The State Funeral has come to be known as the traditional and ceremonial way to mourn a President of the United States. While throughout the nation's history not every Commander in Chief has opted for such a tribute, in the modern era, it has become common practice. In fact, discussions about a president's preferences as to how they will be honored after their death take place almost as soon as they take office.  Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, sat down with two individuals who had a hand in the planning and performance of these national events: Michael Wagner, the former Chief of National Event Planning for Joint Task Force - National Capital Region, and Retired Major General Galen B. Jackman, former Commander of the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington.  Maj. Gen. Jackman became a familiar face as he personally escorted former First Lady Nancy Reagan through the events of President Ronald Reagan's State Funeral. President Reagan's funeral set the standard for what we expect to see today, with ceremonies held at a former president's place of residence, events in Washington, D.C., and then the final burial…all taking place in a span of 7 to 10 days. We were privileged to see that take place again in January 2025 for former President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president in history.  Those who serve in the JTF-NCR and Military District of Washington help keep the nation's capital safe, honor each presidency from Inauguration to their final passing, as well as perform other ceremonial duties across the country and around the world. This is a rare opportunity to hear the personal stories of two people who served their nation with the utmost professionalism and patriotism.

Alberta contributes the lion's share of Canada's oil and natural-gas production, serving as a cornerstone of the national economy. A massive portion of the Alberta economy, however, is confiscated by the federal government in Ottawa to fund redistribution programs. The chief reason behind the case for a sovereign Alberta is the structural impossibility of reform within Canada. This means that, no matter how distinct Alberta might be from the rest of Canada, there is no hope of an end to the pillaging and alien governance from Ottawa. The inspiration for this episode came from an unexpected source - none other than Sebastian Bach of Skid Row fame. During a brief interview with , Sebastian shared a gem with us, recommending that we explore Malice's debut album. Sebastian is a genuine fan of rock and metal, so we were all excited for a deep dive exploration of a band that played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Skid Row and the 80s metal scene. The year was 1985. Metal was at a crossroads, evolving from its British heavy metal roots while flirting with the glitz and glam of the Sunset Strip. Bands like Judas Priest and Van Halen were experimenting with synthesizers, and the lines between hard rock and glam metal were becoming increasingly blurred. Enter Malice, a band that straddled these worlds, bringing a raw, aggressive energy that set them apart.Help make the next episode happen. Join the DMO Union!Malice formed in Portland, Oregon, a city not typically known for its metal scene. They quickly made a name for themselves with their powerful sound and dynamic performances. By 1982, they were sharing stages with the likes of Metallica and Armored Saint, and their tracks were featured on the influential Metal Massacre compilation alongside future giants of the genre.Malice's debut album, "In the Beginning," released in August 1985, is a testament to their unique position in the metal world. The album was co-produced by the legendary Michael Wagner, known for his work with Skid Row and Ozzy Osbourne, and Ashley Howe. This collaboration brought a polished yet powerful sound to the record, one that resonated with the intensity of live performances. The lineup for the album included James Neal on vocals, Mick Zane and Jay Reynolds on lead guitars, Mark Behn on bass, and Clifford Carruthers on drums. The band's chemistry is evident throughout the album, with each member bringing a distinct energy that collectively created a sound both raw and refined."In the Beginning" is an album of contrasts, showcasing the band's versatility and struggle for a cohesive identity. Tracks like "Air Attack" and "Gods of Thunder" highlight their power metal prowess, with soaring vocals and relentless double-kick drumming. James Neal's vocal performance draws inevitable comparisons to Rob Halford of Judas Priest, especially on tracks like "Stellar Masters" and "Hellrider."Yet, the album also dips into more mainstream, glam-rock territory with songs like "Rockin' With You" and "Squeeze It Dry." These tracks, while energetic, lack the same punch as their power metal counterparts, revealing the band's attempt to balance commercial appeal with their heavier roots.Despite its uneven reception, "In the Beginning" holds a special place in the annals of 80s metal. It served as an inspiration for many, including Sebastian Bach, who cited it as an influential record for Skid Row's early sound. The album's production quality, particularly the clarity and punch of Wagner's work, set a standard for future metal recordings.Malice may not have achieved the commercial success of their peers, but their impact is undeniable. They were a band ahead of their time, caught between the shifting tides of metal's evolution. Their music continues to resonate with those who seek the raw, unfiltered energy that defined 80s metal.Songs in this episode* Open - Stellar Masters* 19:48 - Air Attack* 21:19 - Hell Rider* 25:43 - Rockin With You* 27:55 - No Haven for the Raven* 30:34 - Squeeze It Dry (Keep on Rockin)* 32:35 - Into the Ground* 34:17 - Stellar Masters* Close - Godz of ThunderMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. During his childhood, Zamenhof developed a theory: these groups would never get along without a common, neutral language to communicate with people in the other groups. Zamenhof considered the possibility of using existing languages for this purpose—such as Latin and Greek—but decided that the cost to learn them was too high. So he invented his own.Esperanto, as Zamenhof's language came to