Send us a textWhat if Mother's Day was never supposed to be about flowers and gifts at all? This special episode reveals the forgotten origins of Mother's Day in Australian hospitals, where Janet Hayden collected gifts for lonely mothers who had lost children to war—a far cry from today's commercial celebrations.Beyond the greeting cards lies a profound truth: motherhood carries both extraordinary power and invisible weight. With over 6.5 million mothers in Australia—one in six raising children alone and one in three families navigating developmental needs—the statistics tell only part of the story. Each number represents real women making countless unseen sacrifices daily. The biological toll of parenting is rarely discussed but critically important. Chronic stress literally changes cellular function, with parents of children with disabilities facing significantly higher risks of depression and burnout. This is why self-care isn't selfish—it's survival. Speaking kindly to yourself, resting without guilt, and asking for help before breaking aren't luxuries but necessities that allow you to show up fully for your children. We journey across cultures to witness the beautiful diversity of mothering: Indian mothers balancing multiple roles while honoring traditions, Nepali mothers nurturing with quiet dignity, Chinese mothers sacrificing for their children's futures, African communities sharing mothering responsibilities, and First Nations mothers preserving cultural wisdom across generations. Each expression carries its own wisdom and strength.Motherhood extends beyond birth. Some mother through adoption, like my own mother who chose me. Some mother in classrooms or therapy rooms. Some mother through grief after loss. Your presence today—how you speak to yourself, honor your needs, set boundaries—creates ripples through generations. When you break negative cycles, your child gains freedom to do the same.Ready to transform your parenting journey? The Empowered Parent Program helps you shift from self-doubt to self-worth, creating lasting change not just for yourself but for generations to come. Because your love, though sometimes unseen, shapes your child's entire sense of safety in the world. danabaltutis.com, mytherapyhouse.com.au, https://mytherapyhouse.com.au/your-childs-therapy-journey/ https://www.danabaltutis.com/services

Send us a textWhat happens when you're the only speech pathologist for hundreds of kilometers? Meet Bethany Burrell, founder of Speak To Bee, who travels across 200 kilometers of rural Victoria supporting children and adults with complex communication needs. Her journey reveals the hidden struggle of families in remote communities facing five-year waiting lists, three-hour drives to specialists, and profound isolation.Bethany shares how her own neurodivergence became her superpower, creating therapy sessions that look nothing like traditional table-work. "If they want to be under the table with a blanket over the top, that's completely fine. If we're walking on the beach having fun, that's fine too," she explains. This flexible approach helps her connect with clients who might otherwise struggle in conventional settings. The boundaries between professional and personal blur dramatically in small towns where your GP might also treat your clients, and grocery shopping becomes a therapy reunion. Yet these close connections create rich, meaningful relationships that sustain both therapist and client through challenges. Bethany's candid discussion about burnout—the warning signs, the recovery process, and the boundaries necessary for survival—offers valuable wisdom for any helping professional. For speech pathologists considering rural practice, Bethany paints an enticing picture of professional growth, personal development, and the incomparable reward of helping someone order their first hot drink or say "I love you, mum" for the first time. Her story reminds us that sometimes the most significant impact happens far from the spotlight, where dedicated professionals quietly transform lives one conversation at a time.Ready to explore how you might make a difference in underserved communities? Send us a textSpeech Pathologist Nikita Pinto reveals the critical pre-linguistic skills children need to develop before they can speak their first words. These foundation skills are essential building blocks that support all future communication development.• Reacting to sounds and people in the environment forms the basis of listening and understanding• Responding to people and turn-taking establishes the back-and-forth pattern essential for conversation• Attention span is crucial as children need to stay focused to absorb language information• Joint attention allows children to share experiences with caregivers about objects or events• Playing with toys provides exploration opportunities and contexts for language learning• Understanding familiar words precedes the ability to speak them• Vocalizing and making different sounds develops into first wordsParents often focus exclusively on getting their child to say words, missing the importance of building connection first. Children need to hear words repeatedly in different contexts for approximately six months before they can use them meaningfully. Using facial expressions, animated voices, and body language ("affect") helps captivate children's attention and makes words "stick."Instead of asking lots of questions, provide information by commenting and naming things in your child's environment. Use the "four-to-one rule" - offer four pieces of information before asking one question. danabaltutis.com, mytherapyhouse.com.au, https://mytherapyhouse.com.au/your-childs-therapy-journey/ https://www.danabaltutis.com/services

