The sounds of our youth, immortalized on audio tape. Get embarrassed with us. Submissions, contributions, and complaints: lostandrewound@radiofreebrooklyn.org.
It was meant to end this way. Elann takes a recorder with him on the go, firstly to get his second COVID vaccination shot, and on the way there he encounters some rather unsavory characters. Later, he pays a visit to Ryan Reich, gives Brooks Rocco a call, and then makes a deliberate visit to Manhattan for his first time since lockdown to meet up with former L&R producer Doug Johnson. Parenthood looms as another childhood is about to begin.
Elann went to back to Bushwick for two reasons: 1. Check out Radio Free Brooklyn's brand new studio for the first (and subsequently last) time with fellow RFB stablemate and former L&R guest Calvin Williams as board operator, and 2. Conduct a long sought after interview with Denman C Anderson of Semita Serpens and Statiqbloom. Featured clips include an excerpt of "The Sun Peering Into You," a recent Semita Serpens offering, an excerpt of "The Devil's Clock As It Strikes Midnight," a decade old ambient horror improvisation, and an untitled four-on-the-floor banger Denman created specifically for the show and performed live in the studio. statiqbloom.bandcamp.com newyorkhaunted.bandcamp.com
Eli and Saul Jacobowitz are cousins of Elann. During their respective college days, the brothers made very different types of music and occasionally collaborated, specifically with Saul's band American Head. A few select cuts are played from that catalog, hand picked by Eli who also shared a taste of his own former project Subcontinents (more can be heard at subcontinents.bandcamp.com). Later, Elann unveils sounds from a 1988 family reunion.
Get ready for another blast into the analog past by way of Elann's CD collection circa 1996, featuring none other than 13 year old Elann playing DJ for this edition. (editor's note - 30 seconds in, keep an ear out for my parents.)
After a three year absence from L&R, Jimmy Hoffman returns one last time to offer his special helping of funny that made the show what it was for so long. This clipless in-depth conversation also gave Jimmy the chance to - open up about his own preparation into fatherhood, reflect on his first time performing in drag, and clear the air with Elann. Will and Rachel played a wonderful April Fool's joke on Elann by enlisting a handful of previous guests and friends of the show to surprise him with a Zoom call for what is definitely *not* the last episode of Lost & Rewound but certainly felt like it. Featuring Cerian, Tim Dowd, Olivia Whelan, Noah DeBiase, Timmy Daniels, and Kevin Jones, who composed quite the special intro. *This episode was edited by Will!*
In the hot seat this week is Will's kid brother Sam! This conversation was truly a while in the making. We got a chance to learn about Sam's unlikely yet fulfilling professional path, taking him from Memphis, TN, all the way to Poland, and to his current digs in Vancouver, BC, where he's been based since getting stuck there at the start of the pandemic. There was also some time to uncover some truly adorable sounds of a 3 year old Sam from the early 90's.
Elann surprises wife Robin on their unofficial anniversary and official "meetiversary" by setting up a rather impromptu Zoom recording from their kitchen featuring friends, family, and Rachel Teichman (who, evidtently, is both). A rousing evening roundtable includes stories of cats, alcohol, and memories of E+R.
Elann reunited virtually with his karaoke komrade Jack Dourakos to learn more about Jack's time as ring announcer Gavin Loudspeaker in the indie wrestling world. In addition to all the wrasslin' talk, we also get brief glimpses into Jack's early life in Baltimore, his new life in L.A., and his recent resurgence back into music. Stick around later for a long overdue duet. (editor's note - since the recording of this episode Jack has found and released the entirety of his old band's material here on Souncloud - @jack-dourakos)
It's time to get awkward with us! For this rather unusual episode recorded right around Valentine's Day, the crew is joined by actor/writer/comedian Laura Merli! We get the inside scoop on Laura's pre-comedy involvements before transitioning into some angsty college-age writing! Featured are an entry from Laura's diary, a few of Rachel's poems, a brief glimpse into Elann's web journal, and some well placed musical interludes (courtesy of Bleachers and The Push Stars). Follow Laura @passiveabrasive on Twitter, Instagram, and Tik Tok.
