To find the true essence of Florida you must be willing to travel it's backroads, coastal regions and swamps to immerse yourself deep within it's communities. That's just what author Tyler Gillespie did. In his latest book "The Thing About Florida" – Gillespie journeys to unexpected places such as halfway houses, gator pits, rattlesnake rooms, and clothing-optional campgrounds, where he meets eclectic and unconventional Floridians. He talks about his interviews with storm chasers, Civil War re-enactors, cattle ranchers, drag queens, python hunters, and pet smugglers in his quest to explore our misunderstood state. And if that's not weird enough, we look into the story of a snake-handling preacher, who spread this venomous gospel throughout Florida to deadly results. Then from the pages of Weird Florida, we read about Cassadaga, The Psychic Capitol of the World.
We all know a “Florida Man”, but how many of us want to admit to being one? In The Thing About Florida, author Tyler Gillespie takes on the strange people and stories of the Sunshine State from the perspective of a fifth-generation Florida native. Gillespie joins us to talk about what he discovered in his quest to learn more about the state we all call home. Tyler Gillespie is a fifth-generation Floridian who went to undergrad at the University of Central Florida and did a master's program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. He quarantined with his grandmother in Largo (near Clearwater) for the past year. Like many of us, Tyler Gillespie was hooked once he discovered the joy of remote, online work. Tyler dove in headfirst and moved to Costa Rica selling vacation rentals online (while he lived in one himself) and this officially kicked off working while traveling abroad.Since working inside the rental industry didn't lend itself to remote work as well as he'd of liked, Tyler shifted into freelance work. From there he was able to find clients, outsource work, and eventually build a proper team that became his marketing agency, Gingerbread Marketing. As the company was able to automate and standardize more processes, while shifting into more of a niche category, content creation, Gingerbread Marketing became Content Pros. That standardization and automation was productization, and it allowed Tyler to work very few hours since the business practically ran itself. This makes for a valuable, sellable business and Tyler walks us through it all. Some of the big takeaways of this episode are here: Remote work makes traveling abroad an option which leads to many great opportunitiesThe journey from freelancer to running an agency to selling and then consultingHow to make a service scale-able where revenue is consistentA powerful morning routine called "SAVERS"Be sure to follow Tyler online at ProductizeMyService.com, LinkedIn, and The Facebook Productize CommunityHave questions? Then, as we shift into a conversation about Applause Lab, his current business venture, we’ll walk you through his experience with how the launching and execution went rather quickly. Join Tyler Gillespie (Productized Snacks) and Jaclyn Schiff as they talk about her company PodReacher and the events that led to her offering her services. PodReacher helps podcasts extend their reach by repurposing their content specifically for text. Tyler and Jaclyn also get into the difference of her services from transcription and her plans going into a period where people are staying at home. Stay tuned to Productized Snacks! *Differences with Transcripts and Why You Should Choose Articles* The service they provide is very different from a transcription service. PodReacher takes the best lines of a podcast and organizes them into a cohesive article containing all the relevant points. For Jaclyn it’s a more meaningful piece of content than putting transcripts upfront. While there are benefits to having a transcript, such as accessibility for people hard of hearing, on a marketing perspective, it’s much more powerful to have an article. Articles can also help podcasts with SEO and get their show in front of new audiences. *An Opportunity Found Through Passion* As someone who loved podcasts, Jaclyn knew what differentiated podcasters that blew it out of the water and everyone else. One of those things, was repurposing content and being serious about it. Because of the rising opportunity in the medium, she took the idea or repurposing content and cold pitched it to a couple prospects and got a decent conversion rate. PodReacher ended up working with two of the original ten prospects and got warm responses from six. Eighteen months later, she now has nine clients and a team of ten writers! *The Potential of Webinars* It’s important, as a business owner, to monitor trends in the market. One of the avenues that Jaclyn is trying into to drive growth, besides running ads on newsletters and cold outreach, is working on webinars. With people staying at home, webinars are undoubtedly more popular than ever and attendance rates have been a lot higher. Right now they have their first one with 20 people signing up on the first day, and the goal is to get 200 people that are not their list. If it’s well-received, and the conversion rate is good, Jaclyn plans to leverage webinars to bring the business to the next level. *About PodReacher:* PodReacher is a service providing done-for-you text content to complement your audio podcast. We offer edited transcripts, articles/blog posts, show notes, and custom content created from your past episodes. *Outline of the Episode:* * [] Finding good writers for people. Increasing podcast promotion and repurposing podcasts for content. * [] Understanding how great podcasters differed from the rest, and using that knowledge to offer a productized service. * [] Transcriptions versus articles. How different are they from a marketing perspective? * [] PodReacher’s client base and team size. * [] Easily finding her first client because of an already established relationship. Don’t underestimate the connections you make at events! * [] The benefits of automation on a growing business and the importance of being able to wear many hats. * [] Perks of getting a virtual assistant. * [] A dinner with any business mentor and Jaclyn’s superpower. Tyler and Greg also do a thought experiment on what they would do if their businesses tripled in revenue! Listen to the full interview on Productized Snacks! A Jolly Humble Beginning Greg's journey to the creation of Jolly Content started when he became a ghostwriter. When the number of projects he took on became too unmanageable, he took a team of contractors to help him out, which eventually led to the founding of the company to produce on-site content. At the start, they had to beg different clients over and over for trial pieces, but later found a way to pivot into an SEO focus because of Greg's personal gigs on ghostwritten outreaches. He accepted an offer to do media outreach, where he learned that ghostwriting isn't just an on-site SEO plan. They shifted to off-site SEO content and finally found the service model that works after struggling for two years! Getting Out of Your Own Way with Accounting and Coaching Throughout his career, there were a couple of experiences that taught Greg to get out of his own way. One of the obstacles that he and his partner Morgan (along with the business) recently overcame was an unhealthy way of accounting. Greg would hound Morgan for all the new transactions and track them on Google Sheets manually. That's on top of the hours of work they have to do for the business each day! It was only this January that they switched to QuickBooks, which helped immensely with saving a significant amount of time on something that should never have happened. Remember, the business has been around for more than two years now, so imagine how many hours could have been used elsewhere! Another roadblock they dealt with was coaching. Both Greg and Morgan covered coaching for their writers, which wasn't delivered in the most positive way possible. The actionable points they provided to their employees ended up becoming mixed messages that confused many. One writer would get advice from Morgan and a conflicting one from Greg. Interestingly enough, this resulted in varying results from month to month because the processes for each writer changed from time to time. While this system worked for a while, they still ended up hiring a professional coach to do the job. Good thing that the seemingly chaotic outcome allowed them to see what worked and what didn't. It's best to focus on what you do well and have someone better do the rest. If you want to hear the full story, head over to Productized Snacks! About Greg Heilers: I’m a servant leader, writer, editor, and entrepreneur. Previously, I worked as a farmer, chef, and operations manager across the US, Europe, the Middle East, Central America, and China. I’m proud that a lot of my work was at non-profits supporting the disadvantaged. This informs my current work in agri-food tech, education, land use, and technology’s social impact. Today, I work remotely, splitting the year between the San Francisco Bay Area and Hefei (three hours west of Shanghai, by high-speed rail). My youth and early adulthood was split between suburban, coastal southern California, and rural, hilly southern Indiana and central Kentucky.
