On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome JD Barnes to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.   JD is a photographer who, although having lost complete vision in his right eye due to uveitis, takes pride in his ability to see beyond the typical and in doing so create something special every time he picks up his camera.    After returning to the states from a modeling career in Europe JD decided to pursue photography. With over 10 years of experience in the industry he has solidified a name for himself. His work has been featured in publications such as Essence, Harper's Bazaar, WWD, and Vogue UK to name a few. While he has photographed some of the most famous artists of today — Lizzo, Billy Porter, Regina King, Alicia Keys — he's as ambitious as ever and still pushing forward on his artistic journey.   JD believes "An artist walks by feeling, by emotion, by intuition. It's what separates us from the technicians of the world. There is no fear of wrong, only of mediocrity."    I was so honored to sit down and have this conversation with JD as he is someone who is very low-key & doesn't typically do interviews. My persistence paid off and I was able to get him on the FIB Podcast. I've been following his work for years and I knew that this conversation would be a treat for my photographers and other Friends in Beauty.    In this interview JD shares:   -How he got his start as a photographer -How his past as a model helps him as a photographer -How losing vision in his right eye affected his photography -Some pet peeves he has -How photographers can strengthen their skillset -Answers questions from the FIB community -How to protect your images from getting lost -And so much more   I really enjoyed this conversation with JD and I know you will too. These last few years of the pandemic have been an interesting time. While I would definitely hope to not do it again any time soon, there are a few things that have come out of the pandemic that have been amazing. One of those are the various virtual photographer hangouts I have been invited to, and the amazing people I have met through them. In one of these Zoom hangouts I met William Snyder, who was on the show with his Stevie Ray Vaughn album cover image, and in the same hangout I was also introduced to legendary Reuters photographer Gary Hershorn. When talking about Gary's career as a photojournalist you can get lost in the story alone, and then once you add his images to the story you are seemingly transported to amazing historical moments in time. Gary is a Canadian photographer and picture editor based in New York City, and his 43 year career began in 1979 at United Press International, in Toronto. By 1985 he was working at Reuters, as Chief Photographer, Canada, before moving to Washington, DC. in 1990. In his time at Reuters, Gary filled the roles of Senior Photographer, Picture Editor-Americas, and Global Sports Pictures Editor. He led major event coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the WTC, Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti Earthquake, along with covering numerous news, sporting championships and entertainment events around the world. Since leaving Reuters in 2014, he has worked as a photo editor for Flipboard, was the photo editor at FOXnews.com for 3 years and presently works in news curation for Facebook. In addition he is a contributing photographer for Getty Images. For those 43 years Gary has been photographing history, he has been taking us there with him in the process. In the summer of 2011, as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center approached, he began a photography project documenting New York City, the ever-changing skyline of the city as it entered a construction boom and began pairing the skyline of the city with various celestial events that happened in the skies over New York City. This work continues and led to the publication of the book “New York Celestial” in 2019. If you follow Gary on Instagram you will find one of the most inspirational feeds there is. I show Gary's current work to someone almost daily, and could study his photojournalistic work just as frequently. Today, I am excited to share one of his most historic images with you. Join legendary photojournalist, and all around great photographer, Gary Hershorn and me as we discuss what it was like to photograph the 2008 Obama Election Night Rally for Reuters, on this Behind the Shot. I knew he was destined for big things and when folks at the Golfers Journal and Golf Magazine came calling his status as one of golf's top photogs was quickly cemented. Today, he's raising a family and running point on all the photography for Golf Magazine/Golf.com while also working with some of the top brands in the sport. Those publications have never looked better as his work continues to evolve and impress. Hafer has been involved ina variety of other golf-related efforts including The Burning Cart Society( a personal favorite ) and I love hearing about what he's cooking up next. In this discussion, we touched on all sorts of creative concepts and of course talked in-depth about our love for golf, family, and the spiritual side of the game. While we've still never met in person, Hafer feels like an old friend. I think you'll walk away the same way after listening.  If you don't follow Hafer on Instagram you are missing out. I feel into media because a teacher once told me I wouldn't amount to anything unless I could find a job talking for a living. You can do that you know.It got me thinking about how our senior students are feeling this year. Stressed, ripped off, confused, so for the next month or so we're going to be talking to different people about their careers and how it came to be.I ended up working in the media for a lot of my working life thus far and In my experience, even in life generally, people change.Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.Sometimes, people don't change much at all. This week I'm chatting to one of these people. He's at the top of his game which is sports photography, he went to school in Swan Hill, he was a student at SuniTafe..He's also the same guy that I knew as kids. He has not changed. Not one bit. He passes it off as being lucky, but the passion of his descriptions and depth of his research suggests it's more about his genuine commitment and love of the profession. Join us as we discuss finding your passion and the power of believing in yourself. Nick shares how his confidence and skill set helped him truly realize his potential. Moreover, Nick shares his story of dropping out of college to pursue his passion full-time and shares some tips if you're debating doing the same thing. He even shares what it was like to share the decision with friends and family and how it all impacted his social life. Nick is one of the most humble and nice dudes one can ever hope to meet. Listen in as Nick humbly shares his crazy fast story of success and the many accolades and accomplishments he's already attained and he's not even 25 years old. You don't want to miss out on this incredible podcast where we learn about the power of positive thinking, hard work, and betting on yourself and your dreams. Nick Brown Bio: I have always been intrigued by art and design, but it wasn't until October of 2014 that I picked up a camera for the first time. Less than 6 months after taking my first photo on a DSLR, I won a statewide competition for photography, which qualified me for nationals. Over 20,000 students went into the photography competition at all the state levels, and I came out with 6th place honors at the national level. This was when I decided I was going to pursue photography not just as a hobby, but as a way to make a living. Thus two days after orientation for Computer Science at the University of Cincinnati, I decided to change my major to Photojournalism. Within the first week of class, I decided to get involved with the student newspaper, The News Record (TNR). The first event I shot for TNR was a soccer game, which was also the first time I had ever shot sports. I quickly adapted to shooting sports, and became the go-to guy for sports for TNR. By the time second semester rolled around, there was an opening for the Chief Photographer spot. Through all the hard work I put in for sports and other events, I was honored with receiving the position of Chief Photographer for TNR as a freshman. Through my first three semesters at UC, over 300 of my photos were published in print at The News Record. I covered an array of exciting events like Bill Clinton visiting Cincinnati, the 2016 Men's Basketball American Athletic Conference Championship in Orlando, Florida, covering the pro-soccer team FC Cincinnati, and shooting a Cleveland Cavaliers game. Currently I am in my second year at UC, but I have decided to take a semester off from college and step down from the Chief Photographer position at TNR. Why you may ask? First and foremost I can't afford to go into further debt. Oh, and I also started a photography business that I'm trying to get to gain more traction. In September of 2016, I started up a photography business with my friend Michael Millay called Cincy Rooted. We developed in the Cincinnati area and kept on growing very quickly. Thus in the summer of 2017, we changed our name to Rooted Media House, making it easier for us to expand beyond the Cincinnati region, while still staying true to our city by keeping rooted in the name. You can continue to learn about my journey by heading over to our website: www.RootedMediaHouse.com
