Cortona, the alias of UK/Italy-based producer Enzo, channels decades of eclectic listening into atmospheric, groove-heavy club tracks. A formative night seeing Primal Scream with Andrew Weatherall lit the fuse for his dive into electronic music, eventually leading him to become a founding proponent of Plastic Fantastic—one of the scene's most influential progressive house labels. That legacy pulses through Cortona's work, with his recent releases finding homes on imprints ranging from Bedrock to Music To Die For. On this Balance Selections, Cortona balances analog nostalgia with modern fluidity. Featuring tracks from Mike Rish, Jamie Stevens, and Hermanez, this nearly three-hour mix leans into nocturnal energy to deliver a vintage progressive punch, weaving deep builds and emotive peaks into a seamless late-night journey. @cortona-195601059
Richard Fearless is one of the UKs most enigmatic DJs and Producers and his Death in Vegas project is back with a brand new album 'Death Mask' (their 7th) on Drone Records this June. As a DJ Richard played a pivotal role in some of the countries most forward looking club nights from the infamous Job Club in the early 90s alongside the likes of Claude Young, Dave Angel and Andrew Weatherall to a stint at the controls of The Heavenly Social with the Chemical Brothers and latterly working alongside Daniel Avery at The Pickle Factory's Goo nights. His Dj style is eclectic and visceral with casual disregard for genre specifics Richard developed a gritty style which served him well in terms of setting the tone of his fantastic Death in Vegas project. From the break out success of the seminal track 'Dirge' to the uncompromising sound of the new album 'Death Mask' Richards music is always innovative and excitingly experimental. We are delighted to welcome Richard Fearless of Death in Vegas to the podcast. Before that though, Eamon turns to the digital dark side at last.... Hosted on Acast. Sean Johnston's name may not necessarily be one that trips off the tongue so readily, but as one half of A Love From Outer space, he's most definitely in the frame. Sadly we lost his partner Andrew Weatherall almost exactly five years ago, but we talk to Sean about his early life in the farmlands of Yorkshire, early forays to the fleshpots of Driffield and Hull, before seeking fame, fortune and Balearic rarities in London. He also has a long overdue compilation out now, which you can buy here.
"I always like starting with something out of context..." He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche! His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. Between touring with Julie Byrne, collaborating with Raf Rundell - more on that to come soon pop pickers - and working on a new solo record featuring multiple vocalists, Tom's not a 'sit still' kind of guy. Just how we like it. Get it on, let's go... read more below. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/tom-sharkett-the-altered-currents-mix/ @tomsharkett @whlung

We revive our Global Selection series with a standout contribution from one of France's most authoritative selectors of his generation, Ivan Smagghe. Ahead of his return to Dublin for Big Dish Go this weekend at Centre Point, Smagghe delivers a masterful hour of storytelling through sound. From shimmering downtempo rarities to deep, driving house cuts and smoky, electro-kissed grooves, his mix unfolds like the hazy soundtrack to a foggy morning in the hills of an undisclosed rave, transporting you there, or wherever your wandering mind takes you. Few DJs can transform obscurity into dancefloor gold like Ivan Smagghe. With a musical ethos reminiscent of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Smagghe acts as a raw conduit, channelling his notoriously esoteric record collection into the pulsing bodies beneath the strobe. His latest mix is yet another example of his singular talent—a deep dive into the avant-garde fringes of electronic music, held together by an intuitive understanding of groove and space. Smagghe has long been at the intersection of Parisian hype and unwavering musical integrity. From his pioneering work with Black Strobe to his boundary-pushing productions as one half of It's A Fine Line, he has received praise from some of the most respected names in electronic music, including James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo, and, of course, Weatherall himself. What is their shared mission? To demonstrate that electronic music is more than just a hedonistic soundtrack; it is a constantly evolving art form. “I have very fond, if a bit blurred, memories of the Big Dish Go parties in the basement of Kennedy's… Loud and wild they were but we live in the now and we must let that spirit live on. It's just about freedom, in that mix (who cares what style it is) and in that ephemeral companionship with David Holmes. Dave Hackett of Keeping Track interviewed Paul McDermott back in April 2023. Paul began his media career here on Cork Campus Radio. Paul McDermott has been described as a cultural historian documenting Cork's musical heritage. If you're a regular listener to Cork Campus Radio, you will have heard his documentaries on Microdisney, Stump, Andrew Weatherall, and Finbar Donnelly from Five Go Down To The Sea & Nun Attax. More recent offerings such as his documentary on the Sultans of Ping, which was released as the band celebrated 30 years of Casual Sex In The Cineplex, was aired on RTE's 2XM and his feature on the music of Sliabh Luachra, which aired on RTE's Lyric FM, was described by the Irish Times as 'an evocative reminder of the magical role music can play in our lives'. When not documenting Cork's musical heritage, he teaches radio production, journalism studies and media analysis in Rathmines College, he broadcasts Songs To Learn & Sing on Dublin City FM, and he also produces the NO.1 podcast, To Here Knows When - Great Irish Albums Revisited.

