This week in the neighborhood, we're having a visit with Eliot Daley. About Our Guest (In His Own Words) Eliot Daley www.eliotdaley.com My life's work spans multiple causes and enterprises. Early in my career I taught and counseled at both the high school and college levels, was a chaplain (Middlebury College) and a parish minister, while simultaneously studying the social impact of TV. Realizing that children's exposure to the world through TV (not a feature of my own upbringing in the 40s and 50s) would dramatically change their social and emotional and informational environments, I pursued all the available research on the subject and shared what I learned by producing workshops and writing articles on the subject for various national publications. As part of my ongoing research into children's programs, I encountered the then-fledgling production of “Mister Rogers' Neighborhood” in 1969 and set up a meeting with Fred Rogers to learn more about it and to write an article about his program and work. We spent a weekend together with our families and realized instantly that we were comrades-in-arms. Shortly thereafter he asked me if I would consider joining him as his co-writer and executive head of the company, and I eagerly accepted his invitation. In the early years, I wrote 15-20 of the 65 programs we produced annually, but my management responsibilities for the ancillary non-broadcast products (books, records, educational materials) eventually displaced my time for writing scripts. Production of “Mister Rogers' Neighborhood” was recessed in the late 1970s after nearly 500 episodes, and I went on to undertake other pursuits. But of course Fred and I remained intimate friends all the rest of our lives and conferred often about matters both the serious and silly. Later, I founded or co-founded several consulting companies. The first of these provided counsel to philanthropists, foundations and major corporations like AT&T to optimize their charitable contributions. Another of my companies developed long-range strategy for health care organizations including Mayo Clinic and Johnson & Johnson. Later, I was a leader in several medical technology companies, from which pursuits I retired to devote myself to full-time writing. I maintain a blog (“The Daley Almanac”) and am the author of Father Feelings (William Morrow and Pocketbooks), Sick and Tired of Being Fat (HarperCollins and Hazelden), numerous articles and Op-Eds and letters to the Editor. I have completed manuscripts for two more books, Taking Your Lumps (a lessons-learned-in-business memoir) and Formerly Called ‘Retirement' (reflections on the psychological transition to a world beyond the realm of employment). I hold the A.B. and M.A. degrees in the social sciences and education, respectively, from California State University at Fresno and the Th.M. degree in theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary (Presbyterian). I am married to the Rev. Patricia Daley, and we are the parents of three adult children engaged in non-profit pursuits to heal the breaches in creation. A rondoniense Jaíne Mackievicz ensina – no país do fast-food – que inspiração, criatividade e autenticidade podem ser o melhor tempero. A brasileira ganhou o reality show “The Julia Child Challenge” (Food Network/Discovery +), em homenagem à autora de livros e apresentadora de programas de culinária mais lendária dos Estados Unidos. Cleide Klock, correspondente da RFI em Los Angeles Como prêmio, Jaíne vai passar três meses estudando na Le Cordon Bleu, em Paris, mesma escola em que Julia Child estudou na década de 1950. Foi fazendo arroz com feijão, moqueca, caldo de peixe, e outras comidas bem brasileiras, que Jaíne – que mora nos Estados Unidos há cinco anos – desbancou os outros sete concorrentes do reality que aconteceu em Los Angeles e foi transmitido para todo o mundo. "Ser brasileira me ajudou muito nessa interpretação da comida. Como a comida me representa, muito mais do que é bonito ver na TV. Isso é que os chefes querem ver. Então, quando eu entendi isso, eu fiz frango com