Exploring new music and musical influences of well known artists and Dj's. Curated by KGBK. Mild Erotica.
Warm up for Beirut Electro Parade @ La Bellevilloise, Paris 23.06///23
For proper summer vibes please welcome a Detroit based DJ and producer, half of Looky Looky - Jeffrey Sfire (@jeffreysfire), who, as always, will be talking us through his most influential tracks. Play it loud, educate your neighbours.
Even though we are finally getting close to the hottest months of the year, on this occasion we would like you to get more familiar with December. In one of those "it's not what it seems" kind of episodes, Tomas More shares the kind of music that inspires his gritty, raw, emotional and melancholic productions.
Leonard Prochazka is a multi-disciplinary artist from Vienna, currently based in Rotterdam. Leonard's projects - Marie and Geier Aus Stahl always leave a mark on the listener, and we invite you to have a listen to the music that has made the most impact on these productions. This is an hours of musical influences that have shaped the tastes of Geier Aus Stahl.
Happy new year! Let's get this one going with some noise. Joining us for the latest episode is LDY OSC - a musician, DJ and software engineer. LDY OSC presents her influences while juxtaposing against some of her projects and productions.
Coming straight from Helsinki, Finland - Kristiina Männikkö talks about the influences that helped to shape her tastes in music. Everything from catchy italo to aggressive techno with some more leftfield stuff sprinkled in between.
Konstantinas is flying solo one more time this season with an hard and aggressive selection, up until the point it stops being so
Show put together while still trying to find a way to live with what is happening Tracklist - https://lyl.live/episode/parabox-18
KGBK takes over, with no guest and no reason to celebrate. I hope everyone is safe and will continue to be. Just like the news this episode goes through many emotions in a short time. Full Tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-17
KGBK is flying solo this month with a selection of music for all your cleaning/work out/background music needs (underline where necessary), or if you are a lucky one - pre-party/after-party. Bangers and slow burners from all around the world. Full tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-16
For the last show before the summer break we invited Vilma Rae, a London based Greek DJ, into our studio. Expect Italo, Giallo, Disco and more from the second hour, in addition to stories from Vilma, and more experimental, psychedelic and a few dance floor friendly tracks from myself in the first one. Tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-15
Alan Currall is an artist, arts teacher, researcher, photographer and a musician. Based outside of a big town, Alan creates musical soundscapes that sound inspired by the landscapes he sees. In terms of musical influences - this is something he shares with us in the second hour of this show. Responsibly recorded at a distance of 600km. Tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-14
Flying solo this month, thanks to state of the world right now. Expect an emotionally reflective selection within the two hours of the show. No talking. Hope all is well. Full tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-13
Mid autumn Parabox slows down slightly, almost preparing for the winter hibernation during the first hour. In the second one we welcome Hainbach, a musician and a visual content producer for Youtube, talking all things experimental music production, recording and sound design. Hainbach will let us in on the music that has inspired his style of production and taste. This episode was responsibly produced over the distance of 1100KM.
Au revoir, summer. Hope to never see you like this ever again. It's not you, I promise. Hope you understand. But some things happening during the summer have indeed influenced my selection, quite a bit, I think. Not all bad news though, a London crew has decided to launch a label - Sonorous Chamber. Its founders, Kirsty and Henry, are joining us for an influence selection. May the music heal us all. Tracklist at - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-12/
These are truly uneasy times, and I really hope that this episode finds you healthy. I picked up a few tracks, that I resonate with a lot lately. We did not skip on the influence selection for the second hour, and joining us for it is Hadi Zeidan. Hadi is an amazing musician, curator, who has managed to take us on a trip to a country, which you might not have visited previously. It is a valuable experience for us all, during the days, when we have to stay inside. Tracklist - https://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-11/
If you live in or have visited London in the past, you are probably familiar with Snap Crackle & Pop evenings. Gathering crowds for intimate DJ and live electronic performances at the infamous Waiting Room and bringing you the most underrated and fresh bands at Moth club as well as taking over other venues for their nights. Marcus Harris is the resident DJ and promoter for SC&P, and he is going to tell us what has inspired him to explore the sounds he brings to all of us. His selection in the second hour follows a few tracks that have been very important to me.