*Monologues: Episode 81 - Ben Gomori* Follow me on Instagram Next date: Dec 31 - Universal Melodies @ Peckham Arches, London After nearly 12 years of inviting other artists to mix episodes of Monologues — my mix series where producers mix an hour of their own productions — I've finally decided to do one myself. Celebrating the release of my debut album 'Collapsing Time', this mix looks back on some of my favourite productions from my catalogue, focusing on the music that complements the sound of the album best. *How would you describe your sound?* A mess! Scattershot diversity, focused around groove and melody in the house arena. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Basement Jaxx, X-Press 2, Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk, Eric Prydz, Todd Terje, the Balearic ethos, early Andrew Weatherall and Paul Oakenfold, classic progressive house, my musical friends, travelling, psychology and the club scene. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It's the music I've produced over my 16 years in the game that fits best with the sound of my album 'Collapsing Time' — e.g. melancholy '80s/'90s-leaning housey stuff with a lot of pianos. Tracklist: A Single Hand Gesture All Those Years Ago [Monologues Records] ...And Then What? [Monologues Records] Get Out Of Your Head [Peppermint Jam] Inside Melody (feat. Andy Bell, celebrated for his work with iconic guitar bands Ride and Oasis, takes us on an unexpected journey into the world of electronic music. We chat about his latest project, Glok, and the new album "Alliance," crafted alongside Timothy Clerkin. Ride's early '90s shoegaze influence is unmistakable in his electronic creations, making for a fascinating blend of past and present musical elements. This episode touches on Andy's humility and creative spirit, offering a fresh perspective on his evolving musical path. Our exploration of minimalism uncovers its surprising role as a common thread across diverse musical genres. Navigating personal music preferences often led to the term "psychedelia," yet it is minimalism that for him truly ties together interests ranging from post-punk to ambient sounds. Conversations about Ride's reunion reveal insights into how cultures and eras influence each other, emphasizing a continued evolution of sound. The authenticity of past musical revivals is questioned while finding genuine connections in minimalism and transcendence.A transformative recording session in 2012 marks the beginning of Andy's electronic music journey, as he shares experiences with software and effects. Creating music during lockdown led to a serendipitous collaboration with Timothy Clerkin, highlighting the unpredictability of remote music production. We reflect on the influence of Andrew Weatherall and the tracks born from this unique partnership, with "Empyrean" standing out as a testament to Glok's sound.“Alliance” by Glok and Timothy Clerkin is out now on Bytes and available here.Follow Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's BBC World Service radio documentary “The man who smuggled punk rock across the Berlin Wall” is available now on BBC Sounds. Réécoutez True House Takeover by Lenny Fontana avec Andrew Weathrall du samedi 14 septembre 2024
We've not interviewed too many DJs so far on No Tags, so when we do, it's a safe assumption that a) we've watched them play a few times, and b) they're pretty tasty at it.OK Williams falls into both categories. We've seen her DJ multiple times and have never failed to leave the dancefloor refreshed. But she's also one of our favourite dance music personalities, as evidenced on her regular NTS show (and, OK, her Twitter account) where she exhibits the sort of energising but healthily realistic attitude that, frankly, more DJs could do with cultivating. Who knew there could be a link between having an engaging personality and making people dance? We sat down with OK Williams for a solid 80 minutes to talk, well, a lot. Is this one of No Tags' more forensic and focused interviews? No. Is a it a lot of fun? Undoubtably. But OK Williams offers as much insight as entertainment. We talked through her formative raving years, the musical awakening she found in queer clubs, her secret background in journalism (awkward!), her relationship with Andrew Weatherall, and some big picture questions on DJs as public figures and their responsibilities. If you like what we're doing at No Tags, please like, rate, review or subscribe to us on your podcast app of choice – in their own abstract ways, these things help. You can also support the show in a more literal way via