We revive our Global Selection series with a standout contribution from one of France's most authoritative selectors of his generation, Ivan Smagghe. Ahead of his return to Dublin for Big Dish Go this weekend at Centre Point, Smagghe delivers a masterful hour of storytelling through sound. From shimmering downtempo rarities to deep, driving house cuts and smoky, electro-kissed grooves, his mix unfolds like the hazy soundtrack to a foggy morning in the hills of an undisclosed rave, transporting you there, or wherever your wandering mind takes you. Few DJs can transform obscurity into dancefloor gold like Ivan Smagghe. With a musical ethos reminiscent of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Smagghe acts as a raw conduit, channelling his notoriously esoteric record collection into the pulsing bodies beneath the strobe. His latest mix is yet another example of his singular talent—a deep dive into the avant-garde fringes of electronic music, held together by an intuitive understanding of groove and space. Smagghe has long been at the intersection of Parisian hype and unwavering musical integrity. From his pioneering work with Black Strobe to his boundary-pushing productions as one half of It's A Fine Line, he has received praise from some of the most respected names in electronic music, including James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo, and, of course, Weatherall himself. What is their shared mission? To demonstrate that electronic music is more than just a hedonistic soundtrack; it is a constantly evolving art form. “I have very fond, if a bit blurred, memories of the Big Dish Go parties in the basement of Kennedy's… Loud and wild they were but we live in the now and we must let that spirit live on. It's just about freedom, in that mix (who cares what style it is) and in that ephemeral companionship with David Holmes. Freedom & Love” Ivan Smagghe --------------- SC: @colonelgatito IG: www.instagram.com/ivan_smggh_jmm/ Four Four Magazine --------------------------- FB: www.facebook.com/FOURFOURDANCE/ IG: www.instagram.com/fourfourmagazine/ Web: www.fourfourmag.com/

Gem Fletcher speaks to photographer Gareth McConnell in the second episode of a three-part series in partnership with Seen Fifteen Gallery. The Troubles Generation - an ongoing curatorial project by Vivienne Gamble invites artists who grew up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles to shed new light on the impact of being brought up in an era of intense sectarian violence. Gareth McConnell is a London-based photographer with diverse interests and many styles of approach. His work as a fine artist has been given recognition in monographs, cover features, and articles including from Steidl/Photoworks, Frieze, and Aperture. His fine art prints are widely collected. In the past, he has worked as a documentary photographer for the New York Times, and served high-end fashion – Vogue Homme, Pop, and AnOther, and clients like Dior, Gucci and Chloe. He has worked in the music industry with artists including Sia, Disclosure and Ivan Smagghe. McConnell has actively instigated non-commercial projects with other artists and writers, publishing them under his imprint Sorika, and has co-curated a show at London's ICA, and talk events at the ICA and Tate Modern. McConnell has shown at many galleries and fairs, including Carl Freedman Gallery, Frieze Art Fair, Kasmin Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Photographers' Gallery. He is represented in significant private and public collections. He increasingly values a direct relationship with audiences through his websites and social media platforms. Looking ahead to a significant future moment in UK and Irish history with the 25th anniversary of The Good Friday Agreement in 2023, The Troubles Generation project seeks to examine the legacy of The Troubles from the viewpoint of artists born into its divided society and with lived experience of growing up with conflict as the backdrop to their lives. Taking a phased approach to developing photographic projects and new writing, the ultimate ambition is to create a large-scale touring exhibition in 2023. The project's first phase at Seen Fifteen has been generously supported by the Genesis Kickstart Fund, enabling three solo exhibitions with Martin Seeds, Gareth McConnell and Audrey Blue. Seen Fifteen is an independent emerging gallery and project space in Peckham, South East London. Seen Fifteen's artistic programme champions contemporary photography with a focus on emerging, diverse and experimental artists who expand the boundaries of the medium. Founded in 2015 by curator Vivienne Gamble, the gallery has hosted a number of widely acclaimed first UK solo shows for breakthrough photographic artists such as Laura El-Tantawy, Jan McCullough, Maya Rochat and Martin Seeds. *****GOLDEN BUG****** Essential record producer, label owner, DJ, groove sculptor, metal sculptor: Golden Bug (also known as Antoine Harispuru) is nothing short of a true, incredibly multi-talented artist. Details about his early years are scant but really interesting: born in Paris in his mother's toy shop (“La Maison du Robot”) he apparently got his early education