For all OG listeners who know that Blake suffered with severe reflux we specifically chose Pigeon bottles due to their teats with the anti colic system to ensure less air intake when feeding to limit reflux symptoms as well has having the soft touch teats for a softer nipple like feel making it all the more closer to breastfeeding. Indigenous cultures often have a very different view of raising children who receive diagnoses of autism or other neurodivergent conditions. These differences impact how families and children are supported, but also may result in difficulties when families need to interface with non-indigenous cultural professionals and systems to acquire services that may be helpful. Barry and Dave discuss these issues with Grant Bruno and Otilia Johnson, two parent-professionals from indigenous cultures in Canada and the US. A particular emphasis in the discussion is on what non-indigenous professionals can do to better serve these communities, as well as what can be learned from indigenous values and beliefs about raising children.Learn more on our websiteSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure, we welcome back Annie Hamilton, a renowned speech pathologist and feeding specialist sharing some practical feeding tips. Annie joins Meg to discuss everything parents need to know about starting solids for their little ones. This episode is packed with insights on creating positive, engaging, and effective mealtime routines. Annie provides expertise on practical feeding approaches and shares essential tips to make your child's weaning journey enjoyable and successful. With her background in both feeding and speech development, Annie offers a unique perspective that supports parents in understanding their child's feeding needs holistically. Preparing for the Weaning Journey Annie explains the basics of introducing solids, stressing the importance of proper seating and setting realistic expectations. She describes the process of balancing traditional feeding approaches with baby-led weaning to support each child's individual pace. Annie encourages parents to introduce a variety of textures and foods early on to promote adventurous eating. This balanced approach allows caregivers to incorporate both guided feeding and independence, building confidence in their little ones as they explore new foods. Social Eating and Family Mealtime Connection Annie highlights the importance of social interaction during mealtime and its role in a child's development. Eating together, she says, offers children valuable opportunities to learn from observing others, especially during family meals. She also shares tips on creating positive connections with food through family routines and without screens at the table. Annie describes how these mealtimes strengthen family bonds and provide learning moments that extend beyond feeding. Feeding Challenges and When to Seek Help Acknowledging that not all feeding journeys are easy, Annie discusses common challenges such as picky eating and limited diets. She encourages parents to pay attention to red flags, like long feeding times, weight issues, or respiratory difficulties while eating. For these challenges, Annie recommends seeking support from health professionals to address both the child's and parents' needs. Practical Strategies for Parents Annie and Meg share practical tips, including sensory-rich experiences to engage children without relying on screens. Simple activities like music, storytelling, and descriptive language create meaningful interactions around food. Annie emphasizes that making mealtime engaging and low-pressure can help reduce feeding struggles. This episode offers parents invaluable guidance on starting solids and overcoming common feeding hurdles. Annie's expertise reassures parents as they embark on this journey, emphasizing the importance of connection, patience, and trust. Whether you're just beginning or facing mealtime struggles, this episode will inspire confidence and make mealtime moments with your child more enjoyable.

Kimberly created a clothing line called Intelligent Fashion that has uplifting phrases like "I am loved" printed on the inside lining. The goal is to elevate women's self-perception through positive language touching the skin. We discuss specific strategies around self-talk, overcoming negative thought patterns, and the importance of believing our own inherent beauty and worthiness. I'd love to hear your biggest takeaways around using words consciously. What changes might you make to your self-talk or media consumption after watching? Looking forward to your insights!___________00:00 - The Impact of Words and Communication01:25 - The Power of Language and Intelligent Fashion06:03 - The Role of Nonverbal Communication09:36 - Understanding Intelligent Fashion13:59 - Impact of Intelligent Fashion on Women15:14 - Planting Seeds of Positivity18:05 - The Power of Self-Affirmation22:39 - Impact of Words on the Brain26:58 - Harnessing the Power of Positive Language29:37 - Token Clothing Company Vision29:53 - Pursuing Passion in Fashion and Speech Pathology32:47 - Global Expansion and Language Integration39:00 - Awareness and Refashioning Thoughts42:24 - Challenging Negative Beliefs43:58 - The Power of Asking Questions44:49 - Seeking Truth through Questions46:04 - Repetition and Subconscious Change49:11 - Call to Action and Community Building___________Kimberly Wilkerson, a former speech language pathologist turned entrepreneur and the visionary behind intelligent fashion at token clothing company. When Jena was first getting started, there were no online education programs specifically for SLP and OTs going into private practice, so she created the programs she wished she had. Jena has been invited to speak at local and national ASHA conferences; she's spoken on the topics of starting and growing private practices, marketing, and entrepreneurship. You can hear Jena every week as the host of the Private Practice Success Stories podcast, and you can hang out with her on all social media platforms. Jena lives in Newton, Massachusetts, with her wife, Sarah, and their two sons, Hayes and Holden. Get in touch with Jena: Website: https://www.IndependentClinician.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/independentClinician Podcast: Private Practice Success Stories: https://independentclinician.com/podcast-blog/ Freebie: Private Practice Roadmap www.startyourprivatepractice.com/freebie Purchase: The Path to Private Practice by Jena Castro-Casbon: https://amzn.to/4c5bivs Disclaimer: Delightful reads are recommended here with potential affiliate links.
