What happens when a police canine is given just two weeks to live? For Chris Bingham, Tambo's cancer diagnosis became more than a fight for survival. It became a story of loyalty, hope, healing, and reconciliation. In this episode of the Starter Girlz Podcast, Jennifer Loehding sits down with Chris Bingham, veteran law enforcement officer and handler to retired federal police K9 Tambo, for a powerful conversation about the bond between a handler and his canine partner. Tambo was once labeled difficult to bond with. But Chris saw something deeper in him—a reflection of his own story, his own wounds, and his own desire to be seen beyond the labels placed on him. After Tambo was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer and given about two weeks to live, Chris chose to fight for more time. What followed was a journey that inspired thousands, reached people facing cancer themselves, and unexpectedly helped Chris reconnect with his father before it was too late. This is a story about loyalty under pressure, the healing power of second chances, and the way one dog's fight became bigger than anyone could have imagined. ⭐ About Chris Bingham Chris Bingham is a veteran law enforcement officer, K9 handler, author, and advocate for retired police and military working dogs. His partnership with retired federal police K9 Tambo has become a powerful story of loyalty, resilience, and hope after Tambo was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. For many law enforcement officers, the bond they share with a K-9 partner becomes one of the most important relationships of their career. The trust built through years of training, dangerous assignments, and daily companionship often creates a connection that extends far beyond the job. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Federal Police Officer Chris Bingham knows that bond well. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. #Free #Podcast #Radio During his law enforcement career in Maryland, Bingham worked alongside Tambo, an explosives detection K-9 whose dedication, courage, and loyalty left a lasting impact not only on the communities they protected but also on the officer who called him his partner. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. "Tambo wasn't just my K-9 partner," Bingham said. "He was my teammate, my protector, and one of the best friends I've ever had." Throughout their years together, Tambo played a critical role in detecting explosives, searching for threats, and helping safeguard fellow officers and members of the public. Like many working police dogs, he performed his duties without seeking recognition or praise. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. The show is inspiring audiences through the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple, Spotify, iHeartradio and and many Podcast platforms. "He simply showed up every day ready to work," Bingham recalled. "There was never a complaint, never a bad attitude. He just gave everything he had." More Than a Working Dog The relationship between a police K-9 and handler is unlike most partnerships in law enforcement. Handlers often spend more time with their dogs than they do with friends or even family members. Their lives become intertwined through shared experiences, training, deployments, and moments of danger. Trust becomes second nature. Lives depend on it. For Bingham, Tambo was far more than a working dog. He was family. When Tambo's law enforcement career unexpectedly ended because of an injury, the transition into retirement brought both relief and uncertainty. The two remained inseparable, enjoying Tambo's slower pace of life while reflecting on years of service together. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. Then everything changed. A Devastating Diagnosis After retirement, Tambo was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive and often deadly form of cancer. Despite undergoing emergency life-saving surgery and continuing chemotherapy treatments, the prognosis was grim. Yet throughout the battle, Tambo continued to demonstrate the same resilience that had defined his law enforcement career. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. For Bingham, watching his longtime partner face terminal illness became one of the most difficult experiences of his life. Yet even as the disease progressed, Tambo continued teaching lessons. "As strange as it sounds, Tambo was still teaching me every day," Bingham said. "Even when he was sick." Living in the Moment One lesson stood out above all others. Tambo taught Bingham the importance of living in the present. Dogs do not spend their days dwelling on past mistakes or worrying about an uncertain future. Instead, they focus on the people they love and the moments they are given. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. "He never felt sorry for himself," Bingham explained. "Even when he was struggling physically, he greeted every day with excitement. He wanted to be with his family. He wanted to enjoy life." The experience caused Bingham to reevaluate his own outlook. "Tambo showed me that we often waste too much energy worrying about things we can't control," he said. "He taught me to appreciate what is right in front of me." The Meaning of Loyalty If there was one characteristic that defined Tambo throughout his life, it was loyalty. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. Whether responding to security threats, recovering from injury, adapting to retirement, or battling cancer, Tambo's devotion never wavered. "His loyalty was unconditional," Bingham said. "It didn't matter what kind of day I was having. Tambo was always there." The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. That unwavering commitment became a powerful reminder of the qualities that truly matter in life—faithfulness, compassion, and love. Strength Through Adversity As Tambo continued his cancer treatments, Bingham discovered another lesson that would stay with him forever. True strength is often quiet. Many people associate strength with physical ability, power, or accomplishment. Tambo demonstrated a different kind of strength, one rooted in perseverance, courage, and grace. "He taught me that strength isn't about never suffering," Bingham said. "It's about how you carry yourself when you are suffering." The lesson extended far beyond police work. Tambo taught resilience. He taught gratitude. He taught compassion. Most importantly, he taught Bingham how to become a better human being. "The biggest lesson wasn't about being a better police officer," Bingham reflected. "It was about being a better human being." The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. A Legacy That Lives On Because retired police and military working dogs often lose access to government-funded healthcare benefits after service, many families face overwhelming veterinary costs. In Tambo's case, his cancer treatments have been funded through the nonprofit organization Project K9 Hero, allowing him to continue receiving the care he needs. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. As Bingham reflects on their years together, he believes the true measure of a life is not found in awards, promotions, or accomplishments. Instead, it is found in loyalty, kindness, and the lives touched along the way. For police handlers across America, K-9s are never simply dogs. They are partners. They are family. They are heroes. And even after their service ends, the lessons they leave behind continue shaping the lives of those who loved them. Today, Bingham is sharing Tambo's inspiring story with a new generation through his children's book, K9 Tambo, available through Amazon and other booksellers. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. "Tambo's legacy isn't just about what he did as a working dog," Bingham said. "It's about the example he set every single day through loyalty, courage, and unconditional love." In the end, Tambo's greatest achievement may not have been the explosives he detected or the countless people he helped protect. Lessons From a Police K-9: How One Explosives Detection Dog Changed a Federal Officer's Life Forever. His greatest achievement may have been teaching one federal police officer, and countless others, what it truly means to live a life of purpose. - Ergebnislos. R22 million for statues: President Ramaphosa unveils two major monuments in Durban

