Why Community? It's easy to feel despair about climate change and environmental destruction. But despair can make it hard to forge connections and take action. According to emotion researchers, hope means believing that you have the power to improve problems, rather than ignoring them. One possible source of hope? Community building events, where diverse groups of activists can find common ground. What is Bioneers?Climate Break spoke with Teo Grossman, Senior Director of Programs and Research for the longstanding environmental conference Bioneers, about how community building events like the Bioneers conference foster hope and catalyze action. Now in its 34th year, Bioneers is an interdisciplinary environmental organization whose annual conference brings together environmental advocates and innovators from a wide variety of disciplines to share stories and brainstorm solutions. Grossman joined Bioneers in 2014 but first spoke there while still a college student in the early 2000s. He says his time at Bioneers has convinced him that community events and storytelling are powerful tools for change. Bioneers's HistoryThroughout its history, Bioneers has been home to new ways of thinking about environmental activism. The annual conference helped spawn major climate organizations like 350.org and inspired some of Michael Pollan's early work on the food system. Grossman also highlights its role in advancing the Rights of Nature legal movement. Rights of Nature seeks to recognize nature itself – like bodies of water and endangered species – as having legal rights. In 2008, Bolivia became the first country to include explicit rights for nature in their constitution. Other countries have since followed suit. Bioneers TodayBioneers has expanded since its inception, and now includes year round media and educational programming in addition to its annual conference. Grossman says they're especially proud of their Native-led Indigeneity Program, which includes youth leadership scholarships and forums. This year's conference includes speakers from throughout the world of climate and environmental justice, including political scientist Leah Stokes, clean-tech entrepreneur Danny Kennedy, and One Fair Wage President Saru Jayaraman. Also on the agenda? Conversations about the role fiction writing and narrative can play in restoring hope to the environmental movement, hosted by science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson and essayist Rebecca Solnit. Bioneers is holding its annual conference April 6-8 in Berkeley. You can learn more about the conference on their website.Other Resources for Finding CommunityIn addition to Bioneers, there are plenty of other ways to find hope and connect with the environmental movement. Interested in making decarbonization your job? Resources like Climatebase and Work on Climate offer centralized job listings and career support. You can also seek workshops and seminars to hear new perspectives on environmental issues. International organizations like Resources for the Future host lectures and workshops to highlight ongoing research, while in the Bay Area, local groups like the SF Federal Reserve and the Commonwealth Club's Climate One host lectures both in person and online. Looking for ways to take direct action? Databases like the CA Climate Action Portal map climate action by local government. Research the climate action – or inaction – your local government is doing to find ways to get involved. You may be able to attend public meetings for your energy providers, where you can meet other constituents and advocate for just and renewable energy. For example, San Francisco CCA Clean Power SF holds regular meetings over zoom that are welcome to the public. To go even bigger, attend public meetings by statewide regulatory agencies like the CPUC, which oversees the rates and investments of California utilities like PG&E. About the GuestTeo Grossman is Senior Director of Programs and Research for Bioneers, where he helps lead both conference development and Bioneers's year-round media production. He studied environmental science and management as a Doris Duke Conservation Fellow at UC Santa Barbara and first began working with Bioneers as a Program Manager in the early 2000s. Given the enormity of climate change and the unprecedented opportunity for innovation that comes with decarbonization, I love learning about ambitious efforts that really take seriously the speed and scale at which we need to invest in change. I've long been a fan of New Energy Nexus – an organization that aims to make clean energy accessible to everyone by supporting 100,000 climate entrepreneurs. They take an ecosystem approach, recognizing that entrepreneurs need not just cash, but supportive networks to succeed, and they've been building up ecosystems all over the world to support diverse entrepreneurs.I was thrilled to learn more about New Energy Nexus and one of their best-known accelerators Third Derivative, which is a partnership with RMI. In this episode, you'll hear from Nexus' founder and CEO, Danny Kenedy, and Third Derivative co-founder and CMO, Elaine Hsieh. We talk about their backgrounds, the work that Nexus and Third Derivative are doing, their approach to ecosystem building, the importance of justice, equity, and inclusion in climate investing, underhyped and overhyped spaces in climate tech, and much more. Third Derivative is currently accepting applications through March 21 for its next two cohorts - so if you're a startup founder, consider putting in an application. For everyone else, hope you enjoy. While Harry burns his bridges and asks the family to jump into the void, the UK and EU seem to imagine that if the word 'breakthrough' is used no-one will look too much at the detail. In both instances the truth is out there, somewhere, just not as real as you are asked to imagine. It isn't clear who the audiences for the outbreak of truths is trying to convince of the veracity to their accounts. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Politics is increasingly conducted in the moment of the last Tweet rather than the reality of life for the people impacted. No wonder politicians struggle to cut through and populists that feed on concerns and fears gain from this - nationalism feeds of division and shifting the blame onto Westminster and offering milk and honey if only.... While a General Election may be two years away, local elections will bring back political uncertainty and pressures on main parties. For Sunak and Starmer it will be a battle of energising their core vote, as few others might be inspired to be bothered to go to the voting booth. In Northern Ireland we may get two for one; an Assembly election along with the necessary Local Government poll. There will be some who might hope that would boost the UUP which performs well at local government level, largely due to long-standing personal votes. But the European Election should have put paid to that idea - although well-liked, the UUP's Danny Kennedy crashed in the European poll. The DUP will not fear an election. Everyone else will see it as another chance to beat up on the DUP without offering anything much. Plus ca change.