MC Days (formerly 12:51, RacecaR) and DJ Jostereo are a Paris, France based hip-hop duo who go by the name LRS (aka Living Room Soundsystem). Elann woke up very early in the morning to conduct this interview solo and highlight their new EP entitled "Thoughts." Days and Jo dish out some highs, some lows, and some uptempo cuts from the early 10's that will leave the listener "stirringly & hopefully, shakingly awakening." Check out @thisisdoombap here on Soundcloud and check out the full LRS discography at lrs1.bandcamp.com (RIP Double K)
New Jersey-based songwriter and former scenester Orry Benavides has a lot of thoughts, and a lot of those thoughts have been made into songs. Some of these thoughts ended up as a series of fiction novels Orry penned for a couple of years, but the spotlight for this hour is on his fourteen year music project Placeholder Confidential. Equipped with songs old and new (including a clip of one bonus demo we didn't have time to cover during the recording), Orry takes the crew of Will, Rachel, and Elann on a voyage into many a topic, including pastiche shoegaze, nautical themes, and a possum sighting.
Hailing from Tucson, AZ, Golden Alphabet frontman Tommy Cormier has now officially been a NYC resident for 10 years. Tommy joins Will and Elann for this go-around to share sounds from his youth, wax nostalgic about cold weather camping, and shed some light on his religious upbringing. Make sure to check out Golden Alphabet's new EP available on Bandcamp - goldenalphabet.bandcamp.com.
Rachel and Elann are joined by the majestically long haired singer-songwriter Eddy Marshall to chat about creating music during the pandemic, his proficiency in multiple instruments, and his love of hockey. Along with the playing of his newest single "Gabby," Eddy also treats us to a few early efforts that showcase a lower vocal register, a lyrical cross stitch, and some previously unreleased electronic pop. For all things Eddy, check out eddymarshall.com.
Friend and frequent past guest Matt Finch has been busy lately. When he isn't making music utilizing AI, he's developing something called "Cancelbot" with fellow collaborator Jared Wright. For this first episode of 2021, Jared joins Elann and Rachel to listen to Matt's AI audio, as well as a few choice compositions from Matt's archives, which can be heard at moth.bandcamp.com or slashsound.bandcamp.com.
The final episode for the year serves up a couple of different directions in retrospective! First up is Will, who highlights some of his favorite moments and stories from the first three months of the year, including right about when New York's lockdown had begun! Elann takes over the second half with another quintessential clip collage soundtracked with an "In Memoriam" megamix, featuring favorite show submissions and plenty of flaming banter, terrible dad jokes, and very animated laughter.

Improv teacher, comedian, and video maker Josh Telson returns to the show to bring Elann up to speed, along with Rachel and Will, about life out in Berlin during a pandemic. Alongside a plethora of topics discussed, a healthy smattering of reminiscing can be expected as Josh and Elann go back over three decades. A couple more sounds from Elann's 8th birthday party are played! Check Josh's work out at joshtelson.com.
Off we go into the world of Rachel's older brother, Jeff, for this special Thanksgiving 2020 edition. Now based in Pueblo, CO, Jeff even manages to socially distance from the computer screen as he gives us the inside scoop on his love of video games, the playful contention he keeps with his sister, and how dropping out of college ultimately worked out really well for him. Later, Jeff gets to experience home movie footage for the first time in well over a decade, and Rachel gets some bad news about a pet hamster.
A humble human by the name of Wizard Brain (aka Bobby Kirner) joins Rachel and Elann for some conversation about a smattering of topics, such as their NJ upbringing, and what three songs they would play to clear out a bar. Along with their most recent single "Here We Go," Bobby also provides us with some very chill vibes courtesy of a handful of delightful demos, including one about a space whale. wizardbrain.bandcamp.com
This hour of L&R is devoted to the phenomenal sounds of Kingston, NY based trio @Amityames, featuring an in-depth interview with singer/guitarist Lindsay Rubin! Lindsay joins a solo Elann this week to share stories of her early years as the daughter of musicians, counting her atheistic blessings while overcoming anxiety, and pulling inspiration from Elliott Smith. Featured later in the show are early to mid 10's tunes that Lindsay recorded, including one under the name L.E. Rubin that could have used, in her words, "a fucking metronome." Follow Amity on Bandcamp, Spotify, or right here on Souncloud!