It came as a shock. I still wish that this is a mistake or a misunderstanding... Andrew came in to do our 3rd episode, when we had no following and nobody really cared about this project. He loved the concept. A bit shy at first, but then all of the stories started pouring out. I could listen to them for the entire day, really. Some of them are in this recording. I have taken out my hour, and the old jingles I used to use. Listening back to this brings a lot of memories, and the music he played is definitely timeless. Writing is not my specialty, and I did not know Andrew that well to be honest, to put together a long text about him. I do, however, have this recording of him going through, what he thought at the time, his biggest musical influences. A short autobiography, narrated and soundtracked. I wanted there to be nothing else but him. He left three records when leaving the studio. We spoke about trying to arrange a meeting for me to bring them, as well as take a few of his pictures using an old soviet Liubitel camera, which he thought looked great when he saw it. But either he was away, busy, or we did not have the film for the camera or time to do it. I am sorry that I never gave the records back, and also sorry that we did not take any pictures, which you really wanted. At times like these you wish there was a world beyond our own, but you can't really know. If none of us ever see you again, at least we have something to remember you from. Thank you, and rest in peace.
The first show of the decade is also the 4th birthday of the project, and to celebrate, Flora Pitrolo, also known as A Colder Consciousness is visiting. Flora hosts her radio show on Resonance FM and Kanal 103, having previously interviewed people like Daniel Miller and runs ACC records, a label which you should absolutely check out. She, as always, will take over the second hour of the show to give us a list of her own special and influential records, while in the first I dig into my personal collection for tracks that I have recently discovered or rediscovered.
Flying solo for the last show of 2019, expect mechanical, dark and rhythmic tracks, some punk vocals as well as early and late experiments in music. Full tracklist - https://lyl.live/episode/parabox-8/
With rainclouds now occupying more of our sky, days shortening and temperatures going down, there is no better way to “medicate” than through music. In the second hour we are joined by Scanner, an alias of Robin Rimbaud, to go an a journey of the music that left the biggest impact on him. Robins output is unique and his concerts are usually a one time experience, due to non linearity of his performances. He has a massive discography, that will keep you entertained long after you finish this episode, and we highly recommend you check it all out. As for the first hour, I have decided to try something else. This will be an hour of soundtracks made for computer games. Recognisable titles and weird indies, ambient, industrial, EBM, all of this and more in todays episode. Make yourself a large cup of tea, get that blanket out and enjoy! Tracklist : https://lyl.live/episode/parabox-7/
One more show before our summer holidays. This one will make sure we go with a bang. Thomas van Linge, also known as Randstad, joins us with his special influence selection from the Hague artists. Reminiscing about the good times and setting up for some great ones to come. I shall throw in some classics, some recently obtained ones, and just music that you would not play to your grandparents. Hope you enjoy! Tracklist -http://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-6/
Head of ICR and a prolific producer, whose career started back in 1980 - Colin Potter is joining us for his own selection of tracks that are important. Well known for his production of ambient and experimental electronica, Colin brings a different selection, breaking away from his stereotype in the best traditions of Parabox. His selection follows a few tracks that have been stuck with me for some time now. Tracklist - https://lyl.live/episode/parabox-5/
Vactrol Park members Kyle Martin and Guido Zen take over Parabox this time to take us through the music that matters most to them. Ambient, slow and big synth tracks along with stories and shared experiences is what waits you in the second hour, following a selection from myself. Tracklist: http://lyl.live/episode/parabox-4/
Parabox is 3 years old now. This is also our 3rd episode on LYL Radio. We decided to celebrate it by playing 3 minute “radio” length tracks, that could have become pop, but never did, from the 80s. Helping us celebrate is your favourite Emotional label owner – Stuart Leath, joining us for the second hour for an influence selection. Tracklist - http://lyl.live/episode/parabox-3/
