In this episode of Danny Hurst´s Unusual Histories Podcast, he is joined by former Manchester City midfielder and football agent, Barry Silkman, who grew up in the East End. He shares his insights into what it was like then as well as how he became a professional football player despite there being quite a lot of prejudice against Jews at the time. Barry talks about the pubs, local characters (including The Krays) and how people from different cultures developed a close community. As you would expect there are also a few footballing insider stories. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS The area has changed so much that when Barry went back there 18 months ago at times he didn´t really know where he was. When Barry was a kid, the area was very Jewish. Now, not many Jews live there. Despite its bad reputation, the East End of Barry´s childhood was a very safe place. The community was quite mixed. There were differences but most people integrated so everyone got along. Petticoat Lane market, one of London’s oldest, was always very busy. Both of Barry´s parents worked there for many years. BEST MOMENTS “Now everyone's so wary .. the dimension of the East End has changed.” “I'm very proud of my heritage.” “Three out of four doors were wide open until 10 at night…There weren’t people getting mugged, getting stabbed.” “The first time I played against Spurs, it was just a strange feeling.” “What I went through being Jewish as a kid made me mentally and physically very strong, so nothing gets me down.” “A lot of our friends were Indian people from Brick Lane, because we went to school with them.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Silkman Petticoat Lane Market History - https://surveyoflondon.org/map/feature/1742/detail Demographics of Stepney - https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/Documents/Borough_statistics/Ward_profiles/SDSG-Ward-Profile.pdf Jewish Football Players - https://www.jta.org/2022/02/25/sports/british-jews-love-soccer-so-why-are-there-no-jews-in-the-premier-league https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cable_Street https://www.jewisheastend.com/garden.html HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Biographical Bytes from Bala #040 Mac Roy Jackson played college ball on one of the best Penn teams ever, then joined a professional league in Western Pennsylvania where he led a local team to a national championship. He may be better remembered as a master of the hounds and a judge of horse flesh. Nate Ramsey played nine years with some pretty mediocre Eagle teams but was voted by fans as their favorite Eagle to ever wear uniform #24. The problem was his legal difficulties, which plagued him before, after, and during his career. Herb Lusk was a running back who developed the habit of dropping to a knee and uttering a brief prayer after he scored a touchdown. He brought this habit with him to the pros and then quit after three seasons to become a very successful Baptist preacher. He was given a Super Bowl ring 39 years after his retirement. All three of these men are interred at Laurel Hill West.

Guest post by Graham Ruddick Tom Beahon wanted to be a professional football player when he was growing up. This was not an unusual ambition for a teenager in Merseyside, north-west England. After all, this is the home of Liverpool and Everton, two of the biggest and most successful teams in the history of English football. Beahon was talented enough to be on the books of his local team, Tranmere Rovers, who are the smaller local rivals to Liverpool and Everton and play in the fourth tier of professional football in England. However, a conversation when he was just 20 years old would change Beahon's life forever. "I remember extremely vividly being called into the manager's office at Prenton Park, which is the stadium of Tranmere Rovers," Beahon says. "I'm being told that they're not going to renew my contract. You're 20 to 21 years old. You don't have a lot of life experience. You have literally dedicated your life up until that point to becoming a professional footballer. You've made huge sacrifices." When your friends are going out, drinking, partying, and doing all the fun stuff that people should be doing - you didn't do any of that, because you wanted to be a professional footballer. Then someone has sat across the table from you and told you that dream is no longer a reality. That's a big moment. "For me, it was a big thing that I'd let my dad down. My dad had come to watch all of my games. He sacrificed his own career. He wouldn't be in the office for long hours because he would take me to football and my brother to cricket." Beahon's life was now at a crossroads. Professional sport is littered with stories of young people who were spat out of the system at a young age and struggled. They usually leave with no educational qualifications because until this point they have dedicated their life to the sport. This was the case for Beahon, "I think you can essentially go one of two ways," he says. "That pain hurts you so much that you never want to be out of your comfort zone ever again. You want to do something where you're in control of the environment. You don't strive, because if you don't strive, you can't fail. I think a lot of people do that and I don't blame them at all. "Alternatively, you can go the other way. To my mind - my little uneducated brain at 20 years old - the worst has happened. But you realise that the sun still rises the next day. So what it instilled in me was whatever I do, I need to be in control of my own destiny. I'm not getting called into the manager's office again. Failure doesn't scare me. I've failed. The worst has happened. What scares me is not being in control." This story is the origins of Castore, the sportswear brand. Beahon would go on to found Castore with his brother Phil. They have built it into a company that is worth around £1 billion and is one of the fastest-growing sports brands in the world. Castore makes the kits for the Red Bull and McLaren Formula One team, Everton in the Premier League, and the English cricket team. In 2024, Beahon was asked to join the Prime Minister's Business Council in the UK, a collection of business leaders who advise the government on policy. He was surrounded by the chief executives of the biggest companies in the country. "Often there's this misconception of entrepreneurs that you have this lightbulb moment and all of a sudden the world changes," says Beahon." It's very rarely like that. So to have this setback [with football] - that is probably the seminal moment in my life. I wouldn't change it for the world." Beahon, now powered by a steely determination to succeed, got a job working in finance for a bank in London. After the financial crisis and a sharp rise in university tuition fees, companies started offering apprenticeship-style schemes to those who couldn't afford to go to university. His brother Phil also got a job in London and they lived together. When they got home from work in the evening they started discussing business ideas. ...

What is the most mentally challenging position on the football or soccer pitch? Many people would argue it's the goalkeeper. Common psychological challenges goalkeepers face include; coping with mistakes and bouncing back strongly, dealing with tough and physical opponents, playing the ball out from the back with their feet in uncomfortable situations, communicating effectively with team-mates, selection issues and dealing with time on the bench. Today, Andy Elleray, an author and goalkeeping coach, who has worked for clubs such as Chelsea and Bristol Rovers tells me about mental toughness and how it applies to goalkeeping sharing some advice, I also provide a suggestion on how goalkeepers can help themselves remain calm and composed when faced with difficulties on the pitch. Key Learnings All goalkeepers make mistakes. Being able to accepts making mistakes and move on is a skill that goalkeepers can develop. Helping goalkeepers master the controllables is essential. Trigger words or physical triggers (using sweat bands or super-hero bands) can help goalkeepers move on more quickly from mistakes. Try the calm and composed face exercise to help you. When I was serving my church mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I was two weeks away from returning home after two years. The Boise State football program was playing TCU in the Fiesta Bowl that year, and I had the chance to watch that game from Brazil. The game ended after a Winston Venable interception of TCU's Andy Dalton. And I became an INSTANT Winston Venable fan from there on out (mind you that's the first time I had seen him play) Today I get to interview Winston as we dissect his football career, which was FAR from ordinary. It was a path that not many know or understand. It was unique. He wasn't just one of those "5-Star D1 Recruits" coming out of a big time high school. He had to take the unique journey to get to the Division 1 Level of football and he'll explain that to you today. What's also interesting in this conversation is hearing his experiences and his perspective on professional football. He had a chance to play in the NFL for the Chicago Bears organization as well as play in the CFL. Find out why he says the CFL was an overall 'better experience' as you listen in to today's episode! Again, I always ask that you take the time to take notes on this. Please pay attention to this unique story from one of the all-time greats from Boise State University! __________________ Come follow The Gametime Guru on the various social media platforms!