polenta, brigadeiro, muito bolo porque eu faço muito bolo em casa, crepe, porque a gente come muita panqueca enrolada na carne moída. Aí eu interpretei da maneira que eu achava que era um pouco mais francesa", conta Jaíne. O concurso de seis episódios foi uma celebração aos 110 anos do nascimento de Julia (1912–2004). A californiana foi uma celebridade nos Estados Unidos por ensinar na TV, durante quatro décadas, de forma bem humorada a alta gastronomia que aprendeu na escola da França. O estúdio do programa era uma réplica da lendária cozinha da apresentadora, que teve a história contada no filme "Julie e Julia" (2009), com Meryl Streep no papel principal. "Todos daqui cresceram sobre a influência da Julia, todo mundo entendia muito de comida francesa. Eu nunca comi um prato de um restaurante francês na minha vida, porque na Amazônia não tem restaurante francês, em Boston onde eu morava, não tinha dinheiro para ir em um restaurante francês. Então, eu não tinha ideia, era o que eu achava que era. Um dos competidores, por exemplo, está na França toda semana, ele trabalha na França. Os outros também já visitaram a França em algum momento da vida." Julia e Jaíne Jaíne nasceu em uma pequena vila na Amazônia, na cidade de Costa Marques, na fronteira com a Bolívia. Ela relembra um fato que aconteceu quando tinha seis anos de idade, e que além de marcá-la por toda vida, definiu essa trajetória. "Um dia eu vi um clipe da Julia Child em um programa infantil, era algum outro programa do Brasil mostrando o programa daqui dos Estados Unidos, que chamava Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Eu vi a Julia fazendo uma tigela de espaguete e ela comia com hashi (os palitos japoneses). Eu achei muito divertido e fiquei com aquilo na cabeça. Cresci cozinhando por conta, sem receita, tentando aprender. Quando eu era adolescente lançaram Julie e Julia, com Meryl Streep, aí vi a Julia pela segunda vez no cinema e me apaixonei de vez. Coloquei na minha cabeça que um dia iria aprender a cozinhar como ela e que iria para a França aprender a cozinhar como ela fez. E isso eu tinha 14, 15 anos no meio da floresta", diz a vencedora do reality. Mas, a vida e a família pediam caminhos mais objetivos. Jaíne se tornou advogada e arquivou os planos até a morte repentina do pai em um acidente. O momento de guinada para ela chegar à conclusão: "Eu não vou gastar nenhum segundo da minha vida para fazer algo que eu não ame muito". Jaíne embarcou com o namorado e com o desejo de estudar na escola de gastronomia fundada por Julia Child, em Massachusetts (EUA). Só na terra do Tio Sam descobriu que o curso era caro demais e, na época, tinha também inglês de menos. Mas, se entregou aos livros de culinária, através deles aprendeu e aperfeiçoou a língua de tal forma que começou a escrever sobre comida para publicações americanas especializadas. Em mais um momento decisivo, daqueles que emocionam, na cara e na coragem Jaíne mandou uma sugestão para a revista Cherry Bombe para escrever sobre a conexão da menina do meio da Amazônia com Julia Child. Sugestão aceita, a revista bateu recordes de vendas e por causa do artigo veio um telefonema para convidá-la a participar do reality show. Autenticidade Até ser a grande vencedora, Jaíne não sabia que o prêmio seria o curso completo na badalada escola francesa. Há onze anos, ela guardava dinheiro para um dia poder estudar no mesmo local onde Julia aperfeiçoou suas habilidades com as panelas, no forno e no fogão. "Para mim, a maior lição do programa todo é que você não precisa fazer diferente na vida do que você é. Parece clichê quando as pessoas falam que a autenticidade ganha. Mas se você se esforça demais, não é natural. Eu só cozinhei comida que eu gosto de comer e funciona. Aparentemente, mais gente gostou delas", brinca. Jaíne está escrevendo livros de receitas e negocia a publicação com uma grande editora americana especializada em gastronomia. Mas, um dos grandes desejos da rondoniense é poder levar suas receitas e adaptações das cozinhas francesa e americana, um dia, também ao público brasileiro.

