Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of the Talk Music podcast!WOW I'm so excited about this one as my guest is GORDIE JOHNSON from BIG SUGAR! Gordie Johnson has earned numerous gold and platinum records with his band Big Sugar, and as producer/musician with Gov't Mule, Taj Mahal, North Mississippi Allstars, Toots Hibbert, Dennis Alcapone, Leroy Sibbles, Willi Williams, Nashville Pussy, Joel Plaskett, The Trews and Default. We chat about why JACK WHITE recently proclaimed the album 500 Pounds as the BEST blues-based album to ever come out of Canada! (also my first gold album on my Hypnotic label!) Gordie goes into detail about how he originally met Jack as a kid at a gig in AUSTIN, TX when he was the drummer for the band GOOBER AND THE PEAS, opening for BIG SUGAR. Jack burned out his 500 Pounds cassette and, a couple of decades later, was excited to re-release the album on his THIRD MAN label, letting the entire world know how much it meant to him growing up. We also go deep into Gordie's early beginnings, how I ended up signing him to my label and co-producing the BIG SUGAR debut album, earning the EDISON award in Holland for best blues album. Further discussion revolves around how BIG SUGAR broke wide open with the video for “Sleep in Late," and that exposure resulted in opening gigs for BB KING, ARETHA FRANKLIN and RAY CHARLES! We then delve into the making of the 500 pounds album and how Gordie worked his magic in the studio. Enjoy part one of his long, illustrious career! Hosted on Acast. In 1972, director Perry Henzell set a gritty crime thriller in Jamaica's exploding, politically charged music scene, and came up with THE HARDER THEY COME—the cult-movie spark that started reggae music's slow burn around the world.Host Rico Gagliano tells the story of a film and a soundtrack that inspired rebels and rockers from the Clash to Willie Nelson. Guests include Henzell's daughter Justine, UK music writer Lloyd Bradley, and Paul Douglas—drummer and bandleader of reggae legends The Maytals. The third season of the MUBI Podcast, titled “Needle on the Record,” dives into the unifying power of movie music and tells the stories behind some of cinema's most renowned “needle drops”—moments where filmmakers deployed pre-existing music instead of an original score. Each episode explores an iconic marriage of song and image that's become part of pop culture. Singers Special. Escuchar audio
Toots Hibbert was a titan of Jamaican popular music. With his harmony group the Maytals he indelibly changed the island's music scene in the early 1960s by infusing ska with gospel and went on to captivate overseas audiences by blending blues and funk with reggae, becoming one of Jamaica's best-known performers. Never Grow Old: A Salute To Toots And The Maytals is an homage to Toots, whose incredible career only ended when he tragically died of Covid-19 in September 2020, aged 77. On this show, producer David Katz will trace his evolution, using select archive interviews with the man. APWW #861

From the West Indies to West Africa, Reggae has spread to many countries across the world, often incorporating local instruments and joining with other styles. In 1973, the film The Harder They Come starring Jimmy Cliff was released and introduced Jamaican music to cinema audiences outside Jamaica. Reggae in Africa was much boosted by the visit of Bob Marley to Zimbabwe on Independence Day in April 1980. Nigerian reggae had developed in the 1970s. In South Africa, reggae music has played a unifying role amongst cultural groups in Cape Town. ----- In this episode you’ll hear: 1) Jamming by Bob Marley & The Wailers 2) Montego Bay by Amazulu 3) Reggae Got Soul by Toots (Hibbert) & The Maytals (with Ken Boothe & Marcia Griffith) 4) Arrival by Jimmy Cliff 5) Redemption Song by Wyclef Jean 6) Trickster by Johnny Osbourne 7) What's True by Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers 8) Hey Love by Inner Circle 9) War/No More Trouble by Playing For Change (with Bono and Bob Marley) 10) Groovin' (Out On Life) by UB40 11) My Number One by Gregory Peck 12) Satisfaction by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires & Friends 13) You're No Good by Ken Boothe 14) Rock Me Baby by Johnny Nash 15) No Woman, No Cry by Fugees 16) Many Rivers To Cross by Jimmy Cliff ************* Join the conversation on Facebook at ---- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ----- or by email at: ----- dannymemorylane@gmail.com

Today our Off the Road series welcomes longtime Bonnie Raitt bassist , and sometime Maui resident James "Hutch" Hutchinson . All Things Considered Honolulu Host Dave Lawrence continues the interview series , which features hours of interviews and exclusive musical performances connecting with artists around the world during the pandemic. Hutch has a long career that has included working with John Cipollina, the Neville Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others, through session work and live performances. Since the early 1980’s he’s been the bassist for Bonnie Raitt, and still an active contributor to other projects. In our feature, we hear about how the pandemic impacted the tour and album plans for Bonnie Raitt, who Hutch was rehearsing with in the San Francisco Bay Area when the crisis began. He also tells some great stories of connecting to several of the music luminaries who we’ve lost to the virus: Manu Dibango, Toots Hibbert and Ellis Marsalis among them. Hutch also shared some
The great Toots Hibberts, better know as Toots and the Maytals is a Jamaica icon, a treasure. That voice is unmistakable and I hope I did it justice in this podcast. I wanted to highlight the fact that we all share similarities in the way we process relationships. From the moment couples met, to the first date, and all along our journey together, our stories are similar. This year, Jamaica and the World lost Toots Hibberts, he is now buried in Jamaica's National Heroes Park. May his soul Rest In Peace. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/twoonanisland/message
"My first one was 'Get Up, Stand Up,' but I crossed it out because I was like, 'That's too obvious.' There's another one called 'Slave Driver,' which is less obvious that I like. In my deeper cuts that would be the one,'" Ziggy Marley says of why he chose his father's "Slave Driver" as his dad's protest song on this week's People Have The Power.
