As grocery prices rise and political pressure mounts, radical solutions are back on the table – including state-owned food stores. In this essay, Jimmy Nicholls, writer of Poke the Bear and host of The Right Dishonourable podcast, examines New York's experiment under mayor Zohran Mamdani, arguing that public supermarkets are a costly illusion. With razor-thin margins and global supply chains driving prices, Nicholls suggests that even the most ambitious politicians cannot outmaneuver basic economics – and that taxpayers may end up footing the bill for a policy destined to disappoint.Despatch brings you the best articles from CapX's unrivalled daily newsletter.Stay informed with CapX's unmissable daily briefings from the heart of Westminster. This week, Sam Johnsson hijacks the podcast while I'm off on a skiing holiday in Austria and he takes on a topic that might not sound flashy, but can quietly change everything in a farm business: building a strong financial system. Because for a lot of farm owners, the numbers are still something that sit in the background until they become a problem. And that's a hard way to lead. When the books are behind, the reporting is patchy, or the numbers only come out at tax time, it leaves people making big decisions without a clear view of where the business is actually at. That creates stress, second-guessing, and a constant sense of being on the back foot. In this conversation, Sam is joined by Jayne Walsh, Tim Fowler, Renee Nicholls, and Bec Balfour to unpack what good financial management actually looks like in a real farm business. Between them, they bring lived experience from multi-generational farming operations, succession, enterprise management, and bookkeeping support for rural businesses. And what comes through clearly is this: strong financial systems are not just about compliance. They are about clarity, confidence, and better decisions. We explore the gap between “doing the books” and actually using your numbers to lead the business well. From clean data and simple chart-of-accounts structures, through to forecasting, enterprise analysis, cashflow visibility, and stronger conversations with banks, this is a practical discussion about getting out of reactive mode and into a much more proactive way of operating. Here's what we uncover: Why weekly reconciliations and end-of-month processes create confidence in the numbers How forecasting helps you adjust as the season changes instead of reacting too late The value of enterprise-level reporting to understand what is and is not making money Why banks and lenders respond better when your numbers are current, clear, and well presented Practical first steps for farm businesses wanting to improve their financial systems this year If you've ever felt like the financial side of the business is heavier than it should be, this episode is a good reminder that you're not bad at business, you just might not have the right system yet. Because the goal here is not to become an accountant. It's to build enough visibility and rhythm around the numbers that you can lead with more confidence, make better decisions earlier, and stop carrying that constant uncertainty in your head. Bec Balfour from Rembiz Bookkeeping and Renee Nicholls from RN Business Consulting both work with rural businesses to bring more clarity, structure, and confidence to the numbers. You can reach Bec at rembiz.com.au or rebecca@rembiz.com.au, and Renee at rnbusinessconsulting.com.au or renee@rnbusinessconsulting.com.au. Sam, Jayne, Tim, Renee, and Bec - thank you for a conversation that gets to the heart of what strong farm finance looks like. There's real value in this one for any farm owner who wants to feel more in control of the business, rather than be overwhelmed by it. Keep winning, Jeremy Hutchings & the Farm Owners Academy Team

In this episode of the Worship Online Podcast, Keith sits down with worship leader, songwriter, and author Brooke Nicholls to talk about the unexpected reality of following God when it leads somewhere you didn't plan. New alcohol legislation could go further. The Bill put to Parliament yesterday includes a raft of changes to bar licences, aiming to cut red tape and bureaucracy. But Alcohol Beverages Council Executive Director Virginia Nicholls told Mike Hosking changes should also limit the number of district licensing committees. With 67 committees currently around the country, she says it's hard to create consistency. She says it's a reflection of out-of-date rules, that doesn't acknowledge a difference between a good and bad license holder. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If your daughter is constantly comparing herself to other athletes more than focusing on her own game, or losing confidence this is your episode! Have her take this quiz to find out your competitor style: elitecompetitor.com/athlete Comparison is one of the most common confidence killers in girl athletes. It feels normal. It even feels productive sometimes. But when her focus is on everyone else, she loses the one thing that actually moves the needle - her own game.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. As the Formula One season kicked off on Sunday, we saw the advent of full hybrid racing at the top level for the first time. A full 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power at the pinnacle of motorsport. Quite the change. And then Mercedes ran off into the distance. More of the same (mostly). The world of cars is changing, slowly but definitively. Although the ban on fully petrol and diesel powered cars seems to be the can that will be endlessly kicked down the road, more and more people are turning to hybrid and electric cars with each passing month. It's not always easy to make sense of it all, especially in the luxury world, so naturally I made a few phone calls and got Country Life's car aficionado, Adam Hay-Nicholls, to come on and so some explaining.Subscribe to the Country Life podcast on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to the Country Life podcast on SpotifySubscribe to the Country Life podcast on AudibleWe talked about growing up in the age of internal combustion, and what the transition to electric means for both the consumer and the professional car journalist. We chatted about the upcoming Formula One season, and whether anyone will really notice the difference (the answer is no, but also yes, a bit). And then of course we segued. Why did Adam once meet a sheikh in Dubai who owned Saddam Hussein's watch? Why did Adam once land a helicopter outside of a biker bar in Revelstoke, Canada? And why is he writing a new book on all things Bugatti, which means he must simply go and drive the new £4 million Tourbillon? All essential in a day's work, and you'll have to tune in to find out the answers.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Adam Hay-NichollsEditor and producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. EPYSODE 67: "Would You Believe", by Billy Nicholls. Guest: Billy Nicholls. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we present one of the most beautiful and bittersweet stories in 1960s British pop: Billy Nicholls' legendary 1968 album Would You Believe. Hailed by critics, this shimmering psych-pop masterpiece was shelved before its proper release and went on to become one of the rarest and most sought-after records in the collector world. We explore the album's lush orchestration, studio craftsmanship, and the influence of the Immediate Records scene, including the key roles played by producer Andrew Loog Oldham and some of Billy's famous musician friends. We discuss the label troubles, industry upheavals, and twists of fate that kept this stunning record in the shadows for decades. Plus a great story of how a Beatle helped kickstart Billy's career! Whether you're a long-time admirer of this wonderful album or discovering it for the first time, this epysode unpacks the music, the myth, and the enduring magic that transformed a once-lost LP into a psych-pop holy grail. I hope you dig "Would You Believe" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===LINKS=== Check out Billy's albums and other merchandise here: https://www.billynicholls.com ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. What happens to a community when the border system breaks down — and what does it look like when order is restored? In this episode of American Potential, host David travels to Yuma, Arizona, to speak with Mayor Douglas Nicholls, who shares firsthand insight into the strain massive border crossings placed on his community and what life looks like now as crossings have dramatically declined. Mayor Nicholls discusses the impact on local law enforcement, emergency services, nonprofits, and residents, as well as the humanitarian toll on migrants caught in cartel-controlled systems. He explains why chaos at the border harms everyone involved — and why the rule of law, legal immigration, and secure borders are essential to protecting both people and communities. This conversation offers a rare, on-the-ground perspective from a border-town mayor who has lived the reality most Americans only see from afar.
