This is Love Hurts. Michele Carlo is a writer and storyteller living in Brooklyn. Michele has always been a bit of a late bloomer, whether that involved getting into her dream college, or pursuing performing, or finding love again after a 14-year marriage ended. She takes us through that journey and shares how it relied on the belief she had in herself. Our theme song is EmoTown by Mikki Hommel. This week storyteller, comedienne, actress, author and natural redhead Michele Carlo joins me in this enchanting podcast episode. A native New Yorker, she began her career in the entertainment industry on the eclectic stages of the city. She has appeared across the country in many shows including NRP with Latino U.S.A. as she is an artist of Puerto Rican descent. The Clearwater Music and Arts Festival, RISK!, Story Colliders, PBS's Stories from the Stage, MOTH's GrandSlams and Mainstage are other impressive feathers in her performer's cap. "Fish Out of Agua" is a book she authored which contains many of her early MOTH stories. She had roles in various indie productions and was with Sheria Mattis on Kelly Jean Fitzsimmon's "NO, YOU TELL IT!" for the 10th anniversary of the show. She will be in many more shows and on many other podcasts to come. These appearances include a storytelling at the "No Name Super Story Party" at the WordUp Community Bookshop. Also bringing her talents to the World Channel/WGBH, she was on Episode 11 of the "Stories from the Stage" series. A woman of many skills, Michele Carlo works as a professional face painter as well. I am delighted and honored to have this comedy extraordinaire, this brilliant wordsmith, this beguiling entertainer, this multi-faceted artist grace the airwaves of my podcast this week!
When we get comedians and storytellers on the pod, they do not hold back. Michele Carlo and Sheria Mattis take us on the most terrific tangents, touching on Nuyorican vs. Jamaican culture, getting pounded by strap-ons after menopause, and the wild world of foot worship, all while dropping deep insightful wisdom that makes us scream YASSSSS! We also adopt the word "casseroles" as our new favorite euphemism, shake our fists at a male gyno's incompetence regarding the copper IUD, and even give you some new old songs to add to your playlist. Listen now, thank us later. Michele Carlo is a writer/performer who has lived in four of the five boroughs of New York City and can remember when a slice of pizza cost fifty cents. Her memoir, Fish Out Of Agua: My life on neither side of the (subway) tracks, published this summer by Citadel Press, recounts Carlo's growing up as a double-outsider: A red-headed, freckled, English-speaking Puerto Rican in an Italian/Irish neighborhood in The Bronx before both the "multicultural" and "politically correct" revolutions. The New York Daily News said of her: "...drive, strength and honesty permeates her memoir, which is hilarious at times and dead-serious at others." The Wall Street Journalsaid: (Fish Out Of Agua) "exposes a near-extinct New York." And Bust magazine declared: "Michele's personal journey is compelling."