be known, sought to take familiar Indo-European root words and cast them in a language without verb conjugations, cases, gender, or any of the elements which make a language like German or Russian so difficult to learn. He was nineteen when he first unveiled the language to the public. Zamenhof's goal was not just to create a language that was easy to learn, but to create a language that would put the different peoples of Europe on a footing of mutual disadvantage—and therefore, he hoped, equality. As far as invented languages go, Esperanto has enjoyed more success than most. You can study it on Duolingo. It's a staple of popular culture; for example, I recently saw in an episode of the TV show Billions, where it is being learned by the character Michael Wagner. But mostly, this success has been on the linguistic front. People find the language interesting. But it hasn't been especially useful as a basis for utopia. In a way, Zamenhof's Esperanto is a microcosm of the system of values more generally known as “humanism.” There are many shades of humanism, but at their core lies a belief that understanding, connection, and even mutual admiration among different kinds of people is not only possible but paramount to a meaningful life. If we could all converse with one another, understand one another—then maybe we'd stand a chance of constructing the kind of society we all want to live in.But while Esperanto embodies the aspirations of humanism, it also is emblematic of its tensions. In theory, getting people to celebrate the many ways of being human is an ideal worth striving for. In practice, it is a difficult one to achieve. When it comes to the ways of being humans, what all humans have in common is that they prefer their own.The fundamental impulse of humanism is to grapple with this tension, and it is the subject of the latest book by author Sarah Bakewell. In it, she surveys 700 years of humanist thought—with each thinker bringing a personal perspective to the shared problem of what it means to value human life and society in an abstract sense. The experience of reading Bakewell's book is to hear the echoing conversation of the ages. One of the ways of reading humanism is to see it as a means of participating in this conversation. It's a notion I think is rather beautiful. Her book is Humanly Possible: Seven Hundred Years of Humanist Freethinking, Enquiry and Hope. It's available now. This is a public episode. A unique collaboration between social scientists and Meta to conduct research on Facebook and Instagram during the height of the 2020 US election has at long last produced its first work products. The release of four peer-reviewed studies last week in Science and Nature mark the first of as many as sixteen studies that promise fresh insights into the complex dynamics of social media and public discourse. But beyond the findings of the research, the partnership between Meta and some of the most prominent researchers in the field has been held up as a model. With active discussions ongoing in multiple jurisdictions about how best to facilitate access to platform data for independent researchers, it's worth scrutinizing the strengths and weaknesses of this partnership. And to do that, Justin Hendrix is joined by one researcher who was able to observe and evaluate nearly every detail of the process for the last three years: the project's rapporteur, Michael Wagner, who in his day job is a professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Michael Wagner, co-founder and CEO of Star Atlas joins to explain how Star Atlas is using the Solana blockchain within the game's infrastructure and economy.Michael give his backstory of being a life long gamer and working in the financial sector before diving full time into crypto by founding a crypto/cannabis company called Tokes. (which is also a interesting use case for crypto payments due to common restrictions within several countries like the US)We talk about how the Star Atlas intellectual property (IP), like the in game asset, can be used by other creatives and entrepreneurs to create sizable businesses off of. Including physical merchandise, digital goods, and in game merchants. There is an application process for this, but still a very uncommon things for a large scale production like Star Atlas. (Which we think very amazing to see!)Michael describes the 3 different game “applications”, almost like individual game clients, the company is building. Each will allow players to interact with specific parts of the same on chain game data, so they are all still tied to the game.Included with all the on-chain game data is the movement system, which recently had a public stress test in the form of a mini game. Around 10k unique wallets interacted with the Escape Velocity mini game during Star Atlas' movement stress test (which resulted in around 80 million transactions over 72 days)Finally, we dive deep into the very complex digital economy being built within the game. Including several factors the company is taking into account for growing a truly sustainable economy and carefully fostering it to reach stability. This is especially interesting considering players will have the potential to have sizable monetary value participating within this economy.Links from the showStarAtlas public roadmapFind Michael and StarAtlas onlineMichael Wagner on Twitter - https://twitter.com/at_mwagnerStar Atlas on Twitter - https://twitter.com/staratlasStar Atlas' website - https://staratlas.comFollow us aroundNicktwitter: @nickfrostygithub: github.com/nickfrostywebsite: https://nick.afJamestwitter: @jamesrp13github: github.com/jamesrp13Solfate Podcasttwitter: @SolfatePodmore podcast episodes: solfate.com/podcast

Dave “The Snake” Sabo is a guitarist, songwriter and founding member of the band Skid Row. The band was formed in 1986 with bassist/songwriter Rachel Bolan and originally called Darkness. They went on to sell millions of records and tour with Guns ‘N Roses, Motley Crue, Kiss and others. Their new record “The Gang's All Here” is a return to form and bridges the gap between the first two records. We discuss the new album and working with producer Nick Raskulinecz, plus some of the old stuff, and tons of great band trivia - much of which I don't think has ever been revealed before!