by...well, a robot named V.I.C.T.O.R.: a sentient japanese prototype of AI-based bot who took care of him from the cradle to the sampler. What we also know is that as Antoine turned 14, V.I.C.T.O.R. got him a Roland TR808, an EMU sampler and some disco records. Jumpcut to 2007 – little Antoine is now Golden Bug and his first solo EP, Barbie's Back, is out on german label Gomma. It's a huge success for the ghetto-disco wizkid as everyone starts falling in love for his sound: his first album, Hot Robot, is released in 2008 and Erol Alkan, Jori Hulkonnen, PrinsThomas, Digitalism, Shitrobot play his tracks all around the world. A sound redefining the club vibes. A ghetto-inspired forward-thinking mix of booming basses, crispy synths and never-heard-before cut up voices, Hot Robot is an unforgivable groovathon. A groovathon earning him calls from pretty much everyone: he remixes Who Made Who, Bot'Ox, In Flagranti,Two Door Cinema Club, Clap Rules. Everybody wants a Golden Bug remix. Next in the pipeline, 3 EPs follow: his sound is even punchier now, and at the same time more 'out there' and visionary. His tracks are played by people like Andrew Weatherall, Rodion,Tiga, Chloé, Boris Dlugosh,Manfredas,Ivan Smagghe,Justin Robertson,Pedro Winter... He moves to Barcelona and after a world-wide live tour he decides parting ways with Gomma to create his own label, La Belle Records, founded with friends Herr Styler and La Tebwa entertainment, Paris. Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! Decided on a mock interview format to share our thoughts on some House DJ related topics we've seen online lately, PART1...We hope that you enjoy this mix also. Cheers, dattraxWHAT IS WITH ALL THIS HOOPLA ONLINE ABOUT DJS WHO USE SYNC BUTTONS TO MATCH BEATS?Sync or no-sync, at the end of the day it's about rocking crowds, making great memories and experiences, so it doesn't matter. If you have fans, then someone likes what you do, then that's what we're all after isn't it?Having said this, there are a few things we'd like to share:Some big DJs like DeadMau5, David Guetta and Steve Angelo, etc. who use premixed mixes for live shows are like modern day rock stars with legions of fans paying lots of money to listen to their pre-programmed sets, so it seems that this is what their fans want, their form of 'live' entertainment. Doesn't seem that their fans care if it's really live or not.DNothing wrong with that. Loud music blasting in your ears while you dance your stress & worries away is what it's always been about.Don't really have a beef with pre-programed sets or synced mixing, but our beef is with pretending to DJ and then denying that they are syncing, etc (recent example is the online scuffle between DJ Sneak and Steve Angelo about 'fake djing'- remember the Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal in '80s? Same deal).Angelo apparently denies this, even after images and youtube vids of him at live events circulate all over Facebook that prove otherwise. Angelo has a massive following that love his tunes, so what's the big deal Stevie? Just say you do and so what if you do, but don't say that you play live when you clearly don't.Syncing is important for DJs like Richie Hawtin. Hawtin is a pioneer, a scientist and master show man- working a laser light show, always mixing four tracks at the same time, doing 1/2 a dozen effects at any one time. In his case, beat matching has to take a backseat so he can create and inspire. That's different. If you just mix two records together (like we do), then why do that? The fun for us has always been in the mixing! The ups and downs of trying different track combos, different house genre combos, playing tracks at different speeds or EQ settings that we enjoy rather than what they were created at, using line levels and cross faders to change the tension between during mixes, mixing out properly to not change the tempo in an undesired way, seeing how what we do fail or succeed in getting a shared reaction of joy from a fellow House Fiend. We grew up with great Toronto DJs, like Aki. who was mixing beautiful house journeys in smoky, dark & packed warehouse parties before dj mixers had single channel EQs or effects buttons (the internet, mp3's, Facebook or cell phones). Listen for yourself- just house music and mixing. This mix was on cassette tape (google it!) made in 1996 by Aki with two twelves and a old school mixer:http://torontohousedjs.podomatic.com/entry/2011-03-03T10_38_24-08_00We forked out good money each week to go crazy to amazing talents like Jason Palma, PTS (Peter, Tyrone & Shams), Dave Campbell, Kevin Williams and Dino & Terry- these guys made you danced till the sun rose.We saw out of town talents like Roger Sanchez, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Cevin Fisher, DJ Sneak and Little Louie Vega blow our minds with 2 or 3 vinyl turntables- all these guys made us grow more in love with house music each time we partied to their brand of house! The art and wonder of it all. Learning what we liked or didn't like about the mixing or music programming. Always learning and having fun along the way.We also take issue with some DJs saying that beat matching is so easy and take no time to learn to justify their syncing. We just have one question:"If it's so easy, then why are you using the sync??!!"If you want to sync, then do it, it's your art form and the way you want to express yourself. Just don't pretend that you do it because it's not worth your creative focus & energies, or that you don't when you in fact do. Life is simple but some people choose to make it difficult.