”What went through my mind—I was 19 at the time, my birthday was the prior month—was, oh my goodness, is my life over in terms of being able to live my dream? Because hockey, for me, wasn't just a sport. It was a gateway to do better in all facets of life.”   Tom Smith doesn't like the word “impossible.” After all, time after time, he's beaten the odds. After a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a hockey game, some doctors didn't think he would walk again—but he found a team that believed he could not only walk but skate. Nine months later, he returned to the ice.   His extensive rehab strengthened his body so much that he had no more risk of another injury than any other athlete. But the unthinkable happened, again, when he hit the boards during hockey practice. He found himself back in the hospital relearning to walk, having injured a completely different part of his spine.   Once again, extensive therapy restored much of his function. Then, to complete what he calls his “unwanted hat trick,” a car accident on the way to physical therapy damaged his thoracic spine.    It took three years, but he learned to walk once again; in the process, he found his life's purpose. Now, he's the co-founder and president of the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, which works to change the lives of those living with spinal cord injury and paralysis. And earlier this month, he walked the Boston Marathon for the seventh time, raising awareness and funds for paralysis along the way.   Resources/links: Tom's Instagram The Thomas E. Hey there neighbor, welcome back to the deliciously hot mess we call The John Clay Wolfe Show! We're all jazzed and happy to report that the inaugural Walnut Springs Classic car show went off with a bang--and my oh my, the stories John Clay has to share about the festivities: He sold some damn-near-priceless collectible cars, including one of the world's three oldest Corvettes, country legend George Jones' pickup truck, and a bunch more...of course Richard Rawlings from Gas Monkey Garage was on hand to check out a town full of badass rides, AND his share of cold beer, which flowed quite freely by all accounts; speaking of, comedian/car guru Tom Smith from the Misfit Garage enjoyed his share of tasty "pops" as well--and all present had a fine time! Meanwhile, this week's show is more than a record of all of the fun stuff we enjoyed at last week's car show--we've got a lot of JCW Show for you too: the Colonel, Mike Turley, has got the NFL Draft all lined out for you, with bold predictions about who'll land after Round Two, and whether he thinks Deion Sanders' boy Sheuder will find his place in the pros; JD Ryan has a briefcase full of news, including a heroic tale about a self-proclaimed "Blue Cor Brawler" who wrangles a feisty gator into a recycling bin in less than thirty seconds, sans shoes! Meanwhile, Gigi Drummond has a lot to say about how a cheating husband caught in the act ought to be treated, DJ PreKay has some new rap tunes for us to check out, and Bobbo brings along his friends Johnny Cash, Tiger Wood's Mom, and a lot more--so grab a cold Natty Light and enjoy another picture perfect Saturday with the Wolfe Pack! We're damned glad to see ya.

An ecosystem can be described as all the interactions that occur between organisms and their physical environment. The processes acting within an ecosystem operate on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales and include both biotic and abiotic factors. Ecosystem engineers are those species that have a significant impact on the availability of resources to other species and can be responsible for the creation, maintenance, modification or destruction of an ecosystem. The introduction, or even removal, of such a species can have profound effects on both physical and biological elements of an ecosystem. Whilst we can recognise the impact of ecosystem engineers in modern systems (e.g. the introduction of an invasive species), we don't fully understand what happens when an entirely new ecosystem engineering behaviour evolves. This has undoubtedly happened numerous times throughout geological time with the Great Oxygenation Event and the Cambrian Substrate Revolution being notable examples. Joining us for this episode is Dr Tom Smith, University of Oxford, who has been using a computational approach to try to model what happens when an ecosystem engineer is introduced into an environment. In the years since it has become a cult classic, enough so, in fact, to get a Hollywood remake in 2009 directed by Wes Craven protege Patrick Lussier & starring heartthrob Jensen Ackles from the hit TV show Supernatural. The original movie, in which a town known as Valentine Bluffs experiences a series of murders seemingly committed by a vengeful, deranged miner known as Harry Warden, has never received a proper sequel. Fans of the movie, however, came together to get a professionally done, feature-length fan sequel. It's called Valentine Bluffs: A My Bloody Valentine Fan Film and even features a guest starring performance from Troma's Lloyd Kaufman as the Mayor of Valentine Bluffs. It features all the bloody mayhem one would expect from a sequel to My Bloody Valentine, and, best of all for fans of 80s horror, features lovingly made practical effects rather than CGI. In this previously unreleased interview, I speak with director and special effects artist Tom Smith and lead actress Rachel Keefe about Valentine Bluffs: A My Bloody Valentine Fan Film in-depth! You can view the fan film for free on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIIOv49awUU. Near the end of the conversation Rachel talks about her upcoming role in Joe Lam's horror movie The Fetus. As it turns out, The Fetus is set to be released next month, March 2025, and, in addition to Rachel Keefe, stars Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3's Lauren LaVera as well as genre stalwart Bill Moseley from Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views!

