After we covered Cameroon last week, this week we move one country to the west and talk to Nkem Nwogu about life in Nigeria. Nkem grew up in Abuja and worked for Nigeria's equivalent of the IRS but he felt a greater calling. He founded a non-profit to help Nigerians who were affected by the rise of Boko Haram. Now, he brought this sense of purpose to USC Marshall.
From climbing all 58 Colorado mountains taller than 14,000 feet to being an exchange student in India, Pyrenee Steiner has been all around the world. Perhaps it was only natural that she would join the Peace Corps after college. What was it like to live and work in a village in rural Cameroon? What lessons did she learn about leadership? And how did a bear sneak into her house? yes, you heard right.
What do you learn about leadership from defusing bombs? Quite a lot. Aaron Raidt was an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal officer in Afghanistan. This is the Army's bomb squad, the same job the main character had in The Hurt Locker (and Aaron definitely has some thoughts on that movie).He shares the lessons he learned doing one of the military's most intense and dangerous jobs and tells us where he'd like to take those lessons next in his career.
In MBA programs, we're told we are learning to be future leaders in business. When we think about leaders we admire, though, we often default to naming political leaders. My guest this week is Max Lerner, a first year MBA student who has spent most of the last decade working on political campaigns - including the campaign of newly elected Senator Jon Ossoff. Max had a front row seat as the country's political geography radically shifted and he got to work on the front lines of American history.What did Max learn from these experiences?