Some old, new, gritty and bold music followed by with Grisha Nelyubin, half of Odopt, joining us in the second hour to run through his life of music for the last episode of the year, recorded in Sameheads Berlin. Tracklist - http://www.lyl.live/episode/parabox-2/
Relaunching on LYL Radio! Post summer vibes including an influence selection from one of the hottest players in the scene right now - Curses. Track list at http://lyl.live/episode/parabox/
Getting very warm out there already. Trenton Chase, therefore, comes at the perfect time. Producing cold wave, minimal, electronic sounds to warm our hearts up even further. He is half of a very well known label June Records, releases of which often demand prices well beyond the retail on Discogs. He is also half of Manie Sans Délire, a project looking back at what we missed many years ago, yet reimagined for the times we live in. Being minimal/wave listeners, we are looking forward to this influence selection. As usual, in the second part of the show, straight after some new and old, known and forgotten music from our HQ
Rising temperatures are starting to melt our cold hearts. The only way to celebrate this for us is to bring you a company of two talented producers. Laura and Andrea are part of an exciting project, probably already well known to you - As Longitude. You probably also know Andrea as Eva Geist, who has just released a phenomenal album full of minimal electronic gems and ambient experiences. As Longitude have release a 5 track EP on Knekelhuis, which is in very short supply even on reseller websites and demands a bit of an investment. Blauer Part is a fantastic collection of well balanced minimalism, sound design and experimentation. I really hope they are working on the next release, or better yet, a full album. You could have also seen a track on the MMODEMM compilation and the first Eine Welt release. Of course there is also a mixtape released on Sameheads. If you can get your hands on one, it is highly recommended. It is also available on Soundcloud, for those who prefer digital. We are back in Sameheads in Berlin for this recording. Huge thanks to the Sameheads team for their hospitality, we could not have done without you! As Longitude take over the second hour of our show to talk about their influences, right after some fresh and forgotten music.
2015 has seen the release of a magical album. A symbiosis of guitar music, electronics and ambient sounds. Some are "pop" enough to be played on the commercial radios, but we all know what is the situation with those nowadays and why quality music usually is skipped on mainstream radio. Don't know about you, but 3 years later that first album still sounds fresh and definitely is very memorable. Die Wilde Jagd return this year with a brand new album, pushing it even further. It is sometimes hard to establish if it was meant for mass consumption or club use. I guess the best thing is that some tracks work for both worlds equally. The album is out April 6th. We went to Berlin, and with the help of Nathan and Gareth recorded Sebastian from Die Wilde Jagd in one of the brightest venues in the city - Sameheads. Probably already well known to you for their magical parties and their unforgettable mixtape series. Sebastian joins our series to discuss his influences - music that inspired him and the new album in particular.
Let's start 2018 with a huge celebration for us. Parabox radio show turns 2 years old! We decided to celebrate in multiple ways. Firstly please welcome our brand new redesign. For two years we have practised minimalism and monochrome visual style and our in house designer - Arturas Nauseda, decided that it was not enough anymore to describe the diversity of music and guests that we gather every month. Please welcome our new face. Second - while our studio is equipped for recording the show, we decided to pursue journeys into other countries to gain new experiences. The shows recorded out of our comfort zone will be marked as Out of the Studio, instead of the usual In the Studio. Expect to see more this year. Last, but by far not least is this months guest. While in Vilnius, Lithuania, Opium Club, dubbed by most artists who visited it in the past as being in their personal top 5 in Europe, allowed us to record this birthday episode. Two brothers from Moscow - Sasha and Sergey Lipsky, as usual, will be talking about their musical influences. Releasing their music on Disco Halal, they have already captured hearts of many dancers and continue to spend a lot of time in the studio producing our most favourite anthems. Simple Symmetry are taking over the second hour of our show, following some danceable and un-danceable music in the first hour.