"Todos daqui cresceram sobre a influência da Julia, todo mundo entendia muito de comida francesa. Eu nunca comi um prato de um restaurante francês na minha vida, porque na Amazônia não tem restaurante francês, em Boston onde eu morava, não tinha dinheiro para ir em um restaurante francês. Então, eu não tinha ideia, era o que eu achava que era. Um dos competidores, por exemplo, está na França toda semana, ele trabalha na França. Os outros também já visitaram a França em algum momento da vida." Julia e Jaíne Jaíne nasceu em uma pequena vila na Amazônia, na cidade de Costa Marques, na fronteira com a Bolívia. Ela relembra um fato que aconteceu quando tinha seis anos de idade, e que além de marcá-la por toda vida, definiu essa trajetória. "Um dia eu vi um clipe da Julia Child em um programa infantil, era algum outro programa do Brasil mostrando o programa daqui dos Estados Unidos, que chamava Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Eu vi a Julia fazendo uma tigela de espaguete e ela comia com hashi (os palitos japoneses). Eu achei muito divertido e fiquei com aquilo na cabeça. Cresci cozinhando por conta, sem receita, tentando aprender. Quando eu era adolescente lançaram Julie e Julia, com Meryl Streep, aí vi a Julia pela segunda vez no cinema e me apaixonei de vez. Coloquei na minha cabeça que um dia iria aprender a cozinhar como ela e que iria para a França aprender a cozinhar como ela fez. E isso eu tinha 14, 15 anos no meio da floresta", diz a vencedora do reality. Mas, a vida e a família pediam caminhos mais objetivos. Jaíne se tornou advogada e arquivou os planos até a morte repentina do pai em um acidente. O momento de guinada para ela chegar à conclusão: "Eu não vou gastar nenhum segundo da minha vida para fazer algo que eu não ame muito". Jaíne embarcou com o namorado e com o desejo de estudar na escola de gastronomia fundada por Julia Child, em Massachusetts (EUA). Só na terra do Tio Sam descobriu que o curso era caro demais e, na época, tinha também inglês de menos. Mas, se entregou aos livros de culinária, através deles aprendeu e aperfeiçoou a língua de tal forma que começou a escrever sobre comida para publicações americanas especializadas. Em mais um momento decisivo, daqueles que emocionam, na cara e na coragem Jaíne mandou uma sugestão para a revista Cherry Bombe para escrever sobre a conexão da menina do meio da Amazônia com Julia Child. Sugestão aceita, a revista bateu recordes de vendas e por causa do artigo veio um telefonema para convidá-la a participar do reality show. Autenticidade Até ser a grande vencedora, Jaíne não sabia que o prêmio seria o curso completo na badalada escola francesa. Há onze anos, ela guardava dinheiro para um dia poder estudar no mesmo local onde Julia aperfeiçoou suas habilidades com as panelas, no forno e no fogão. "Para mim, a maior lição do programa todo é que você não precisa fazer diferente na vida do que você é. Parece clichê quando as pessoas falam que a autenticidade ganha. Mas se você se esforça demais, não é natural. Eu só cozinhei comida que eu gosto de comer e funciona. Aparentemente, mais gente gostou delas", brinca. Jaíne está escrevendo livros de receitas e negocia a publicação com uma grande editora americana especializada em gastronomia. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:18-20)On August 31, 2001, millions of children sat in front of their TVs to watch the final episode of Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Eleven days later, a dramatically different scene unfolded on those same screens as the world watched terrorists fly airplanes into the World Trade Center. Recently retired, Mister Rogers was drafted back into service to help comfort children and their parents. After recognizing the horrific events of 9/11, Rogers ended his televised address on a hopeful note saying, “No matter what our particular job, especially in our world today, we all are called to be 'tikkun olam,' repairers of creation.”Given Rogers's devout Christian faith, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had today's passage in mind as he penned those words. Rogers understood that the Kingdom of God isn't going to come in one fell swoop. It is going to come slowly like a mustard seed growing into a tree or yeast folding into dough (see Matthew 13:31-33). And it's going to come at least in part through you and me—those who have been given what Paul calls “the ministry of reconciliation.”In today's passage, Paul makes it clear that that ministry has two parts. On the one hand, we are to “implore” other people to “be reconciled to God.” But human beings aren't the only thing in need of reconciliation. Paul says that God is “reconciling the world to himself.” The Greek word for “world” here is kosmos meaning that Christ's redemption truly does flow “far as the curse is found.”What does this mean for our work? It means that the work you do to fix broken processes at work, fight for justice, create beauty, and share the gospel—all of it is a part of your “ministry of reconciliation.” God is “making his appeal” to a broken world "through [you],” believer. Be a joyful ambassador for him and his gospel today!