our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and really helps us keep bringing you these podcasts and transcripts. For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4 Dicky Trisco is a DJ and music producer who lives and breathes what he does. His passion for music and desire for good times is well known. He has spent years chasing that sound and that feeling around the globe as an international DJ. For him DJing is all about people. He is addicted to the way music connects people and makes for better days. Dicky really broke through as a DJ and producer in the Nu Disco/Disco Revival years from around 2004. In particular, his run of DJ edit, original and remix releases alongside Balearic House hero Pete Herbert on Disco Deviance and Maxi Discs led to him becoming an increasingly in demand DJ with a busy international touring schedule. He is also rumoured to be the force behind the rather legendary Secret Squirrel vinyl only imprint. But who knows??? It's a secret. Since those early days, Dicky has toured constantly around Asia, Australia, Central/South America, USA, Europe and the UK sharing the music and the sound he loves. He has also become a regular at a long list of high profile festivals including the legendary Glastonbury, Electric Elephant, Mareh, Love International, Festival No 6 and many more. Dicky is also a mainstay of the local scene in his hometown of Dundee, Scotland where he was a resident of the infamous ‘Small Town Club' aka Reading Rooms for over a decade. At nights like Autodisco, Disco Deviance, A Night With and Non Stop, he learned his trade playing alongside many of his heroes and legendary DJs from around the world such as Andrew Weatherall, Optimo, Rahaan, Jazzie B, Horse Meat Disco, Farley Jackmaster and many more. Dicky also ran and curated the well-respected House music label Home Taping Is Killing Music for many years putting out a run of amazing releases. Home Taping broke a number of great House artists who have gone on to become household names in the scene including The Blessed Madonna, The Revenge, Nicholas, Borrowed Identity, Eddie C & Medlar amongst others. Dicky continues to discover, produce and remix music for a number of quality imprints including Razor-N-Tape, File Under Disco, Home Taping, Barefoot Beats, Nervous Records and many more. He has also remixed major artists such as Bryan Ferry, Belle & Sebastian, L'Impératrice, Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice), Danielle Baldelli, Faze Action, The Orielles, Golden Dawn Arkestra and Tensnake down in his basement studio. Most recently Dicky has been creating original music alongside NYC music machine JKriv under the name Sentimental Animals for the Razor-N-Tape imprint. Their Love Vibration EP was very well received by disc jockeys around the world and has been played by the likes of Craig Charles who made it one of his Tracks of 2021 on his BBC Radio 6 Funk & Soul show. Dicky became a resident DJ at Pikes in Ibiza in the summer of 2023 playing in every area - poolside, terrace, Freddies, bathtub - in this legendary club. He also kick started a monthly radio show out of Ibiza called International Sounds on OpenLab Radio where he showcases the music he discovers, makes and plays while travelling around the globe. As a disc jockey, DT packs a little bit of everything into his sets of International Sounds and is committed to the idea that music and club nights should be all about escapism, joy and togetherness. As Dicky says love and dancing is what we need. Amen to that. D:U:LIVE is coming in June! My first live set since 2013.... London / Bristol / Manchester - all tickets: scubaoficial.io/liveRadio is not something we've covered massively on the podcast to date but this week's guest is often (and somewhat lazily) referred to as the Irish John Peel, so this is a step towards rectifying that.Cian Ó Cíobháin has been curating his 5-nights-a-week show An Taobh Tuathail on the Irish state broadcaster RTE RnaG for 25 years. That longevity is an achievement in itself, but doing a great music show for that long is a very rare thing indeed.Originally from Gaeltacht in Co Kerry, he's been based in Galway since 1993, and has been a big part of the music scene ever since as a DJ and club promoter, bringing acts like Erol Alkan, Andrew Weatherall, and Justice to the city.Cian is a real legend of underground music in Ireland and it's great to have him on the show!