CBP is installing new AI-powered surveillance towers at the southern border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is moving forward on AI-powered autonomous surveillance towers that are expected to be deployed across the southern border, signing a $71 million task order with GDIT last week. The award is the latest in a massive indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, worth up to $1.8 billion, that kicked off three years ago and is aimed at modernizing and expanding CBP's surveillance tower system. GDIT is a key player in CBP's modernization plans as the prime contractor on a remote video surveillance program, the developer of a CBP database with quantum sensors and a fundamental part of a number of other projects including the smart border wall. Michael Wagner, VP of biometrics, border and transportation security at GDIT, told FedScoop that the company started working on this next-generation autonomous tower about three years ago and has gone through several iterations of solutioning and testing and validating out in the field. The American military deployed an autonomous Corsair maritime drone built by Saronic to find and recover two soldiers who were stranded near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday after their Army AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed during a patrol operation, U.S. Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins told DefenseScoop. The confirmation of this unique rescue mission comes as military tensions are surging in the Middle East amid the United States-Iran conflict. It marks the U.S. military's first publicized use of an autonomous surface vessel to locate and retrieve downed aircrew in real-world warfare, following years of experimentation with different types of sea drones. Hawkins said the drone used in the operation was a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel operated by U.S. 5th Fleet's Task Force 59. In that rescue operation, he told DefenseScoop, the maritime drone picked the two pilots up “and transported them to another location on the water where they were then hoisted up to a helicopter for further transport.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. This week, Jeremy and Alex had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Michael Wagner on the subject of Canada's Christian heritage and identity, along with a number of policies which have actively undermined that identity. Many Canadians, including Christians, fail to grasp just how pervasive Christianity's influence has been on Canada's values, laws, and moral imagination. Even fewer are aware of the particular ways our Christian identity has been undermined through the implementation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which was effectively the “progressive depth charge” that would go on to obliterate Christian policies and customs. We also discussed the issue of Alberta Independence, for which Dr. Wagner is a leading advocate, including the doctrine of the lesser magistrate and the moral validity and responsibility to defend one's culture. My emotions struck me during this show, since I care so much about Alberta sovereignty. To appear with Bruce Scholl of Unscrew the News and Nadine Wellwood, both people I admire, was a privilege, and I hope I provided momentum towards Alberta's noble cause.Let me provide here my own show notes: takeaways and resources. There were many more than eight to share, so I recommend people watch the full show (starting six minutes in).For those seeking mining stock recommendations, consider Adrian Day's Global Analyst newsletter. I read every edition, and I have negotiated a 10 percent discount for my readers. Use the FERG coupon code at AdrianDayGlobalAnalyst.com, or call +1 410-224-8885.* The path to a successful referendum cannot be rushed. There needs to be sufficient education and cultivated support before the vote.* Albertans are profoundly distinct from Canadians (although Saskatchewanians are similar to Albertans). Insults hurled at Albertans, in an attempt to intimidate them, only demonstrate the fact that we are not the same. Although I was not raised in Alberta, Calgary is my family home on my mother's side, and it is where my grandmother and many other relatives remain.* Bought-off regime media are not to be trusted. They are enemies of journalism and free thought, and we must continue to promote citizen journalism, such as Unscrew the News, and independent formal outlets such as the Western Standard.* Alberta independence must be a broad movement and will have to go through one of the major parties. My personal view is the United Conservative Party, with the right membership, can be that vehicle. The People's Party and the Libertarian Party, although upholding great ideas, have demonstrated the nigh impossible task of starting a successful new party without wasting resources and creating more enemies.* Ottawa loyalists will attempt to impose many roadblocks before the independence movement. These include throwing policy bones to soften sentiments, demonization via regime media and education, and overflowing the province with new arrivals to dilute support.* The right to bear arms is a litmus test of self-rule. It is a policy that sets Albertans apart, since they have a strong sense that they should be able to defend themselves and not wait for momma government to save them.* The referendum will succeed on provincial pride: the flag, the history, the shared values, the pioneer way of life. While the economic case for Alberta independence is overwhelming, the distinct identity will move hearts. An important case study is the Brexit campaign, which overcame the unwillingness of the UK political class to leave the European Union. The best book on this, that I know of, is All Out War: The Full Story of How Brexit Sank Britain's Political Class.