---------------Reach out to us and comment. Just Google 'dattrax' and you'll find all places online that we've been a part of. Mark Bailey aka MAN2.0 has been splicing together sounds longer than he can remember, as a teen he graced the microphones of some terrible covers bands as well as DJing some of the most hedonistic house parties that Hayes Town had to offer, while by day working at the local record store. After throwing away his guitars and buying an appregiator his music gained a bit of attention from the Ransom Note and was taken under the wing of Tronik Youth. From the age of 18 he regularly attended Fabric and the now defunct End nightclub and Turnmills immersing himself in London’s club scene. Since the inception of his solo career, Italian born Luca Cazal has achieved much in a short space of time. With an impressive discography across a variety of aliases, including the hugely successful Infinity Ink, Hot Natured and Luca C.& Brigante groups, he’s released via household names: Classic Music Company, Crosstown Rebels, Southern Fried to name a few. In the studio, Cazal draws from a deep well of inspirations that spans Electro, Dub and the classic house and Techno heritage of his homeland. Pair this with an unwavering obsession for hardware and flair for live performance to get a sense of the distinct personality captured in Cazal’s productions. An avid digger and record collector, whilst humble, driven and devoted to the craft, Cazal is completely at home during both peak time and long-form sets. As an international DJ, he makes regular stops at club culture’s most lionised spaces including Fabric, Club Der Visionnaire, Panorama Bar and of course Ibiza’s DC10 of which he’s been a longstanding resident for, now over seven years and counting. Constantly evolving, Cazal took first forays into label owning in 2014, first establishing Double Drop with long-term peer Brigante, followed by its See Double offshoot. Since launching both labels have offered material from bastions of the scene: Ivan Smagghe, The Mole, Boris Werner and more, across releases still championed amongst house and techno luminaries. EVERYTHING I’VE HEARD Present BILLY BOGUS as 4th guest mix. - Billy (real name Niccolò Bruni), Pizzico Records' founder, started as a DJ in the mid 90s when he was only 18: he was a squatter and he used to arrange unusual performances with endless rotation of FSOL & Klaus Schulze music, filming everybody with a VHS camera and broadcasting everything in the community, creating peculiar vibes and feelings all around. Today his approach to DJing has the same feeling, also with contemporary dance music. Rare vinyls, mp3s, scratchy CDs, the format doesn’t matter, the central themes are what is important to him: italo disco, slow motion funk, trippy techno, every kind of dance music is like a magic mean to a shiny groove and he aims to spread this energy among the people via his own label, Pizzico. Pizzico was founded in 2007, among the others they have discovered and produced artists such as Jonathan Kusuma (Space System), Ichisan, Discodromo, Kid Who, Sare Havlicek, MA Spaventi and many more. After remixing the legendary band The Units and Dennis Young from Liquid Liquid, Billy’s career as a producer began to grow steadily: singles, remixes, three official albums and a jazzy under the moniker of Strata-Gemma. The word about his work was on everyone's lips, including household names like Laurent Garnier and Dimitri From Paris. His tracks have been regularly played by disco legends like Dj Harvey, Stevie Kotey, Gilles Peterson, Ivan Smagghe and Bill Brewster. - More about Billy Bogus : Discogs : http://www.discogs.com/artist/1456389-Billy-Bogus Soundcloud : https://soundcloud.com/billy-bogus Pizzico Records : https://pizzicorecords.bandcamp.com/ - Tracklist : 01. From all of us here at Parabox - huge THANK YOU for that! SC&P has recently launched a record label as well. First release featured an EP from The Junto Club, with remixes from Smagghe & Cross and Khidja and the second by Deeds with some amazing originals and remixed. Harry is also a great Dj and selector, and this is what we are going to try and extract from him in this episode. Roll up, roll up, this one is worth some attention. Martyn Lester is a man of mystery, a throwback character with a penchant for retro synths and the energy of youth. Drawing upon inspiration from the days of Italo and the early days of Ibiza he has hand crafted a sound which is far beyond his own assumption. Appearances on Ruf Kutz, Blip Discs and in the coming weeks Ransom Note Records play testament to his taste and style in the form of a remix of Ivan Smagghe and Rupert Cross aka Smagghe and Cross's Talking To Katz EP. I mean, why else would we sign him? As a disc jockey Glowing Palms