Along with musician, other relevant titles for Becca Beberaggi include fine artist, actor, writer, producer, and above all, storyteller. On this edition, Becca wasted no time giving Will and Elann an inside look into her recent move away from New York, navigating physical and emotional obstacles early in life, and taking refuge at a nunnery. Later on, Becca shares two songs she made with her now fiance under the group name Bless Mob, and even plays two new compositions from the world of @RoselinaAlbinosings. Biblical! (TW: Domestic & verbal abuse)
Treating Rachel and Elann with some sharp and clever sounds from the past for this unofficial Halloween episode is professional provacateur Kaytlin Bailey! Alongside an excerpt from her first solo show "Cuntagious," a couple of highlights from a stand-up set, recorded during Kaytlin's road comic days, are shared and dissected. The centerpiece for this hour though is most assuredly sex work, the oldest (and spookiest) profession - Kaytlin has a brilliant podcast about that, which you can support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/oldpro.
Michael Wagner has been through quite the ringer. Thankfully, he's in a great place now, both emotionally and geographically speaking; he's based in Denver, CO now making music under the name Letters to Her. On this hour of L&R, LtR joins Rachel, Will, and Elann for a listening session of previously unreleased tracks, and bootleg documentation of that time he performed for three thousand people in his hometown. (editor's note: TW-Conversion Therapy) Listen to the "4 Days" EP and more Letters to Her music on Soundcloud, for starters - https://soundcloud.com/user-726815322
Elann is joined by Bay Area-based art rock duo Grex (Karl Evangelista & Rei Scampavia), fresh off organizing their third Lockdown Festival and releasing their newest album, "Everything You Said Was Wrong." Feeling in a more retrospective mood with a decade of work under their belts, a heavy hand of past Grex material is sprinkled throughout the hour dating back from as early as 2009 when Rei and Karl were both studying at Mills College. Themes include a haunted hotel, a prehistoric swamp, and beetles that love burned wood, just to name only a few. Check out the whole Grex discography at grex.bandcamp.com, or follow them on Soundcloud at @grexsounds.
A fixture in the Brooklyn open mic scene, California kid Sam Rosen sits down for a discussion with Elann about hitting the streets to protest, being a textbook Scorpio, and "baby's first busk". In lieu of clips, Sam opted to instead play a handful of compositions that were originally recorded as voice memos, while they were attending Sarah Lawrence College. Featuring 3 different guitars and a brand new song called "Rats on the Tracks". RIP Johnny Nash. And finally, donate to www.theokraproject.com.
Brothers Mike and Mark Rinzel of the group Est X have been collaborating since their formative years, and have the recordings to prove it! On this edition, Rachel and Elann are treated to the sounds of "baby punk" in 1985, courtesy of the Rinzels' first band Establishment X. Also played, some choice cuts from previous projects Poolsville from 1999, and Miguel & The Ocean Swell from 2012. Est X's new single "Videodrone," is also played later, and can be found on the terrific LP "Strange Times," available on Bandcamp or wherever you get your music. http://estx.bandcamp.com
We're pulling the curtain this go-around on none other than a woman named Meghan Pulles, who in seven short years since moving to New York from Florida has made amazing strides in re-establishing her artistry. Her songs are meant to uplift and cast a positive light, so naturally listening to her early 20's work provided an equally positive retrospective. Along with these songs three which are filled with all the feels, newer songs are also played! This includes "Freedom" which is featured on "Demos for a Difference," a benefit for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. (RIP to Breonna Taylor - please note the five seconds of silence towards the beginning of the program) Check out Meghan here on Soundcloud - soundcloud.com/meghanpulles
"Upstate New York City" based one man band Scott Making Cents (né Scott Greenberg) Zoomed in with L&R to discuss dogs in profile pictures, making the most out of the writing process in his tiny bubble, and bread. Later, we are treated to more impressionable and aged fare in the form of a mid-00's pop punk ditty, and some EDM which in this instance stands for "Epic Dianetics Magic." Pun times were had. Check out Scott here at soundcloud.com/scottmakingcents. (RIP to both Toots Hibbert & Ronald Bell - homages within)
A long time in the making! Radio Free Brooklyn's very own Calvin Williams, curator/host for the weekly two hour journey "Lush Vibes Radio" (Tuesdays from 11p-1a on RFB) makes his first appearance on L&R to share a handful of songs made in the early to mid-00's. An accomplished musician in his own right but with no classical training, Calvin dishes out some Sonic The Hedgehog and Final Fantasy VII vibes in earlier compositions before bringing out the goods in the form of a wild drum & bass track and a simply polished deep house cut.