* Albertans face two options: (1) remain straitjacketed in a parasitic Canada on the decline or (2) leave and forge their own path. The latter will stem from a rugged individualism that is alien to contemporary Canada. The Albertan psyche has a combination of classical liberalism, social conservatism, rural get-up-and-go, and entrepreneurial spirit. There is robust intellectual backing for Alberta independence. In particular, I recommend following:* the Haultain Research Institute;* the Alberta Prosperity Project;* Cory Morgan;* Michael Wagner. While I have only just started it, Nadine Wellwood's book, Alberta Rising, is now available on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.If you would like to book a consultation with me, please sign up here. The State Funeral has come to be known as the traditional and ceremonial way to mourn a President of the United States. While throughout the nation's history not every Commander in Chief has opted for such a tribute, in the modern era, it has become common practice. In fact, discussions about a president's preferences as to how they will be honored after their death take place almost as soon as they take office.  Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, sat down with two individuals who had a hand in the planning and performance of these national events: Michael Wagner, the former Chief of National Event Planning for Joint Task Force - National Capital Region, and Retired Major General Galen B. Jackman, former Commander of the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington.  Maj. Gen. Jackman became a familiar face as he personally escorted former First Lady Nancy Reagan through the events of President Ronald Reagan's State Funeral. President Reagan's funeral set the standard for what we expect to see today, with ceremonies held at a former president's place of residence, events in Washington, D.C., and then the final burial…all taking place in a span of 7 to 10 days. We were privileged to see that take place again in January 2025 for former President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president in history.  Those who serve in the JTF-NCR and Military District of Washington help keep the nation's capital safe, honor each presidency from Inauguration to their final passing, as well as perform other ceremonial duties across the country and around the world. This is a rare opportunity to hear the personal stories of two people who served their nation with the utmost professionalism and patriotism.

The inspiration for this episode came from an unexpected source - none other than Sebastian Bach of Skid Row fame. During a brief interview with , Sebastian shared a gem with us, recommending that we explore Malice's debut album. Sebastian is a genuine fan of rock and metal, so we were all excited for a deep dive exploration of a band that played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Skid Row and the 80s metal scene. The year was 1985. Metal was at a crossroads, evolving from its British heavy metal roots while flirting with the glitz and glam of the Sunset Strip. Bands like Judas Priest and Van Halen were experimenting with synthesizers, and the lines between hard rock and glam metal were becoming increasingly blurred. Enter Malice, a band that straddled these worlds, bringing a raw, aggressive energy that set them apart.Help make the next episode happen. Join the DMO Union!Malice formed in Portland, Oregon, a city not typically known for its metal scene. They quickly made a name for themselves with their powerful sound and dynamic performances. By 1982, they were sharing stages with the likes of Metallica and Armored Saint, and their tracks were featured on the influential Metal Massacre compilation alongside future giants of the genre.Malice's debut album, "In the Beginning," released in August 1985, is a testament to their unique position in the metal world. The album was co-produced by the legendary Michael Wagner, known for his work with Skid Row and Ozzy Osbourne, and Ashley Howe. This collaboration brought a polished yet powerful sound to the record, one that resonated with the intensity of live performances. The lineup for the album included James Neal on vocals, Mick Zane and Jay Reynolds on lead guitars, Mark Behn on bass, and Clifford Carruthers on drums. The band's chemistry is evident throughout the album, with each member bringing a distinct energy that collectively created a sound both raw and refined."In the Beginning" is an album of contrasts, showcasing the band's versatility and struggle for a cohesive identity. Tracks like "Air Attack" and "Gods of Thunder" highlight their power metal prowess, with soaring vocals and relentless double-kick drumming. James Neal's vocal performance draws inevitable comparisons to Rob Halford of Judas Priest, especially on tracks like "Stellar Masters" and "Hellrider."Yet, the album also dips into more mainstream, glam-rock territory with songs like "Rockin' With You" and "Squeeze It Dry." These tracks, while energetic, lack the same punch as their power metal counterparts, revealing the band's attempt to balance commercial appeal with their heavier roots.Despite its uneven reception, "In the Beginning" holds a special place in the annals of 80s metal. It served as an inspiration for many, including Sebastian Bach, who cited it as an influential record for Skid Row's early sound. The album's production quality, particularly the clarity and punch of Wagner's work, set a standard for future metal recordings.Malice may not have achieved the commercial success of their peers, but their impact is undeniable. They were a band ahead of their time, caught between the shifting tides of metal's evolution. Their music continues to resonate with those who seek the raw, unfiltered energy that defined 80s metal.Songs in this episode* Open - Stellar Masters* 19:48 - Air Attack* 21:19 - Hell Rider* 25:43 - Rockin With You* 27:55 - No Haven for the Raven* 30:34 - Squeeze It Dry (Keep on Rockin)* 32:35 - Into the Ground* 34:17 - Stellar Masters* Close - Godz of ThunderMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. Michael sheds light on how this nascent industry is developing new insurance solutions that address the unique challenges of AVs, while incentivizing safe practices and fostering trust.