A Special one for the end of the year. Vercetti Technicolor is a motion picture soundtrack producer and co-owner of Giallo Disco label. For one hour he is taking over our show to talk about music that influenced him and influenced the sound of the label as well. 70-80s horror movie fans are going to love this one.
London is a goldmine for talented selectors. Our Novembers guest is Kristopher Hall, who is one of the heads of Brokntoys label. A label well known for its ambient journeys as well as aggressive techno and surrealistic electro gems. If you are familiar with the output of the label (and if you are not, you have got some time to finish your homework) then there probably are some expectations for this months influence selection from Kristopher Hall and they will be broken. What you will hear might surprise you, but only in the best possible way. And in the end it all makes sense.
If you have not yet purchased "Dusk & Dreamland EP", you might be out of luck finding it in traditional record stores. This ep, which is more like a mini album, is not an attempt to copy the sonical aspects of the 80s, it's a carefully designed emotional throwback that does something to you. That mood transforming feeling every serious music lover on this planet is hunting for. System Olympia visits us to talk about the music and moments that have inspired this.
For many years In Flagranti have been treating us to some of the best music out there. Releasing on Phantasy, Rvng Intl, Kitsune, Kill The Dj and many more including their own Codek Records label. Their soundcloud page is interesting to me personally. This project has always pushed to explore the inside of musicians and artists by listening to what has inspired them. "Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.” - this is what is included on the bottom of the description. You know the end result at this point, let's get back to the roots and explore music that influenced this production. Sasa Crnobrnja (pronounced Sasha) is taking his valuable studio time in London to share his personal favourites. All of this in the hour two. First hour dedicated to some new music (and so far September has been fruitful) and a new track preview from our host.
A music journalist, producer and a DJ. One of the Sameheads longest serving residents, having recently released a Sameheads mixtape of indescribable perfection. Probably better known to all of you as producer on Power Station, Power Cuts, MMODEMM, Präsens Editionen and others. He has got a lot to say, and we are sure he will continue bringing his sound out. To start off, lets have a listen to what inspired and influenced him. Second hour, straight after some slow music, old forgotten synth pop, and more stuff that is meant for individuals, not the mass.
Having released music on Correspondant, Multi Culti, Clouded Vision, Throne of Blood and many others including some very memorable remixes - Jo Howard has already established himself as a go to guy for quality leftfield dance music. Most recent contribution to the ever growing world of electronic music is the label Sulk Magic that has so far managed to show us how many talented producers are there to discover. Jo takes over our show this month for an hour straight after this months selection of music from our friends, history and an ocean of talented guys out there.
Not all heroes wear capes. Harry James is the man behind the Snap Crackle & Pop (SC&P) brand well known to Londoners for their consistent delivery of alternative/leftfield dance music performers. The Waiting Room in particular has become a second home for many and line up has already included such legends as Ivan Smagghe, Vladimir Ivkovic, Inga Mauer, Tolouse Low Trax, Cosmo Vitelli, Manfredas, C.A.R., Alex Egan, and many more people, some rarely visiting UK in general. From all of us here at Parabox - huge THANK YOU for that! SC&P has recently launched a record label as well. First release featured an EP from The Junto Club, with remixes from Smagghe & Cross and Khidja and the second by Deeds with some amazing originals and remixed. Harry is also a great Dj and selector, and this is what we are going to try and extract from him in this episode. An hours selection of influences from the man himself following some music from our HQ.
Having found home on Emotional Especial records and recently on Bahnsteig 23 as well, Jamie Paton should be known to the musically educated crowd. His remixes and originals are often heard on dance floors all around the world, and it is not a coinsidence. One of the most recent productions out on Hoga Nord - Telefuture is definitely in out top 10 of this year. Slow, lo-fi, with a catchy groove. Will not be amazed if it sold out ages ago. With a lot of old sound influencing his productions, we thought it would be great to have him explain what they are. And this is exactly what is going to happen. Ah hour with Jamie Paton and music that inspired his tastes following an hour of new an old sounds from our HQ. Might even have an odd premiere.