Our unofficial 200th broadcast for Radio Free Brooklyn! August birthday babies Will Hasty (8/3) and Rachel Teichman (8/24) join Elann for this celebratory episode, featuring the sounds of 4 year old Rachel and the words of a middle school aged Will. Later they are gifted with a few of Elann's problematic scripts written when he was 23, which are read alongside surprise guest Katherine Grant.
Australian singer-songwriter Mel Kay chats with Elann about her beginnings in performance and composition and shares both tracks old and new! Plus Mel comes clean about her past health scares, unexpected divine intervention, and her Finnish roots.
Daniel Durst and Prawit Siriwat perform improvised experimental music under the name Wit & Daniel, and their new album, Vol 2, is one hell of a journey. Also one hell of a journey - The pair of contributions Wit & Daniel provided to the show from their respective high school years! Elann's brain nearly explodes a couple of times and Rachel remains on fire, due in part to Wit's DIY progressive metal and a song about pendulums, as well as Daniel's opus complete with glockenspiel, finger pianos, and robot doo wop. Listen to more their current material at witanddaniel.bandcamp.com or follow Wit here on Soundcloud - @prawitmusic
Marking the largest group of guests in one episode, six members of Ithaca NY based octet Quail virtually sit in with Elann and Rachel for their first radio show appearance! After talking about the pandemic's effect on the band and listening to the refreshing sounds of new single "Crazy," founding member & bassist Anna Young shares a couple of epic high school performances and vocalist Madison Carroll shares a couple of spell binding untitled side tracks, making for a very proactive listening session and truly a quail of a time for everyone.
Singer/songwriter/producer Sarah Cobb goes by the stage name ESS SEE and has been grinding on the NYC music scene for just about a decade. For this edition of L&R, Elann goes one-on-one through Zoom to get to the nitty gritty about Sarah's southern upbringing, trying on something new during quarantine time, and the remarkable stories behind early recordings that also get played such as - some truly David Lynch-ian country karaoke, a badass kiss off to a lecherous man, and an infectious electro pop ditty from the late '00s. ESS SEE's new single "Overdrive" is available on all relevant platforms and the video should be viewed as well! https://youtu.be/93t1iW5TIPk
Unlike what the title of this episode might suggest, our guests this week are in fact young and very reliable. They are The Water Dogs, a trio of siblings who make beautiful folk music and found some time to chat with Elann and Rachel about their upbringing, subsequent influences, and how they came to be! Featured here are songs that are old and songs that are new, and we also learn how an otherwise accepting music scene out in Buffalo, NY eventually had to cancel America (the band).
Featured on this hour from singer-songwriter/actor Marguerite Stern are something old, something new, something borrowed, and then a song from the musical Rent (as done at Hastings High School back in the mid 00's)which blew us all away. A whole lot of raw flaming energy here! Stick around for the novel attempt at a guitar-recorder jam session through Zoom. You can check out Marguerite's current material on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/margueritestern) or Bandcamp (http://margueritestern.bandcamp.com).
Rachel and Elann return to The REC Room for a social distance experiment with gloves, mask, and "Game Play Radio" host Eryn Levine joining in virtually! Eryn shares some old home movie footage, a wintry choir solo, and later we go vlogging as well as learn how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. Check out Game Play Radio on RFB every Sunday from 2-3p, and check here for all episodes - https://radiofreebrooklyn.com/show/game-play-radio
Featuring excerpts of interviews and songs from Marcus Jade, Tyree Rush, Louis Logic, and Trumpet Wom'. Fuck the Police. Arrest the President. Black Lives Matter.
More than just another ghost episode! Originally released on Halloween as "The Spookiest," the original contents were lost during a computer crash, but had otherwise remained in a certain cluster of VHS tapes from Elann's childhood until they were once again given a new life. Featuring extra letters, numbers, chases, stories, songs, food, and a whole lot of editing mastery that begs the question, was it really worth all the trouble?