Dr. Lucille Burbank: Being a Consultant on Sesame Street, Recalling Some Awesome Interviews from Giants in Children's Television - Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, and Sesame Street-and Discussing Lucille's book - The Inside Secrets of Sesame Street, 3rd Ed. “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” premiered on this day in 1967. The creation of Fred Rogers, a minister and puppeteer, who spoke to children of peace, patience, and diversity.
It all started on February 19th, 1968 when the first episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood aired. Little did we know that the simple sets, sweaters, sneakers, and little trolly were all made deliberately to foster a love of learning and wonder. In this episode, I’m talking to Mr. Rogers Super Fans, Greg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski, who co-authored the book, When You Wonder You’re Learning – Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids. Both were raised in Pennsylvania, the home of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, and grew up watching and learning from him. In their work, as adults, they have taken the learnings from Fred Rogers and the science of learning to help guide us to raise kids with a love of learning, that lights them up. In this episode, the guys chat about the incredible legacy of Fred Rogers and how every time people tried to use his likeness or intellectual property for branding purposes it never ended well. Burger King: Mister Rodney Here is Mister Rogers in the first episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood: Here is ‘Mister Rodney' in Burger King's 1984 commercial for their flame-broiled burgers: Parodies aren't uncommon in marketing. While it's not unheard of for a parody to cross the line and be offensive enough that it gets taken down, it doesn't happen that often. Burger King's 1984 ‘Mister Rodney' ad is one of those parodies that got taken down - but not for being offensive. To understand why it was taken down, it might help if we know more about Fred McFeely Rogers. Mister Rogers - A Brief Overview Rogers earned his bachelor's degree in music, worked in children's television for a few years, returned to school to earn a bachelor's degree in divinity, and became a Presbyterian minister before attending the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Child Development. Rogers was not only educated on child development but he also began his 30-year long collaboration with child psychologist Margaret McFarland. From there, he was able to begin developing children's shows that had value. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, ran for 33 years from 1968-2001. More than just childrens' entertainment, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was critically acclaimed for focusing on children's emotional and physical concerns, such as death, sibling rivalry, school enrollment, and divorce. Why Burger King Dropped the CommercialOr it's half the reason. The other half is kindness. In the spring of 1984, Rogers started to receive “countless” phone calls from parents complaining about the commercial. Having seen the ad himself and taken issue with it, Fred Rogers contacted the Senior Vice President of Burger King, Don Dempsey. Many people who take offense to being parodied cite libel or copyright infringement, or lack of royalties. But not Fred Rogers. He said, "To have someone who looks like me doing a commercial is very confusing for children.”Rogers didn't threaten Burger King with any legal action. He simply called them and politely asked them to stop running the commercial. Rogers explained that "It's a real testimony to what fine things can occur when people of goodwill can talk to each other." No lawyers. No mess. No fuss. Just gentle, kind conversation. That's the Mister Rogers way. Target and Mister Rogers A decade after his death, the Fred Rogers Company licensed “Won't You Be My Neighbor,” the theme song from Mister Rogers Neighborhood, to Target in 2013. 