Jason Williams had the world at his feet. Promised by AFL clubs in his draft year that they would pick him in the draft regardless of whether he sustained an injury. The draft came and went but his name wasn't called. The Rookie draft came and went, nothing. Jason soon after had to deal with the death of his father, the suicide of his mate and ultimately depression. Jason came out the other side with a beautiful perspective on life & ultimately found his passion in mentoring up and coming athletes with the experiences he has endured. This is one of those episodes as a host that you do more listening than talking. It's an emotionally honest and at the same time wholesome discussion and I hope that you can take something away from the chat with Jason Williams. --------
Guy Walker arguably lived the dream of every young aspiring athlete - a professional in two different sports (Cricket + AFL). Guy was one of those kids that could do it all - a master of everything he touched. After signing his professional cricket contract injuries started to take its toll on his young body. His fast-bowling skillset became more and more difficult. As a talented footballer, Guy was picked up by Melbourne Football Club as a Category B Rookie, but devastation in the first pre-season would ultimately end his career and force him into early retirement by age 24. I personally really enjoyed this chat with Guy about professional sport, the pressures, trials and tribulations, obligations of sporting bodies to their employees and the difficulties of transitioning into the 'real-world'. Hey, it's me, Robbie. I want to share my own story to give you some context of who I am and how I got to this point. I'm hoping it will give you some background about me, and hopefully about Off Court as a brand. My sole purpose of Off Court is to create a sports culture community and provide unique experiences, whether that be through media (this podcast) or merchandise down the line. This podcast will share many stories - athletes, professionals, people who have overcome huge odds to be successful, people who are shaping the sporting & business landscape, and ultimately people who are way more interesting than myself. But for now, this is me and we got here. --------