President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially unveiled two major monuments in Durban, honouring liberation struggle icons Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela. The nine-metre bronze statue of Tambo, the ANC's first president, now stands along the beachfront, while a second statue of Mandela was unveiled at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The two structures cost a combined R22 million, with eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba reflecting on the historical weight of the beachfront site, reminding attendees that it was there, just two weeks after his release from prison, that Mandela called for an end to violence, urging people to “throw pangas, spears and guns into the sea.” However, the unveiling has sparked political debate. The DA's eThekwini mayoral candidate, Hanif Hoosen, led a beachfront demonstration, arguing that the funds should have prioritised fixing failing sewer infrastructure, particularly amid ongoing concerns about sewage flowing into the ocean. The municipality maintains the statues were funded through the city's tourism budget and not from service-delivery allocations. Public sentiment also shares the same frustration that with thousands of social ills in the metro, why is R22 million being directed to such a project. Here's what you had to say about it...

Biographical Bytes from Bala: Laurel Hill West Stories #051, part 3   Born in 1848 in New York to French immigrant parents, Frank Dumont became a seminal figure in minstrel culture. He began to perform as a boy and joined Christy's Minstrels by 1862, a troupe that set the enduring standard format for minstrel shows: a semicircle stage arrangement with an interlocutor (emcee) in the center and end men characters Mr. Tambo and Mr. Bones at the sides. The interlocutor opened the show with the phrase, “Gentlemen, be seated,” which became iconic. Dumont later joined other minstrel troupes and eventually settled in Philadelphia around 1880, where he introduced popular songs such as “Silver Threads Among the Gold” and “When You and I Were Young, Maggie,” both significant sentimental ballads of the era. He "died with his boots on," as it were as he sat in the box office for a St. Patrick's Day matinee.

What happens when the bond between a K9 handler and his retired working dog is tested by something no training can prepare them for? In this episode, federal law enforcement officer Chris Bingham shares the powerful, behind-the-scenes story of his retired K9 partner, Tambo — a dog who served with unwavering loyalty and is now facing one of the toughest battles a family can experience: hemangiosarcoma, a fast-moving and often terminal diagnosis in dogs. Chris describes how he and Tambo first became partners, how their bond deepened over years of working side by side, and what it really looks like to help a working dog transition into retirement after a lifetime of service. But what makes Chris and Tambo's story especially compelling is how they've chosen to respond to hardship. Rather than turning inward, they've become a source of strength and encouragement for others — offering support to both dogs and humans facing life-altering health challenges. Their journey also highlights the critical role organizations like Project K9 Hero play in supporting retired working dogs who no longer have funding for their care.  This episode offers an intimate and honest look at the loyalty, responsibility, and deep connection between a handler and his dog. It's a story of resilience in the face of devastating news, of a working dog's enduring legacy, and of the unexpected ways humans and animals continue to lift one another up through the hardest chapters of life. In this powerful episode,my guest is Chris Bingham, a federal law enforcement officer with 23 years of service and 17 years as a K-9 handler. In this heartfelt conversation, Chris shares his journey with Tambo, his retired K9 partner, who is battling cancer. K9 Tambo is a remarkable 11-year-old German Shepherd whose life has been defined by dedication, courage, and service. Born with a strong working drive and intelligence, Tambo was selected early on for a career in law enforcement as an Explosive Detection K9 within the Federal Police's Law Enforcement Intelligence Community. Over the course of approximately seven years, Tambo distinguished himself as an invaluable asset in one of the East Coast's busiest and most successful K9 units. Discover how Project K9 Hero, a national nonprofit founded by Jason Johnson, has twice saved Tambo's life - first funding surgery for an ACL tear, and later emergency surgery when Tambo faced a life-threatening ruptured mass on his spleen. This episode explores the profound, unspoken bond between handler and canine, the challenges facing retired service dogs, and one man's mission to be "a voice for the voiceless." This week we cast our net wide for versions of the classic  "Too Many Fish in the Sea." The original by The Marvelettes is still a fresh catch -- it's a classic Motown 'advice' song with punchy instrumentation, top Tambo and a great sound-off from all the members. Marine biologists might prefer our next version by Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, which includes a roll call of different types of actual fish! The next morsel of metaphorical fish food comes from our friends The Gallows, with the powerful lungs and unusual vocal hiccups of Bruce Kettlitz. It'll make you jump!! The market in 1983 offered up a great rendition by Patti Brooks. It's a long journey (almost 5 minutes) but it's full of hooks, which you need on a fishing trip. Plus it has a nice vocal appearance by our new favourite Alfonso (Fonzi) Thornton. Finally, we reel in a 2010 version by Phil Collins, which we hoped would have some of the fairy dust of his Supremes cover. Don't throw it back, though - it's still substantial! Halibut !

And if you're out there listening and you would like to kick in a few bucks, there are several ways to do so – you can make a one-time contribution via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). You can also provide support the show using Patreon, via the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three bucks a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee! IMPORTANT NOTE:  Apple is slapping a ridiculous 30% fee on all Patreon transactions using an iPhone or iPad to access the Patreon app.  The workaround is to access Patreon dot com directly, or to use an Android device.  So avoid using the app if you're an Apple person. I wanna say that I am actively working on better ways to support the show, and I appreciate your patience in the meantime! And thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. -Mike