With releases on Malka Tuti (including the new one coming soon, check it out if you have not yet done so) Bahnsteig 23, Hivern, Love On The Rocks, Especial and numerous amazing remixes, the two guys Florentin and Andrei have taken the world of the alternative dance music. Currently split between London and Berlin but so far not played a gig separately (from what we know). Both members of Khidja have been together for a long time and we were told from the beginning that only one member attending our show is not a go, true friends and colleagues! So we caught them both together in London and recorded the show in a way we have never before. The music is amazing as well as the stories from both of the members. As always talking about music that inspired them and which is still on the playlist.
If you haven't heard this name yet, you are seriously living under a rock. The man behind Les Disques De La Mort label. A&R for Kill The Dj. Half of It's a Fine Line. Half of Smagghe & Cross. Endless amazing remixes, and edits over the years. Host of Channeling radio show on NTS alongside Nathan Gregory Wilkins. A man with a thousand stories to tell. Yes, Mr Ivan Smagghe is joining us to talk about influential records. His hour follows after a selection of new and old music from ourselves.
One half of Roe Deers - Liudas is joining us for the second show of this season. Also locally known as St.Stereo - Liudas is known in Lithuania for hosting his radio show on the most recognised station in the country - Zip FM. The show itself was previously named Prelude (Preliudai) now has officialy changed name to Roe Deers Radio. The station also previously hosted a show by Manfredas for many years. That is not necessarily why you would recognise this duo. Having released their music on Nein and most recently on Omnidisc, they proved that they have something interesting to say. And people are reacting. One of our previous guests - Trevor Jackson included their track "Kukushka" in the top 35 tracks of 2016. An impressive achievement to say the least. Their most recent production is coming on Bird of Paradise new label - Sulk Magic very soon.
This first show of the year also marks the first birthday of Parabox. For this occasion we wanted to get someone very special, and we have! If you haven't checked any of the releases on Vivod we strongly advise you to. From disco to techno to synth-pop this label pushes out a lot of very different music however still manages to have its own recognisable sound. The tracks are so unique that Discogs vendors often sell them for much higher prices. This month we got the maestro behind this label to come in and talk about his influences. Ali Renault is also known for his productions. Most recently - Altro Mondo, released on Bordello A Parigi, delivers the ultimate symbiosis between skill, talent and taste and is highly recommended. Check out his selection of music straight after a one hour recap of last years shows. We are picking a favourite track from every guest, who came in last year to celebrate the new season and to celebrate all of the amazing people we had.
C.A.R. or Chloe Raunet surprised everyone with an amazing album titled "My Friend" back in 2014 released on Kill The Dj Records. It is the music we all want to hear on the radio. Mildly obscure, catchy and standing out. Then the remixes came. Manfredas did one for the track "Angelina" and boy what a remix that was. Roman Flugel did one for the track "Idle Eyes" and, well, if you haven't heard this one, then you should stop reading this now and go check it out. Apart from personal productions of excellent quality, you can also hear her voice on productions by Red Axes and Maceo Plex. The unique sonic quality and the style of singing will never come close to anything else. Chloe is bringing her influences in for the second hour of the show, and a few very cool stories as well, following the last selection of the year from our studios.
Our eleventh journey through the path of memories comes from yet another very special person. You might have heard his music, to a gig or even seen artwork produced by this multi-talented individual. Having remixed Erol Alkan, Boyz Noise, Justice, The Asphodells, Dj Rocca and many more. Most recently done a remix for Andrew Weatheralls' Consolamentum album. Let's also not forget the 2015 album "Everything is Turbulence" - a magical adventure that packs so many different things into it the most appropriate word to desctibe it would be Tim Cooks favourite phrase "It's Just Gorgeous". Justin Robertson, Ladies and Gentlemen aka Deadstock 33s.