is diverse and entertaining, as much about the Saturday night soundtrack as the vintage mixtape. With a roster featuring artists like Clarian, Thomash, Crowdpleaser, and label co-shaman Thomas Von Party, the imprint strains and throbs against the restrictive meta-thongs of contemporary electronic lifestyle living to offer a pan-globo-sexual soulstyle for our times. Set for release this fall, Dreems' self-titled debut album is a testament to his knowledge of distant lands and musics, taking you on a psychedelic vibeabout beyond all borders, whirling in a primordial soup of barely understood sonic innovation. His hypnotic reveries have already earned support from taste-making dance wizards like Trevor Jackson, Ivan Smagghe, Roman Fluegel & Andrew Weatherall. "I am on a mission, a quest to free you from the divisive shackles of flags and tongues," says Dreems. Towards the end of the summer a new label appeared on our radar; it goes by the name of Sprechen and has been quick to pick up support from Ivan Smagghe, Pete Herbert and Jacques Renault. It's not hard to see why; their first EP boasted strong cuts from Damon Jee with killer remixes from Hardway Bros and Ill Est Villain. Their second EP drops in the new year from our good friend Chris Massey which promises some hefty collaborations. Keep 'em peeled. Their mix for us showcases sounds that will they tell us will shape the label. Enticing... @sprechenmusic facebook.com/SprechenMusic

Scotland has long been a hot bed for underground electronic music; they really know their stuff up there and plying their trade longer than most are respected DJs and promoters Steve Cass & Justin Wilson with their No Strings Attached parties. Now in their 20th year the list of guests appearing alongside them is endless and the longevity of NSA is down to them constantly pushing their sound and bringing back the artists they personally like to hear. Based in Galashiels, south of Edinburgh the duo use a small basement in their local football club with a capacity of only 120. Guests have included Andrew Weatherall, Slam, Ivan Smagghe and Justin Robertson and they have also hosted numerous parties in the Scottish capital including A Love From Outer Space. NSA never stick to one genre expect; anything from weird disco to techno and the odd classic thrown in with this fine mix for us. www.soundcloud.com/nsaofficial

Black Strobe did a good good thing. The Paris underground scene has given rise to some of the biggest names in dance music across the board; Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier, Dimitri From Paris, Ivan Smagghe, Jeremy Underground Paris and DJ Mehdi to name a few. Right at the top of this very talented pile lies Franck Roger, a man dedicated to old school house whilst still pushing things forward.A staunch supporter of vinyl, his sets have won him support around the world, and earned him recognition from those artists that originally inspired him to become a musician. His love of the old school does not only lay in the music and the format in which he plays on, but also his use of analog equipment during his special live sets.A multi-talented individual certainly, not only a producer / DJ, but also label boss, with his imprint Real Tone Records putting out releases from the likes of Maya Jane Coles, The Martinez Brothers, Shonky, Burnski and M A N I K. His new label, Home Invasion, is set to be a vinyl only label, with a real emphasis on the releases being collectors items. Again drawing inspiration from the past, the label is set to take on his major musical influences whilst still having a modern twist. We caught up with ever cool Parisian ahead of his gig at Egg Presents on Friday 9th May alongside the Decay Records camp with Sascha Dive, Gavin Herlihy and more. Where, how and on what was the mix recorded? The mix has been recorded at home where all my records and studio is. This is where I feel the most comfortable and able to create a mix that I am happy with. I used two mk2 turntables, 2 cdj's and a wonderfull DJR 400 that I have had for 8 years now and that i love to play with. It's recorded live without any playlist in mind which is how I feel the best, no pressure, just a the feeling of the moment and that's also my vision of djing at home or in a club, keeping it live and real. The Parisian underground scene has given rise to some fantastic artists and some very influential movements in Electronic Music. Laurent Garnier with his distinctive 'French Techno' sound, then Daft Punk, Alan Braxe and Cassius were instrumental in what was labelled 'French House' by the media. Meanwhile Mr. Oizo & Ivan Smagghe,  amongst others, played their part in the evolution of 'Electro House' and acts such as Jef K, D'Julz & Jeremy Underground Paris have been instigating a classicist House revival for many years now.  