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! "The road is incredible but has a lot of pitfalls." The fabric resident discusses striking the balance between DJing and production, the challenges of a life on tour and choosing to stick out. Daniel Avery wasn't expecting to make it big. Born in the seaside town of Bournemouth, his early musical diet consisted of shoegaze, post-punk, electroclash and indie rock; he was a die hard fan in attendance at every local live show. But when he moved to London, he was introduced to dance music and became immersed in nightlife, meeting artists like Erol Alkan and Andrew Weatherall who were using the sounds of guitar bands with techno and electronic music for the dance floor. Soon Daniel was working out of a studio next to Weatherall's—who became his longtime mentor—and started warming up the dance floor at fabric on a regular basis. His debut album, Drone Logic, was released to critical acclaim in 2013, and has been followed by six more full-lengths and a number of EPs and singles since. In this episode of the RA Exchange, Avery reflects on the shock of being catapulted into the limelight after Drone Logic's unexpected success, and the ongoing struggle he's contended with as he's taken on a full-time touring schedule as a DJ. He also touches on his eclectic range of influences and how he's integrated them in his forthcoming album and newly revitalised fabric party series, Divided Love, which launches on March 2. Listen to the episode in full.

This mixtape celebrates the creatives who are true musical heroes to me- David Holmes, Andrew Weatherall, Tricky, Shaun Ryder and Primal Scream. Artists who were making some of the most inspired records of my late teens and early twenties - and 30 years later are still producing music (some posthumously) that gets me out of bed and into life. Plus their influence and more- get out the headphones a drift away in a dub-for-your-head bliss. Rest In Power Lord Sabre, Scratch, Martin Duffy, Throb, Andy Rourke, Imelda and Scott Hardkiss. Today marks what would have been the Guv'nor's 60th birthday. As a little nod to the late great Andrew Weatherall we've re-sharing an old mix of his alongside Sean Johnston, recorded in the lead up to Electric Elephant 11 years ago, which was only previously available on Mixcloud. This came just a year into the duo's journey as ALFOS and their now infamous project which Andrew described as “an oasis of slowness in a world of increasing velocity”. A solid slice of oompty boompty music to see you into the weekend. Stick it on and raise a glass to the chairman!

We (Josh & Has) begin this episode by learning more about Josh's steam room business meetings and how he introduces contraband into the game. Has then asks Josh a series of questions in a segment he called 'Inside the Mind of Josh Connolly' where he discovered that Josh once gazed at Tom Hardy at Coral Reef swimming pool in Bracknell. There are plenty of other gems in this conversation. Onto the real topics of the day, Has introduces a saying "Fail we may, Sail we must" made famous by the late DJ & music producer, Andrew Weatherall, who had it tattooed on his arms after a conversation with a young Irish fisherman. We talk about the need to sometimes have to push through fear, anxiety and worry because for many, there often is no choice. We then talk about the Lionesses winning Euros and despite this fact, only receive £55,000 (compared to the men's team who received £300,000 for reaching the final) - we talk about the distance in pay parity still in existence. We say this all the time, but it's really a banger of an episode! You have to listen!

In this week's episode Jeremy and Tim move through the late 20th century to trace dub's echoing influence on Disco, Post-Punk, early House and the music of the British Rave scene. Dub's aesthetics of space, minimalism, and bass-centric production are revealed on the New York dancefloor through the early remix experiments of Walter Gibbons and the studio work of Francois K, as well as in the punk clubs of London and the after-party living rooms of late '80s ravers. Tim and Jeremy consider how the Clash came to lean heavily on their fascination with Dub and Rastafarianism; how Reggae as a musical vocabulary was repeatedly drawn on for distinctly Feminist musical projects with explicitly experimental aims; and spend some time discussing one of UK music's most singular figures, Andrew Weatherall. Tim Lawrence and Jeremy Gilbert are authors, academics, DJs and audiophile dance party organisers. They've been friends and collaborators since 1997, teaching together and running parties since 2003. With clubs closed and half their jobs lost to university cuts, they're inevitably launching a podcast. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down!