Infravision co-founder and CEO Cameron Van Der Berg believes technology will play a vital role in revolutionising high voltage grid transmission lines. Infravision set out to drag a traditional slow moving trillion dollar transmission industry into the future, by using drones to string. Cameron and his team are innovating by partnering with progressive grids, moving the industry forward, faster, cheaper and safer applying the 10X rule to a slow changing industry. Danny knows the Infravision business well, starting at EnergyLab in Sydney and supporting their entry into the US. You'll hear a deeper perspective on the Infravision journey through Danny's observation as they share lessons on the challenges of setting up operations in the US to meet growing demand and how hard tech is achievable in the high stakes high voltage transmission industry. Danny will also share an update on our industry more broadly. This year is looking increasingly like a breakthrough year in Climate Tech.

The COP 27 summit in Sharm-El-Sheikh is welcoming world leaders and climate negotiators to Egypt. In a year that has been rocked by the war in Ukraine and global economic instability, can COP refocus the world's attention on climate? Tom Heap and Matt McGrath will take a look back at some of the pledges made last November in Glasgow for COP 26 to find out whether countries across the world are keeping to the agreements made on areas such as deforestation, methane reduction, finance and technology. Everyone agrees that current geopolitics will make significant global agreements to decrease emissions difficult but there may be signs of hope in the actions of individual countries. Tom and Matt will try to decipher where we are and what we might be able to expect from this years ‘Conference of the Parties'. To help them pick through the details our panel of experts include Bernice Lee from Chatham House, Danny Kennedy from New Energy Nexus, Mia Moisio from Climate Action Tracker, Piers Forster from the University of Leeds and Ben Caldecott from the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group. In this Spark Club podcast we'll hear how United States is turning on. I recorded interviews in the last week October at the Verge22, the largest climate tech conference in North America held in San Jose California. Climate tech bucking the investment trend and the Binden Administration unlocking an enormous amount of government funding. We'll hear an opening address from Secretary Granholm and then have perspectives from Danny Kennedy from NewEnergyNexus, followed by Mick Liubinskas from Climate Salad. As you'll hear, it's an exiting time to be in the clean tech sector.

In this Spark Club podcast, recorded live at EnergyLab in June 2022, we shine a light on the Lithium Battery sector. Australian raw materials are playing a key role in this vital industry in the energy transition, but can we do more? We have an amazing panel, Danny Kennedy from New Energy Nexus, Katja Digweed from the CSIRO, Mark Chilcote CEO at Energy Renaissance and Christiaan Jordaan from Sicona and Novolith join us for this fascinating conversation on the Lithium Battery ecosystem Australia, and the potential to harness so much more in the six stages of lithium battery production.
Chances are you've probably not given much thought to the power supplying your favourite local venue or festival. It is, however, an area that's absolutely vital when it comes to live music forging a more sustainable future. This week we're joined by live music energy consultant Tim Benson - Smart Power, ZAP and Powerful Thinking - to hear about where and how venues get their energy, the adoption of technology in live events and how measuring a production's electricity use is key to bringing down its environmental impact. He's also worked on Coldplay's current Music Of The Spheres world tour, and discusses their much-discussed kinetic dance floor and the transformative role sustainable technologies can play in creating culture change if they're incorporated into the audience experience at a concert. Hosts Fay and Greg also leave you with some recommendations. More detail below. — Sounds Like A Plan series 3 is supported by Festival Republic. Quantum Quote: “A quadrupling of clean energy activity is what we need - and where we're headed.” - Danny Kennedy Clean energy is the answer to our environmental crises and is the key to unlocking a healthy and clean future. But, it is somewhat still inaccessible to different countries across the world. How can clean energy bring about a prosperous economy despite the drawbacks of the pandemic? How can clean energy give us the potential as individuals, as a country, and as a civilization? Listen to today's episode and get to know how we can do it all! Danny sees a bright future with clean energy ditching fossil fuels and benefiting everyone in our homes, jobs and communities. Hear about the incredible economic potential in doing the most important work in world history. Danny Kennedy is the CEO of New Energy Nexus, a non-profit which connects entrepreneurs everywhere with capital to build an abundant clean energy economy that benefits all. Kennedy also co-founded Sungevity in 2007, the fifth-largest distributed solar installer in the United States. He has also served as the managing director of the California Clean Energy Fund (an early-investor in Tesla), which includes overseeing the $25 million Cal Seed Fund. His journey into clean energy started back in the 20th century. He started his solar company in 2007 and has been involved with a number of additional startups, including the solar financing company Mosaic. He sees clean energy as the