You've been there from the start witnessing, and being a part of it all since day one. What effect has this musically rich city had on you as a person, performer and musician? All the names you mention here take a lot of influence from a special musical era which existed in the US and it is the same for me too. French producers gave their 'special treatment' with a classy touch of course. I think we can talk also about St Germain and Shazz here. Paris is a city with tons of talented dj's and producers and it also influences all of us in a crazy race of production, especially today with all the Parisian labels that do only vinyl for most of them, we all have respect for each other and provide one another with energy and inspiration. If i lived out of Paris i would have followed a different path with my music for sure. How would you describe your sound as a DJ and also as producer? My sounds as a dj and producer is an instant sound, instant in the moment, just a feeling as a dj when you have a good crowd you wanna give them all you have, so the moments can be magic, in the studio the approach is different, you're all alone with you're machines, so you need to project yourself in another dimension, imagine how the record will be received once played in a club. My sounds are mostly old skool in the studio and even the way i play, i keep it raw, no time to sleep behind the decks, that's how I feel it. You’re known for your love of 'old school' house music, how did you first discover it? I first heard what we now call 'old school' house on the radio in the 90's when i was around 15, recording shows on tape, running to record stores with my walkman to find out what was playing etc. I was always on a quest for the tracks I'd hear and I found this really exciting. As I didnt have much money at that age, Id only buy EPs I really loved making my collection from this era all the more precious for me. So it was this sound that I grew up with, at the time sounding so new and exciting, now it sounds old for the younger generation but for me this is the real essence of house music, this is where i come from. Now old school is hyped which is a good thing, all the repres's from the records that took us years to collect are now here again, its  a cycle. I dont follow the hype , I play house music, can be old or new, if it feels right and gives me the right emotions Ill play it. You’re a strictly vinyl man. What is it you love about this format and do you think it has a future in dance music? I buy vinyl every week but it doesnt mean that i only play records, it depend on the travel conditions etc. I rip a lot of my records so I  an play them on CD if I want to take a bigger selection of music with me to a gig. I do believe that vinyl will never disappear, thats my thought, we will all go back to vintage things, in arts and in music and we love evolutions and technical progression but there will always be a love for something that people can hold in their hands, record shops and label owners alike will always survive I feel. You just launched your new imprint Home Invasion. Can you tell us about your vision for the record label and what musical direction you plan on taking with it? Home Invasion is for now and always will be a vinyl only label, why? Because I want people to take time to listen to the music and for it not to get lost in the millions of releases on Beatport or in their Itunes.. I dont have anything against beatport but i want to see that people are loving the music by buying a real physical copy. I mean, I know it can cost 10 euro but to me this is an investment in something that will stay in your collection for life. The Home Invasion records will also be stamped one by one as I want buyers to know that i time and effort in to them one by one. It's an artisanal thing and in the studio it is the same, old skool with many machines, outboard, machine drums, synths, effects etc.. the list is long and very interesting. Musically I will follow my directions influenced by all those years behind me and will try to keep it futuristic and modern at the same time, with my touch, spacey and trippy for some times too, I don't wanna lock myself in a certain style, I just want to follow my inspirations and this is what is so exiting to keep being an artist and feel free and alive everyday. What are you working on at the moment? Anything you’d like to shout about? Im working on the next Home Invasions but I am in no rush. I want to keep the label with only 4 releases a year not more, keeping time to promote it well spending as much time as necessary to create something I'm truly happy with. The focus is on Home Invasion at the moment but I always enjoy working on remixes when i have time and if I like and feel inspired by the project and feel inspired like the one that will come soon on Decay Records from Juliche Hernandez. The next release, Home Invasion 3, will be out mid-April and is already receiving very good feedback from many dj's so i've got a good feeling on it :-)And finally, what artists are you loving right now? I don't have special names to mention as there are a lot, i will go for some of the new blood in Detroit, and in New York.. There is a lot of great productions coming from there at the moment and it is really good to see that. Paris is rocking with hold youth and rue de plaisance records, syncrophone records too, so many to mention and so many names that are making this world go round :-)