Heretic aka Timothy Clerkin aka half of Eskimo Twins joins Parabox this month for one of those unusual selections that we all love. A Heretic influence selection full of surprises and tracks you think would not inspire the type of music produced by him, yet it does. Tracks he and the Eskimo Twins duo consisting of of Timothy and Nathan have been spotted and snached by such labels like Relish, Tusk Wax, Days of Being Wild, and more. His remix of Play The Game by Craig Bratley is definitely in my personal Top 10 for this year and I am pretty sure I am not the only one here. His Influence selection comes straight after some new music, some old releases, a premiere and another edit from our studios. The previous one is already supported by Ivan Smagghe, Manfredas, Bird of Paradise, and we have heard our todays guest liked them a lot as well.
The 9th tally on our canvas is taken by yet another legend. Well known in his home country - Lithuania, this person has been making people talk about his performances and events for more than 10 years already. Currently a resident in the best nightclub in Lithuania - Opium, well known around the world for it’s parties, hosting his latest club night - Smala. And last but not least, conquering hearts of DJs worldwide with his productions embellishing Ivan Smagghe’s label Les Disques De La Mort and Thomas Von Party’s label Multi Culti. Having already remixed Moscoman, C.A.R., Headman and Red Axes the only bad thing is that he does not spend enough time in the studio to create more. It is of course Manfredas.
In 2013 he started his own residence called Shadowplay at one of the most important clubs in France at the moment - the iBoat in Bordeaux. He invited artists from within his own universe such as Tom Furse, Richard Fearless, Marc Houle, DJ Hell, Ewan Pearson and more. His last EP ‘Klub Psycho’ released on Relish early 2016 and including remix from The Hacker and Joe Spurgeon from The Horrors was supported by Laurent Garner, Daniel Avery, Justin Robertson, Sean Johnston and many more. Taking up one more space on the Parabox canvas is London based Mondowski with his selection of influences from the past following an hour of selection from our HQ.
Sebastian Voigt made his name in the London music world as co-founder and resident of the infamous Lo*kee parties which were once described by Mixmag as “the best (and most private) Sunday afternoon rendezvous to hit East London in a long time”. Many years of collecting records combined with his love for hedonistic raves helped shape his warm and eclectic sound, which in absence of a better classification could be described as a blend of psychedelic House and stripped back Techno, topped up with a healthy dose of Disco and Acid. In 2012, Sebastian decided to move back to Berlin, where he was instantly named resident of Renate. Apart from being a DJ, label owner and promoter, Sebastian is also a engineer and producer. His releases on labels such as Visionquest and most recently Renate Schallplatten have been greatly supported by the industry and crowd alike.
Luke has been collecting records since about 1985 and by now has a great collection of disco and house music. Having a fantastic collection is great, but sharing that music is a totally unique feeling and this is why he has been sharing his collection on the dancefloor ever since. 2003 has been an important year for him and three other music lovers, who started Horse Meat Disco. Focusing on primarily 70's and 80's music they have managed to touch every dancefloor they were on and secured residencies in Berlin at Prince Charles and New York at Cielo and Output. They host a radio show of their own on Rinse FM at the best time to listen to such music - 1-3pm on a Sunday afternoon. One of the many things to be proud about is their Horse Meat Disco compilations, which there are four already. Luke Howard is going to share his passion for music that has been a continuous influence for many years.
The man behind the very well known "Metal Dance", "Science Fiction Dancehall Classics" compilations, and the concept release "Format" that celebrated almost every imaginable music carrying media. As well as of course "300 words". These last two releases were not just an attempt to publish music but to celebrate it and bring the art back into todays sea of music. It is not just a coincidence, as Trevor is a very well known art director and designer whose critically acclaimed installations continue to push the boundaries of traditional product presentation. In the world of music he is probably best known for his visual campaign for Soulwax, including the stunning cover design. It is however just one of his many projects that we can probably go on and on about. Ladies and gentlemen - Trevor Jackson. As usual, talking about his most influential tracks over the past years. A great reminder for some, an educational lesson for others. Trevor, as usual, will take the second hour.