Send us a textTom began his distinguished career with the NYPD in 1990, following his graduation from the Academy. He was assigned to the 30th Precinct in West Harlem, one of the busiest precincts in the department at the time. From 1996 to 1999, Tom served in the Bronx Narcotics Unit, where he was involved in multiple large-scale narcotics operations. One of his most notable cases was a joint operation with the DEA, which led to the seizure of 125 kilos of cocaine from Venezuela—still the largest cocaine bust in the history of the Bronx Narcotics Unit. The operation also resulted in the arrest of several members of a Venezuelan drug cartel. In 1999, Tom was transferred to the Bronx Gang Unit, where he worked on a high-profile investigation that led to the federal arrest of "OG Mac," the leader of the East Coast Bloods Street Gang. His team also arrested the leaders of the United Bloods Nation and the Nieta's Street Gang, crippling their operations in the area.In 2003, Tom was assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, following the Terrorist attacks of 9/11, where he worked on numerous international and domestic terrorism cases. His role included briefing the highest levels of government on critical matters of national security. Tom traveled to 18 countries, leading investigations that ranged from anti-terrorism operations to high-profile kidnapping cases. One of his most notable achievements was leading a three-month deployment to Afghanistan, where he oversaw the successful resolution of a kidnapping case involving a New York Times reporter.Tom's vigilance and expertise also led to the prevention of a planned school shooting, which was thwarted just six days before the attack. During the arrest, law enforcement recovered a hit list, a diagram of the school, and materials used to make pipe bombs.Throughout his career, Tom held a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance and briefed some of the highest-ranking members of the U.S. government. After 30 years of exemplary service, Tom retired in 2020 as a Second Grade Detective.Find Tom SmithInstagramWebsiteYoutubeFind The Suffering PodcastThe Suffering Podcast InstagramKevin Donaldson InstagramMike Failace InstagramApple PodcastSpotifyYouTubeThe Suffering Podcast FamilySherri AllsupKetaReviveToyota of HackensackSupport the showThe Suffering Podcast Instagram Kevin Donaldson Instagram TikTok YouTube

Ep. 67 – In Part Two of my interview with NYPD Det. Tom Smith (Ret.) we discuss 9/11 and how the day unfolded for him; what it was like working rescue and recovery at Ground Zero and later at the landfill to identify belongings and remains and the unique emotional toll of trying to identify those we lost. After 9/11, Tom was assigned to the elite FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) for which he held a Top Secret/SCI clearance. As he says in the interview, “The responsibility was enormous…You have to prevent 9/11 from ever happening again. You are now responsible not only for New York, but the world.”While with JTTF, Tom was deployed in 2009 to the war zone in Afghanistan to coordinate the rescue of a New York Times journalist who had been kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda affiliated group. Tom and the JTTF team were able to create and execute a plan to bring this American hostage home. Then in 2018, Tom's JTTF partner alerted him to a school shooter threat at the high school in upstate NY where Tom was living and working. The high school was the very one his son and daughter were attending. Tom and his partner investigated and built a case that led to the arrest of the would-be shooter finding, among other evidence, the list of students he planned to kill on the last day of school, all of whom were friends of Tom's kids.We close by reflecting on his 30-year career, the inspiration he drew from his NYPD Detective father, the support of his wife and family. And just how much a thank you means. We of course talk about their true crime podcast the Gold Shields Show which Tom co-hosts with his good buddy retired NYPD Sgt. Dan Murphy. They reached their 100th episode in 2024 and launched Season Three in January 2025 with some incredible guests. You can find them on all podcast platforms. Links below. If you haven't already, be sure to check out Part One of my conversation with Tom. We cover the early days of his career with NYPD starting in 1990 on patrol in Harlem. Within a few years he joined the anti-crime team and later Narcotics where he became a detective. He then moved into Gang Investigations in 1998 and then the Robbery Unit in the Bronx in 1999.I want to add that Tom was recently inducted into the National Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame and presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. People have played games forever, but it's only in the past few decades that people really started thinking about what games are, how they work, and how to make them better. Anatomy of Game Design (CRC Press, 2024) takes some of the most popular and beloved games of all time and dissects them to see what makes them tick. By breaking down the systems and content of each game, the underlying systems of game design are laid bare. Eight games are analyzed – including Settlers of Catan; Centipede; Candy Crush Saga; Papers, Please; Magic: The Gathering; and more – each representing a different genre or era of game design. Each game is discussed in detail, using the same methods for each game. What are the verbs of the game that give the player agency? How do those verbs fit together to form a core loop that makes the game engaging? What are the systems that power the gameplay? What is the larger flow that makes the game interesting over and over again? Each game is then used as an example to tie back to one or more larger topics in game design, such as systems design, randomness, monetization, game theory, and iterative approaches to game development. Key Features: Uses well-known games to provide specific, discrete examples of broader game design theory Discusses eight popular games using the same methodology to allow comparison of different types of games Includes both high-level theory and academic perspective and practical, real-world guidance from a working game designer who has created these games for commercial release Provides clear direction for deeper inquiry into game design or related fields such as psychology, anthropology, game development, or systems thinking Rudolf Thomas Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, department lead for Games at culture magazine Titel kulturmagazin, editor of “DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok.