Days Of Being Wild is a label we've been keeping a keen eye on over the last 12 months or so. With their tagline of 'slightly deranged club music' it's hard not to be interested, and they have soon caught the ear of Ivan Smagghe, Andrew Weatherall, Chloe and Scott Fraser amongst others. We approached them to record a mix for us and they presented us with this fine live session recorded by label head Catalepsia (aka Jerome Bazzanella) at their monthly DOBW session at Willerhof in France. We're informed there are lots of forthcoming tracks from the label included. Strap in, lets get wild... http://soundcloud.com/days_of_being_wild

More house music goodness from the freakin podcast series. This edition comes straight out of Romania from the excellent Gemini Brothers. Here's a little interview with the guys: What is the best thing about Romania? What is the scene like there? TGB: We believe that Romania still has a lot to learn; from how to manage itself as a country - politically speaking, to music/ fashion/ art culture! We have an incredible country: lovely and generous people which is the great ingredient to comfortably living here, fantastic fairy tales places like Black Sea seaside or Carpathians mountains, folk art, lovely and fresh food (the vegetables are still organic and the sheep or goat cheese - telemea is incredible)! Unfortunately, the music scene is quite small, if we refer to the entire Romania! But there is our capital Bucharest, which is in top with clubs and the clubbing scene, but Cluj or Timisoara are coming back with great clubs and the artists invited to play and perform! The bars and clubs are quite pretentious and commercial seems to gain a lot of attention, probably like everywhere, where people are going out only to show their clothes and latest cars or iphones! Still the underground clubs comes with strong and heavy competition with big names from the scene and the crowed is warm and starts to be very knowledgeable in this house music culture! Do you still live in Romania? Can your country be “heard” in your music? TGB: Yes, we are based near Bucharest, just moved out from the big city madness at the country side, which is better for inspiration and healthy. No cars, no sirens, no sidewalks, just cats and dogs around! We don't really use too many things from the Romanian folk traditional music; our inspiration is not quite Romanian. The Romanian folk music is multicultural, still popular and divided into regions, and the main and common instruments are violins, taragots (which was replaced by the saxophone lately), pipes, and accordions. There are as well big influences from the traditional music from tartars, Turkish and Bulgarian style and characterized by Balkans and Turkish rhythms. Maybe a little bit our drum parts have some small influence, but really small. What would you say were the biggest influences on your music? TGB: We listen a lot of music; from classical music (we have a rule by Monday to be the non-electronic music day), '70s psychedelic rock to ambient or hard techno. We're quite influenced these days by the acid techno from the 90s, some old Josh Wink or Baby Ford, but as well loving the 80s disco era. Nevertheless, some time ago we've produced some nu-funk releases and remixes, so James Brown, Johnny Hammond or Gil Scott Heron soul tracks were never missed in our iPod track-list. Lately we discovered more and more obscure artists and bands who were, in their side, been influenced by the Nordic disco from Todd Terje or Prins Thomas, as well Sir Andrew Weatherall or Ivan Smagghe have big places in our minds and souls for inspiration. What are your favourite tracks of the moment? TGB: (Ionut) - Gameboyz - Foco / (Razvan) - Pink Floyd - Echoes You have only been releasing your own productions relatively recently, how long were you djing before this? TGB: Well, we've started some time ago, in 2001, in one of the hottest places from Bucharest in those days, probably the best underground place ever - Web Club, which was owned by a Greek guy and friend of us. Here most of the old-skool DJs formed and performed. You could find here parties from hip-hop to techno or d’n’b. Lovely place and full of positive, inspirational, creative home! We used to play here only on vinyl, even if we didn't know at that time to sync too much, but was such a great fun and beautiful people! The production side came in time, some part came from frustrations that without productions nobody knows you, some came from ambition to play and produce for outside Romania and the possibility to be noticed exactly by the guys/artists you play in your sets. And is tested, we've started to be charted by the guys we love, etc. If we are looking back we're kind of sad that we didn't start to produce earlier, probably we’d be in a different place now, but is never too late to start doing your dream! What have been your favourite gigs and where would be your dream gig in the future? TGB: We had incredible gigs and experiences in London's Ministry of Sound and Electric Brixton or played in really great places like Budva - Montenegro and Dubrovnik - Croatia. We had as well really nice gigs in Romania. Cluj-Napoca has a perfect crowd, you can jump from disco to acid to house or electro and the people is jumping around! Is everything