For this edition, Rachel provides more home movie footage and Will shares high school journal entries of which Elann and Rachel *try to* read aloud. Elann provides the gang with an alias generator, continues to uncover his unfunny origins, and later reveals himself in his most vulnerable teenage state - waking up. Happy 5 years to Radio Free Brooklyn!
Brooklyn's very own Madeline Enlow is back on RFB! She is also joined (later) by her friend Piera Goldstein. The two of them used to live together among several others at a faux-commune in Staten Island, and also found some time to goof off a lot on camera. Also in this episode - Will gets called out for voting for Hilary in the 2016 primary, Rachel contemplates joining a commune herself, and Elann reposes the question, "What Would Save The World?"
Sibling shows unite! Besties Emily Scott & Jamie Lerner host Middle School Happy Hour, a Thursday night music show on RFB that is akin to our program in more ways than just one. Clips featured on this hour include some adorable captures of Jamie's childhood visits to her grandparents, and Emily's AP History video project on Henry VIII. We also talk about transitions from middle school to high school, listen to some truly delightful 90's jams, and later we bear witness to a teenage Jamie's musical theater chops.
After hearing about Poughkeepsie Day School's alleged closure, Elann sprung into action and reached out to Noah DeBiase, a friend with whom he shared both the stage and a classroom growing up. Noah fills us in on his beginnings in acting and his current life as a successful voiceover artist & teacher, plus we get a glimpse into his contributions to the PDS Original Musicals, specifically the 2001 production of "Guest Appearances," which happened to see Noah and Elann playing opposite one another. Will is genuinely fascinated, and Rachel is, as always, flaming with rants. *Featuring songs from 1999's "Life on Earth" all throughout!*
From the town of Heswall, located on the northwest coast of England, in the Wirral peninsula, one single cassette tape was shipped across the Atlantic from Daniel Cambridge to cousin Elann. The contents of this tape are played for our rewound table after much discussion into Daniel's roles as actor, drama teacher, and loving father of teenagers. We also get a glimpse into a family holiday captured in the summer of 1989.
These days, Tom Ashton is both acting on the small screen and going the solo route (tomashton.com). His previous music iterations paint a very vivid picture, as the gang is treated to Early Edison stories, power pop anthems, and the rockingest version of "Mister Roger's Neighborhood" you've never heard because a famous Hollywood producer "devitoed" it. That joke was a missed opportunity. (Not a missed opportunity however - some of the interludes are homages to Bill Withers and John Prine, both RIP.) At any rate, thanks to Tom for giving us a ton of great songs to play!
You can't spell "teacher" without the "tea", and both of those apply to our guest Jon Reid! Normally heard on RFB every Saturday from from 10-11a as host of the widely popular "Race to the Bottom," Jon joins Elann and Rachel to share some high school "jambandery" courtesy of Equally Blue. Later, Jon, unleashes his inner bedroom producer with two delightful hip-hop tracks he recorded, plus a previously unreleased b-side from his days performing as Jar-E. (editor's note - since this recording, Jon announced that an album of new songs, "Amazed in a Way," will be released very soon!)*Interludes throughout this episode courtesy of Fountains of Wayne - RIP Adam Schlesinger
New York is officially quarantining, so Elann sets the stage for the weeks to come before his lively Zoom session commences, featuring Will, Rachel, and Rachel's cousin and classically trained musician, Josh November. Once upon a time Josh was as a bassist with a rock trio, so most memorable show stories are shared! We're later treated to childhood sounds from 1995, as well as an excerpt from a middle school mockumentary that is nothing but swishy hoopty doopty. Follow Josh on Instagram and let him teach you guitar : @joshnovember
Will wears gloves, Rachel wears a Pikachu onesie, and Elann provides the disinfectant wipes for this extra sanitized edition of L&R! Lower East Side based and Long Island born musician Adam Howard Schneider (aka @digitalfatigue) calls in to discuss and share some early recordings, including one of the ska punk variety. Adam also shares an epic drug story, and later, performs an over-the-phone duet with his wife.
Both Rachel and Will make good on their promises to share their own early writings, and Olivia Whelan returns once again to share one of hers as well! Featuring a short story about Barbie and Ken's relationship, a portion of the draft to a very moody stage play, and hair erotica.
