Kevin Fong has spent his working life in high-risk, high-performance teams. He flies as a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service doctor, has worked on NASA's human spaceflight programme, and was part of the UK's frontline response to major incidents and terror attacks.  In this episode, he joins Professor of Environment and Society, Helen Czerski, to discuss some of the most challenging and high-pressure emergencies he's witnessed across his varied career and to offer some crucial, counter-intuitive insights into how the best teams and organisations succeed against the odds, learn from failure and go again. Antimicrobial stewardship has traditionally focused on optimizing antibiotic use to improve patient care, but growing attention to environmental sustainability is expanding how stewardship teams think about resource use. From the plastic waste generated during medication preparation and administration to opportunities to incorporate environmental considerations into antibiotic selection, stewardship offers a natural opportunity to address both clinical and environmental priorities.Dr. Pam Lee and Dr. Gary Fong developed EcoRxChoice.com, a free calculator designed to integrate environmental metrics into antimicrobial stewardship. The calculator estimates the amount of plastic waste associated with different antimicrobial regimens by accounting for materials used in medication preparation and administration. In their paper published in ASHE, "EcoRxChoice.com— an SIDP-funded calculator integrating environmental metrics with antimicrobial stewardship," the authors describe how they developed the calculator, including physically weighing items ranging from IV bags and tubing to needle hubs and medication packaging.In this episode, Dr. Lee and Dr. Fong discuss the origins of EcoRxChoice.com, the surprising amount of plastic waste generated through routine medication preparation, and how environmental impact can be incorporated into antimicrobial decision-making. There was no more trenchant and substantive critic of the Left from the Left in the 1960s and 1970s than Bayard Rustin. Some liberals and leftists today valorize Rustin on the basis of his multiple oppressed identities and civil rights organizing. On the other hand, many others dismiss him for being compromised by his commitment to the Democratic Party or by his deep suspicion of the new forms of left activism that appeared in the mid-1960s. While Rustin certainly made some strategic mis-steps later in life, his challenges to the New Left, Black Power, and a regressing liberal establishment from 1964 until his passing in 1987 were insightful, cutting, and often quite prescient. At a time when the Left is in dire need of self-reflection and reorientation, Rustin's work has gained a new relevance and urgency. In a new collection of Rustin's writings from this period, Fong and Prescod gathered together articles and speeches that represent Rustin's Challenge to the Left of his day. Some of the pieces of Rustin's writing chosen for inclusion have been published before, but only in pamphlets or newspapers from many decades ago. Some will be published for the first time here.The volume also includes commentaries on these pieces by Adolph Reed, Jr., Jennifer Silva, Les Leopold, Mark Dudzic, Jen Pan, John-Baptiste Oduor, and many others, all contextualizing Rustin's challenge and demonstrating its continuing applicability.