about the crowd, the warm people and how the dance-floor reacts, and there are a lot of places where the crowd is warm and sensational, and you have to believe me, all the big DJs who came in Romania said "we have to get back soon"! Our dream is to play in Ibiza and we did a small pact between us, never even visit the island until we go there to play! Of course another dream is to travel around the globe with music and gigs, love to comeback in US or playing in Australia! As well Asia has a really great scene! Shanghai is quite a target! What made you want to make the move from playing records to making them? Has this become more important than djing? TGB: As I've mentioned before, was all about some small frustration and ambition, but is more than that! You can play the best music, but without doing it is hard to achieve a place in this overfull DJs market. We loved some artists, we used to play them hard and never could stay or even get in contact with them. Of course this was behind our love for music! This is by default I think for every musician or producer. So, in these circumstances, we started first to make some remixes for some soul funk tracks! Believe us, we never been conscience about the artists we edit or remix, we loved the tracks as it was. They liked it and then we've started to do our own tracks and the feedback was unbelievable, those big guys who were our targets now start charting, playing, and supporting us! Now we are totally into productions, keen on finding our own sound, buying analogue equipment, but never let DJing on the second place! We love to play; we love clubs, turntables, art of mixing! We play quite often lately and what is great for us is that we used to travel outside Romania! How would you describe your productions? We think that our own sound is still in the development period, still many things to try, learn, experienced. Of course we have our funky background, and if you listen most of our tracks have guitars, funky bassline, and never thought to our tracks to have minimal lines. But lately we are very attracted by acid, deeper bass, wired atmosphere and crazy psychedelic disco. Probably in this line most of our future productions will sound! But never say never to test and do many other things. We have a project with some deep vocal house influences, so, never say never! Your Podcast for us is full of rolling electronics and dark acidic grooves. Is this typical of the sort of set you like to play out in a club? TGB: Well, depends a lot about the gig, club, atmosphere, crowd, warm-up, how many hours we play... We really made a podcast with things we like these days and we're influenced by, but our sets could be groovier or house, discoes or even techno. Is everything about reading the crowd! Of course, this is a podcast, but in club we never make a track-list before, we learned that until 2001 and still learning. What can we look forward to over the next year from Gemini Bros? Any big gigs or productions on the horizon? TGB: Good question, if 2013 was and still is a busy year from all the perspectives, production vs. gigs, 2014 will be for sure the cherry on the top. For this year is still planned to launch another two releases, one on vinyl and the other one digital for London's based label ISM Records and Home Breakin Records from Canada. As well we were involved in some remixes on vinyl and digital for some good names like Ursula 1000's new disco project Quentin Quatro, YamWho feat. Robert Owens and the list continue but we'd like to keep all the info until things are sorted and ready to get out! Gigs? Probably London and Croatia again, UK and Italy for the first time and the list goes on. The facebook page will be updated with all our gigs periodically, so give us a follow or a like! E discoteca vs bar? Procuro satisfazer as minhas vontades momentâneas. Twofold, D-Man, Zacarocha, Pedro Martins, 18thdivision, IVVO, Ramboiage, Ludovic, Chainless, Thomm, Papercutz, Manycure, Photonz. - Vais tocar no primeiro Boiler Room português, qual a tua expectativa? INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > www.inverted-audio.com/wesley-matsell Having released two records over the past four years, Wesley Matsell isn't exactly in a rush to satisfy our musical appetites. After a tip off from Nathan Fake back in our interview in February, who praised Wesley's productions, we started to take note of the Welshman's output. Early 2012 saw the release of Wesley's highly acclaimed ‘Zones Within Zones‘ EP on Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist's Studio Barnhus label, a combination of jacking house grooves and heavily swung synth arpeggios. Wesley also released an excellent remix of Taragama Pyjarama's ‘Balibat‘ and a cosmic remix of Phil Kieron's ‘Le Carrousel‘. From what we've been told Wesley has big things lined up for 2013, including a potential release of a new record on Border Community. For those of us who are based in London, The Hydra have invited Border Community to see us off into the New Year and Wesley Matsell will play alongside James Holden, Nathan Fake (live), Luke Abbott (live) and special guest Ivan Smagghe. Tickets are almost gone, so you better be quick.