answer to the extreme climate crisis, and a huge opportunity in uplifting potential for communities everywhere, with job creation, wealth creation, and leadership opportunities for everyone. SuperNova #1. “Be aware that the world is changing much more rapidly than we realize in terms of the commanding heights of the economy.” - Danny Kennedy SuperNova #2. “For the entrepreneur, pick your path in this amazing clean energy opportunity and find a niche, because that niche is going to become very big. Every day, get up and execute against that opportunity. Do the work. The balls in your court. Stay focused, my friend, and you'll do fine.” - Danny Kennedy SuperNova#3. “You just always have to stay focused on your goals and your business and doing the next thing and the next thing. It's many days of work that make a great week and month, and it's many weeks and months of great and hard work that make for a successful year in a business - and a career and professional life.” - Danny Kennedy Aha! Moment: “The “Aha!” that caused me to jump ship from my previous career to start my own company was when Google Earth first came out - circa 2006. For the first time, you could look at the world from the satellite images that they were stitching together. And it was, “Wow, that's amazing!” My “Aha!” with a mate was sitting around drinking beer here in Australia, saying, “Seeing this Google Earth thing, isn't it cool? Wonder if we could do the design and engineering phase of the solar sales process online.” Sure enough, we found a software guru that did all the maths and whatever trigonometry was required - and we created remote solar sizing.” - Danny Kennedy Worst Energy Moment: “There were moments where we were running right up against it on payroll back in the twenty-teens. A fast-growing solar company stretching itself. Anxious nights lying awake worrying about the people, the team that we built, and all that sort of stuff. In those moments you realize it can always get worse, it could come off the tracks - so just keep focused and do what you need to do.” - Danny Kennedy Best Advice He's Ever Received: “To marry my now wife.” - Danny Kennedy Personal Habits that Contribute to Success: “I am a big early riser. I believe that getting up and going hard is a good way to get things done.” - Danny Kennedy Internet Resources: newenergynexus.com www.thecleanfight.com Book Recommendation: Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman Magic Wand: “Social media. I would get them off the drip of dopamine responsiveness and let them get information at a high level. Technology is wonderful when it allows us to share across borders, instantaneously and all that good stuff. But we need to do it without the advertising addiction that has actually created so much distress and depression and despoiled our democracies and all the rest of it.” - Danny Kennedy WTF or F: “You know, I'm an Australian Californian, so fire season comes to mind just in the last couple of years. I mean, having seen it on both sides of the Pacific, it's kind of tragic. I also worked in the Pacific in the 2000 era, and there was a Cyclone that swept through some small islands 1000 miles north of New Zealand. It was 150% wind speeds of anything previously recorded, and a huge storm surge and his frightening supercharged force of nature.” - Danny Kennedy Most Energized about Today: ‘I am most energized about the opportunity in Indonesia. I know that sounds obscure, but you know, think about that huge country, which is about the size of the United States in population, and has had almost no solar today.” - Danny Kennedy Parting Advice: “Get involved in this economic opportunity. It's also the most important work we can do ever in history. This decade decides the fate of civilization. I'm not a doomsayer. I don't believe it's the end of the world. I think we have a world without an end here. But a millennium from now, we will look back at the start of the 21st century as humans and say, "What the hell were they doing?" Or "Thank God, they did that." - Danny Kennedy Connect: Website: https://www.newenergynexus.com/ Email Address: danny.kennedy@newenergynexus.com Email Address: virtual.assistant@newenergynexus.com Twitter: @dannyksfun
You may have seen a couple of weeks ago that I joined legend Danny Kennedy on his own chart-topping podcast, The Fitness And Lifestyle Podcast, and if you've ever listened to it before you'll know he is a FOUNTAIN of knowledge giving people a fresh, simple approach to wellbeing and fitness and helping them achieve incredible results. In a few short weeks, he's already helped me enormously and if you watch my stories you'll see I've doubled the weight I'm lifting already, so I figured especially as we enter Summer and the silly season of splurges is upon us, we'd get him on to share some of his wisdom. He's a certified strength and conditioning coach with a cert ¾ in fitness and diploma in sport and management and is all about flexibility and sustainability when it comes to workouts and nutrition. With a background in many different sports, injury led him to try his hand on stage as a men's physique athlete which helped him develop his expansive knowledge on healthy weight control, leaning up and building strength. He's also the trainer for Keep it Cleaner alongside the amazing Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw along with many other big names in the community which is a testament to his talents. So excited to have him on the show to share some of his top tips and how he seizes his yay. + Full show notes here + Find DK's podcast here + See DK's website here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