Ludwik Zamenhof was born in 1859 in a small city in Poland. His family was Jewish, and the area he grew up in also had factions of Germans, Russians, and Poles, all of whom mutually distrusted one another. During his childhood, Zamenhof developed a theory: these groups would never get along without a common, neutral language to communicate with people in the other groups. Zamenhof considered the possibility of using existing languages for this purpose—such as Latin and Greek—but decided that the cost to learn them was too high. So he invented his own.Esperanto, as Zamenhof's language came to be known, sought to take familiar Indo-European root words and cast them in a language without verb conjugations, cases, gender, or any of the elements which make a language like German or Russian so difficult to learn. He was nineteen when he first unveiled the language to the public. Zamenhof's goal was not just to create a language that was easy to learn, but to create a language that would put the different peoples of Europe on a footing of mutual disadvantage—and therefore, he hoped, equality. As far as invented languages go, Esperanto has enjoyed more success than most. You can study it on Duolingo. It's a staple of popular culture; for example, I recently saw in an episode of the TV show Billions, where it is being learned by the character Michael Wagner. But mostly, this success has been on the linguistic front. People find the language interesting. But it hasn't been especially useful as a basis for utopia. In a way, Zamenhof's Esperanto is a microcosm of the system of values more generally known as “humanism.” There are many shades of humanism, but at their core lies a belief that understanding, connection, and even mutual admiration among different kinds of people is not only possible but paramount to a meaningful life. If we could all converse with one another, understand one another—then maybe we'd stand a chance of constructing the kind of society we all want to live in.But while Esperanto embodies the aspirations of humanism, it also is emblematic of its tensions. In theory, getting people to celebrate the many ways of being human is an ideal worth striving for. In practice, it is a difficult one to achieve. When it comes to the ways of being humans, what all humans have in common is that they prefer their own.The fundamental impulse of humanism is to grapple with this tension, and it is the subject of the latest book by author Sarah Bakewell. In it, she surveys 700 years of humanist thought—with each thinker bringing a personal perspective to the shared problem of what it means to value human life and society in an abstract sense. The experience of reading Bakewell's book is to hear the echoing conversation of the ages. One of the ways of reading humanism is to see it as a means of participating in this conversation. It's a notion I think is rather beautiful. Her book is Humanly Possible: Seven Hundred Years of Humanist Freethinking, Enquiry and Hope. It's available now. This is a public episode. A unique collaboration between social scientists and Meta to conduct research on Facebook and Instagram during the height of the 2020 US election has at long last produced its first work products. The release of four peer-reviewed studies last week in Science and Nature mark the first of as many as sixteen studies that promise fresh insights into the complex dynamics of social media and public discourse. But beyond the findings of the research, the partnership between Meta and some of the most prominent researchers in the field has been held up as a model. With active discussions ongoing in multiple jurisdictions about how best to facilitate access to platform data for independent researchers, it's worth scrutinizing the strengths and weaknesses of this partnership. And to do that, Justin Hendrix is joined by one researcher who was able to observe and evaluate nearly every detail of the process for the last three years: the project's rapporteur, Michael Wagner, who in his day job is a professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