Decided on a mock interview format to share our thoughts on some House DJ related topics we've seen online lately, PART1... We hope that you enjoy this mix also. Cheers, dattrax WHAT IS WITH ALL THIS HOOPLA ONLINE ABOUT DJS WHO USE SYNC BUTTONS TO MATCH BEATS? Sync or no-sync, at the end of the day it's about rocking crowds, making great memories and experiences, so it doesn't matter. If you have fans, then someone likes what you do, then that's what we're all after isn't it? Having said this, there are a few things we'd like to share: Some big DJs like DeadMau5, David Guetta and Steve Angelo, etc. who use premixed mixes for live shows are like modern day rock stars with legions of fans paying lots of money to listen to their pre-programmed sets, so it seems that this is what their fans want, their form of 'live' entertainment. Doesn't seem that their fans care if it's really live or not. Nothing wrong with that. Loud music blasting in your ears while you dance your stress & worries away is what it's always been about. Don't really have a beef with pre-programed sets or synced mixing, but our beef is with pretending to DJ and then denying that they are syncing, etc (recent example is the online scuffle between DJ Sneak and Steve Angelo about 'fake djing'- remember the Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal in '80s? Same deal). Angelo apparently denies this, even after images and youtube vids of him at live events circulate all over Facebook that prove otherwise. Angelo has a massive following that love his tunes, so what's the big deal Stevie? Just say you do and so what if you do, but don't say that you play live when you clearly don't. Syncing is important for DJs like Richie Hawtin. This mix was on cassette tape (google it!) made in 1996 by Aki with two twelves and a old school mixer: http://torontohousedjs.podomatic.com/entry/2011-03-03T10_38_24-08_00 We forked out good money each week to go crazy to amazing talents like Jason Palma, PTS (Peter, Tyrone & Shams), Dave Campbell, Kevin Williams and Dino & Terry- these guys made you danced till the sun rose. We saw out of town talents like Roger Sanchez, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Cevin Fisher, DJ Sneak and Little Louie Vega blow our minds with 2 or 3 vinyl turntables- all these guys made us grow more in love with house music each time we partied to their brand of house! The art and wonder of it all. Learning what we liked or didn't like about the mixing or music programming. Always learning and having fun along the way. We also take issue with some DJs saying that beat matching is so easy and take no time to learn to justify their syncing. We just have one question: "If it's so easy, then why are you using the sync??!!" If you want to sync, then do it, it's your art form and the way you want to express yourself. Just don't pretend that you do it because it's not worth your creative focus & energies, or that you don't when you in fact do. Life is simple but some people choose to make it difficult. With a release on the unparalleled Trax Records coming in the new year amongst other things we though this would be the perfect time to catch up…so take it away BUBBA. The late 70’s and early 80’s is a period that seems to hold a real fascination for me in movies and music. It was a period of new technology and computers influencing music and movies like Blade Runner, Alien, Star Wars, Escape from New York, Westworld stimulating my imagination of future visions. This combined with the electronic music of Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Human League soundtracks of John Carpenter moulded my love for an electronic sound which always inspires me. And I’m still discovering music from that era of disco early house, italo, electronica and pop from artists such as Tangerine Dream, Klause Schulze, Telex, Egyptian Lover, The The and more. I put together this 2 hr mix of new discoveries, old reedits, new trax, movie samples and some of my own, I guess it’s the sort of music I imagine that was getting played at the Technoir night club in the Terminator just before Arnie turned up and ruined the party! Today Milly De Mori, aka DJ millydemori, is considered one of the upcoming female international DJs in electronic music. Between club gigs, radio, production work and now her personal label SoundSelective Records, her career has been steadily growing to a rounder artist profile. HIGHGRADE REC., FLASH, MALATOID, PRSSLAB REC., LANDED, KRITICAL NOISE REC. or STRIKE are some of the labels she's released with, besides her own SOUNDSELECTIVE RECORDINGS. Fascinated more with tecky sounds and funky basslines than with vocals, Milly De Mori finds her roots in house music in the late 80's/beginning 90's, when hanging out in Ibiza she was first exposed to the 4/4's that changed her life. Italian born living in Milan, Milly decided to move to NY in '93 where she spent 12 years, until 2005. During her US stay Milly bloomed as a DJ artist, and the exposure to a effervescent 90’s New York dance scene with clubs like Sound Factory and Twilo (Danny Tenaglia) or Body & Soul (with Francois K, Clausell and Krivit) or the teck house Matter-Form parties (with Adult Napper, Mr C) contributed to shape her sound to a true mix of electronic and organic elements, thus creating a very personal style that quickly found a great response in the hottest markets like NYC, Atlanta and Miami. In 2009 Milly started her own record label SoundSelective Records with base in New York and distributed by Straight Distribution (Germany).Besides herself, she's also featuring artitst like Luca Doobie, Monopolar, Alex Costa, PToile and Landed, and exploring the boundaries between Teck House, House and Tecno. Supported by Coccoluto, Ivan Smagghe, Laurent Garnier, Ellen Allien, Mark Knight, Cristian Varela, Simon & Shaker, Technasia, Francesco Farfa, Loco Dice.. more infos & sounds: www.djmillydemori.com/djmillydemori.com www.myspace.com/millydemori www.soundselectiverecords.com www.myspace.com/millybar Tracklist: 01. One of the latest Fabric compilations, (the fabric 38, mixed by M.A.N.D.Y) includes his track: Noches de Superaciona as intro. The last three years have been very intense, giving him a new start in his career, with successful releases which were remixed by artists such as Marek Hemmann, Tony Rohr, Bloody Mary, Sarah Goldfarb, Federico Molinari, Seuil and Someone Else. In 2007 he had a huge tour which began in Australia, passed by Egypt, and went through 13 countries.