2013 Target ad. William Isler, president of Fred Rogers Co, told The Globe and Mail “when we were first approached by Target, we immediately felt very comfortable with the respect they had for Fred and his legacy. That is paramount to us.” Like Burger King in 1984, it's easy to understand why Target would want to use Rogers in their marketing. But why would the Fred Rogers Company license out the legacy of a man who was so outspoken in his stance against commercialization? Google and Mister RogersIn 2018, Google launched an ad for the Google Pixel 3. Unlike the Target ad from five years earlier, rather than using a cover of one of Rogers' songs, in Google's commercial Rogers's own voice can be heard talking and singing about wonder. It seems there are two ways to view the ad: The first being that in Google's defense, Mister Rogers always tried to instill a sense of wonder and intellectual curiosity in his audience members and Google hoped to do the same with the Pixel 3. The second is that Rogers was also very clearly, explicitly, and publicly against not just advertisements aimed at children, but his voice and image being used to advertise to children. François Scarborough Clemmons (born April 23, 1945 in Birmingham) is an opera singer, playwright, and lecturer best known for his appearances as Officer Clemmons on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. François made his first appearance on Mister Rogers Neighborhood in 1968. His role as Officer Clemmons on Mister Rogers Neighborhood was groundbreaking, presenting a positive image of an African American at a time when racial tensions were high. He writes in his new book, Officer Clemmons, that in Fred Rogers he found a friend, a mentor, and with Fred's wife Joanne, a family. Itʼs been 50 years since Fred Rogers first appeared on TV screens, a gentle and avuncular man who warbled “Wonʼt You Be My Neighbor?” as he changed into a cardigan and sneakers. The low-key, low-tech Mister Rogersʼ Neighborhood presented Rogers as one adult in a busy world who always had time to listen to kids. That legacy burns for many in these turbulent times. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Rogers's faith in Jesus Christ motivated him to love everyone.

Voices In My Head Podcast Episode #287: Guest Francois Clemmons (Officer Clemmons) from Mister Rogers Neighborhood On this episode of Voices In My Head we welcome Dr. Francois Clemmons. Dr. François Scarborough Clemmons is an Afro-American singer, actor, playwright and university lecturer. He is perhaps best known for his appearances as Officer Clemmons on the PBS television series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from 1968 to 1993.In 1968, Clemmons won the Metropolitan Opera auditions in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went on to Cleveland, Ohio, where he won a position in the Metropolitan Opera Studio. He sang there professionally for seven seasons, performing over 70 roles with companies including The New York City Opera, Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, and Washington Civic Opera.Clemmons sang with numerous orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1973, he won a Grammy Award for a recording of Porgy and Bess; he performed the role of "Sportin' Life" in that musical over 100 times.For 25 years, Clemmons performed the role of Officer Clemmons, a friendly neighborhood policeman, in the "Neighborhood of Make-Believe" on the children's television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. In the neighborhood itself, Clemmons ran a singing and dance studio located in the building diagonally across from Mr. Rogers' house. As "Officer Clemmons", he became one of the first African Americans to have a recurring role on a kids' TV series. Clemmons actively writes across genres for a variety of age groups. Currently, he is writing his autobiography entitled DivaMan: My Life in Song, a children's story entitled ButterCup and the Majic Cane, and a volume of poetry entitled A Place Of My Own. Some of his published works include a volume of spirituals named Songs for Today and a stage musical called My Name Is Hayes based on the life of Roland Hayes. He also commissioned a choral work composed of spirituals entitled Changed My Name, arranged by Linda Twine.From 1997 until his retirement in 2013, Clemmons was the Alexander Twilight Artist in Residence and director of the Martin Luther King Spiritual Choir at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. He “played the role of professor, choirmaster, resident vocal soloist, advisor, confidant, and community cheerleader”. He is also well known in the Middlebury community for his superb rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner", which he sings at the Middlebury College men's basketball games.Clemmons lives and works in Middlebury, Vermont, where he is the Emeritus Artist in Residence of Middlebury College. And got out of a ticket every. Single. Time. WHAT? It wasn't just enough for us to get on her case, though, because Jen's Dad called in to give her a piece of his mind as well.
