited version of the full interview with Kate. That interview is now featured inside my online course “The Welcome Home Course” for American homeowners. Head to https://undercoverarchitect.com/courses/the-welcome-home/ to learn more about “The Welcome Home Course”. In “The Welcome Home Course”, I’ve teamed up with award-winning American architect, Eric Reinholdt, to create a specific course for American homeowners. If you’re planning your renovation or new build, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and confused about the best way forward. Many homeowners make the mistake of diving in, and fall for all sorts of terrible advice as a result. And the journey becomes far more stressful, expensive and time consuming as a result. And their finished home never lives up to the dreams they held so dear. When you have the steps to follow … the map for your journey ahead, you can then move confidently towards that future home you’re dreaming of, and not waste any time or money. When you know that step-by-step system has been created over decades of experience in hundreds and hundreds of family homes like yours, you can save so much stress in your project, and create a home that works and feels great. And when you have the steps, as well as professional know-how, design knowledge, tools, resources, and guides, you can shortcut your journey, enjoy your experience, and avoid the heartache and drama so many experience. If you’re keen to make your journey simpler, be confident that the home you’re dreaming of is achievable, and know the steps to get you there …’The Welcome Home Course’ is the way. Together with Eric, we’ve packaged up almost 45 years experience to show you the way to your future family home. Luke 12:15 13:40 - Examining our motivations behind work and collecting more stuff 17:12 - How minimalism opened Joshua's eyes to a new passion and approach to orphans and adoption. 18:30 - The Hope Effect 20:30 - Multi-generational influence of Joshua's family 22:50 - “I want to be as engaged and live each day as meaningfully as I possibly can” 23:50 - The big mistake of how much time and energy was invested into chasing the wrong things 24:30 - The mistake of wanting his kids to have the same qualities and attributes as their dad 25:10 - “So much of parenting is being intentional. So much is just studying our children and learning who they are.” 27:20 - Joshua describes two types of peace - peace in our circumstances and peace with the life that we're living 28:25 - “We can find peace in how we know that we're doing our best even though our best isn't perfect. I can still find peace in the life that I'm living.” 29:33 - “When the world is turning upside-down, when we're in these moments of trial and turmoil, we can know that there is a God who loves me, who is watching out for me, and a God who knows best.” 29:56 - “The things that are taking place around me may not bring me happiness; they may not bring me joy; they may be very difficult. But I always have that rock that I fall back upon. I can know that no matter how hard the wind is blowing… I have an anchor, and there is a God who loves me and is taking care of me and is watching over me.” 31:41 - Joshua talks about the benefits of fewer toys (both for kids and adults) 32:30 - Research about fewer toys leading to creativity and imagination and problem solving and contentment 35:00 - “Kids who don't learn boundaries become adults who don't define them for themselves.” 36:00 - “We overcome envy by focusing on the blessings we have, focusing on our uniqueness and what makes us special, and knowing we're directing our resources on what matters the most. This is where we overcome envy and start to find peace in our lives.” 37:06 - “We we find our greatest peace when... we know we're being intentional with our time and our money and our schedule and our space... when we can say I'm doing in this moment what I think God would have me to do... that this is where we find peace in our lives." I really believe that part of your journey to wholeness not only includes decluttering your soul, but also decluttering your home. Why? Because I personally believe a superabundance of stuff and clutter distracts us from focusing on what matters most in life. And so in today’s conversation, one of the most influential minimalist advocates takes us on a decluttering tour of our own homes, showing us how to decide what to get rid of and what to keep. Meet Joshua Becker. Joshua Becker wasn’t always a minimalist. But one day while cleaning-out the garage, Joshua’s five-year-old son made a single statement that set-off the momentum to make a permanent change: “Maybe you don’t need to own all this stuff.” He immediately recognized something needed to change. His belongings were not adding value to his life. Instead, they were subtracting from it. And so began their journey of donating, recycling, and removing their unnecessary personal possessions. They embarked on an intentional journey to own less stuff. As a result, they discovered more money, more time, more energy, more freedom, less stress, and more opportunity to pursue their greatest passions: faith, family, friends. In today’s conversation, Joshua offers practical guidelines for simplifying your lifestyle at home and addresses underlying issues that contribute to over-accumulation in the first place. The purpose is not just to create a more inviting living space. It's also to turn your home into a launching pad for a more fulfilling and productive life in the world. And I believe that is a key component of your roadmap to wholeness.
